The Red-Eyes Archetype - Failed Cards and Mechanics in Yu-Gi-Oh
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 тра 2024
- Being a fan-favorite since its debut in the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG set, Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon, and being the ace monster of Joey Wheeler in the Yu-Gi-Oh animated series, Red-Eyes Black Dragon was rewarded with its own archetype. Even though certain cards involved Red-Eyes Black Dragon before this set's release, like Red-Eyes Black Chick, Inferno Fire Blast, Red-Eyes Wyvern, and Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, none of those cards were helpful to the 2400 Atk dark dragon. The only cards that consistently saw play were Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon and Red-Eyes Wyvern due to Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon's ability to special summon any Dragon from the hand or graveyard and Red-Eyes Wyvern's ability to banish itself to Special Summon Red-Eyes Darkness Metal if it was in the graveyard. However, the first wave of support it received was supposed to rectify Red-Eyes's problems….and didn't quite do that. So today, we'll look at the Red-Eyes Archetype and why it failed in the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG.

Red-eyes fusion should have just locked you out of summoning non Red-eyes monsters instead of preventing you from summoning all together.
This right here. Reading branded fusion makes me cry every time
This is too true. I feel this makes me wonder if there are more fans of blue eyes than red eyes at Konami
Personally I think it should be retrained to have exactly that restriction and ban Anaconda, then Dragoon can rightfully come off the banlist exclusive for Red-eyes to get out consistently rather than an engine splashable in almost every deck
@DominusZeikyu retrain is unnecessary. Just errata the card
@DominusZeikyu Dragoon is off the banlist. Just not in Master duel and OCG.
Blue-Eyes: Raw Power
Dark Magician: Tricks to dismantle problems and go for the finish
Red-Eyes: Keeps coming back, and uh... throws stuff at the wall to see what sticks.
I mean, you can't say they don't represent their duelists. I'm surprised there aren't a bunch of Red-Eyes gamble cards.
I was thinking about that too, it could be really fun to make a red eyes time dragon or something as a fusion of red eyes baby dragon and a spellcaster and give it a more consistent effect than time wizards effect
@@LoyalWackGamer Luckily for the archetype, Joe wasn't the sole user of it.
Snake eyes black dragon! lol
Blue-Eyes: beatstick turbo
DM: protect the castle
Red-Eyes: either ftk or pray
Red-Eyes Dragons. Dont care if they are in the yard or on the field and they just keep going in and out of the grave. Their gimmick is not staying dead.
It really feels like Konami themselves hate Red-Eyes, considering the stark power differences between Blue Eyes Alternative vs Red-Eyes Alternative
Blue eyes was established earlier on and red eyes was supposed to be legendary yet no one remembers it
Now tbf, Red-Eyes Alternative needs a "Red--Eyes" monster, not specifically Red-Eyes
To me Red-Eyes represents the underdogs who are trying to make it to the big league. Joey Wheelo was an underdog due to having weak cards and he had to work hard in order to make it to the top like Yugi and Kaiba. Red-Eyes is his most powerful card. To me, Konami doesn't like the card because of what it really represents...Potential
@@tatsuostatic8567 red eyes was prominently used by atticus from gx, who was just as good as zane. Try again
That's fair tbh no reason for red eyes alternative to suck so hard.
And i like red eyes.
Re-Eyes fits Red-Eyes very well for the amount of re-tries needed to make Red-Eyes actually good.
Facts, I mained red-eyes in master duel and it does get results but compared to dark magician and blue-eyes it's very underwhelming.
Which sucks because that’s my pet anime deck but my god, they can’t decide what they want it to be. Is it a burn ftk deck? Is it a rank 7 deck? And otk deck? Who fucking knows at this point
I agree
Like if they wanna make the deck good
They need to make a structure deck R and give it the traptix treatment of giving it *EVERYTHING IT NEEDS*
@@BeAManYouSissys It could theoretically be all of those thing if they gave it the right tools, but they seem reluctant to that
it makes you wonder just how easily joey would have gotten crushed if he were real since he played the very same way the game creators tried to fix the red eyes archtype, joey practically threw shit at the wall in hopes something would work out and gamble his way to victory. while joey had plot armor to keep himself dominant, there is no plot armor to protect him in reality
I met the English dub voice actors for Joey, Mai, and Kaiba the other day at a convention. It was pretty sweet! I got Joey's voice actor to do the meme face, and had an awesome conversation with Mai's. She even signed my copy of Harpie's feather duster. It was absolutely amazing!
Sorry you met the voice actores of joey and kaiba, and they did not try to kill each other
Jokes aside you are one lucky man
Which Mai voice actor was it? Was it the original?
@@blackmetal4546 It was the original Megan Hollingshead. She also voiced Shizune from Naruto and Nurse Joy from Pokemon just to name a few.
Same here. I met both joey and marik voice actor in london mcm comic con back in 2019. Both was hella nice and the joey voice actor did the chin face all the time.
What convention was it?
cannot fathom why Lord of the Red is 8, when most of its monsters are 7
Anime, unfortunately
Criminal
So that you run 3 Black Stone of Legends, 3 Metal Blacks, and 3 Red Eyes Lvl 7s proly; but for negligible damage imo, considering.
