Metal Gear Rising was a HUGGGGEEE stepping stone for massive potential of future Metal Gear games with Raiden as the protagonist. If there's EVER a sequal, it has endless potential.

To be technical here, Raiden is a little bipolar and has a disorder in his mind that causes a tick which makes him agressive and dangerous. he is also schizophrenic (which is why he hears "voices" in his head) but all of these disorders were caused by none other than Solidus.

In a way, Raiden's story is about accepting whatever fucked up past you may have and embrace everything that you once were. Jack has spent all his life trying to forget who he was, but eventually he realised he could never fully suppress it and move on, so he accepted it. He knows he's a psychopath, and he's okay with that. Because at the end of the day, he's still a Hero.

To anyone that thinks MGR contradict's Raiden's character development, know this:
The backstory for MGR is that Raiden, even after getting artificial skin to conceal his cyborg enhancements, could not find work to support Rose and his son that didn't involve war. That's why he found a job working for Maverick, believing that specific PMC was about peacekeeping and security consultation, not being a hired gun for war like in MGS4. Which is why he's always going on about justice, which is why he believed what he was working towards was right.
As the game progressed, you see Raiden steer himself towards a path lead by his own sense of justice.

Snake told Raiden, "Fight for what you believe in" Raiden mentions that quote that Solid Snake told him when he's asked what he is fighting for, he fights against corrupt PMC's that do children trafficking for war, he's also a very well trained killer, but he kills for the name of justice.

Raiden starts out so goofy and awkward and then becomes one of the most intense and interesting characters in the whole franchise, but what makes it work for him is that the progression feels so natural and unforced. Excellent character development and writing makes that possible, and an excellent VA makes it happen.

Mecha Moa same here. At first I new nothing about metal gear solid, but played rising and wanted to learn more about the story.
This was awesome. Shame about the song at the end, but still. Should do one for Ocelot. People don't realise it, but if the Metal Gear Solid series is about any one person's story, it's him. He's in every game. He's the reason for the success of the mission in MGS3. Him being a double agent results in the US getting hold of the Philosopher's Legacy, which he then gets hold of for Zero: without him, the Patriots would never have happened. He's also the reason that Big Boss joined the Patriots originally, by his request. Big Boss being in the Patriots, and then leaving, lead to Les Enfants Terribles. He's the one who recovers the Metal Gear blueprints after MGS1, when it's revealed he's a spy, which is the reason Metal Gears spring up all over the world. He orchestrates all of the events in MGS2 and MGS4, and is the entire reason that they were able to stop the Patriots. In every single game, he's actually been the most important character.

leerobbo92 He is by far one of the most active and important characters but I would point out that he only first appears in MGS1 so he hasn't exactly been in every single game but it was close. He wasn't there in Zanzibar land to even know that Grey Fox had died there, but there is always the possibility the two met while being apart of Diamond Dogs and had some sort of rivalry going on. Ocelot's story is far from being done in my opinion.
SolidSnake2948 Aye, I did mention that I was only talking about the MGS series though, not the MSX ones. I can't wait for the new one. What happens to Ocelot between MGSV and MGS1, and why Big Boss appears to be the bad guy from MGSV onwards are the two biggest questions left, and I think there'll be a few twists.
leerobbo92 In my opinion MGS3, Portable ops, Peace Walker and Ground zeros have crushed any barrier between "MSX" and "MGS". TPP will hopefully link them more directly.

Ocelot is also the son of the Joy and and the Sorrow. Born on the battlefield. He is a manifestation of the chaos of fighting and therefore deepest in the system of wars. And maybe that makes him the patriots greatest enemy because that would make him want peace the most.

From some different fandoms and their arguments to say that this game does not concern as Canon for what the story is ridiculously silly and nonsense.
those have not seen the codec conversations, what MGR explains it, and why Raiden goes for fight, and not to stay with rose, is like this; Raiden lived with Rose happily. The problem? clearly because of his cybernetic body, he could not change it. He had to go with suits to hide his body from people who looked at him as a phenomenon: he couldnt get a job. Because he did not have the money to take care of his family, and let Rose take the load, Raiden had no option but to work in some military center. In this case, as a security guard before entering Marverich.
After that, the plot begins with stopping those who killed the prime minister, and he realizes that behind them, they turning this people beings like Raiden into Jack. Taking that which concerns Raiden, he confronts them.
Technically, Raiden had a simple task, it was to stop the Desperados, but not to confront them. And after that, Sam, motivating him to proceed with fighting Desperado to World Marshal, which in the DLC he could not complete, it is as if he was trying to pass his legacy to Raiden to go against those corrupt, and thus know what " Reveangeance " is.
Which makes me think that Sam starred in the story, instead of Raiden.
So... I dont understand this people and his ideas against for a game that is not Snake; The poor man had a month to live, and that was said in MGS4, this game is when 3 years later passed, it continues to raiden.
The rest of the series is canon to MGR, and MGR is canon to itself. Anything beyond that doesn't matter to me.
He probably became a gun shop owner in the maintime.

