    I get a lot of people asking me a ton of questions on a regular basis and rather than let them get lost somewhere in cyberspace, Cindy and I decided to start answering them on our UA-cam channel and in an all new series we're calling, OP ED. Essentially, we'll be creating videos where you'll get to hear exactly what I think and get my 2¢ on all sorts of topics regarding Jeeps and all based on the questions I've been getting. In this very first episode of OP ED, I'll be taking on the question of, "do I need to re-gear my JL Wrangler with 37" tires?" As an added BONUS, you'll even get to see something special, a kind of easter egg and totally unrelated to gears or tires, if you stick around to the very end. We hope you enjoy.

    This was a huge decision when I upgraded the axles in the JK sport. And at the time, I wish there was a video or at least info from a source I trusted that also had real world testing and evaluation. Stoked to see this now and for the JL. Mel looked like a kid who woke up on Christmas before everyone else. Great stuff!

    In 4th gear at 70, you were at roughly 5500rpm, so it does make sense that it won't downshift to 4th when you are at 70. There is so little rpm range it would have to immediately shift into 5th. Was cool to see mono lake, love that area!

    Eddie,
    I went with the 4:88s 5 to 6 months ago. When I did the lift and 37s. I researched it and found that 4:56s were the closest to stock, being slightly taller than stock. Then I drove friends with 4:10 with 37s. Decided with the heavier loads that the 4:88s would be slightly lower and be my choice to move the extra weight and load. Happy with choice. However, I am contemplating D60s with 5:38s and 40s due to clearance issues crawling still one of my complaints. Happy Trails and stay safe. Looking forward to Gladiator stuff.

      5.38 are what we run in our JK with 40's but I personally am not so sure it'd be what I'd want on a JL with a 8-speed auto. At least, based on what I've seen.

    We running 40 tires with dana 60 axels floating axels front and rear lockers. We had the 513 gears but was having troubles with it shifting up and down even on very low grades.we went to 538 gears now runs in 8 gear much better. 5:13s are beasts and I’ve never driven with them but having a manual helps with any gearing. For my family vehicle I have to have an auto for my wife and cz we don’t go off-roading in the suv we stick to stock gearing with 32s. As for my truck I went from 2.73s to 4:56s and the difference is insane. I only have a v6 but will destroy v8s off the line.

      @ortiz73caify 5 років тому +1

      2015_ Rubicnn I agree but I love the idea of 442 tq. Which is what the diesel offers plus helps with towing in a truck version.

      @2015_Rubicnn 5 років тому +1

      @@ortiz73caify torque helps with pulling, but it actually lowers your tow rating due to the heavier engine over the Pentastar V6. The 5.7 Hemi is around 400HP and 410 torque. I'm not a big Eco Diesel fan, I'd just prefer a NA Hemi. 🇺🇸

    What do you think about a compromise of 4:88 - you mentioned it but do you think you’ll be able to pass in a lower gear with the 88 ratio? Obviously you’d just be projecting but what do you think? - Also, always good videos. This one slipped by me.

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  4 роки тому +3

      Hard to say for sure without having tested it but that would be my guess. I should note, you can still get 5.13's and 37's to passing power, you just need to let your speed drop low enough first. Off the line power, 5.13's are still the best though.

    When I first started wheeling Wayalife was one of the first channels I saw and I have followed it ever since. You do it so well. I loved the Whiskey Wonderlust video and had emailed you last year.
    I know this is an older thread, but I have plans to build my Jeep as I will be doing the Rubicon trail with Jeepers Jamboree at the end of July. I have decided on the shop, but I’m having some reservations about the gearing. I have a 2013 JKU that is stock except for 33” tires and 2" spacer. I plan to re-gear, air lockers, new driveshaft, new skid plates, 37” tires, 3.5” or 4.5” MetalCloak lift, 1 ton steering kit, trussed Dana 44 axle on the front with RCV joints. I was recommended 5.13 gears but I’m wondering if maybe I would be better suited for 4.88 in the long run. I have been wheeling for about 5 years. As I said doing the Rubicon Trail and and have about 60 some trails here in Arizona. I live in AZ and want to do trails in NV and CA, hopefully the Whiskey Wonderlust. I plan to do some overlanding as well. I am in the season of retirement at 73 in May, so I don't have the daily commute. I know that’s a lot of information. My Jeep is supposed to go in next week. Thanks Eddie.