Lord of red, lorewise is a ritual between red eyes black dragon and the player. That's why the ritual magic is called "Red Eyes Transmigration" the soul of Red Eyes transmigrates into the player's body after the ritual finishes.
Which is the reason for its statistics. the player is presumed to be a level 1 normal monster with 0 atk and 100 def, combine that with red eyes and you get the lord of red.
Cards like Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon, Tri-Horned Dragon or Dragon Core Hexer or even a Blue-Eyes White Dragon are ideal food in the hand for him
Red-Eyes being this weird mish-mash of almost conflicting strategies and mechanics, while still having a solid foundation admittebly, feels almost too true to Joey's character
Half of them aren’t even “Joey” cards.
I’d be willing to say:
All Xyz and evolved versions of red-eyes that aren’t a fusion of famous joey monsters are moreso Atticus cards:
This list includes:
Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon
Red-Eyes Darkness Metal
Darkness Metal, the Dragon of Dark Steel
Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon
Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon
Return of the Red-Eyes
Red-Eyes Burn
Red-Eyes Wyvern
Black stone of Legend
And Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon definitely feels moreso like an evolved version on theme with Atticus.
The Joey red-eyes cards are:
All of the fusions
Red-eyes retro dragon
Red-eyes baby dragon
Gearfried the Red-Eyes iron knight
Red-Eyes Soul (possessed Joey)
Dragon Nails
Black Metal Dragon
The rituals
Inferno Fire Blast
Idk which character it belongs to:
Black stone of legend
Red-eyes black meteor dragon
Joey’s themes:
Equips, Burn, Rituals, and Fusion
Atticus themes:
Evolution, Burn, Revival
@@Exisist5151Meteor is actually Yugi because of the s0 movie
Red-Eyes feels all over the place with fusions, unions, rituals, geminis.
It's been a while since I played YuGiOh, but it feels like they had no idea on what to do with the archetype that they kept trying something new with each pack.
They can't make good red-eyes support without accidently power up dragon link. So red-eyes just have to take a bullet.
I mean that is lore accurate if it's supposed to follow Joey's deck. His deck is litterely all over the place.
They should have just done and stuck with eitherba spell summon or burn style for the deck
@@nattapakniranittikul they could just lock it into Red-Eyes named monsters Dx

now that's just a blatant lie
Its strange how Black Magician and Blue-Eyes have such simple and cohesive strategies; Hard and fast special summons with continuous or banish effects to protect their monsters, meanwhile Red-Eyes is just all over the place with no consistency at all. Gemini, Burn, GY Summon, Equip/Union, its legit all over the place and that's just freaking sad. They should have stuck to a single concept for Red-Eyes but someone got drunk when designing Joey's cards.
Fits perfectly with its user doesn't it?
It’s the Genex problem. They looked at a thing the deck was doing, noticed it wasn’t working well, shifted to something else, noticed that wasn’t either, and kept going. Burn/Equip-Union/and GY summon is enough together to make for a unique and streamlined theme with maybe a few extra luck-themed Joey cards. We actually somehow managed to get all of Fusion/Synchro/Xyz/Link even though Zombie is barely a REBD, to tout a thing that even DM and BEWD can’t. Joey would probably think that’s enough.
I personally believe that Red-Eyes is where Konami puts the scrap concept for the good Blue-Eyes and DM support
@@runningoncylinders3829 it is really impressive how shit both ally of justice and worms are since even genex seems at least sorta playable in comparison.
@@ismailkeskinklc5300ally of justice maybe shit but just like ice barrier, they have good synchro. Can't say the same about worms, they actually have legit swarm combo which is even stronger now due to the existences of link monsters.
My biggest problem with original Red-Eyes was how it was 100 attack weaker than Summoned Skull but needed a whole other tribute.
he should have been 2800 base
It sort of applies to Summoned Skull and Dark Magician as well. Why in the world is Dark Magician as strong as Summoned Skull and is harder to play? This was all the more glaring since both cards belonged to the same character. Magician was supposed to be Yugi's ace card, so why would there be a card in the deck that is strictly better than Magician?
@@maciekpiotrowski3178No summon restrictions by levels very early on + already more support spells and cards for DM maybe? DM-Girl and thousand knives were already a thing I think (maybe Dark Magic attack as well but I’m not sure).
Funny considering the current state of Summoned Skull (pratically useless as both its own archetype and also the extended Archfiend group) while DM and Red-Eyes are still somewhat playable
Re-Eyes, the cousin archetype to the Eyes Restrict archetype.
I remember building this in Master Duel right in the beginning. It was also the first deck I dusted when I started building a new deck afterward. It's a shame Red-eyes suffers like this.
Same.... went into Red-Eyes thinking Dragoon would be legal, and wound up making Red-Eyes/Infernoble instead; Slash isn't an amazing negate, but backing it up with Immortal Phoenix Gearfried and Red-Eyes Fang With Chain stole quite a few games for me
The archetype was so fed up with not being used that they changed to the REEEEEEEEE-Eyes!
