It's easy to overlook the connection between what we eat and how we feel, but in a country where more than 1 in 5 adults are battling mental illness, suicide is on the rise, especially in children, and drug overdoses are at an all-time high, we need to stop and ask why? Why are we witnessing such unprecedented rates of mental illness? The answer lies not only in our modern-day, high-paced, stressful environment but at the end of our forks.
In this episode of my Health Bites series, I discuss why our brains are so broken, the root causes driving neuroinflammation, and how this drives disconnection between our prefrontal cortex (the adult in the room) and amygdala (our reactive, child-like brain), causing our anxiety and emotions to take over. We’ll also discuss the research clearly showing how our toxic SAD is a key driver of our mental health crisis and how you can eat (and supplement) your way out of many mental health issues.

Why are we dealing with unprecedented rates of mental illness? (4:46)
Top inflammatory foods and factors that are setting our brains on fire (6:34)
    What is metabolic health? (9:34)
The impact of metabolic dysfunction on our brains, mood, and overall health (14:04)

I read Mark Hyman's book Ultrametabolism many years ago, changed my diet to avoid ultraprocessed foods and focus on whole foods instead. Its been so long since then and, judging by how I'm aging compared to my peers, he was truly worth listening to then and clearly still is.

He resorted to street drugs sadly and it was laced with fentanyl! I try to raise awareness and hold fundraisers. I don't wish this pain on any parent. Thank you for being a caring and informative Doctor Dr. Mark! Im fighting for my health now.

FINALLY someone calling out what should be shared on the national news- everywhere- all the gun violence is over the top. Always excused with “mental illness”- people have to take responsibility for their health and not choose to be victims and then victimizers. Society pays the price- higher health insurance and lower productivity, violence etc. THANK YOU for making this video Dr. Hyman! It’s such an important message… I’m sharing it.

I am better now because I regularly consume Omega 3, anti oxidant, vit C, and Vit E regularly. Lemon water. Sometimes I take propolis. My diet is better than my childhood diet (Indonesian junk food). But I still consume sugar daily. Smoke cigarettes. Start to gain weight. And develop belly fat. I could do better than this. Diet. I should be conscious about my diet. Magnesium do wonders for me, Mr. Hyman. Thank u very much. ❤

We have to accept the tides of everyday life. Highs, lows, and all the in-between.
It's not about getting too a happy place, it's about creating that happy place within. Some of the poorest people are the richest in soul because they have not been fooled into the idea that a Stanley Cup or Rolex will bring happiness. Health. Being able to eat. To live without chronic pain or illness. Hard times are part of every day. I wasn't even 30 when both my parents died. I lost my best friend to suicide at 16 (she was 16, I was 15) and my mom was first diagnosed with cancer two months later. Life was hard at that time. But mom and I enjoyed the hell out of living... We laughed. We lived in the moment even when the moment was post-op and things weren't guaranteed to work out.
We need to teach our children REAL value. Every morning on our walk to school, I try to show my kids something tiny to get genuinely excited about. We leave early and watch the Golden Sun make the frost sparkle... When it's snowy, it's like piles of diamond shavings.
Children need to be able to find something to hold onto when life gets nasty. To be happy in the smallest joy--snow flakes in the morning Sun. That wonder about life.

On ADHD, I used to work for an agency (in Sweden) that function as an intermediary to several government authorities, once a woman came for she wanted to make a complaint/petition to the authority who pays out support for families with kids with serious neuropsychiatric issues. Her teenage son's school had started to give out coupons so they could go and buy the lunch from wherever they wanted instead of serving lunch but he did not choose the baked potatoe and checken stew but bought blueberrymuffins with soda or a heavily sugary coffee and he had got so much worse despite special adaptations in class he got. And she was devastated about it and wanted every agency who could have some influence of any kind to know the harm done.

Remember Potassium:Sodium ratio is also one of the most important metrics to consider a diet processed or not.
I've been eating 1kg of veggis plus 1/2 fruits every day for years. No issues at all.
Two years ago I quit fruit of any kind but kept eating 1kg of veggies every day and started developing numbness in hands, dry skin on my left elbow, dandruff, angriness...
Half a year ago I also removed 1/2 kg of veggies every day and fruit. Everything worsened.
It was 2 weeks ago when I started having potassium bicarbonate every day (1 tsp mixed in water) that all these symptoms started to improve.
I'm still having 4-5 gr of sodium every day , but balancing it with many veggies and potassium. If I do not reach 4-5 gr of sodium, I rest because I am not energetic to move.
I take sodium bicarbonate almost every day instead of so much salt and it helps with physical activity.

Mark: Some people are visual learners and get a message when you show them how the body works and what an inflammation brain looks like, the vessels that are impacted and what those look like, how the blood flow and oxygen plays a role in this as well. I think your information would be better if packaged differently. For example, make a video showing the food that is bad, and why it is bad…..including breaking it down to the ingredients and then teach people how to cook a similar meal using fresh ingredients that provides the nutrients their body needs. Then you are teaching them how to fish so to speak instead of just throwing facts at them. I understand your message and I eat much better today than I ever have, but even I get tired of my meals and want a new meal. Show me how to make a new dinner salad that is going to make me feel satisfied all night.

You mention burgers as part of these unhealthy ultra processed foods, I’m currently doing carnivore, I’ve lost 160 pounds and changed practically my entire life. I’ve gotten off all diabetes meds and no longer have blood sugar issues and have reversed fatty liver. I took my a1c from 11.2 to 5.4.
I eat a ton of ground beef, mostly for its price vs steak. I might have 2-3 steaks a week but I’m mostly eating ground beef, eggs, chicken thighs, goat cheese, salt and water.
When it comes to ground beef I’m probably eating 4-6 pounds of it a week. Now obviously my health has changed for the better, but in the long run am I doing damage by consuming ground meat?

Annemarie, it's not in your head. You Are in pain, it's not your fault your dr. doesn't know why. My theory is: almost all of our diseases and illnesses are an allergic reaction to our lives. Find a functional medicine doctor who can tell you what you are deficient in and allergic to.

The first thing I think of when I hear all over body pain is fibromyalgia. Some generic suggestions: stop ultraprocessed food especially gluten and dairy. Suggest a functional medicine doctor. Full endocrine workup including your thyroid .Also CC heck for nutritional deficiencies esp zinc and magnesium. Check for food sensitivities. Good luck

Mental and physical health are not unrelated. Who could be severely overweight and tired b/c of blood sugar spikes throughout the day and not be depressed? The world is a cesspool and you can be depressed with a good diet also, but poor health is very conducive to mental health issues, beyond any doubt. Not trying to be argumentative, but just sayin.

@@johns7530Indeed, Dr Chris Palmer have in interviews stated that there are numerous anecdotal cases where diet changes have improved the mental illness of his patients as well as others. And it seem as the gut bacteria also influence the neurotransmitters that is in the digestive system. Experiment in mice have shown they go from states of asocial (they don't function with other mice and may be aggressive) to basically severely autistic not having the natural cautiousness mice normally have the less diverse bacterieflora they had. But they improved if they started to increase it again. And aside of having been medicated with antibiotics, having a diet high in highly processed food have less diversity, and they can see it in comparision with countries whete they don't have that amount of convenience foods with a shelf life that is like half of an eternity.
