- Yu-Gi-Oh is a game that is powered by the inventiveness and innovations of its playerbase. Because every deck, good or bad, has someone behind it trying to figure out just how to break it.
But the opposite is also true, because no matter how invincible a deck might appear in the metagame, every deck has a weakness, it’s just a matter of finding it.
In both cases, deckbuilders are often led to the game’s underbelly, scouring its dense cardpool and strange new releases in the hopes of finding something forgotten or ignored that they can crack wide open.
Often, people come back from this search empty-handed. But sometimes, and only sometimes, duelists will find cards that can revolutionize the way a deck, or even the game itself, is played.
So today, we’re going to look at the strangest and weirdest cards of 2023, why they’re so peculiar, and just how they managed to sneak into the game’s meta

@@Warkyyykash is absolutely still popular, it’s among the top 5 best decks currently. However mushroom man only ever saw play in the ocg. It didn’t get any tops in the tcg.
So Gate Guardian is a middle finger to players who didn't make the qualifiers in the TCG tournament.

I'll be honest, If I were good enough to be one of those two players who put Gate Guardian in their deck as a joke I'd have submitted my deck under the name "Gate Guardian Turbo". And then laugh my ass off if my opponent in the top 8 also just so happened to have done the same thing.

@@ladyriethegoldendelmo5441 Some weak archetypes got support cards years later in the past, I don't see why Ultimate Great Moth couldn't. For example, before the 5Ds era of the card game, Plant decks were incredibly weak. But once 5Ds had an important character use a deck of that type, the card game got several new (at the time) Plant-related cards, saving it from being one of the worst types to focus a deck around. I'm sure other kinds of decks could get such a revival saving grace from them being a horrible deck to make. It's just a matter of wherever Konami wants to do that, as Konami has rights over the Yugioh card game.
Fun fact: Yata Garasu was supposed to be on this list, but it got returned to the hand of Konami before it made it to any tourneys

I think this is my favorite list so far. You've showcased niche or off-the-cuff cards before putting in work before, but hearing these kinds of cards cooking in 2023 is incredibly pleasing. Maybe in the future you don't do a list of strange cards, but instead you list off all the successes of strange or off-the-cuff cards. That may be hard to do, but if you're able, I'd love to know the history of some unsuspecting cards doing work throughout competitive Yugioh.

14:25: Literally how they used Acid Golem in the Anime
Yeah, Acid Golem just screams "Find a way to give the card to your opponent" though having to add "in a way that they can't just link it off" makes it a bit more tricky. Still love to see these modern "Mystical Rafpanel" style strats shine. This leads to way more creative Yugioh, especially when they make old cards seen as "terrible" suddenly meta relevant.
@@MarioMastar You can't just Link it off though because it prevents all Special Summons. You need to Tribute, Negate, or Destroy it.

My two cents
For those wondering why #1 can't be used while "Protector of the Sanctuary" is already on the field. Konami made a ruling that you can't activate cards of similar effect to #1 while Protector is active. Thus to get around this, you bring Protector on the field as part of a chain, this does not break any rulings since Protector was not on the field at #1's activation.

@@montblanc7285 I assume it wasn't, I can imagine with so many cards produced, Konami won't be aware of a certain interaction, I suppose then after seeing usage and seeing how exploitable it is, they make a ruling as it is easier to make rulings on specific interactions than making an errata which costs time and money.
@@montblanc7285The more correct ruling is that cards must be able to properly resolve at the time of activation. This can include having a valid target, being able to draw, having a grave, etc.
In protectors case, cards cannot be drawn, so any card that requires a draw would not be able to activate (people would try to illegally activate Card Destruction back in the day). Obviously there are a bunch of convoluted mechanics that allow to subvert this basic check though like the mentioned chain link.