Duel Logs really making me wonder if Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon actually existed. That was my boss monster as a kid!
He just needs more support cards bad to cater to him, even if he is spicy in Lair Of Darkness deck, you can tag him out with Duality spell card for Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon or Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon or House Dragonmaid
@@RedEyeKing313Xhe needs a retrain tbh
Hey DuelLogs, here’s a couple random cards that might be good for Unknown Side, I heard about them when binging on Reversal Quiz.
1. Sanwitch - This card came to TCG the same day Sangan and Witch of the Black Forest were banned, meaning it was actually illegal to be brought out by normal means, only Magical Scientist.
2. Ancient Leaf - The card was mass bought out by the public because of a mass-spread rumor that Master Rule 4 would change the starting Life Points to 10,000.
3. Honest - The maximum Ghost Rare version of this card was SO shiny that there are reports of it’s picture reflecting through it’s users’ glasses and could be seen by opponent.
Did you have that ghost rare?
@@RexOedipus. No I did not, I don't collect physical cards. But if I had to guess it would have something to do with picking up the car and angling it in a way that also shines light
I can't believe Flare Metal came out in the SECOND SUPPORT WAVE
They got it right almost immediately and then completely veered off course
yeah more xyz support would have been great
@@diamonshade7484 its more disgusting but they should have stuck with the burn rather than Xyz itself. At the time the deck had a solid butn thing going on with Flare, red eyes burn and inferno. I think this was a good identity for red eyes. Sure it would be a degenarate play style but it was where the archetypse shined. Though I guess this was wxactly why Konami didnt want to go down this route. When burn decks and mill decks gets good the game suffers so they wanted to try other things but it didnt work. You can see this from the archetype cards there is always some sort of burn card added periodically.
The archetype really encompasess Red-eyes it has so much *potential* if given the right cards which is such a shame since it's my favorite archetype.
At the mean time, I thought of a sub-archetype for Red-eyes where they all have "metal" in the name and encompasses all the summoning methods. The main gimmick is them manipulating their atk. Some doubles their atk, others halves the opponent's monster's atk, others deal burn damage depending on the atk while some have a metalmorph like effect. Some names I have are Red-eyes Rare Metal Dragon (Advance/Tribute), Red-eyes Heavy Metal Dragon (Fusion), Red-eyes Hot Metal Dragon (Xyz), Red-eyes Scrap Metal Dragon (Synchro) Red-eyes Refined Metal Dragon (Link), Red-eyes Old Metal Dragon (Ritual), Red-eyes Trans Metal Dragon (Pendulum).
1st of, what is advanced?
2nd of, Add tribute and pendelum.
3rd of, it IS a great idea, metals are half the good of red eyes... Literaly, so them doing it would be better then the clown joke of the "eyes of red" as most think "what red eyes has blue eyes does too and the other way".
But i think they would be more like small monsters, like scrap metal dragon as lv 3 tuner, then the syncro would be something like "red eyes scarb meteor scrap dragon", but solid idea non the less.
I for one thout of a "red-eyes gemini" card that would turn this useless part of the deck to the strongest:
If the deck has atleast 30 cards in tottal with red eyes in name or text you can banish this card, and for the rest of the doul ALL gemini monsters (not just red eyes) you originaly owns gain there effects without the need to summen them again! All become liget vanila monsters all the time, even if they should be negated or in deck!
But this us the most important effect: if there original owner used them in anyway to summon a red eyes monster or one has red eyes in text, those monsters GAIN the gemini monster, and if the effect has a name it changes to that monster's current/original name (if more then one monster chared the same name but diff originals then it becomes the original name)
@@thedarkebika9488 1) Advance is just another name for Tribute summoning.
2) For a Red-eyes pendulum card maybe Red-eyes Solid Metal Dragon and Red-eyes Liquid Metal Dragon or perhaps Red-eyes Trans Metal Dragon.
3) As for the metal monsters, I only thought of these at the top of my head to be boss monsters but their will certainly be lower level supports in this archetype.
4) That's one way to fix Geminis.
One of the things that I heard about Red-Eyes is that it’s “too fair” to be good. Most of the archetype’s cards have some restriction to them that prevents them from being great.
I so badly want new good red eyes support. I want a retrain of red eyes darkness dragon. My absolute favorite card of all time. Needs better summon requirements and built in protection instead of just insane attack boosts
He needs support cards bad to cater to him, even if he is spicy in Lair Of Darkness deck, you can tag him out with Duality spell card for Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon or Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon or House Dragonmaid
same
As someone who loved Black Skull Dragon as a kid and still does, seeing Red Eyes and summoned skull both go nowhere is just so sad.
B. Skull Dragon is and will always be a legendary card amongst those who grew up with the initial release of the game.
it forever saddens me how middling new summoned skull and redeyes cards are
Red-Eyes Bystial Dragon Link/Red-Eyes Bystial Branded both exists
You underestimate Red-Eyes Soul's ability to SS on your turn as Masquerena, trap cards/decks, quick play spells (like rank up and fusion spells) can SS cards on your turn to try an interrupt you or protect their monsters from removal. It also de-bricks and potential hands in your deck, putting them in the GY where you want them, and is deck thinning to draw your burn cards quicker. So he can be unreliable but he is an extender. That burn is also not insignificant in a deck that burns your opponent for decent chunks frequently.
