Its time to install a new gearset in my 2020 Jeep Gladiator. Around 3 years ago, we installed 5.13 gears which have been a great ratio choice. Unfortunately, on a recent road trip the pinion gear decided to chip and shear off teeth while driving on the highway. This time, i decided to go with Revolution Gear and Axle 5.13 gears after hearing lots of positive reviews.
Re-gear jobs are fairly complicated and meticulous, but with some good knowledge and mechanical skill its not too hard to DIY. In this video we show you how to setup the ring and pinion, check backlash, tooth contact pattern, use of setup bearings, rubicon locker removal, pinion preload and more.
Like i mentioned, there is a major difference between Spicer ADVANTEK gears (2 Cut), and other 5 cut aftermarket gears. The major difference in install is the Backlash Specification. 5 cut aftermarket gears spec backlash around 6-10 thousandths, whereas Advantek (Stock or lower ratio spicer gears) spec around 3-6 thou.
This difference in specs could very well be leading to lots of premature failures if not noticed.

This is the first time I've seen anyone go through the whole shim process. Thanks!
I’ve been watching your videos for a long time, and this type of video is why. I feel like if you can recapture this video dynamic you will crush it. Take it for what it’s worth, but great job on this video.
With a clam shell puller you need to have the race on the bearing when pulling them off. It keep the bearing from coming part. On the JL/JT I can pull the bearing off about 75% of the time and can reuse it if needed. There are times when I just have to cut it off.
Thanks for sharing the insight that the race should be on when pulling the bearing. I had a similar issue to Ben on mine and it may have worked if I had know to have the race on there during pull. Will do that next time. 👍
I learned more in 10 mins of this video than 5 years of mechanics class in high school .... 😀 Guessing you wont be in Pigeon Forge for a surprise appearance this year. King of the Hammers build looking nice. Good luck to yall and safe wheeling
I wish you were my neighbor. Informative and overwhelming at the same time.
The big benefit of doing it yourself is that you can be confident in it. And if you get lazy and just send it, it's on you.
Regeared my 23 jt yesterday in my garage. Went from 3.73 to 4.88 with 35” kenda klever. Used the revolution gear and master install kit with great success. Did a couple short around town trips today and everything seems great
How is it holding up? I am thinking about doing the same thing on my JT.
I know I’ve said it before but I love your channel and all the knowledge you bring!!
Just bought my ‘20 Gladiator sport and can’t wait to build it up!!
Keep up the amazing work!! 👍
New to ALLLLL OF THIS but wow this gave me a lot of insight on gearing and the inner parts of what my new Mojave has! Great video! Subscribed!
Mike……A man of MANY words. LOL
He may not say much….BUT….When he does…I shall ALWAYS listen.
I agree. 😂😁
Excellent tip on the aftermarket gear backlash vs the Dana Advantek gears. Great job Ben!
First, great shirt. I live near BG (LS swap the world). But, the markings on the pinion are depth measurements that you measure from the maincap surface, That would have got your pinion depth 99.9% on.. Nowthen, Run Amsoil to avoid future problems. Love your vids.
Haven't watched the video. Not really into gladiators, BUT just wanted to say I really appreciate all the hard work your videos are better than some "other" offroading jeep couples on utube.
I have 5.13 Revolution gears in my 2020 JT running 37’s have 26k miles and pleased so far.
I ran revolution gears in my YJ. They survived 6 years and multiple wheeling trips before the ring gear went. Definitely recommend them.
I’m a big fan of Yukon. I’ve been running their gears and shafts for a while now with zero issues. I’ve heard lots say revolution is quality stuff too. I’m sure you’ll have great success with them.
I just believe they have an issue with the JL/JT gears. I’ve heard hundreds of people with whining at 50-60, and about 45 others so far who have had a pinion blow up on the highway
My JL Yukon gears went out like yours after about 6K miles. They definitely have issues.
@@JKGearandGadgets I hope that you’re wrong. I have a 21’ Gladiator eco diesel with 4.56 Yukon. 9k miles so far with no issues. I also don’t have any whining at 55-60
@@JKGearandGadgets I've been hearing to many stories myself and not just on the internet, but from fellow members in our local jeep club. Many from JK regears too. Did they move or change manufacturing facilities? Yukons used to be the go to. I'll be going Revolution when i regear.
@@BobS515yeah Yukon Gear and Axle is trash since they were bought out and out sourced to China. I only got 11k miles before the pinion gear shed 4 gears.
