    Better for a 72year old to complete the camino by sending bags, than sit at home because they cant carry their rucksack

    So funny, people talk about the Camino is a place of acceptance, however, it often one of the most judgmental places I’ve ever seen. Constant comments such as, “not the real camino is one transport their bags, stay in hotels, start in Sarria, don’t stay in albergues, on and on.” If it’s your Camino, let the people do whatever they wish without judgment.

      I think that there is no much difference between life and Camino, we take this judgment from our day to day and place it into our new routine of walking… but what is actually different, that then after many kilometres of walking, this judgment goes away… and then when the magic happens! We connect to everyone, meaning we put all differences apart, becoming one, the same effort, the same intention and the same purpose! That’s the Beaty that we see in the Camino! Hugs and thanks for comment

      I have not heard of people saying that the Camino is a place of acceptance. A cross section of society walks there. But maybe it can become an outlet to face our own judgements.

    I walked from Lugo to Santiago de Compostelo in four days (100km) with a 35 liter backpack (I was 65 years old at the time; I am female). I did lose four toenails, because when it rains, your feet slip inside your shoes...but this happened to me before during a road race in which I competed, also in the rain. I do not know what I would have done without my two walking sticks though, as I definitely used my arms to propel myself forward as well. I walked with another faithful Catholic friend and we did stop for Mass, where it was available, and we did pray the rosary as we walked. I think twice, when I was walking too slow at the end of the day to get to our destination on time, my walking companion took my backpack away from me and carried both his and mine. It was humbling and I have vowed that if I do this again I will pack with next to nothing.

      Hello Patricia, thanks for sharing your experience! Yes, minimalism is a must when packing! We still find ourselves wondering "what can we get rid of to make it even lighter?!?"

    Well I am sure the people who originally walked it over a thousand years ago did not have back pack and I am sure they didn’t stop at all these places with beds and showers. Don’t over think all this people are worried about stuff they don’t need to. As one lady said she is not going to hurt her back or knees carrying a pack. And you say you need to suffer to be a real pilgrim I would think walking the whole trip is enough

      Thanks for the comment! We agree that walking the Camino can already by difficult enough. And yes, we all have this freedom to do it the way we think is the best for us, hugs

    Erica and Ricky, I think this was discussed in another of your videos. Many people view the Camino as a "bucket list hike" and a big party. Other people feel the Camino is a spiritual journey. Some people aren't sure why they are walking, perhaps to learn more about themself. In the end, they all have a different journey and learn different lessons. I know for me it is a spiritual journey. Suffering is not necessary for spiritual growth. I will walk less travelled sections and stay in less crowded places.
    This is why I enjoy your channel. You bring up other viewpoints and share your experiences. I am grateful that you share you knowledge. I bought your book and am excited for the experiences I will have when I walk the Camino. Hugs and blessings.

    I carried my bag the entire French Way. I found that I needed my suff each day, rain gear, extra layers, snacks, spare socks etc. Taking a day pack would not have saved much weight. My backpack became part of me.

    For me all the extras like having a bag transported, the decision comes down to a person will benefit more from doing a Camino than failing. So if sending a bag means you can complete your camino then send it but otherwise carry it. I am not in favour of making a camino too easy.

      I am planning my Camino, but I really have problems with my back. So yes, I will order a bag transport and I don't care if people think that I am not a real pilgrim. I am listening to my body and I know exactly what I can do and what I can't do.

      We have to find the magic balance of what is necessary and what is comfortable, as you said quite well, making it too comfortable is taking away from the Camino spirit! (Or it was what I thought) 😅💚

  • @Kitsambler
    @Kitsambler 10 місяців тому +3

    I think you hit the nail on the head when you connected the bag-transport-decision to pride and self-identity (of course, those two are related anyhow). There is almost a pilgrim-competitiveness going on: I've suffered more than you, I've walked further, I've walked faster, my reason for walking is deeper/more painful/more tragic/more significant. Particularly on the CF, where there are so many pilgrims to compete against -- and feel superior over. It's less an issue further "upstream" where there are fewer pilgrims. And, no baggage transport is available east of Le Puy.

      Camino the Santiago is like a real life with all its glory and not only….- it’s full of lessons to be learnt! But one thing that we noticed, more kilometers one does more understanding one gains! Hugs

    Tengo tantas cosas q compartir, quiero decir, hagan el Camino no importa la forma. Cada cual carga su propia cruz, no es sobre la mochila. Hágan el Camino con la advertencia que es adictivo. Yo por mi parte, no caminé suficiente. Gracias por su contenido.

    I agree completely with what you said about pride and suffering. I see that in Japan too, with people not wanting to take a bus/car/etc and if they do, maybe to get to an inn if there isn't one right one the route with a room available, they often take a vehicle back to the same spot the next morning so they physically walk every step of the way.

    Sending a bag:
    1) Assumes there is a "right way" and a "wrong way" to hike a trail. "MY WAY" is better than "Your way". Who mades those rules? What nonsense.
    Unfortunately, this nonsense also exists in America. "Thru-hikers are 'better' people than Section-hikers". "Section-hikers are 'better' people than Day-hikers." Who said?
    Also unfortunately, people want to feel like they're "superior" to other people. It's just elitism and self righteousness. Why's it always a competition? It's just walking...don't make it out to be more than that.
    2) Where do you draw the line at how much "suffering" is enough suffering? Then don't sleep in a bed...sleep on the ground instead. Don't take showers. Rely on others to feed you, like a true pilgrim. Don't carry ultralight backpack items. Maybe instead, add a lead weight to your backpack so it really hurts.
    3) Young people are more prone to think the thought, "What are other people thinking about me?" As an old man, I think my conclusion after 70 years is....usually, you never cross anyone's mind.

    To assume there were no luggage transport systems 1,000 years ago is naive. People have been using every tool available since day one. You don't need to pretend to be a pilgrim to be a real pilgrim.

    • @caminotellers
      @caminotellers  2 місяці тому +1

      What is real pilgrim and not is mostly visible in the Camino de Santiago… unfortunately. many other pilgrimages we walked, there was no such a problem, everyone was doing it the way it could! Only few weeks ago I was flying to Jeddah, passing by Mecca and the most pilgrims were flying there and then getting bus, no big issue. So we totally agree with you! Is there a way out? We think that it will slowly adjust itself naturally….