Yea. It’s not in master duel yet but it should help red eyes a lot
The times I’ve lost to red eyes decks, it’s the massive burn damage
Ah yes the Re-Eyes archetype 😂
Let's be honest, if you're playing the pure variant you will probably have red-eyes from screaming Reeeeee!
Re-Eyes is one of the archetypes of all time
My heart breaks for Red-Eyes. Konami please tighten up this arc and give it an identity. Give me Dragoon in MD but only in Red-Eyes decks somehow lmao
Dragoon is more dark magician than red eyes IMO.
Correct. We should get a Red Eyes Ultimate Black Dragon that requires 2 red eyes monsters and gain negates equal to the amount of vanilla monsters used to its fusion summoning. For example.
And they need links, maybe their own verte to bypass red eyes fusion restriction or just a new fusion spell
@@travis51killer01 actually their link 4 is pretty badass and focused on not spamming links. But your Red Eyes verte is actually a brilliant idea dude, Konami hear you.
@@MateFold My idea for a red eyes ultimate:
Red Eyes Ultimate Fusion
Spell card
You can fusion summon one "Red Eyes Ultimate Black Dragon" from your extra deck by using cards from your hand or deck as material. After this card resolves, you cannot activate cards or effects unless they contain "Red Eyes" in their name or in their card text. You can only activate one "Red Eyes Ultimate Fusion" per turn.
Red Eyes Ultimate Black Dragon
4000 attack 3500 Defense
Level 12 Dark Dragon
Red Eyes Black Dragon + Red Eyes Black Dragon + Red Eyes Black Dragon
This card must be fusion summoned. Up to 3 times per turn, if this card was fusion summoned this turn, you can discard 1 card; special summon one Red Eyes Black Dragon from your graveyard. During the turn this effect was activated, you can only special summon monsters with "Red Eyes" in it's name or card description. Once per turn, if this card would be sent to the graveyard by an opponent's card effect, you can banish 1 Dragon type monster from your graveyard instead. If this card is destroyed by battle or card effect, you can special summon one monster from your extra deck that requires Red Eyes Black Dragon as material. This summon counts as a fusion summon.
I think it's a combination of mental lapses and fear of being too broken at the same time when designing these cards
Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon debunks that. Red-Eyes is just delegated to the same support a lot of other archetypes get. Where it's mainly just pack filler, to cash in on its fans, rather then to give the deck a chance of competing.
@@SakuraAvalon and Dragoon is banned in two formats as a result. Only reason why it hasn’t been touched in the TCG is because we had several checks for it in place by the time it came out. RE’s focus on burn and dragon support absolutely is a problem since Konami wants to prevent FTKs and doesn’t want one type on monster (dragons) to be vastly overpowered
@@catsorafgc That's because Dragoon could be played easily outside of Red-Eyes. If Konami had wanted too, they could have added wording that would have made the non-Red-Eyes decks suffer for even attempting it.
But they didn't, cause they saw the value in it being an expensive card that everyone would want.
@@SakuraAvalon Wyvern, Darkness Metal, and Black Metal Dragon have all seen abuse in none Red-Eyes decks over the years. It being a mostly Dark Dragon deck is a problem as if you buff it, you indirectly buff other decks that use dragons.
As for Dragoon, what wording could you add to a card that’s a combination of Red-Eyes and Dark Magician to limit it? Stuff like a summoning lock won’t work since both archetypes use cards that aren’t named their respective archetype
@@catsorafgc
Wyvern, I don't remember seeing much of. Darkness is the same as Dragoon. Meant to be used in multiple decks to sell product, only coincidentally supporting Red-Eyes.
If it was intended to only be Red-Eyes Support, they would have kept the original effect, or made it require you banish a Face-Up Red-Eyes Black Dragon.
Or alternatively, lock the Monster revival to only Red-Eyes Monsters.
Black Metal sees play, because it searches Red-Eyes cards, that either get or Summon Red-Eyes, not made to inherently support Red-Eyes, but just be a generic card almost any deck can use.
"This card cannot be Summoned, except while you have at least three or more 'Red-Eyes' Monsters in your Graveyard."
There are MANY cards that would need to be banned, if it wasn't for the fact that unlike a lot of Red-Eyes cards, they are locked to their archetype.
The re-eyes are my favorite cards in the game!
Red eyes is one of my favorite monsters and is the deck that got me into yugioh, extremely disheartening that the deck lacks a cohesive identity, i hope one day they give you the greatest support, my dear red eyes
Hol-up. Dragon link users have seen red-eyes meteor and it essentially allowed good extensions.
Summon black metal -> Link off -> Search REDMD -> Re-summon black metal from GY -> Link off again -> Search Meteor -> Dump normal monster (probably Psy-Frame Driver)/Summon Meteor
Meteor added to the Red-Eyes combo package and incentivizes using Driver. I'm sure a pure red-eyes deck could find something similar when dumping classic Red-Eyes.
