- Got a few things to do around the shop, but if that all goes well it's time to introduce you to a new member of the fleet. I have been after this 1976 Mustang II for years. Now that the paperwork is square it's time to see if it will run and drive. This may be the ugliest and least popular Ford Mustang in existence, but I kinda like it...

Because of you Dave, the price of 1976 Mustangs went through the roof. Everyone is going to want one!😁
My job is done…
@@thedirtheadshed out here doing the Lord's Work
problem is solved when he takes it for a 'test cantor' .... lordy those cars are slow.
I had that same car, gave $200, tried to blow it up, couldn’t do it.
Sold it to a guy for $750 and he promptly blew the head off of it.
Who ever thought the II’s would be cool?
@thedirtheadshed
What’s the deal with that white Blazer though ?
My favourite part is dave actually lined the yellow dot up with the valve stem. No one does that it seems
Ex semi-pro tire guy🤙
That’s why they end up with a pound of weights to balance the tire, most tire installers don’t even know what the fit even is.
People love to hate these, but they are rare to see now. Cant wait to see how it turns out!
Very rare anymore
This was my car that was sold to Aaron and to John Mears and whoever. This car was great and I had it from 2013 to 2018. It ran just fine. Put some respect on it!
Will do. It has potential. The last 5 years stored outside has been rough on it though. Cheers
"Horn broken, watch for finger" just seems so apropos for that car. Jim has got a lot of cool stuff. I can only imagine what's in the barn.
Yep. All kinds of good stuff
I learned how to drive in my grandfather’s mustang II brings back some good memories. And that VW beetle truck driving in the yard was rad!!’ Awesome video
Thanks! It would be fun to go help Jim get some of his rides back on the road
I love the part when Jim fires it up on 2 stroke gas, and immediately puts it in the danger zone/redline 😂 that’s some serious zip ties and bias plys vibes! Great video Dave, can’t beat an ol revive and drive!!
He’s a pro.
Four Wheel Drive Dave, make it 4WD on air bags. Put some old school Ground Hawgs or the new Baja Pro X tires on there. Good stuff man. Like button energized.
Oh geez… that’s a project
OMG DAVE CONGRATULATIONS ON THE TEAMING UP WITH NATE THAT'S GONNA BE SO SUPREMELY AWESOME you two will definitely have my vote for "Dumpster Fire" 🤘🤪
Much appreciated! It should be fun
Awesome. I had a 74 Mustand II with a 4 banger. It was a fast back, I lowered it, 17" wheels, dual Dellorto side drafts, Ford Racing A237 cam, ported head and a header. I swapped out the automatic for a T5 out of a Turbocoupe. 8" rear end with 3.55 gears. Looked and ran good.
Sounds like it!
OK, I have a couple of comments about this.
1st: That was my first car
2nd: I paid $500 for mine about 40 years ago, so the fact that it's lost only $300 in valve in that amount of time is pretty friggin good!
3rd: That 4 bannger was an absolute PILE.
4TH: That was awesome, thanks for the memories.
I’m stoked. So many people reminiscing about these little buckets
My first Mustang II was a 74 hatchback with the 2.3 and 4spd. It was a fun little car and i beat the snot out of that one...literally. My 2nd one was a 77 Ghia with a 302 and automatic. The wife torched the engine on that one. Not a lot of new body parts available for these cars but they are fun little get around rides and yes they are just a rebodied Pinto...but fun. Now Pintos...I've had a number of those and a couple were V8 drag cars. Hope to see that one resurrected soon!
I just want a fun cruiser that I’m not worried about scratching
You don't know how happy it made me to see you line up the yellow dot with the valve stem.
Semi-pro retired tire guy
@@thedirtheadshed Samesies
UHHHGGG yes, people complain about tires needing 5 oz. of weight when they dont' have the stems lined up, or want the stems at the "top" of the tire for their show car...
Keep up the good work Dave. Love this FREE content and was able to cancel MOTORTREND they cancelled DED!
I like being here as well. Thanks for watching
A lot of great moments in this episode. Probably my favorite is when Jim says "His first time driving a stick". and was that a Turkey at the very end? I'm excited for you Dave! Looking forward to this build.
Turkeys and animals everywhere. Cheers
When you have to use excessive air to seat I usual leave it on the tire clamps and lock the rim in with arm above that pushes down on the bead. The head usually fits in the hub so it can’t go anywhere 👍🏼👍🏼 keep up the awesome content!!
Great tip!
Sweet! My first car was a 77 notch, 4 banger, 4 speed. Dad tossed me the keys and said "time to learn how to drive a stick."
Trial by fire
The only show I don't ff the intro, that's a jam man. Love the content Dave.
