Many people hate MGS4 for the long ass cutscenes, but no one can deny the quality of this product. This scene is the proof of it. Direction, choreography, music, voice actors, action, references to all previous games... It's magnificent
Mgs2 had longer cutscenes that made no sense in my opinion
Hating MGS4 after the insanely boredom-inducing uneventfulness of MGSV is simply unreasonable.
For one - I remember literally everything that happened (and why) in MGS4. MGSV can't brag about that.
The worst thing about MGS4 is that it doesn't have much content outside of the main campaign itself and the long-gone multiplayer. No VR missions, no boss rush, no secret theatre... Now that's pretty bad.
Must be the plebs who were new to MGS series.
Long cutscenes? Not long enough.
This fight i think is the highlight of it.
Lol some of the codec calls in the first game was long as hell.
I'll never forget that moment the Solid Snake health bar appeared opposite Liquids and both filled up. Such an amazing moment in gaming history.

Finally seeing "solid snake" instead of old snake pop up was so badass.
I always loved the fact that you literally beat Liquid out of Ocelot's mind, and by the third phase, it's no longer two brothers fighting, but Ocelot vicariously fighting the man he respected most in the world through that man's son. Powerful stuff, and it's told through LIFE BARS. That's storytelling only possible in videogames, and Kojima is a master.
I've played through this and rewatched this so many times, but never noticed the life bars changing like that lmao. That's amazing.

Ocelof acts as the first boss we never thought he could become a huge villain in the series
He is pretty good, after all.
First Boss in MGS1, First Boss in MGS3 (after the decision was made to continue the franchise with two more games) and last Boss of the franchise as a whole.
He was the antihero of the story, acting on his own free will ... even if that meant to become someone else entirely to get to his goal.
The Boss, BigBoss, Eva, Ocelot, SolidSnake, Otacon, MajorZero, Naomi, Raiden and Sunny are the key characters of this franchise ... and Ocelot may be the best developed of them all.

Ocelot regains control of himself throughout the battle. We can see this in the names of his health bar.

This rivalry comes from the ps1 era. Nothing but respect to these two gentlemen. If you shed a tear by the sound of the trumpet at the beginning of the fight, it's okay, that's respect.
Ocelot/Liquid/Liquid Ocelot wanted to win. he wanted snake to die, but nto as an old man too weak to make a final stand. He wanted Snake to die on his feet like a man.
And in that moment. That is what Snake wanted too. One final battle. No grand stakes. No great and terrible peril. No wars. No governmental meddling. Just hte purity of one final fight.
To leave everything for the world to see.
What I love about this game. There isn't some high tech metal gear. No giant mechanical behemoth to fight. Simply a fist fight with his final enemy.
The mechanical behemoth in this case is the Patriots themselves
I love the camera tricks done for this fight, with the MGS1 segment done with a fixed camera, the MGS2 segment done with a closer camera and more cutscenes, and the MGS3 segment having a much closer camera and QTE's

I'm 9 months late for the reply. Well, in the real world, of course. We are though talking about fictional super soldiers pretty much who ignore reality. I mean, Snake, who is a clone with a speed up aging process before this fight, was getting cooked in giant microwave and survived. He technically should be dead several times over in this game alone. We also have Raiden, who survived that ship, crushing him as he held it back, then coming back to help Snake inside armless against the last remnants of Liquid Ocelots special forces.
I could believe at this point that if Snake wanted to de-age himself out of sheer will he could if wanted. 😅 I mean, with Raiden, at the end of 4, he has all his limbs back and a more human looking body again. Otacon even mentions to Snake that though he still holds Foxdie and it could be a ticking time bomb for everyone, there is equal chance it goes inert or that Snake dies of age before worse case.
Mind this is the Final for Snakes story regardless, and he did things that obviously anyone in reality would be dead several times over.
A reminder: Snake is 42 years old (but is probably physically in his mid-70s), and Ocelot is 69-70 years old.
All things considered, these guys are doing pretty good for their age.

I just wish they added modes that made it possible to enjoy the gameplay. This was the best controls at that point and we spent more time watching than playing
Yeah, shadow moses touched my soul, specially because I played it while in the quarantine and had no idea it was in the game. All that nostalgia, and The Best Is Yet to Come, was one of the best moments i had while gaming.
As a newcomer who beat the game all of five minutes ago I didn't mind the cutscenes at all. They were masterfully crafted and emotional that I paid no attention. But I do still share the sentiment of all watch, but no game. Which sucks so badly because the gameplay was magnificent.