I love re-eyes b. Dragon
Giving Red-Eyes Gemini Monsters is like giving a starving African child uncooked raw chicken.
How? The chicken can at least make top 16 at YCS
@@omegaXjammur Ah, I see. You’ve decided on the ez-pass to hell today… good man.
For a more subjective list, how about the Top 10 fun/interesting/unique casual archetypes. I say casual in the sense of no competitive success aside from maybe as a small, 2-3ish card engine.
I don't even think it's subjective to say that red eyes, a card that still gets supported, and sees some viable play(in hybrid decks) is a failed archetype.
Red eyes archetype is famous for being used by both main and recurring characters in Yugioh series first was Joey Wheeler aka Katsuya Jonouchi and lastly Atticus Rhodes aka Fubuki Tenjoin both used red eyes black dragon as their ace monsters
Oh, you know it’s bad when you see a main characters signature archetype in one of these…
Red-Eyes will never be good until they get a new fusion spell.
or structure decks focusing on its different playstyle
The best way I'd describe the failure is "A complete lack of consistency vision". No one has ever had any idea what they want Red-Eyes to be and so the mechanics keep changing with each release. The closest it's ever come is 'cycling" where it's fairly easy to revive them with dedicated revival cards and searches. But fundamentally it's always been difficult to get them on the field.
yeah the main issue through out all the styles is getting bricked up
Sounds like you don't have enough baby red eyes, black stones, and assault wyverns
U know the archetype is all over the place when they become a zombie deck support for some reason.
And yet red eyes zombie dragon, red eyes zombie lord and red eyes necro dragon are probably better for it
I feel red eyes as an archetype just never got pushed in the right direction to make it a viable archetype without much outside support, I Love the Red-Eyes cards and they are fun it’s just they are plagued by the other two og archetypes getting support regularly and Red Eyes supports just never seems to improve, you always need to run other archetypes to make it actually work. Hopefully Konami will give proper thought to this beloved Dragon of Joey Wheeler. The last card releases though is a great example of a good support card, now if only they could implement that to new support cards.
I noticed you missed 2 Red-Eyes monsters, but chances are they would have been frivolous to mention anyway or helped your case; Red-Eyes Zombie Dragon (which is an effect monster) and Red-Eyes Necro Zombie Dragon (which is a Syncro/Effect monster). Granted, they're both Zombie monsters and are ironically designed as Zombie Support, so the kinds of support they could get were distinctly different than the rest of the Red-Eyes archetype, but I think it was still worth mentioning.
He didn’t even mention Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon…
@@asnwolf4507 and those are all technically considered part of the Red-Eyes archetype. I like the idea of a series of cards telling a story, so what sort of story do you think all the Red-Eyes cards are telling?
@@dracone4370 Red-Eyes has a Time Machine so anything is possible. the Metal, the underworld, and even space seem to be the constant themes regardless. The Meteor Dragons probably have some connection with the “Gemini” constellation too. “Red-Eyes Black Meteor Dragon” seems to be the absolute form of Space Red-Eyes.
As for the underworld, Archfiends are pretty self explanatory. But, I do have a theory on how Darkness and Zombie Dragon are related, but also I want to make my own video on that, so not gonna say it here.
And also there’s Dark Magician.
And Red-Eyes Necro Dragon Lord
@@belzweis9568 I hadn't heard of that one before now. Regardless, it looks he missed a few Red-Eyes for one reason or another.
The issue I see with Red-Eyes is that it belongs to a "side" character.
Joey was one of my favorites, Red-Eyes has always been one of the coolest archtypes to me even if it's lackluster.
What I think they need to do is drop the idea of making Red-Eyes good via it's own unique set. What would make Red-Eyes good as a standalone archtype is essentially copying Blue-Eyes.
The burn damage gimmick is only really good for the Xyz's card but thats about it.
If they come out with some REALLY good Links and Xyz's for Red-Eyes I could see it being a solid standalome archtype. I would love to see some older card styles brought back to attempt a revitalized Red-Eyes.
Like I said, give it some good Link or Xyz's support; but maybe *truly* bring back Rituals or Syncros?? I would love to see some of those come back, although I know they arent as fast or consistent, but if there is enough GOOD support I could see it happen :)
A funny side note, I always pictured Black Rose Dragon and Red-Eyes Black Dragon being two variations of one diverse family tree. Maybe some how find a way to co-mingle them and make it work??
Love me some Re-eyes
Used to love experimenting with red eyes decks i hope someday the archetype gets the love it truly needs to shine.
I haven't played ygo for like 7 years and now I'm binging your videos. Very well made stuff 👌🏼
I think a Failed Cards episode that would be cool to look at is the Hidden Arsenal Archetypes.
Because of lore and world building overruled card effects and hurted on some would be great archetypes in their card designs and would be some pretty cool decks.