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  2 роки тому

      Hi Larry, is it safe to assume your JKU is NOT a Rubicon? If so, please do yourself a favor and do NOT throw ANY money at your Dana 30 front axle. To do so would truly be a complete waste as there is none of what you just mentioned would prevent your ring and pinion and that is what you really should be concerned with. You can still drive home with a bent housing or steering linkage but you'll be up a creek and without a paddle with broken internal components. You'd be much better served to use that money and buy something like a Dana UD44 or if you're willing to spend a bit more and can wait, a Dynatrac ProRock 44. IF you're willing to do that, 5.13 is what you'd want with 37's on a JKU. IF not, I would NOT go any higher than 4.88 on a Dana 30 as the pinion will be way too small and be a weak point for sure, especially on something like the Rubicon. Also, RCV's are nice and I run a set now on my JLU but I don't think they're worth the premium price. From experience, a good set of chromoly shafts with full circle clips will get the job done just as well and save you about $400.

    • @larrybrockhaus8336
      @larrybrockhaus8336 2 роки тому

      @@wayalife Thank you so very much Eddie. I greatly appreciate your response. And it is a Sport and not a Rubicon. And I am getting rid of my Dana 30 and trussing a Dana 44 axle on the front with the RCV joints. And I forgot to mention I will have Chromoly axles. I am one guy that is a little bit more attuned to the MPG as well. With that information would you be thinking 4.88 gears as I am not a heavy duty rock crawling guy particularly when my wife joins me? It’s nice that she enjoys it. Thanks again.

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  2 роки тому

      @@larrybrockhaus8336 If you're talking about a factory Dana 44 and don't already have it, I would save the money and buy a better 44 like a UD44 or ProRock 44. They will not need trussing or sleeves or anything else. RCV's are chromoly shafts but totally unnecessary. Standard U-joints will be plenty so long as you get them with full circle clips. But hey, it's your money and I'm just trying to save you some. On a JKU, your problem is that the automatic isn't anything to write home about like the 8-speed is on a JLU. With a JKU, you will feel significant power loss with 37's and the only way to recover it is to run 5.13s.

    I just put 37s on my Wrangler Sport JL Unlimited 2.0 Turbo, from 35s with a 3.5 lift kit. I am running the Maxxies Razzar 37s on it now. I do feel it’s become a bit sluggish especially with early acceleration and pick up. I know you said 4.10 are great to upgrade and re gear to as the sweet spot. I don’t do a halla lot off roading, but I like the look of the 37s! Do you think I should be cautious of any other components breaking due to me putting on the 37s? Anything I can do to avoid any components breaking since my jeep is a non Rubicon? Please help! Thanks Eddie!!

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  3 роки тому +2

      Being that you have a Sport, I would not recommend running a ring and pinion ratio that's greater than 4.88. Beyond that, the pinion gets really small and you're just asking for a break. That would also be a pretty good match for 37's and so long as you're not pushing your Jeep too hard, you should be good with that setup.

I just got a 2 dr rubicon with the 3.6 auto and would like to run 37s but have concerns cause I’ve seen videos of people with JKs who say they highly recommend getting better ball joints, c gussets and other things before getting the 37s. Do you think those types of reinforcements are necessary for the JL to run 37s?

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  3 роки тому +6

      The JL comes with significantly improved axles and do not have the problems that the JK had. Being that you have a 2-door, what you will want to upgrade is your rear drive shaft as it is very short and the CV boots will be in a constant state of pinch with the amount of lift you'll need to clear 37's. This will cause them to fail prematurely. You will also need adjustable upper rear control arms to set your pinion angle.

      5.13 gears is on the high side for 37's. 4.88 bring you back close to stock and that will "help" your fuel economy but you're kidding yourself if you really think, even in a perfect world that regearing will "increase" MPG especially after installing big off road tires that have a LOT more rolling resistance. Just goes against the laws of physics.

      @@ghernandez6457 Regearing will "help" make your Jeep "feel" like it did when stock but it won't change the fact that your bigger tires are heavier and have more rolling resistance. There is no way you will see an "increase" in MPG but you will see less of a decrease than you would without it.

    Question: I bought the Patagonia 37 inch mud terrains because they are lighter than most 35 inch tires. Does this weight savings help with braking, reduce axle shaft breakage, and gearing? I have 4.10’s on a JL. Thanks. Or does it have more to do with diameter than weight?

    • @wayalife

      Nope. At least, not enough to matter or even notice. The diameter is the issue.

      @@Do4now Well, I'm truly humbled that you would say as much and can only share what I have personally experienced. At 3.5" of lift, your front drive shaft will need to be replaced eventually especially if you do a lot of flexing on the trail but it's not going to self-destruct the minute you install your lift. 3.73 gears will cause you to feel a loss of power but with an automatic transmission alone, I would say it's not great but it's not horrible. With a diesel, it's actually not too bad. I've personally tested a Gladiator diesel with 4.10s and 42" tires and it wasn't even too bad. Of course, I would never pretend to know as much as people on an internet forum so you can take that information for what it's worth.