And I'm so happy that Disturbance Strategy made it to 1. I remember how in Tag Force 1 I made a mill deck where I forced the opponent to draw and get burned with Greed.
Also, Disturbance can screw with fusions.
Odd rules thing: The cont spell turned guardian trio can in fact still be tributed as its the summoning effect of gate guardian (since the original problem solving card text/rules wording unification and magic>spell card change) as it doesnt require monsters nor from field (or even your side of the field), just the card names, much like how Kiryu and the one Ancient Gear can tribute itself. It would only be unable to do so if it had the true draco formatting.
Sadly TCG is mostly unified with OCG where they still have the pre-buff text that specifies "on your field" so ruling says you cant.
On you field is implied in all tribute effects/costs unless otherwise stated.
@@weckar Not only is it not implied (as it usually states in the rules what a card must be and sometimes where if konami wants to prevent soul exchange/monarch schenanigans) beyond for tribute summoning itself (the normal summon not as part of a cost), but even if it were implied doesnt change that its not part of the cost that the 3 guardians need be monsters nor on your side of field (unlike in the OCG text), just cards whose name are "Kazejin", "Suijin" and "Sanga of the Thunder" (you would still need a effect to let you tribute cards you arent the owner of such as the mentioned soul exchange tho).
On Gate Guardian: I know I’m a niche person when I say I use the original Gate Guardian in my Invoked/GG deck, but it has won me a few games before. Usually my opponent spends a ton of resources eating through Combined’s and Mechaba’s negates or even trying to attack over them that they’ve run out of steam to attack over the old GG. And it affords me an extra turn to just resummon Combined

While in real life you can use any monster on both player field
@@brotherhood7596 Gold Sarcophagus also had a better use in the actual cardgame than in the anime/manga. In the manga, all it did was hold one of your own cards hostage, in exchange for denying your opponent from using that same card. In the actual cardgame though, it has a different effect that is far more useful

yeah what you said about mite- yusei fudo is my favorite hero in yugi-oh and this synergy between messaging and actual history in the meta has proven him absolutely correct. sure its a good hearted child like moral lesson- but id like to remind people who get exhausted by the friendship is magic stuff that youre just being self conscious alil shame for enjoying the gifts of life. deep down its beautiful and rejecting sincerity doesnt make you look grown up. it makes you look tired.

"There is not a card in this world that is useless", Yusei's duels made me tear up so many times because of his genuine appreciation not only for the card themselves, but also for the people who love those cards until they become a part of who they are. The episode where the other inmates each give him their own one favourite card that they worked so hard to smuggle will be in my memory for a long time to come, hopefully, it's such a beautiful message of trusting your fellow human.
So, i'm mainly a magic player, i've recently started playing yugioh due to a firend giving me a swordsoul deck and i enjoyed it. that number 1 on the list is a prevelant magic strategy which is basically played in any format its supported. many cards are banned in multiple formats due to their combo potential with wheel effects (discard your hand, draw and number of cards, usually 7) cards like hullbreacher and narset parter of veils are constantly an danger in cube drafts or legacy/vintage.
As an addendum, I want to point out that in Yu-Gi-Oh it's trickier to do because it's illegal to activate an effect that currently can't fully resolve. In Yu-Gi-Oh you need to find a way to activate disturbance while the opponent can draw and then chain something to lock them out of drawing on top. It's my understanding that things don't work that way in magic; you can activate a card that cycles the hand while they are already locked out of drawing, you can "fail to find" a card in your deck, etc.

It's still effective even in today's meta. Heck I'm using it recently on snake eyes deck at master duel just to hopefully avoid handtraps as possible.

I've always seen acid golem as a monster related to lava golem and grinder golem except you actually can use acid golem for a couple turns. It's really cool to see acid golem joining it's cousin golems in locking and disrupting the opponent in a strange and double edged way.

I've been using axe of fools for years and years. So good to see it managing wins because everyones been sleeping on it. It's so versatile!! You can use it on your own monsters who have negative effects and it's just a flat negate for an opponents monster
How about the Top 10 most complained about cards that were never fully banned. So, cards that people wanted banned but were only ever limited, semi-limited, or never hit at all.

~Before Nebra Disk: I made Chronomaly a scary Spam Xyz Deck with "Inferno Reckless Summon" and "Debris Dragon" targeting "Chornomaly Trebuchet" {and later Knot}.
~And then after "U.A" 2nd way of Support: Tour Guide+Scarm for MX-Saber was fine; BUT also going into No49 Fortune tune to Loop The Tour Guides was just gross, but it worked!!!!

Pulling out the Obi-Wan 'Now there's a name I've not heard in some time' when Marionette Mite popped up at 2, then again at 1 for Disturbance Strategy. I absolutely remember the pack I opened where I pulled Mite. I think I even still have my copy of it sitting with my old burn deck.

