Mist Valley - Failed Cards, Archetypes, and Sometimes Mechanics in Yu-Gi-Oh

- Many consider the Hidden Arsenal/Duel Terminal series a mixed result. For every solid archetype like Dragunity and X-Sabers and strong Synchros like Brionac, you would end up with flops like Ally of Justice & Genex. Today's archetype falls into the latter as this is a series about the archetypes that didn't succeed, and unfortunately, Mist Valley was one of them

Once, I couldn’t activate one of these cards' When-effects.
It had Mist timing.
I was a huge dragunity player and always wanted mist valley to work. However, I never realized Mist Wurm was related to Mist Valley!
Mist Valley, the best archetype when not used together
Mist Valley Shaman looks cute though.
Down bad
Nah man apex avian is the cuttest
Still not Maiden of the Aqua
Oh you mean the chick on her knees with her mouth open?
Look up the Japanese art
Almost every Synchro deck released during the 5ds era, can be their own failure
I know you are right but ☹️.
I love those decks
That seems to be the case with every new summoning mechanic during there introduction anime run except XYZ & Link.
@@shangothunder1055 With Xyz and Link, Konami had got their act together, but Pendulum remains shit and I still don't see the point of its existence! We didn't want it, we didn't need, we certainly didn't ask for it, it didn't add anything or even do anything interesting, it jus lead to Konami punishing everyone for THEIR mistake! Thank Ra for Master Rule 5, I say...
@@CD-GamingMaster Rule 5 made Pendulums basically nearly unviable nowadays. They aren't as fun as they used to be.
Big facts. Especially those anime theme decks
I love how the best Genex monster, being Genex Ally Birdman, is a Mist Valley card in everything but name, and would still be one of if not the best card in its archetype if it were part of the latter deck.
lorewise, birdman does related to mist valley
*THE LOOOOOOOREEEEEEE*
An idea for a series you could do is "Cards that need an archetype" where you look at weird solo cards that just seem like they should have an archetype to work with.
As an example, Blizzard Thunderbird, a Water Winged-Beast card that would support an archetype of such monsters, except there are none. There are even only 13 cards it can summon currently(According to the yugioh fandom wiki), but the card itself just feels like it'd be an extender for an archetype.
Or Zushin the Sleeping Giant, make an archetype around his counters and building them up on normal monsters through various means to special summon boss monsters.
Staysailor Rosemarin, aka best girl needs an archetype
@@Sweetlesishere First, to be that guy, it's Staysailor Romarin. SECOND... You are completely right.
Great, now I was Staysailors.
Blizzard Thunderbird is an odd one, because it was used in the Zexal anime by shark's sister, who is one of a few notable characters in a later series not using an actual archtype. since it was meant to help summon a small group of rank 4/5 monsters, the best we can hope for is some hi-synergy non-archtype cards. However, most of Shark's support can summon them anyway, so it's unlikely we'll see anything major.
Man-Eating Hamburger needs a whole restaurant crew
Well he has an archetype now (Nouvelles) but it's definitely not the direction I was thinking
The trend of duel terminal archetypes is that the whole deck could be unplayable but they always have one uniquely busted card thats meta-tier
X-Sabers were good at least, oh and Gem Knights, can't forget about their broken FTK!
Don't let Gem Knight Lapis' appearance fool you. She's wanted in at least 5 Countries, 49 States, and some city in the backwoods of Canada for the charge of "Warcrimes against individuals attempting to play a childrens card game"
Your either have Worms and Allies of Justice being mediocre at best, or you have Nekroz and Shaddolls taking Worlds.
@@joshuahadamsWasn't Dragunity pretty good too?
@@stevenceja4706Actual dragunity deck, ladd loop, or stardust assault mode turbo?
Trishula and Apex Avian, the two best friends who kept getting abused outside of their archtype as theirs was shite
But unlike with Mist Valley, this is on theme for Ice Barrier: those guys are supposed to keep the three Dragons locked away.