As absurd as MGS4 was as regards Raiden, I couldn't help but feel that the moment in which Jack and Raiden Jr. stare at each other was masterfully done. They're looking one another with a kind of fascination: Jack seeing the child he never thought he'd have, and John seeing the hero he thought was only fiction.
Seriously, that, Ocelot and Big Boss' deaths were the only times I teared up a little.

I really do like the meta-narrative around Raiden as a self-insert character and the ambiguity behind everything leading up to and occurring at Big Shell. I think it’s all supposed to be vague as to whether what we’re told about Raiden is a child soldier is true or just another level of control by Solidus. The point of him in MGS2 is our window into that world
Your concept and execution are absolutely fucking perfect. What's that? Too much of a simple compliment? Okay.
THIS little presentation is art, not pretentious garbage calling itself intellectual for regurgitating complete disgusting lies about healthy sexuality or who people are as individuals and not what. This lovingly crafted project overflowing with soul is something that follows a unique and incredibly written character's story over the span of many years, themes and elements of the time reflected outside its own world in more impressive graphics and physics technology and cultural appeal and trends, their traumatic beginnings that led them to feel like a monster, the touch and impact by humble allies and associates, the ones they came to call "friend", and even fortunately enough "love", that dragged them kicking and screaming out of the mental and metaphorical abyss of their own making and slowly rise out as a visibly scarred and almost alien bringer of justice using all that forcibly tamed and channeled anger, hatred, pain and evil to poetically carve it just like a honed blade through much greater and more sinister and misled forces wielding it that cast a shadow over a brighter horizon. It's not for any sense of glory or pride that they fight against any overwhelming odds, it's solely their ideals and faith in the people around them they place higher that made literally both of them unfazed to suicidally and painfully blazingly crash from space if it saves the world and Jack is no different in his fearlessness towards death and will to cut his own future and justice in the face of entire global military corporations capable of taking him on and down resolute to ensure no child ever knows the long and painful, but gods thankfully optimistic journey of insatiable maniacal beast and cynical soldier to loving husband, father and hero redemption he's had to take.
Sorry if all that text, metaphor and emotion seems excessive, I just wanted to let you know just how fucking good that was and I'd say I did.

Damn thanks man for the enlightment. Raiden is by far my most favorite character, sadly i haven't played any other MG games so far, but thanks to my friends i know some basic stuff about it, but still Raidens story truly got me.
Crime that this wasn't in my algorithm till 8 years later. Justice that it finally came. The whiny MGS2 Raiden certainly had his own personal redemption arc, even if you skipped from MGS2 straight to MGR.

Am I the only one that even after having played MGS1 first, I perfered Raiden in the sequel and was glad to play as him most of the game?
I Never played MGS1 so i'm a bit biased but I loved Raiden when I first saw him granted his introduction was the first MGS I ever played and honestly I think he deserves a bit more screen time cuz Kojima could go more in depth with his story and really make something more wonderous of it than it already is.

Christian Verstappen MGS2 was the 1st I've played, and I did prefer Raiden over Snake, but that was as I progressed through his story, because on 1st sight, I was rly concerned of what happened to Snake, after the tanker incident.

In Metal Gear 2 Raiden aka Jack represents a very Japanese style character. His movements have finesse. Unlike, Snake who represents an American stylized character. Rough and tumble like rock em sock em robots.

After I saw all of this about Jack , MGR felt a bit more dark , it made me actually understand what Jack said to Moonsoon and it changed the mood of the scene from badass too badass and a bit dark.

Am I the only one who thinks it's kinda messed up that Rose took their kid - who apparently spikes his hair and admires badass, samurai/ninja action heroes - to meet his biological father while wearing the gayest little sailor outfit ever?... Honestly raiden is an interesting character and I really wish for another story about him