The final part when Old Snake says "It's you Liquid! You're the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots!" really pulls my heartstrings. The climactic and dramatic built up nearly made me cry and fard loudly. Truly a masterpiece by Dideo Kojimber.

The only time I cried during a videogame. Not even out of sadness, for anyone who played the whole series since PS1... This is so powerful and emotional. It was a lot of cutscenes in this game, but it was a damn masterpiece

Fun fact I found out by complete accident, you can switch Snake's style to straight punches if you attack while guarding, they come out slower but do more damage and have better range.
And yes, there's a button for blocking, I found that by accident too.

This scene and gameplay is REAL MASTERPIECE. Not just story about great soldier, but Snake and Ocelot are like family, brothers in arm, bestfriend, but they walk different path but actually same purpose. But they No Regret at all, they fight for what they thinks is right. Game now is not like this ERA anymore. MGS franchise are masterpiece. We just not play game. But is like we watched movie, and sometime truth about world we live in. I MISS This game...

I may not have played most if the Metal Gear series (just 2, 3 and Peace Walker) but I keep coming back to this fight on UA-cam. Just the idea that a war of espionage fought for nearly 5 decades ends with the last two soldiers (who are in their golden years now) beating each other senseless is pretty emotional.
Wow! This fight was one hell of a journey through all the MGS games...
In the end there were no more tricks, no more exos, no more weapons, Just two old dogs of war fighting it all out the ancient way: With the fists.
12:40 for me was my favorite they way they stood up together with their sheer will and the damn sound track so epic..
As a long time fan of the series, this felt like a special reward for the loyalty of playing through all the previous games. I miss this game and definitely need to go back through it again. Seeing the characters that have been developed over the course of many (real life!) years and spanning decades in the game universe, this felt like what everything had been leading towards for a VERY long time. The score set to the battle makes it feel suitably epic, the fighting styles changing to match each of the games was a brilliant nod to nostalgia, and the voice actors did an amazing job of bringing all of the characters' emotions to life in a way that only MGS really can. Masterfully done Hideo (shame things turned out the way they did btw). A+++++!
I understand the criticisms, but this was/is so fucken epic it still blows my tiny little mind, just like it did back in the day.
This game came out about 15 years ago and to this day no one has dared to be this bold in storytelling and action. That's why I find modern gaming so boring. Its either some sandbox garbage or a cash-in in the likes of Fortnite.

These two old men (ik snake is not that old, but you get the idea), are fighting while literally at the border of their bodies collapsing from being old and being ill. They are two spirits, not letting themselves die yet, never reaching peace but also never a resolution, tainted by the actions of people who controlled and used them, by a world that didn't even care about them and still it took everything from them
At the end it didn't even matter who won this fight, Fox Alive had already did it's trick by then, there was no real reason for keep fighting, specially since Ocelot just told Snake about he wanted this, they chose to spent what could have been their last moments in this world fighting for a rivalry forged by people who used them, Ocelot being controlled by Liquid and then being used to executed this whole plan, and Snake being born a clone of Big Boss, being used to spread FoxDie

Liquid was only in MGS1 and MGSV. You can see that ‘Liquid’ was actually just Ocelot when Big Boss talks about the hypnosis and nanomachines and such, it flashes back to MGS2. Meaning that even in MGS2, Ocelot was just faking it. Funny how the ‘main antagonist’ was actually only in 2 games, one of which he wasn’t even a main antagonist lmao.

Snake Eater will always be my favorite...but I enjoyed this game very much. MGSV was where it started to approach awful. I felt like I was doing (mostly) the same mission over and over....everything was so grindy and seemed so much less story driven as a result. But yes, this was the last great one, for me.

At least MGSV allowed you to play the game, MGS4 has so many gameplay mechanics that go to waste because of how small the areas are and the low amount of gameplay segments
Gamecube Solid Snake is still the most badass. He was able to do a backflip off a rocket than somehow pull out two stinger missile launchers from his skin tight suit and fire double stinger missiles still in mid air. 😎😎😎