In Duel Links, when Infernity still had 3 launchers, my go to lvl 9 monster was Mist Wyrm. I love that card. Bounce 3 is so op.
Those were the days. Why did they ever think giving us 3 Launcher with Break and Barrier was a good idea? XD
especially on the smaller board
My Laval Quasar, I also ran that and Trish. There are situations where that triple bounce is more effective than Trish's hand yank
@@ProphecyPhraseyou mean 4 launchers 😂
@@42thehurricane Oh yeah I forgot about the skill. XD
Well, since failed archetypes are currently talked in this series, i do think Mecha Phantom Beasts are a good topic for this: Entire archetype revolves around summoning tokens and using tokens as a resource to advance their game state. But majority of their cards are too slow, inconsistent and not rewarding enough to make even basic plays.
Like Mist Valley, the archetype has only a few monsters that seen some competitive play due to their own effects boosting other decks (Dracossac, O-Lion and Aurorodron for example).
I would like to see a video on this archetype since monster designs are so cool.
Right?
This series just needs to be renamed "Failed Cards, *Archetypes,* and Sometimes Mechanics."
Eh Mecha phantom beast has tops. It really doesn't compare to the garbage of mist valley
@@iokai4118i'm genuinely curious but did it actually had tops or that was just auroradon beast-o-lion engine being strapped in other decks?

I really love this series. Could you do the Cloudian archetype next for this series please?

Apex was crazy in pendulums
shaman is making me act up
Thanks for explaining the FTK with the field spell, it was very interesting and easy to understand.
I didn’t understand how he fusion summoned Fenix, where were the other pyro monsters
@@Deathmare235 Elemental HERO Lady Heat was used for the first Fusion Summon. For the others you use the Blaze Fenix currently on the field as material (so there is actually only one on the field at all times).
I too was confused at first, but this should be how it works.
I never knew how insane that field card combo was….
This is my first time hearing dragunity was solid and I'm SOOOO happy lol
Dragunity was pretty alright back in the day, just got powercrept to where it's strongest form now is as a cog in the D-Link machine
Mist valley had some great potential, but with The Attribute, Typings, and lack of Support or focus in the deck, sadly made it very lackluster. I like all Hidden Arsenal Archetypes despite their good or bad effectiveness in duels and would like all Hidden Arsenal Decks to get modern support.
Hopefully you do the rest of the Hidden Arsenal Decks. Weather if they have good history or not.
I'd love to see Mist Valley explored in the game again. Hopefully with restrictions that keep it in archetype or prevent degeneracy when splashed.
Birdman was based on these guys too iirc, and with Divine Wind and Avian doing things it’s not all gloom in the Mist Valley.
Yeah, the Allies were designed to help out the other archetypes when the Evilswarm were running rampart and mutating everything to fit their designs iirc
@@SproingBoing No the evilswarm was later, Birdman and the rest of the Genex Ally came from fusing the existing Genex with the Ally's of Justice to fight the The Fabled
@@quijassajiuq900 fabled? wasn't it the worm?
@@zeroomega3781 Allies of Justice did fight the Worms, and by the time Genex was brought about Fabled began fighting too. Most of DT follows roughly its release order, but maybe not always.
@@zeroomega3781 No no see, the worms were defeated by the AoJ Decisive Armour. Part of their defeat came from the assistance of the Fabled. After the Worms were taken care of, the Fabled turned their attention to the rest of the world and the remaining tribes. The Genex Allies were created during this time.
I've read the lore too much.
Honestly would have done them better to make them more like harpie's dancer. Basically having more monsters that bounced themselves to summon others from the hand (not just themselves) or sometimes from the deck like their field spell did but monster effects. Would have made it a better engine for 1 card synchro plays that also let you play Dark Simorgh when splashed into dark strategies or else having them innately work with another arch type, like genex as an example that liked to be special summoned and at the very least gave mist valley access to their synchros, which weren't all terrible and god knows both the arch types needed the help.
