- Let's face it, bigger is bigger, even if it's just by an inch. And, while a 37 has been a great, "go to" big tire size for a Jeep running factory axles, there's been a growing demand for something, just a little bigger. Fortunately, Nitto has been listening and as of today, they're now offering their ever popular Ridge Grapplers in a 38x12.50 and for a standard 17" wheel. That means, most any Jeep JL Wrangler or JT Gladiator owner can run them on their rig and without having to buy a new set of larger wheels.

Very nice work there Eddie. Passing on your knowledge via these vids is a BIG plus to the off road community. Obviously no one is born knowing and we all have to learn one way or another , I like to learn the easy way whenever possible. I realize it is to your advantage to have vids that get a lot of views but I also realize you don't have to take the time to teach on any vid as your wheeling trails vids do just fine so "Thanks" for these vids. Hi Eddie, I enjoyed this video. I had 33 inch Nitto Ridge grapplers on my current Gladiator Rubicon.
I mostly overland with it. today, I bought 4 new 37 inch Nitto Trail Grapplers partially down to your explanations on this video. also because I am seriously debating on buying the accuair lift kit for the JT. This channel suddenly became even more interesting, picked up my first Jeep, a new Gladiator Rubicon in a manual (saved $4000). The 33”s seem huge compared to my old Frontier. Can’t imagine 38”s. I’ll start with 35”s first in a few months. Ohio doesn’t have many off road trails. Gotta start looking for some adventures out there. Right now the wife and are just enjoying the open top experience. Amazing! Thanks for this channel!

The manual saved $4k? That's weird bc it's getting harder to find stick shifts these days from the dealer and when it is one they want to charge you MORE money!! I always thought that part was crazy charging more money for a manual vs auto 🤦♂️
@@user-gj6yb2qc7e I have never seen a dealer charge more money for a Manuel. If you go to jeeps website to order one, the Manuel is the standard option. where if you select auto the price is bumped up $2500. The auto is always costs more.

Gladiator owners, be aware that the largest tire that can fit on your spare wheel well is the 37. Just a helpful tidbit.
Yea and that is barely fit, from brand to brand.
I'm surprised that 37's would even fit at all I didn't even try my 37x20" in the spare area. I just left the 33" in there for now. I'm probably going to mount mine standing mounted to the bed rail in the truck bed or maybe even on the tail gate.

@@rockie307 if you're not integrating your spare tire into a 5-tire rotation, it oftentimes doesn't really matter if it's a little undersized. Sure, you'll get some driveline windup in 4WD, but with your other 3 tires still aired down and your "undersized" spare fully inflated, they'll have pretty much the same rolling radius. You won't want to have mismatched sizes on an axle with a limited-slip differential for a long drive home from the trail, but if you do happen to damage a tire on the trail an undersized spare will certainly get you home. Just like on a car with its little donut "space saver" spare; temporary use only.
@@rubicon4wheeler I always have a full size tire and wheel. Where I ride you can be down a trail 8 hours from a town with a tire store. I do a 5 tire rotation. For me getting out is more important then looking cool in town so I'm limited to 35.3 tall tire that barely fits under my truck

About 20k on my ridge grapplers and still plenty of tread left. 33s on the wife’s JKU. Like them so much I got some for my Tacoma. They did good last winter in Boise Idaho. We don’t get that much snow, but they still handled pretty well.

Looks very nice! Me, I'm keeping my 2020 Willys 4-door stock height and looking at the Nitto Ridge Grappler in the "pizza cutter" size of 255/80-17 on the factory wheels. Easy 1-inch increase to 33" over the factory 32" Firestone Destination MT's (255/75-17). I prefer 100 miles of forest road over 5 miles of rock crawling, so going from C rated Firestone's to E rated Nitto's will give me much more puncture resistance peace of mind while exploring forests and deserts here in Arizona. Enjoyed the video and will check in for more. Peace. Pete.