Red-Eyes Soul stands out to me as fitting into the new direction of hand traps that advance your own board rather than just blocking out your opponent. Bystials, Tearlaments Havnis, and so on. It doesn't do it nearly as well - but that's for lack of good targets. I do think it's a good direction to go in, making it so both players have more chance of actually getting to play.
As much as Red-Eyes is not good, Comet Dragon FTK is the funniest FTK that I've ever used
I always thought the Red-Eyes themed cards were doomed to be bad because they didn't want it to overshadow the Blue-Eyes stuff which means one step below that is the highest that Red-Eyes' potential could carry them. From there, being nervous about crossing that line by accident might make card designers limit what they put on these cards even more resulting in a just plain sub-par theme.
That's what I always assumed anyhow 😅
In some way i would like it to be full xyz 7 cause you know black dragón in black cards is cool, like blue eyes is more synchro (or should be more) and dark magician fusions
I always wanted them to reference battle city joey more by making red-eyes support with cards he won during battle city so imagine a red eyes jinzo, insect queen, and fisherman for example and make em all dark fiends cards to maybe synergize with the deck and have similar effects to the originals tweaked to support red-eyes of course
I have to agree with you that Joey's deck was the literal embodiment of throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks.😂
I've been a fan of yours for a HOT minute.. Recently, i came back to yugioh cuz link summoning deterred me away from dueling. I swallowed my pride and came back, only to find the new Red Eyes cards are STILL getting the sh*t end of the stick. Ill stand by Red Eyes no matter what. But i think its time to build a new primary deck. My deck just isnt fast enough to get consistent wins anymore compared to most decks these days. Mainly the wins only happen if i manage to burn 8000 LP but even then.. Its close. Thank you DuelLogs! You will always be the best and realest Yugioh UA-camr. I get my info straight from you and Konami. Nowhere else.
Great video! It honestly does piss me off how little care they give to this deck, I wish for one day for the deck to just be functional it doesn't have to be meta I just want the deck to be good
I dont think it’s really failed it just wasn’t meta
But please do a video on The Seal of Orichalcos! It was pretty iconic in the anime season but it and it’s associated monsters never did anything in the actual game
I play Red Eyes mainly, and right now with the inclusion of the new Black Meteor Dragon the deck is pretty competitive and that in combination with bystials it makes a ton of problems for your opponent. We just need a few more Card and we are almost there
Yes Red-Eyes Bystial Dragon Link or Red-Eyes Bystial Branded is a deck that can take you to diamond or platinum rank, and top a locals and do very well at regionals or possibly YCS
Ironically enough constantly getting so close to victory only to have it ripped away is perfect for a joey wheeler archetype
I would love to see a video on the Agents archetype, it's been my favorite since its introduction
It is a good thing that Alternative isn't treated as REBD, as you can go straight to Main Phase 2 after crashing and hit them with 1 or more Inferno Fire Blasts (IFB), but nobody seems to understand that in the Yugituber community as no one that has reviewed the card has mentioned it. You can't use IFB the turn a REBD attacked, so Alternative would have hindered the deck if it was treated as REBD.
Alternative can just also bring back Baby to then go into another s/t removal or stall and then Gearfried can bring it back using his 2nd effect. People really need to give Alternative some credit. Yes, this does rely on Baby again and they can simply not attack or remove it another way, but it gives you sustained field presence.
Yep, built decks and designed cards around Alternative for all the reasons you mention. It's a shame Red-Eyes Alternative probably is doomed to obscurity, and won't be added to any future Konami products.
you sir are trully red eyes player
Yes. Many people seems to not understand that the Red-Eyes archetype isn't centered around its vanilla monster but on Level 7 or lower Red-Eyes and vanillas as a whole.
@@totof2327 yeah, Return of the Red-Eyes revives any normal from the gy. If you can get it online you can revive tuners, or make rank 6 and 7 plays. The generic non-effect and normal support make more sense in Red-Eyes than anywhere else.
Meteor Comet, the fusion, can also get any normal on a non-once per turn. It's a shame Red-Eyes has such a hard time searching monsters or summoning monsters turn 1, because Meteor Comet would be a great combo piece otherwise.
@@DisappearBlade Yup. Give Red-Eyes a better Fusion Spell and a Monster line-up that actually do stuff. The deck can abuse Links to search massively via BMD.
And ironically it's also the most competitive of the 3 main character decks. Not on it's own, god no, but as an engine in Dragon Link. 3 Black Metal Dragon, RedMD, and sometimes Meteor Dragon serve as a great engine for the deck, giving free bodies and loading the grave with light and dark monsters for bystials.
Its so interesting to me to hear how red eyes has been played in the tcg over other formats. I play on duel links and i main red-eyes mostly out of nostalgia but due to the mechanics in the game with character skills, i have an entirely different perspective on what it can do. The skill Red eyes roulette makes the deck incredibly consistent. So much so that i can have any of the red eyes fusion monster i need on my first turn like 98% of the time. Its so good in fact im currently climbing my way through legendary in ranked. That is , Despite having to go up against the current meta with BLS, tenyi, orcust and the like.
The new black meteor dragon is a sick extender in D Link since you can just send a Psy Frame Driver from deck to GY to ss. It makes opening Black Metal a 1 card full combo.