Yeah, I love the old cards coming to modern, but gosh I miss the 90s style artwork where they looked so radical and less "realistic". It's like hearing a modern player say "You can use your favorite monster...you're just going to lose, but nothing's stopping you". At least the Rush Duel card art is sweet and has that classic style but updated to make them look better drawn.
Yeah GG and it's pieces all have wonderful artwork, I have all 3 OG pieces in my desk right now though I don't have GG.
Shadow Mosquito was a great addition to my Krawler Spright deck and it gets even support by Ninjitsu Art of Mosquito Marching.
Really made my day to see Disturbance Strategy + Protector of the Sanctuary actually work in modern Yugioh 😊 I used to use it back in the day along side Card Destruction, Ceasefire, and Call of the Haunted. Unfortunately back then it was tougher to capitalize on emptying you opponent's hand because it took a turn or two to finish them off, and you allocated most your resources into emptying their hand so you didn't exactly combo off afterwards 😅 but it was fun to see the looks on there faces when they had no hand turn one lol
i remmeber disturbance strategy being tested in trickstar burn mill, since it burns decently with lycoris + it can do funny things with droll and lock bird.but that wasn t standard trickstars i suppose.
The discussion around battle traps being bad give me a weird idea:
A battle-central control deck that force opponent start their turn in battle phase by skipping their MP1 and force them to attack if possible.
No idea how it can work, but it sounds quite funny.
There are cards that let you do that I think, I just cannot remember the names of those cards
At least one Gate Guardian player made day 2 of YCS Philadelphia. To be fair, it was something of a meta call, since the deck had a great Kashtira matchup.
It basically auto-lost to Dinomorphia, another rogue deck at that event, so I dont want to oversell the deck's viability.

_This card’s name is always also treated as “Gate Guardian”. While Face-up on the field or in the GY, this card is also treated as LIGHT, WATER and WIND attribute. Cannot be normal summoned/set. Must be special summoned by tributing "Sanga of the Thunder", "Kazejin", and "Suijin" from your monster or spell/trap zones. This card can attack thrice per battle phase. The first 3 times per turn this card you control would be destroyed, it is not. If this card would battle an opponent’s monster, reduce that monster’s ATK/DEF to 0. Your level 5 or Higher monsters can use cards in your spell/trap zones as tributes for their summon/set._
ATK/3750 DEF/3400
THERE, now we have GG component retrains that make it easier to search out and summon the others, while boasting improved versions of their OG effects.
Meanwhile, the GG main deck retrain lets you use the components in your spell/trap zones as tributes, while improving on its beatstick qualities significantly, AND makes itself be treated as the OG GG always. It even passively helps you summon OTHER bigger monsters.
I love how you still corporate the ATK reducing effect of the OG. Hell, i'll even make each of them become unique
Suijin: Negate the attack
Sangan: Reduce the ATK, and if the ATK reach 0 destroy it
Kazejin: change the battle position of the monster
With this, now you can maybe add a tech that would gain advantage based on the effect you pick
And another add for the Gate Guardian:
- Turn the destroy protection to twice per turn, and decrease it's ATK by 1000 point per protection (now it become a Raid monster that can be DPS'ed to destroy it and to damage you like in RPG)
- Now incorporate the 3 GG component battle effect, you can only choose one per battle, and only once per turn (you may reduce the attacker's ATK to crash it next turn, negate the battle if it a suicide-kind of attack or cancelling potential GY effect, or put it to DEF and use card to exploit it)
- Restrict the Attack at battle phase only to Gate Guardian or the archetype monster. This way either your opponent defeat your Raid boss quickly or you make the second one and snowball their field.
Then add Field spell or continous spell/trap that enable you to SS the component once per turn and ability to tribute the component to reset your GG ATK so you can choose either empowers your weakened GG or make the second one. Maybe add some extra protection so it would be more battle oriented
Reminds me that I use my extra deck as a utility box for my Charmers Kaiju deck where I use an effect veiler to snychro summon a totally unrelated boss monster that culauses all board -> grave to banish instead. And has an inherit revival if it's ever destroyed.
Not perfect but I still find it funny that I use some random card as a floodgate if the opportunity arises.
before i built my Gate Guardian deck last year, i included a copy of him in my Gogogo deck as another option for Zubaba General's effect

