My grandpa recently died and my family is trying to get her a pet so she won’t be too lonely and we decided on fish but my family got a .5 gallon tank and a betta with one plant so I had to give them some pointers and told them to come look at your channel for how to do a proper tank without water changes

    • @dawidjk
      @dawidjk Рік тому +10

So sorry for your loss, I know it’s a hard time for everyone in the family. You’re doing a really beautiful thing. For a tank without water changes, you generally need a bunch of plants (tldr - fish produce waste, bacteria convert waste to plant food, plants consume what was previously “waste”). You just need to come in and trim the plants once in a while (ie once a month or so?). You’ll also need to refill water into the tank every week or two (it evaporates). Make sure you have a light to let the plants grow, you want it on for about 8 hours a day (I keep mine on a smart plug that just auto turns on/off). I’m not sure if 0.5g was a typo, but a betta would be happiest in a 5 gallon tank. Hope this gives you a good primer of what to look for in MD’s videos!

    MD I have a Suggestion:
Talking about budget etc is great however I’ve watched your videos for a long time and as you admit you like to end up with a finished product straight away however for a lot of us this isn’t the achievable straight away, would you ever do a budget project based on A more realistic budget for plants etc and grow it out as we the poor growers would do at home 😂

Hahahah yessssss I feel this. I’m buying things as I go and I feel so dumb when I watch these videos like “whoops! Was meant to do it all at once eh?” Currently cycling new 20 gallon so I can transfer some fish into a bigger tank, has the substrate, some water lettuce, a tiger lotus from the small tank and two pieces of driftwood that refused to sink 😒 I boiled and soaked them for hoursssss the other day, but let them dry out because I got distracted with other things… and now they won’t sink! One is being held down by a water glass 😂 and the other is just floating around the top. 🙄 so it’s not ready for the fish but they neeeddd to move because they were babies that grew up and are now crowded. Have a cart open for new plants and haven’t pulled the trigger yet cus I’m comparing prices…and I’m still researching stones and if seiryu stone is gonna kill my parameters or not. 😅 so yeah……. That is a great idea lol “how to half ass a tank setup over a months time” 🤣

In this set up when there are no plants in the sand, will cleaning of the sand be required to remove waste since plants obviously won't be using it? Good one
Ive been using superfish products for a few years now and they are the best value for plant lights that actually work
the only problem ive found is life span but if you dial them back to 80% or lower with the controler they sell this greatly improves lifespan and the lights produce more than enough PAR to grow almost all plants even at 80% plus less algae problems
basically LED lifespan is greatly effected by heat generated but since the heat curve is expotential even a 10% reduction in power can double the lifespan of the LEDs
the retroled tubes superfish make are more affected by heat (being sealed in glass so no heat dissipation) than the scaperled i think but time will tell
anyway cant recommend Superfish lights highly enough very underrated IMHO they even give you a PAR rateing which many manufacturers seem to not want to give out
oh sorry but i think your female guppies look more colourfull mainly because the males are a bit drab
try magenta x snakeskin or lace strains if you really want bright coloured fish

but im changing over to scaperleds anyway as one scaperled is equivilent to about 3 of the retroleds so declutters top of tank
very pleased with scapperled and led controler and at the less than half the price of other makes where i am in Europe

MD and Matt may you both and your Families have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.
I really like the aqua scape. I had a 33 gallon long once with nothing but guppies and live plants had several varieties the produces some very interesting colored babies. The biggest problem with guppies they are so prolific so I put a smaller cichlid to predate upon the babies but I grew so fast it go big so fast it begin eating the mature adults. I know that a cichlid was a bad choice but it solved the over population rather quickly had to move the cichlid before it ate them all. But it wasn't long and the guppy tank became over populated again. But this time I saved the best color and shape and culled the as live fish food for my other tanks. And having live plants in all my tanks some of the culled guppies survived to adulthood. And glad some did as they grew up to be beautiful fish so I would return them to the guppy tank as they deserve to keep their genetics going thorough survival of the fittest. Actually it provided stronger babies genetics I believe. Sold a lot of beautiful males as trade offs at my local fish store at the time for store credit, merchandise and other new fish. I did that with other fish as well over time it keep my hobby going and growing without spending much money. I didn't make a lot but had a lot of fun and learned a lot. I truly like watch you channel it reminds me of those days. Had to move so took down all my ranks with the hope of reseting them back up so put in a temporary storage that ended up getting broken into and they took all my stuff including all the aquariums. But watching you channel has give me the urge to try again after 30 years without major tanks. I kept Betta tanks for my kids but they have all growed up and thinking of one large community tank. And watching you and Matt has caused me to want to step back into the hobby again. So many new things and techniques it getting over whelming and the varieties of aquatic creatures makes it hard to decide which way to go.

Have you ever had the weight of the hardscape cause a crack in the bottom glass of the tank? I know Tanner Serpa Design always puts eggcrate light diffuser under heavy scapes "to distribute the weight evenly so a pressure point doesn't crack the glass" but I noticed you never use anything like that and seem to get on just fine. Maybe it's overly cautious to do that?

Japanese or French Blue Endler Guppies, would also be a great option for a smaller tank.

Had to laugh when he said not a lot of wood left after the last scape, then he turns to a shelf bloody full of it 😂

Those are elephants ear guppies. I used to buy only females all the time 😂
The way you have the wood up like that, it looks like the side of a hiking trail and like trees

I think the wood pieces messed up the beautiful rock structure...... I would've kept it rocky looking and not used the wood.....

Agreed. Looks good but rock-only looked really "classy" and minimalist.