Nice! I dig it too
Great job as always Dave. Thanks for keeping the less motivated of us inspired and wrenching!
Oh man. Get stuff done!
Cool deal, can't wait to see what you do with it. Always cool to see something different.
It’ll be different and fun
I LOVE those cars! Had a 75 in high school with a massive 2.5 V6 lol I really want one to restore! You can put a 5.0 in them with no worries & still keep the AC!
Sounds easy enough
1975 Mustang II was my very first car, red, 4cyl and a automatic. I went through a couple of motors and transmission rebuild before it got retired to the field. My daughter saw it recenlty and decided she wants it, it's really too bad its been neglected for so long, it's mostly a big pile of rust now.
Track down another one.
Can't wait to see what you have in mind for it.
Just got to keep it simple
Dave!!! Protect your face!!! You are a TV star, that is your money maker!!! I can not wait to see a dave style mustang!!!!!!, what a cool choice for a muscle car project!!! My favorite thing about your bulids is your choice of obscure platforms, like your idea for a previa trophy truck!!!
That needed to happen…. Or still needs to happen
So much room in that engine bay to add a "T" after 2.3. ;)
MAN, that old truck was COOL.
Super cool
That’s gonna be a fun project! 👍 But i wish you were able to bring over Fred, get to Moab and have some fun together with Rory Irish. (trail mater) But i guess that only will be a dream. 😊 It’s sooo good to be able to see ya all again on youtube! ❤
Yeah. Back when we had $$ behind us it was a different story
There is a lot of upgrades you can do to that 2.3. People are always hating on the mustang II but i love them. No matter what you do to it you can't make it any worse they can only get better
Start at the bottom. Nowhere to go but up
When I have a tire that has stiff side walls I usually keep a little starting fluid which is either and it spayed into the rire opening and a barbique lighter pop it's seated if you do not have starting fluid you can use allitle bit of acetylene and then light the torch wave it at the bead and pop its seated works great on bus tires and pay loader tires.
Done it many times. Try to keep it to a minimum.. one day it’ll bite me
My son has a 78 hatch as a project for his first car. Can't wait to see what you do to it, they don't get enough love.
They definitely do not
Had a '74 Mustang II for 10 years. Was an auto then swapped in a 4 speed. Traded it in on an '88 5.0 Mustang LX that I still have today. Tough little cars.
You’re a dedicated car owner!
I had one. Same year and color. Took a 289 and 4 speed out of a 63 falcon and eyeballed and welded it in. She ran like a scalded dog. went through u joints and rear ends pretty regular but like you said, The junk yards were full of them (it was the 80's). Have fun with it we did with ours...🤓
So many good stories popping up!
When I was a teen in the 80's the neighbor lady had one of these. It was the v6 model and gold. Cannot wait to see what you have in store.
I worked on it a bunch today. Video coming soon
I almost never see em come up for sale anymore here in michigan. Excited to see what you come up with
Same here. Thanks
drop the body on a zuki frame and go wheeling...lol...
crazy ting is I had one of those mustang 2's back in the day with the V6 and I loved it. They ride nice and after I did some stuff to the engine it had decent power. But I ended up selling it to get an 83 toyota 4X4 and the rest is history... another great vid dude keep them coming...
I hope this thing drives decent
Awesome! My cousin had one in 87. It was a 302/ auto. It was brown, ugly but could shred the rear tires even while going thirty mph. Lol
I loved driving it.
That sounds fun. Mine definitely won’t do that
Im not a mustang 2 guy but still cool to bring them back to life, there is a chevette close to me im trying to get my hands on but the guy wont let it go, its about in the same shape and he drives it around the yard to keep code enforcement happy
At least it runs. That’s good
Lots of guys have put webber side draft carbs on the 2.3 and put them in sand rails.back in the day the lima 4 cylinder is not a bad motor.and some cams are available for them.
Yep! Still lots of hot rod options out there
When I was about 4 years old (in the late 90s) I vaguely remember my babysitter driving one same color as yours , hers was a fast back i think and it had a bunch of dents on the rear right quarter panel (apparently she liked to back into shit).
Kinda cool memory I haven’t thought of for a while. Look forward to seeing what you do with this.
Good old parking by braille
Yeah! Jim's place is amazing! We picked up a squareback from him a few years back. He even has my mom in laws old 74 bug that we sold a long time ago. 😎
Nice!
To make it smell better use distilled white vinegar. I had a car that was in storage for a number of years & had mice they peed everywhere. I used it full strength in a spray bottle. I used it on the seat foam the rug it removes the smell. For long term storage use small glass bowls with a few cotton balls & 100% mint oil to keep them out
That’s a good idea with the mint
As soon as a saw the bugs!!! I knew!!!! It’s Jim!!!!! He lived a few houses down from my parents house!!! Small world!! He still has my 327 I had in my nova in high school!!! I also bought a couple bugs from him!
