I was blinded in one eye by a baseball when I was a kid (detached retina). Now 50 years later, I 've had cataract surgery, have glaucoma in my other eye and diabetes. Almost feels like it was pre-ordained that I be blind. Since a kid, I've always worn safety goggles/glasses even when cooking. Definitely staying on keto/carnivore, if the government "allows"me to 😮 and doesn't force me to eat fake meat. I'd rather catch and eat rats than eat that crap.
I was diagnosed with T2d twenty-five years ago, diabetic retinopathy followed five or six years later. I didn't do nearly enough to correct either, but to be fair I didn't hear about LCHF or Keto until about seven years ago. In those seven years I've dropped my blood glucose A1c to a tight 43mmol/mol(6%) & I'm in control, but it's too late, over the last twelve months I've had to have numerous laser procedures & a Vitrectomy in my one eye, I'm currently awaiting an appointment for a Ranibizumab injection & further laser treatment & I'm suffering impairment of vision. I just wanted to say that even when you take the bull by the Horne's & get your BG under control, it can still be too late, damage may already be done! Anyone being diagnosed at early stages of T2d need to get seriously medieval on their condition from day one.....Or else!
I have something called retinal vein occlusion. All the ophthalmologist wants to do is to give me shots of Vabysmo in my eye. I said no this last time and told him that I wanted to see if I can fix this with diet - maybe also exercise. I read that leaky blood vessels play a role and that increasing my nitric oxide would help. I am drinking some beetroot and pomegranate juice to increase nitric oxide and doing a series of exercises that are also supposed to help in increasing my nitric oxide. thoughts on this approach?
I'm 26 and I have glaucoma in both my eyes. It was caused by my cataract surgery when I was a baby but I wasn't diagnosed with glaucoma until I was nine. I'm on four eye drops to treat it so I don't go blind.
You can also have an injury at home. I know someone who yanked a vacuum cleaner cord out of the wall without pulling out the plug from the outlet. When he yanked the cord, the plug flew back, hit him in the eye, and he lost that eye. Be careful!
in terms of causes of irreversible blindness, glaucoma is the most leading cause in this group. Global burden of glaucoma in people is expected to be more than 70 million; of these, around 7 million are blind.
Jazzsnare, I agree. I'd like to hear more about the different types of glaucoma and the causes. My grandfather never had screen time. But he did a lot of reading & typing. Yes, that thing with no screen. He had a book published at 96. Had both eyes "scraped" at 97 & lived to 108. Still reading. I had never heard of different kinds of glaucoma.

Congratulations on your hard work. I would keep doing keto because it improved your health. You can add intermittent fasting to what you are doing, check how much added fat you are eating - maybe it is too much. And has your size changed? Do you have more energy?
This is a very timely video I was just diagnosed with wet AMD yesterday it is absolutely devastating! I’m 65 and I want you to know what the retina specialist said about diet. I’ve been on keto for a couple of years and enjoyed that lifestyle very much. I’ve had improvements in many blood tests but my cholesterol went up a lot as before it was actually low! She told me that a high fat diet with meat, butter and cheese greatly increases your chances of developing AMD. She said by eating keto I probably increased my chances! So what do you make of this information as I am so confused! Is this another lie my doctor told me? I just don’t know what to eat now can you give some suggestions! She even gave me a pamphlet showing me what not to eat! This is a reputable doctors office from UV of Washington in Seattle.

One thing I have observed is that more and more children are wearing glasses at much younger ages. I wonder if that has anything to do with our diets, which have become higher in refined starches and lower in nutritional quality. If there is any evidence that nutritional quality factors into diminished eyesight of children, please do a video regarding that Dr. Berry. The often facile answer is that children have more screen time than ever as a result of TV, the Internet, and smartphones, but I just don't buy that explanation, because I used to watch way more TV than I should have when I was a kid, and yet my eyesight is far better as a 43 year old man than my teenage nephew and teenage nieces. I still have not had a need to wear glasses and all three of my brother's kids do. When I go to shopping malls I see this phenomenon over and over again. More kids are wearing glasses. Yes, for most of my formative years, I did not have the Internet or a smartphone, but given that I am more than 2 decades older than my nephew and nieces, you would think that simply the sheer number of years that I have had exposure to TV and computer screens would offset the the greater exposure they have received. Something else has to be going on here.
I think some of the problem may be what the mother consumes while pregnant. Some of that is passed along to the baby and isn't much thought about. Even things that we've been led to believe are healthy could be doing some damage.
I have a learning disability with Amblyopia. Learned recently that I have mutated DNA. The eye disease is genetic on both sides of my family. Due to the underdeveloped brain of mine, my left eye will always be legally blind. I have 20/40 vision in my right eye and am nearsightedness. Been wearing glasses at 4 yrs old and had 3 eye surgeries. 2 muscle repair and a bump removal. I need another muscle repair at 30 but there's a slim chance of having any muscle left.
Probably. I put night time mode so it got rid of all blue light on all devices. Apparently your eye doesn't adjust the pupil properly to blue light, not only that but blue light dries your eyes which can cause more damage. Get rid of blue light and put it on night time mode 24/7.