My Yukon JKU pinion gear blew up driving down the road. Granted it has been wheeled hard over the last 3 years. But hasn't been wheeled in 6 months.
Just stumbled upon this piece of gold. Nice work, thanks for showing everyone how hard it actually is 👍🏻
I had a Yukon 5.13 pinion fail on my gladiator also. Lasted 10k miles and my ring gear also looked perfect.
I talked to a local shop and they don’t install Yukon anymore and would only install these Revolutions. My 5:13’s are supposed to be installed at the end of July. I really hope they’re quality because I only want to do it once.
I have them so far. I have no complaints about them actually went to Daytona Florida & Miami hit 90 mile N hour the good so far
Yeah I've heard way to many problems with Yukon gears. I've never had an issue with Dana/Spicer. So I'll will be installing Dana/Spicer again. It's not worth the risk
You can set the carrier in the shop press and squeeze it down to torque the ring gear bolts
Great idea!
Properly setting up differentials is like black magic lol. Every time I see a video of this process I always think of how many vehicles with half assed gear jobs must be out there
Curious why not just go with the OEM dana spicer gear set?
Great video. tip when using the bearing puller remember to put the bearing race on during the process.
Exactly the same thing that happened to me. Then they sent me the wrong axle gears. Even though all of the info specified my axle make on the order and two labels on packaging and tooth count except on label with the barcode had a different detail and as soon as I saw it it was obvious it was wrong
I’m on my 3rd or 4th set of Yukon 5:38 gears in my 21 rubicon. I’ve taken the rear pinion out several times. Ended up taking out my locker last time so now I’ve got 35 spline axles and an ARB air locker. So far it’s still going strong. Curious if this new gear set holds up well for you?
Thanks for the great video. Did you leave the Yukons up front or eventually replace them as well? I think I just had my Yukon 5.38 pinion shit the bed just driving in a parking lot. Could just be the shitty pinion bearing. Won't know until I get in there, then I'll decide what to do from there. Wish I had money to toss Dynatrac 60's in but then I'd need new wheels and tires as well, x's 5.
Left them up front, it doesn’t spin or get as much use so don’t really want to bother
@@JKGearandGadgets I'm with ya. Just pulled my diff cover and driveshaft. Drained fluid, no metallic flake. Was ecstatic. Then heard a thud hit the plastic catch pan. 2 huge teeth size of yours had sheered off. So now I'm thinking of just doing the rear as you did. Thanks again. All of your vids have educated me on my own Gladiator. Thank you sincerely.
You boys are sweating to much lol 😆 sorry. Seriously great video as always !!! I might have missed it in previous videos but. What phone / accessories mount are you using in the JT ?? Thanks in advance
Dang, awesome video and info. I'm not too far from Oklahoma... You wanna do a video on OX locker install and regear on a JT? Haha
why would you leave those styrofoam pellets stuck on the ring gear.
I know it isn't bits of steel but that looks like crap.
I don't know why I smile every time you say shaft. Well, I guess I do.
Awesome video. Happy 4th of July 🇺🇸 to your family.
40k miles with my revolution 4.88’s , no issues
Did you make a video on the front?
Read the instructions that came with your clamshell puller, you need the race on the bearing to use it, or you go through what you went through. Also, put some preload on that carrier, that came out way too easy.
How do you get your speedometer to show the correct speed after you regear?
how do you feel about ordering single shims and not stacking? is it overkill? thanks!
After you set the preload to 13.5-20 in lbs, aren't you supposed to take a tool to hold the pinion flange and do a final torque on the nut to some God awfully high ft/lbs setting?
On the Spicer data sheet in my case the front calls for 160 ft/lbs but they don't list a spec for the rear, only set the PTR pinion torque to rotate. Weird.
Answering my own question, do just as shown in the video, set the final pinion torque to the specified torque to rotate and all is well. It will basically fall in between the 160ft/lb + as you're crushing the crush sleeve. Thanks for the video. I did everything thus far to ready for install of the pinion and carrier and all the in/out which I'll do today.
Your old 5:13's were they installed when you were pulling all the stuck vehicles off that Texas beach?
Yep. But I highlyyyyyy doubt that was the issue. Since making this video, I’ve had countless people say the exact thing happened to their JL/JT axle on the HIGHWAY, with Yukon gears. Had a guy call me last night right after his blew up… And another post this morning on the FB group
@@JKGearandGadgets any know issues with 60's ring and pinion's or isolated to just 44's?
what is the torque on the bolts that hold the housing?
This seems like a very complex job 🔥
Did you not file the ring gear flat and chase the threads?