They will always remain my favorite archetype even if they aren’t great. They are just so cool! I just wish there was some more support to make Red Eyes Darkness Dragon a good boss monster (like something that searches and protects)
He needs support cards bad to cater to him, even if he is spicy in Lair Of Darkness deck, you can tag him out with Duality spell card for Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon or Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon or House Dragonmaid
Red-Eyes Black Meteor Dragon can send to the GY a normal monster in your deck to SS itself, making a powerful support for...... Dragon Link, now normal sumonning Black Metal Dragon give you 3 links materials instead of 2.
Great video, the re-eyes has so much potential, unfortunately said potential hasn't been reached as the majority of support while being excellent, they couldn't even bring out the full potential red-eyes needed which is quite unfortunate. Red-eyes fusion, while a good card, could maybe be the culprit of holding the archetype back as not only the restrictions hurt the deck but also the fusions/rituals/geminis while good, does very little impact to the archetype as a whole as they have little synergy with each other even with dragoon. I wouldn't say this is a fully failed archetype as there will be more supports in the future, there needs to be something that could synergies with the rest that can finally reach that "potential" that it's trying to reach, it will take some time.
Is my favorite deck despite not being competitive.
I did managed to pull the FTK consistive a number of times when the cards released thanks to the draw cards as magical stone excavation.

Re-eyes my favorite card in yugioho
Re-eyes potential
This archetype will only be playable if it just stay away from the quote "Hehe.... GET IT!!! IT'S A THING JOEY USED!!!!!!😡😡😡😡😂😂😂😂
This video made me want to make a whole new red eyes deck and hope it's somewhat viable. Red eyes has been my favorite since the beginning
Re-Eyes Recolored Dragon is one of my favorite archetypes from my childhood. It's a shame that it's never been good in any format, but I still love getting the occasion win with them.
Konami knows how to make equip decks somewhat interesting and viable when they introduce the Noble Knight support. They should print more cards that play on the Warrior and equip side of Joey’s cards and connect them with his Red-Eyes cards. A dragon warrior deck would be nice.
Would’ve liked to see some honorable mentions to Red-eyes adjacent cards as well. Like Dragon Nails, red reboot, Darkness metal, or the zombie stuff
But I’m planning a Red-eyes tattoo so many be I’m not the general demographic lmao
as someone whos been playing red eyes in the current event in master duel, one thing id like to see added is actually a counterpart to the level 8 light warrior monster swordsman of revealing light, in the form of a level 7 dark warrior swordsman of concealing light, with a similar effect. i find the intended warrior to use for the slash fusion monster pretty lacking
I feel like certain archetypes fail when we look at the Card Game IRL, but if we take some of these archetypes and go to the yu-gi-oh games that have been released they are some of the most fun and strong decks you could build. I used to run a Red-Eyes themed deck in GX Academy for the GBA, mix in some cards for draw power like Skelegel, Pot of Greed/Avarice, Graceful Charity, etc. you could have your combo online relatively quickly. Currently playing through yugioh WC 2006 and working on an Armed Dragon Deck (I just need a lvl10 and a couple other cards) and once I have it just the way I like it (I played Pokemon TCG, the gameboy color one, a lot as a young kid so draw/search power is king for me) I plan to make Red-Eyes and Blue Eyes decks (just need to first read the card descriptions... so, many, card, descriptions....)
The failed potential of the REEEEEEEEE-Eyes
why the hell did they make lord of red an 8 star ritual monster when red eyes is a level 7... ugh it makes no sense!
What you said is true and pretty sad. I really like Red-Eyes but stuck in a state of having potential.
You need to make it up to us Red Eyes players by doing a Top 10 Red Eyes cards.
red eyes fusion can let u set face down defense
And flip summon
Ah yes the amazing missed potential of the re-eyes cards
Red-Eyes could be good, if it actually committed to a single playstyle instead of trying to reboot the deck's playstyle, whenever they come up with a new reference to something related to its many anime users (Joey, Atticus, and technically Yugi).
No mention of Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon (one of my favorite artworks in the entire game)!
I didn't know re eyes was an archetype
Ah yes Re-Eyes
all of this being true, it still makes for a wonderful casual deck. red-eyes is my current pet-project and it's one i'm having a lot of fun with because of the weird mechanics that were brought in over the years. i get to make quirky plays and set up interesting boards which makes it a really refreshing deck which makes a huge change from the mechanics of modern competetive decks.
The red eyes black dragon is the living embodiment of potential while the blue eyes white dragon is the embodiment of raw power. I’d love to see Joey and Khyber team up, maybe to see if their respective siblings who are both being held by the same bad guy and create a purple eyed gray dragon, but I highly doubt that would happen in an official media release
Does anyone have an explanation as to where the red-eyes zombie dragons came from or what all that was about?
Oh I almost forgot about that random sub archetype with zombies that literally affected nothing with the main archetype itself
Konami had a "Marvel Zombie" phase and turned several monsters into zombies and that was the gimmick of one of their structure decks, the retrain was made when they remade the structure deck.