I have been a Carnivore for about two months. I have had Lasik Surgery and Cataract surgery. I visited my eye dr and she said one eye had a higher pressure (7 points) than the other. 10/17. So she put me on Latanoprost Ophthalmic Solution, one drop in each eye. Within two days, I have severe pain just moving my eye, oozing, and light sensitivity. I have to stop the drops! I have an appointment with the eye dr tomorrow. I printed out your link to this UA-cam so I can show it to her. Did your watering clear up? I am only early 50s and my eyes are watery. Though not running onto my face, I find it irritating. One eye is more affected than the other. I'm on here trying to see if anyone is mentioning keto or carnivore helping watery eyes. Thanks, Sarah
@@Lea31706 Thanks so much for replying lea31. That's some great results you've got, and encouraging for me re the potential of my watery eyes clearing up. I'm considering doing carnivore mostly for mental health (bipolar II with lots of depression and anxiety), but have struggled with the idea of the diet being so limited and antisocial. I am not crazy about meat and have gotten too much of my pleasure in life from food, so it's hard to get my head around this, but I've felt sure for some time that a low carb diet is healthiest and have seen online that for some people they have needed to go keto and others have had to go carnivore. I have IBS too. I don't have autoimmune issues, as far as I know, but my partner does and was very interested and surprised when I read out your reply. I've known for some time that certain diets can help with these conditions. I'm always surprised when others are surprised that a diet that helps with one condition helps with many others. It makes total sense to me that a healthy diet would be healthy in general! Thanks again for your reply, Sarah
Any insight into ischemic optic neuropathy? I believe that I have insulin resistance based on previous lipid studies. I am now 81, a sugar addict presently under control using a keto diet for several years. Growing up I had many of the problems now connected to SAD. I am being followed by a retinal specialist at 6 month intervals for AMD. A year ago I developed partial blindness in my left eye due to ischemic damage to a portion of the optic nerve. I have been unable to find useful information. Do you have any insight?
Just eat wild caught salmon, grass fed red meat, liver, good eggs, grass fed butter, and stop carbs, starches. And if you want to be extreme you can stop vegetables. That’s what I did to get over top 3% of the world for omega 3:6 ratio for red blood cells. No supplements needed.
...🌻🎃🍁🍂🌶 in July when I went for an eye exam, I went down a notch in reading glasses strength; indeed attributable to my low carb no sugar high fat diet since March, 2016; there is also a non-food related glaucoma called ‘traumatic glaucoma’ which could develop after severe eye trauma or even surgery i.e., septorhinoplasty.
What is the difference between wet and dry macular degeneration ? And which is more serious ? And are the injections in the eyeball effective or damaging ?
I think the injections my dad gets gave him an infection in his eye. His iris went from blue to covered in white. Almost looks like puss trapped between his cornea and eyeball. His eye doctor gave him antibiotics. It looks terrible and he has lost sight in that eye. He is a T2D and has been for 30 yrs. They have him on 3 types of diabetic medications. I have been trying to get him on carnivore. Which he started now, but he is saying his blood sugar spikes when he eats just beef now. So I don’t know if I am giving him good advice or not now. I wish I could find a doctor that isn’t brainwashed to meet with him.

Find another ophthalmologist. Don't just take the findings of one doctor. Maybe he or she missed something that another set of eyes (so to speak) will find. I work for an optometrist. I know what I'm talking about

Visit a neurologist and consider an MRI/MRA. Vitamin K1 helps clotting properly. A, D3, K2 helps with plaque. Improving omega 3:6 ratio helps red blood be flexible. Eye blindness lasting over an hour can be a mini stroke.
Lol that was just a marketing gimmick to get ppl to eat more carrots. Beta carotene can be converted into small amount of retinol vitamin A in small intestines, not enough that our bodies require. Many other vegs also contain carotenoids not just carrots. But it's better to eat foods rich in retinol instead. Dr Berry has vids on foods high in vitamin A.
Hey Dr. Berry, love your videos, been watching for years and have a question. I'm 55, have a very active workout/life schedule and use carbs [ usually bread, pasta or potato's ] to help maintain my weight. On lower active days I adjust the carbs lower as needed. Is this kind of carb usage ok? It's just much easier to use carbs so I'm not eating 24/7 to keep my weight where I want it.

I am vegan so I eat lots of beans, pulses, potatoes vegetables fruit and nuts and have a lots of healthy food..without rice pasta potatoes or bread what's left ? If you're not a meat eater what is there if carbs are out ? Any advise please ?
Omega 3's are some very important nutrients for the eyes, sure! But how could you forget about vitamin A? Maybe cause that's only found in liver in high amounts, and it wouldn't be congruent with the general message that you don't really need it?
Researchers are stumped by the high rate of glaucoma in people with normal or even low eye pressure. Japan is a classic example. In a country where people routinely live way into their 90s and are relatively healthy still (as fast food is steadily killing the stats), there is a very high incidence of glaucoma. Conclusion is, through process of elimination: Genetic anomaly, yet to be identified.

Thank you Dr Berry!
Thank you doctor.
I'd like to hear more about glaucoma, the different forms, and how to try to prevent them. I am getting old.
I have glaucoma in both of my eyes .

Congratulations on your hard work. I would keep doing keto because it improved your health. You can add intermittent fasting to what you are doing, check how much added fat you are eating - maybe it is too much. And has your size changed? Do you have more energy?
You're eating carbohydrates,sugar.

They found in Japan (i think) that having the children outside for one hr improved their eyesight. Its worthwhile looking up the study.
He just explained it. It's fixing the diet.
Can frequent cell phone use (net surfing, emails, news, etc) lead to any of these diseases and ultimately blindness?? I've often wondered.
In that case, we’re all going blind lol
Probably. I put night time mode so it got rid of all blue light on all devices. Apparently your eye doesn't adjust the pupil properly to blue light, not only that but blue light dries your eyes which can cause more damage. Get rid of blue light and put it on night time mode 24/7.

Do carrots REALLY REALLY help ? Bugs Bunny somtimes wore glasses lol had to throw in a little humor.
According to my eye doctor, no.
Butter from vitamin A retinol, not beta carotene so called vitamin A.
Simply go Carnivore--Eat Nose to Tail--Esp Liver
Eat preformed retinol vitamin A. Depending on the body to make it from vegetable precursors is very inefficient.