I'll bet you got really great mileage at 75 to 80 mile's per hour!
Not really. But the speed limit is 75 so you kinda have to keep up lol
I used Nitro gears, went 4.63 with 35 tires.
where are you located so I can bring mine
OKC
Are those steel toe crocks?
So i’m about to my jeep regeared, so is the post quality control kinda meh? how are dana spicer gears?
I would stick to revolution or spicer
Should’ve gotten the new gears DLC coated !
I herd 4:88s are the last gear set to have the teeth actually touching. How does 5:13s work?
Not sure where you heard that from. A lot depends on the axle and ring gear diameter. 5.38s are a thing, but that’s where they get tiny
@@JKGearandGadgetsI'm assuming the lowest gear set you recommend is 5:13. Is there any value in cryo treating a 5:38?
@@sc77 depends on the axle size. On a Dana 44 I’m not a huge fan of 5.38s but they will still work as long as your easy on the skinny pedal. That combo is tough though because normally you need those low of gears for bigger tires like 40s, but then you created a smaller pinion and even bigger heavier tires. Cryo treatment used to be very popular, but I’ve never had it done and seems as though it’s not too common anymore from what I hear, maybe the cost isn’t worth the gain.
Hope you are still remembering to drain out that catch can
Yep! Every time I open it’s about half full
Same here, every oil change like clockwork
I'm just trying to figure out how you did your reserve duty and kept your beard. 😂
I’ll just pay Drive Line Service LLC in Charleston WV to do that work for me. Oh wait I did that already 😂
You can change my gears anytime! 😂
27:16 I cannot find the video where he opened the diff after break in to discuss why he set it up on the tight side of backlash.
75-80 mph with 5.13:1 gears for 8hrs pretty much tells me what happened 😂
5.13s and 37s bring it only 200 rpm above factory at 75mph.
You can drive fast with low gears…
God you are clueless
Why didn’t my JKU with 5.38s and a 6.4 Hemi swap blow up when I drove it across the country 3 times?
Why didn’t this set of gears blow up so far after the same 11 hr drive to TX??? I’ve done it 4 times since this video.
Please help me with your knowledge
what gear oil are you using?
85w140
@@JKGearandGadgets Synthetic or mineral? The reason I ask is due to the heat transfer properties...
@@dougpendleton1266 non synthetic
@@JKGearandGadgets Sounds like a winner, good work!
Sally you might be the problem. Are you strong enough to torque them to 150? Better let mike do it.
I’ll torque them to 450 if needed big boy.
Take your bearing cage off turn your differential over heat the race and it will fall off
Too bad he forgot to stamp the side bearing caps, so they can go back on the same sides.. I'm starting to see why the first set went.. besides physics
They are physically different sizes lol. On these you can’t get it wrong… thanks for the comment and your valuable knowledge.
You tried to get me, but failed pretty bad haha
👍
Hi I would like to be entered in the giveaway. I have a 23’ JT Sport MT.
I hate my yukon gears, they howl at 60mph.
Are you ever going to replace that cracked windshield? Lol
Nope because it will just crack again with my luck lol
Is there a UA-cam Jeep channel without a broken windshield
😎👍
When the failure happens is not likely when it happened.
Why don't people have to break in their gears for 500 miles when they buy a new truck, jeep, corvette?
Oem gears are usually lapped or designed for no break in period required.
@@JKGearandGadgets EXACTLY! So, Buy Dana Spicer gears for all gear changes and get quality gears that you can put in and go, like factory originals. Google Yukon gears and read some jeep forums. NOT good.
Is your friend wearing a United Association hat??
Just tap tappppyy tap. Lol it’s not to good for it’s home. 😂😂😂
Where’s Cassie??? She’s one of the hottest UA-camrs!!!
Running low gears at 80mph for 8 hours? You’re asking for problems.
5.13s can handle that in a 220mm axle (dana44).
Keep wondering if the trailer haul with the old wrangler on it may have created the initial damage.
@@TalkeetnaT possibly. That was on my mind as well. But there’s no telling
I wouldn’t think so. Unless it’s a JT/JL thing ????…We run 5:13’s in our JKUR on 37’s ( now 40’s…THANKS BEN youtube.com/@JKGearandGadgets ) flat towed behind our motorhome. Regularly 12 hour haul between 75 & 80 on the freeway….About 20k miles now…..Gears still look brand new. I do however…..change the fluid pretty regularly. I know the stuff should last a very long time….BUT…
Get job