Sadly though, at the time both beast and winged-beasts barely got any support and konami just kept releasing more and more useless cards in those types which never worked together.
I'm a little bit offended that you didn't mention the interactions of mist valley falcon+big bang shot haha
That and Reborn Tengu! Only the Best Mist Valley Support!
no, you see, shrine of mist valley is gusto support that konami just decided to make in-archetype unsearchable for the deck. it even has their crest and winda, priestess of gusto in the art
I love how Yu-Gi-Oh turned out to be much more complex than admission tests for university. You don't play the game, you do a combo exam. 😂
That FTK combo single handedly made me believe that maybe Yu-gi-oh university isn't such bizarre idea.💀
I'd love to see a video on Solfachord, especially with the new cards they got a while ago
Speaking of Duel Terminal, I'm surprised the Ally of Justice cards haven't appeared in this series, yet. They've got two or three pretty good cards and the rest are just awful.
Besides Catastor what is good in Ally of Justice?
@@mermaid_hina2713 They have a hand trap that's, basically, a D.D. Crow for Light monsters, except it can banish two monsters.
@@mermaid_hina2713
There are a Handful of cards that are actually good. With some level of Generic use. Especially with cards like “Ally Salvo”, “Cycle Reader”, “Cosmic Gateway”, “Cyclone Creator”, “Core Destroyer”, “Searcher” (A great and just all around Powerful negate), & “Quarantine”.
The only other Synchro Monsters to use that actually do some serious plays, are Field Marshal, and Decisive Armor! Decisive Armor is especially Brutal!
Mist valley had huge potential though.
My 2nd most loved archetype, only behind Simorghs.
Man you really love birds
Understandable. Mist Valley is the deck I wanted support for the most after they gave constellar support. Divine wind of the mist Valley is one of my favorite field spells, and hanzo coming out back in the day was great because it was finally a way to get Apex Avian. Falcon was pretty cool, soldier was pretty decent, shamam had nice art too.
Thoughts on Floo?
I absolutely hate playing against floo, but enjoy most things about playing it. So I'm conflicted.
@@LightshaverConstellation I thought it was fine without the Barrier Statue and is overhated, kinda feel similarly about Labrynth basically being able to do a lot of things at the drop of a hat, and the best part of Floo besides the cute art is how it disregards the normal summon mechanics. Lab furniture can do that with a Trap, and Ritual and Fusion have a bevy of what a nice mechanic, let’s make it our way for free.
This series just needs to be renamed "Failed Cards, *Archetypes,* and Sometimes Mechanics."
Fits into the definition of cards, easy to discuss simultaneously.
Often brings their own mechanics too, so it makes for an unnecessary addition.
@@runningoncylinders3829
You say that, yet this one was ENTIRELY about the archetype *as an archetype.*
@@Bezaliel13yeah, focused on bouncing
@@Bezaliel13 It was the last point that the cards had no chance played together and that any use they had in other decks was another burden they had. They had a mechanic to them that involved bouncing which is more than what reviews on Vehicroid can say, but discussion of why a particular theme isn’t working as a strategy seemingly intended for it is a discussion about failed cards and mechanics. Bouncing is not a failed mechanic since it is powerful removal, Compulsory is pretty well known, but the Mist Valley had the start of something not favorable for their whole run.
@@runningoncylinders3829
Counterpoints; There was no "Failed Mechanic" and archetypal *interaction* is not under "Failed Cards."
Thing did not even really specified cards. It just overviewed the archetype and complained about not searching and whatnot.
Some of the Mist Valley cards were pretty good, albeit not in their own deck. I still use Mist Valley Soldier in Duel Links.
I miss this deck. Was surprisingly fun, even made an accidental burn loop condition with Falcon/Thunderbird & Spirit Burner.
Context: was dueling a friend & it was super-late game. all he had was Spirit Reaper, & I used up all my destruction cards & would deck out soon.