Fun fact, Red-Eyes Fang With Chain and Red-Eyes Burn and Black Metal Dragon works on all 3 Red-Eyes Zombies and both Toon and Malefic Red-Eyes Black Dragon
Red Eyes was my first card. I am picking now the deck, including the most expensive, rare cards cause are really cheap.
I really hope Konami eventually releases a Metalmorph viable combo that actually brings a direction instead of Gemini/equip/burn/whatever strategy.
a truly iconic and legendary monster card
In Duel Links, you run Red-Eyes Fusion with something like Phantom Knights.
The Gemini Archfiend works well in a deck of it's own with the Equip Spell called Supervise.
Whenever I try & run both together I brick too often.
Poor Jonouchi. Still, he's my favorite DM era character so anytime I'm playing virtual tabletop, I've got a Red-Eyes deck as my primary.
Hmm, I’m not sure I can say the archetype is failed. It is still very much a playable deck compared to a lot of other stuff that’s out there. Especially when combined with modern dragon support and more recent RE cards, the deck has found it’s playstyle as a Rank 7 deck with a focus on burn, slight interruption, and a really nice turn 3 bomb thanks to Black Meteor. It’s not *good* mind you, but it’s not the mess many people say it is
Agreed. There are so many more archetypes I would consider playable...just not very good (at least not without outside support)
But ig everyone has a different definition of what "playable" means
I get the feeling that cards are "failed" if they can't OTK or bend your opponent over the table and sodomize them with a lead pipe.
@@windmirror7083 to me, playable means “can you bring out an okay board using your in archetype cards”. RE can do that thinks to BMD and using ED link -1s. I still think RE is vastly over due for support since its last wave was in like 2016-2017, but it could be a lot worse
0:00 Idea #2 for some Red-Eyes support:

ATK/2400 DEF/2000
Quite decent explanation, and I just realized something...
My 3 favourite deck archtypes (Maletic, Metaphys and Red Eyes) are all failed archtypes!
It really hurts...
At least Red-Eyes is still fun casually!
All the support made it pretty good for casual plays!
I feel like he forgot red eyes darkness dragon, I know that it’s also apart of the archetype
REDD needs support cards bad to cater to him, even if he is spicy in Lair Of Darkness deck, you can however tag him out with Duality spell card for Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon or Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon or House Dragonmaid
Red-Eyes is a good archetype, just gotta know what you're doing (not every card is actually needed)
Good in garbage bin or good in "make the owner suffer"?
in duel links i run black archfiend black skull with red eyes slash as my fusion monsters. I get them out by using red eyes insight to send archfiend of lightning to the graveyard to get red eyes fusion then get black skull and when i attack you can shuffle lightning or regular red eyes to deal over 4000 damage if in the right situation
How could you miss Red Eyes Darkness Dragon?! The coolest of all the Red Eyes monsters. Was basically Shining Dragon without the negate but much easier to summon.
Bro forgot the clearly best Red-Eyes card, Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon.
He needs support cards to cater to him, even if he is spicy in Lair Of Darkness deck, you can tag him out with Duality spell card for Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon or Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon or House Dragonmaid
@@RedEyeKing313X nah nah you just toss him into that Red-Eyes deck and you are guaranteed to win 100% of the time. He is the key to victory.
@@Lugiamasterbrony I mean you can run 2 copies of Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon, Azure-Eyes Silver or Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon will bring Red-Eyes Black Dragon back so that you can have Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon, his Metal form and Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon With Darkest Diabolos Lord Of The Lair also on the field. And any of the 3 virus cards ready Eradicator, Full Force or Devastation, or a Guardragon Cataclysm or Red-Eyes Fang With Chain on stand by. Then equip Tyrant Wing to Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon since all of these normal trap cards are consistent in Lair Of Darkness, and the tributing of your opponents monsters helps a lot, you can even use normal trap cards like Dimension Barrier and Grisaille Prison to stall and cripple your opponent to top it off. Believe me TheDueLogs has no idea what the hell he is talking about in this video
The Red Eyes archetype has good monsters, spells and traps but some cards aren’t that good
Pre-preparation of Rites actually makes the rituals rather viable and almost a must have in any modern red eyes deck. Unfortunately the monster names are still not searchable outside of pre-prep, but the ritual spells can be searched with red eyes insight, making these cards pretty useful as deck thinners.
Red eyes fusion is quite slow but very easy to get in your hand. It’s good as a backup or when your board is already pretty set up.
Claw of hermos is not easily searchable with red-eyes, but the monster itself does trigger certain archetype effects, and is a much stronger effect than red eyes darkness dragon AND it isn’t a potential brick like red eyes darkness dragon is.
As an equip spell it is much worth the extra deck slot.
Red eyes as an archetype has always been rough to work with but external support and gradual additions have helped it become more viable over time. While a good red eyes deck probably won’t dominate the board from turn 1 like other archetypes do, the cards are actually quite versatile and can make up some of the scrappiest refuse to stay down sort of decks out there once you really have a grasp on all cards.
Aye it represents potential, while Blue-Eyes represents power.
Good video.