Nice tries, hope they work out as good as they look. The wheels are really nice too. I totally agree the "golden" cad-plated bolts look better! The only thing that got me wondering was that you missed saying anything about the yellow alignment mark on the side of the tire. (Most people don't even know it's there for a reason) If you have both a red dot and a yellow mark, use the red dot instead the yellow mark.
For those that don't know... When they manufacture tires they do an in-house balance on them. The yellow mark is the lightest point on the tire. The red dot is the highest point on the tire. This is to make balancing your wheel/tire assemblies easier. It is "best practice" to put the yellow mark (or red dot) in line with the valve stem, which is the heaviest point on the wheel. Particularly if you have the weight of a TPMS installed in the wheel. This way the lightest point on the tire matches up with the heaviest point on the wheel. Thus it helps in balancing the assembly as whole easier. Again, if you have a red dot, the red dot over rides the yellow mark. Yeah, with high quality tires and wheels the difference isn't that big, but the larger or cheaper you go, the worse it gets. In that respect, anything you can do to help will be worth it.
My bad. Ever since we started running Nittos, I haven't felt the need to worry myself about it. But you're right, on lesser tires, it is something that should be noted. I'll try to make sure to mention it in a future video. Thanks.

I'm running 35" Nitto Mud Grapplers as my regular tires on my big ol', 84 suburban. Lov'em. Surprisingly well/long/"quiet" tread wear on the street and bonzers off road.
This 38" RG could be "the tire" for me in the future but, remember sports fans...
Going to a 38" tire and schnazzy new wheels means a significant increase in "rotating mass" and the farther you get away from your axle, every inch of tire becomes exponentially more problematic to deal with (if you don't understand the term, don't buy the tires 'till you do).
This means you'll need a brake set-up that will stop the mass from rotating when you want them to. Just my 35's provided a challenge for my 'burb's brakes..
Also, 38" broaches the territory of "really hard on bearings." Like, new bearings every 10k miles, frequent.
Rotating mass, off-camber leveraging, all kinds of terms and concepts get forgotten along the wayside when our eyes get bedazzled by such enticing beauty as these tires and wheels (yup, I want some).
I'm not knocking them AT ALL and, as I said, they'll probably be my next choice but, do be aware of what it takes to make them "live happily ever after" on the ends of your axles or you might find yourself busted down in a rut or driving off a cliff because you can't make them stop turning.
I know that you "know it all, long time enthusiasts" out there know all this, I don't need the trolling comments to tell me I'm stating the obvious. I'm saying this for the folks looking at this video with "wide eyes" who've not yet ventured into the realm of such big tire/wheel combos and don't realize everything involved with making the transition. And, to them, I'd say that 38's are about as big as you want to run as a streetable tire. Anything bigger is just too problematic to be cruising down the road at 50-60mph, which is about as fast as you'll get those things to go without *a lot* of extra work on your vehicle (no 40's or up, it's just too much weight and leverage).
But, *this is just my opinion* as someone who's run 4x4s since the early 70s with my dad and has made a living as a certified tech, fixing a lot of the ensuing problems.
Use all the info you can find in making your choices.

Just because I got sidetracked by a rampaging pet while trying to get that banged out under the sway of the pull of a 3am, full moon and forgot to include ring gear/pinion torque, thrust, "angle of the dangle" problems, as well as the need to upgrade the front hubs from factory to a good set of Warns, change wheel bearings, possibly u-joints and definitely brake pads every 10k mi. is *not* a reason to challenge my competency, that's pretty rude... Obviously, there's a need to assert some sort of dominance and stroke your ego by putting mine under some sort of "check..." Sorry about you inferiority complex.
Instead, how about something simple, like "Hey there, I see no mention of ring gears, etc., might that not also be an issue?" or some such thing and see if I actually have a valid response or, I even simply acquiesce with sincere gratitude to your identifying a completely omitted thought in the process?
Why do people always want to try to make themselves look better by trying to find a way to make the other guy look bad, rather than just say something like "Hey, don't forget about this or, that as well. It might be important, don't you think??"
But, a little civility is a bit too much to hope for these days, so it would seem.

That combo looks way better on your rig.I'm stuck deciding between BFG K02 or the Nitto on my JK.
Keep in mind the K02s are 10 pounds lighter per tire...

Looks amazing. Even though those tires are bigger my guess is the tread pattern will create less rolling resistance at full pressure and your mpg will not take a hit.
Very good observation and yes, I would agree with you. Need to do some longer term testing to know for sure.

@@Talon1983 I typically like to run my tires at about 28-30 psi. This does require something like a Tazer to allow for a lower pressure but it will provide a flatter footprint and better tread wear.

Assuming you have a Dana 30 front axle, you can run 37's so long as you leave your front diff open and run a 4.88 or less gear.
How are the odds of risk for off road use on the front axle if used ?

Great color choices. I would have done the black wheels with the gold hardware myself too. The Jeep looks much better with those black wheels on it. IMO