Falcon/T-bird, equip Spirit Burner to T-bird, bounce; Instead of conducting Draw Phase, Spirit Burner added to hand, burn, repeat.
What a match to test out the build... years later I realize I could've equipped Burner to Reaper, but it was a long-winded match & I was mentally drained xD
You should do Naturia since they only became playable with thier latest Support
This is one of my favourite archetypes for absolutely no reason. It's remarkable how many actually good cards they have.
Falcon and Big Bang shot is still the coolest combo in this game.
I think it would have been good if they made this archetype like they did the "Drytons", in the sense that every monster tributes another to summon itself and then gain an effect; they could made that "Mist Valley" monsters bounce a card on the field to special summon themselves, and then gain an effect (maybe an aditional if the bounced monster was a "Mist Valley")
Amazing video as always
My favorite part is that they limited or banned EVERY SINGLE CARD OTHER THAN THE FTK BURNER ITSELF. Very cool 😎
I love how you explained the field spell ftk.
so many archetypes benefited more from mist valley supp cards than mist valley did, eventually leading to their field spell being limited for being more useful in other meta decks
I used to love using mist falcon to return call of the haunted, safe zone and fiendish chain
During its time, yea, the Falcon was really good. I also ran it in my Ninja deck to bounce those cards you mentioned... and sometimes Art of Transformation after I bounced the Apex Avian it was attached to... making the next ninja i summon have a transformation card ready
I loved equipping my opponent's monster with Big Bang Shot then attacking with Mist Valley Falcon and returning said Big Bang shot to hand, banishing the monster it was equipped to. Rinse and repeat each turn with any monster my opponent tried to play face up. Also used it to return the fiendish chains, call of the haunted and ninja transformations.
Just in this video again is miss timing, could you do a top ten of cards that miss timing and maybe showing on examples of plays that makes miss timing?
Having mist wurm right next to the wrong text and saying the wrong effect was extremely funny
Trishula came in Hidden Arsenal 4, not 2.
OCG release date was Duel Terminal Pulse of the Trishula in January 21 2010. Much earlier then the TCG
@@soukenmarufwt5224 based on meta and set chronology mentioned in material, he clearly talks about TCG.
When pointing out most valley soldiers attack, duel logs says 1200 instead of 1700… my first time catching a mistake!
That ftk is so funny cuz so many cards it uses got limited or banned. Mist Valley, Birdman, AFD, Galaxy Tomahawk... no wonder it was broken!
Except the one who made the FTK possible :)
Molosseum of the Emperor
Molasses of the Employer
Molotov of the Executioner
Sadly for mist valley artype their boss apex avian only been used by other deck more than it own deck, received a similar fate like pankratops
Duel terminal archetypes for Failed cards and Mechanics? That's at least 8 hours worth of content right there
Mist Valley Falcon combos with big bang shot. You equip it to your opponents monster and the bounce it.
back then Konami designed around theme instead of cohesive playstyles , so good decks were mix-match of good cards from multiple archetype
I love how Thunderlord has a destroyed Catastor in its hands, but wouldn't actually be able too beat Catastor.
Top 10 boss monsters who barely fall short of being good. EX: The Bystial Alba Los
Man the original art for Mist Valley Shaman is so much better than what we got.
Can you make a video on the lore of the bystials? I'd love to watch.
Can you make a top 10 list about cards that clearly belong to an archetype but the name is slightly off? For example, mist bird clausolas.
Must Bird Clausolas and Roc from the Valley of Haze are totally Mist Valley cards. Black-winged Dragon is obviously a Blackwing
So today I learned that the is alot of kuriboh utility cards and wondering if you could do a kuriboh archetype video 😊
0:08 Calling Ally of Justice a Flop, is an understatement.
Just realized mist valley thunder lord tore off aoj catastor’s head in his artwork
I will say as a current dragunity pilot, That baby roc is VERY unfortunate that its a when effect and is only used for gae dearg discard.