The acid golem tech was a thing in mikanko but everyone ive talked to in the mikanko archetype server have agreed that even with isolde its not good to run acid golem
Think about it, 4 material(2 for geonator 2 for acid golem) to lose to any level 5 or 6, which at the time people were playing(tear has malicious and some played shyama and unchained has both shyama and sharvara) or book of moon/eclipse, enemy controller, forbidden droplet, etc
Basically, it can work but you would be better off just making apollousa
other mikanko stuff
power tool braver dragon is just isolde but slightly worse(because isolde was just so broken)
axe of fools is not the only equip the deck uses, magicalized duston mop is the only way the deck beats rikka(konkon is an absurd card), metalsilver armor isnt great but is really funny against mannadium
infernoble knight renaud lets you have a better grind game, with durendal being your way of searching it
it can use the armored xyz package without the trap or spell because you equip on their turn(you use either giga-brilliant or cicada king to go into digital bug corebage with its own condition, and then go into lancer)
you can run the adventure stuff since the only thing you really need the normal summon for is the body that it gives you
angelica's angelic ring is the only way the deck beats dark ruler
Marionette Mite!! Back in the day I used to use that card to take control of the Lava Golem I had just summoned to my opponent's side of the field to punch them (or whatever else was left of their board). Good times...
i was buying packs if 100 commons, for 1 dollar, and found a genuine Gate Guardian in one of them, and boy, was I happy to find that gem of a card hidden inside
I just thought of something too. That rank 3 acid golem combine with AXA false negates, it's a fact. Therefore, you don't have to pay its cost and you still have a 3000 beat stick and you don't have to give it cheer about grant you. You'd probably have to go a few terms to get that going. If you're running a slow deck, but if you're running a really fast deck that gets level 3 is out and then you can combine, and then you happen to have ax of fools or some other car. That negates a monster's effect on your side you're set Providing you can attack either on turn one or turn three
The fact that Disturbance Strategy topped the list is actually kind of funny, because in my relatively recent playings of Nightmare Troubadour, I've managed to make use of that card in another way. You see, there's another odd, old Trap card called "Greed", which is a Continuous Trap that damages players at each End Phase equal to the number of cards they drew that turn outside their normal start-of-turn draw x500. I wanted to make a deck based on Greed, and so I ended up making a deck I call "Greed Punisher". I have my current deck recipe below:

For those wondering why I don't have Heavy Slump in this deck... I did some playtests with HS in there, but found that I rarely got to activate it before I won, between the crazy amounts of burn damage dealt with Greed and/or Des Koala, or the high amounts of battle damage between The Bistro Butcher and Silent Magician LV4. (Also, Bubble Crash isn't in this game.)
I swear that if Disturbance Strategy is a spell card, it'd be busted. even if it's just an equip spell.
I swear to God I remember protector of the sanctuary effect rulings was changed by the international Yugioh supreme Court and you just won't be able to activate disturbance strategy while protector is on the field because it can't resolve, that's how they got rid of the trickStar FTK Instead of banning protector of the sanctuary or trickStar reincarnation they changed the ruling for protector, kinda what they did with the pole position + jinzo + ATK boost card infinite loop were everything just goes to the GY instead of making the infinite loop
Yes you can't activate Disturbance Strategy if Protector of the Sanctuary is faceup on the field. That's why in the video, TheDuelLogs said you needed to activate Disturbance Strategy then use Chimera the King of Phantom Beasts's graveyard effect to revive Protector of the Sanctuary
This is exactly like when we used Trickstar Reincarnation and Droll & Lock Bird, you first have to wait for your opponent to draw/search outside draw phase so Droll & Lock Bird becomes live, activate Trickstar Reincarnation as chain link 1, then chain Droll & Lock Bird as chain link 2. Once you activated and resolved Droll & Lock Bird, you cannot activate Trickstar Reincarnation any more as your opponent is not allowed to draw

I play disturbance strategy as additional copies of trickstar reincarnation in my trap focused trickstar burn deck. I don’t play decks other then destiny HEROs all too often but 1 of the archetypes I do play sometimes is trickstar. It’s real fun watching my opp getting burned to death on there 1st draw phase. Lol
I use the OG Gate Guardian in my GG deck because sometimes you just need to float into something really big.

I'd personally pick a brick like card that would be useless most of the time but maybe have a tiny chance of doing something useful. Like Maybe a Storming Mirror Force. That's just a sitting duck waiting to be destroyed main phase 1, but it could be used. Or maybe a Mirage Knight if for some reason I was going Dark Magician. I'd prefer Awesome but Impractical cards that might give an epic turn than a true brick just to flex.

You could also use droll & lockbird with disturbance.
The same trick (no pun intended) also works using Trickstar Reincarnation instead of Disturbance Strategy, which a Trickstar deck can actually search out.
As a yugiboomer who has not been in touch with the game for a while, I am glad to see gate guardian got future support. YGO is a game built on the bricks of nostalgia yes but its little things like this that make me happy. A promise of doing the whacky shit the anime did has been fulfilled.
I have a question about the magic card for the gate guardian trio. You mentioned that the three components can’t be used to summon Gate Guardian as labyrinth wall shadow turns them into continuous spells. However nowhere on the original gate guardian does it state anything about the card typing. It only specifics tributing the three named cards. Which the magic card does not change the name of the cards just the card typing.
Are there official rules that prevent tributing the three when they are act as continuous spells? Nowhere in the gate guardian text says the named cards have to be monster cards just that they need be the unique named cards.
It kills me that the protector disturbance thing works now, but when I played it back in 2011 a judge told me there was a specific ruling to not allow the two cards to function together. Disturbance chain CotH target protector was just not allowed they said…

Axe of Fools with Magnum Shield on Destiny HERO - Defender making it 3800/ATK 2700/DEF.
I think Magnum Shield is overpowered for warrior-type decks alone, but DNA Surgery might make it more empowering Equip Spell.

For context in Yugioh Zexal kite and sharped dueled and shark hard telegraph that he was gonna steal one of kites number monsters so he used acid golem and sucked away its overlay units (xyz materials) so shark couldn’t pay the maintenance cost

Axe of Fools I immediately knew it'd be Mikanko, I run 2 Axe of Fools and 1 Double-Edged Sword, because both are crazy good to put onto a monster using a trap
One card I feel like should have been included is Crystal Beast Emerald Tortoise from Tearlaments, because when they mill a certain trap, they get a monster from an old, frankly bad archetype, that they can use to surprisingly strong effect. Sure they had a lot of just, really good cards that they didn't really need Tortoise for very long, it was still a super unique card that had fun synergy. I feel like it deserved a mention.
Another card I feel like could have gotten on this but reasonably didn't is All-Out-Attacks, I don't know how many meta Mikanko decks run it, but it basically just acts as the field spell but better, the Field Spell just says "If it can attack it must attack", and while it's harder to remove thanks to Hu-Li, it doesn't have a lasting effect, and if monsters are summoned in Defense position, which 9/10 times you're gonna do anyway unless you can break their board, they can't attack. Whereas All-Out-Attacks just outright says that any monster special summoned while it's face-up is switched to attack and must attack this turn. And the way it's worded, even if it leaves the field, they still have to attack, meaning if your opponent summons a 2k monster, you flip up All-Out Attacks, they now have to attack with that 2k monster, and if you can Mikanko Rivalry a Double-Edged Sword onto that monster, that's 4k damage twice that they can't avoid without clearing your entire board anyway. And while the field does arguably more, I still think All-Out-Attacks is a unique card that has fun niche use.
It would be unreasonable to give Mikankos 3 spots on the list, but there's so many weird things that Mikanko can do that other decks can't because of how different they play, that honestly you could probably find a way to make an entire top 10 of cards or effects that are weird that Mikanko use, like how most of the time when you use a Kaiju you want Gamaciel, but they want the two with the highest stats. Usually you want to give atk boosts to your own monsters, but they want to give it to the opponent, because they reflect battle damage. Usually summoning something to the opponent's board is an awful idea, but Fire Dance can do it, and sometimes it's a good idea, to either neutralize something that would do something in grave, or give you a body to attack into. Usually Equip Spells as a whole are bad, but they still make incredible use of them. And there's probably plenty more weird things they do that could make an entire video, might not be the most in depth, since it's all about one archetype and there's only so many ways to say "They can reflect battle damage so something normally bad is good", but still.
You could make this entire list just for cards used in the Exodia combo as werll.
In a more rouge like strat would the combo of marionette mite and zombie world be useful?