Some other fun failed Duel Terminal archetypes to cover would be Steelswarm (bad Monarchs), Ice Barrier (bad stun) and Vylons (bad equips). If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you could delve into some pendulum archetypes like Ignister, Abyss Actor, Dinomist (unfortunately) and Amorphage.
I don't really feel it's fair to say Mist Valley failed when they didn't really get a chance to be their own archetype to begin with. I mean at least the archetype's gimmick is interesting and could be a pretty cool deck if Konami actually gave them better support unlike Ally of Justice and Genex which are either way to specific in what they do making a competent deck almost impossible to make or have so much going on that the archetype is just one big mess of monsters with no cohesive strategy.
Also it was dumb to release Divine Wind as generic wind support instead of specifying a Mist Valley monster as either part of the effect (the card bounced or the card searched) and should receive an errata. It'd be nice if it was in the same fashion as Naturia Sacred Tree's tag out effect i.e. bounce a Mist Valley monster summon a wind monster from deck, bounce a non-Mist Valley wind monster summon a Mist Valley monster from deck ("once per turn, if a WIND monster you control returns to the hand (except during the Damage Step): You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower WIND monster from your Deck. One of these monsters must be a Mist Valley monster.")
Question....does baby roc proc by dark world dealings?
It should since Dealings draws first and discards second
yes. being discarded is a way to send from hand to gy
Perfect! I can add this to my danger synchron deck
If you summon 3 Blaze Fenix, the Burning Bombardment Birds (I assume) with each other (since Lady Heat was the only Pyro monster I saw in this combo, and she gets banished with Fusion Gate) and the Battle Eagle Tokens, you still have enough monsters to burn for 8000 damage? Because you'll have less and less monsters.
You will have fewer and fewer monsters, but the math still works out to 9000 damage total:
3300 with 10 total monsters + black garden
3000 with 9 total monsters + black garden
2700 with 8 total monsters + black garden
He should have definitely animated it differently though
The biggest problem I have with this deck is how it doesn't benefit from sending cards back to the hand. Its only in-archetype support for that was Thunderbird (Divine Wind was released really late, and didn't get a Mist Valley replacement when it was dealt with) and what did it really do to use Thunderbird for those effects? Shaman's ATK doesn't matter, Falcon is just Gene-Warped Warwolf if you use Thunderbird, Mist Condor's not a Tuner so you're not doing much with it and Thunderbird on its own but needed even more prep, etcetera. Apex Avian's powerful with Thunderbird's recycling, but there were no dedicated ways to bring Apex Avian out and the generic ways were pretty meh for a dedicated Mist Valley deck, and the game was a lot slower so it was really no problem to just play a Normal Summon to kill Thunderbird and make the real plays in Main Phase 2.

I always thought the first Mist Valley card was Roc from the Valley of Haze because of Baby Roc.
Technically it was. It came from a pack that had a bunch of random cards during the GX era.
Mist valley thunder lord should have that it has to be a card that hadn’t been bounced with its effect before in that turn but without the once per turn restriction

Wait i never heard of debreeze dragon. Is it similar to debris dragon?
trishula wasn't release in hidden arsenal 2. it's debut pack had its name in the set name Hidden Arsenal 4: Trishula's Triumph and it is the cover card.
They could've just made it so their field spell could only summon Mist Valley cards, that way they'd still get the help they needed without it being abusable in other decks. One thing to note about Falcon though is that Swords of Revealing Light and Call of the Haunted were still very popular when it was released and it would often to be used to recycle them.
Apex, can also return the field spell, not only monsters
I still think we need to see Legendary Dragons/Knights in one of these videos. Hugely important in season four of the anime, completey unusable as a deck despite being sold as one

I made this deck and then 2 days later the ban list banned the field spell and I was salty. I been trying to build the deck ever since. I tried to use the second field spell with nephthys but couldn't find a consist route to getting Thunderbird and avian on board and that was my last attempt like a year ago.