Yep. He’s a good dude. There is a heard of us east county kids in the area
I appreciate you attempting to save this car. I love Mustang II's, but its not based off of a Pinto platform.
It should be fun for a minute
Whenever you get this thing cleaned inside and bumper sorted, I think you should head to a Ford dealership and ask for an oil change and a wheel alignment. And please film their reaction!
They would trip out
That was the car my parent's bought with the money from their wedding they left wv and the car blew up in ga I think while on their honeymoon .their 50th wedding anniversary is a few years away maybe I'll start looking for one to give them as a anniversary gift ,no long road trips.
That would be awesome
My 76 mustang I got it wrapped in a bow for graduation. Came with that smell of a NW moss car as well. Turned it into a rally car and just had fun. Very low car to rally lots of smashing the ground with the front end.
I can see that.
Oh man Dave, that rachet got you pretty good, love the show! thanks for suffering for our entertainment
I’m having a rough go at it lately
@@thedirtheadshed well we appreciate it, I really hope UA-cam works out well for you, I've been following since DED started and love all the builds and shenanigans.
Glad to see you're back!
Thanks . Good to be hete
That is so freaking cool. 1986/87 a friend of mine had one in high school. His Dad was kinda a car guy, his had the 2300 four banger, but had a manual tranny, his Dad painted it bright yellow, killer stereo, Car was so fun. They also had a VW Bug with a Porsche engine, but thats another story.
Good old days
My best friend received a 77 with a 302 for his 15th B-day back in 1980, we beat the snot out of it. It ran great once the VV carb was replaced with a Holley.
I may have to do a carb swap right away
Freaking Sweet - Those are my favorite Mustangs!
And who cares if it was based on the Pinto chassis, the original Mustang was based on a Falcon in the first place.
Right. All are classics now
Ya, that's cool One Dave I just got a 84 bronco II with 2.8 Cologne been sitting for 10 years hope it'll run has good as your mustang 👍🏻
It’ll be fine. Cheers
I loved mine. It was a beater with a heater and was similarly equipped with the 4 speed. Sold it for more than I bought it for and never really had any issues with it. I like yours as well. Will be a fun car.
It’s gonna be fun to mess with
@@thedirtheadshed you play I'll watch.
That’s awesome Dave! I just picked up a 1975
Sweet! We’re cruising in no time
I LOVE Mustang IIs! A friend of mine in high school had a slick looking Ghia with the gold mesh wheels.
Sounds rad
A-W-E-S-O-M-E! Dave we love your beaters.
It’ll be fun! Hopefully
Them 2.3 respond well to turbo's, im excited to see what you do with it!
Me too. Thanks
Can't wait to see your unique touche on this car!
Hopefully I don’t lose interest too quickly
Very nice!! The Pinto Elite! Mr. Esslinger could definitely help you on this project.
That would be so rad
I had a Mustang II V6 stick in high school and again when I was in the Navy with 302 and auto... Brings back memories... The VW pickup is interesting too...
The vw is pretty cool
Before watching the video I just want to say that the "Mustang" Mach E is right up there with worst ever.. I don't have a problem with the electric crossover, but WHY did they call it a mustang?! Sorry rant over, Love your content Dave I'm sad that DED got canceled but I'm glad to have you on UA-cam!
I’m glad to be here. They just needed something familiar that would help bring the older generation into the ev world
My parents had one of these when I was 17. It was also a 76, but it was the fast back version and it had a 302 in it. I loved that thing, until it caught fire… that was a bummer.
Oh, the memories…
I always hated those cars as a kid and was glad when the Fox body replaced them. Now, a Hunnert years later I sorta', almost, kinda' dig 'em. I keep thinking about Pintos lately which could turn out to be a bad thing
Pintos have good style
If I wasn’t 20 hours away, I’d want to buy that Ford Supercrew.
Mustang IIs are horrible, but Dave will make this one cool.
The two super crews have good potential
That things gunna be Rad when yer done Dave 👊🏻😎🤘🏼
I hope. Thanks
My homie had one in HS, he’s not a car guy at all. He loved that thing bc it was not a traditional Mustang. This makes me wanna get it running for him.
Sounds like a good time with friends
Those 2.3s will take a lot of RPM, give the beans!!! I rally crossed a 4 banger fox notch and it lived on limiter!!!!
Nice! They are a proven platform
@thedirtheadshed it went away a few years back, got the classic strut tower rot and I sent it on down the road
Awesome episode!!
Thanks!
Its the high end speakers in the door that's holding it back..lol
Hopefully they come back to life
Friend of mine had a 78 or 79 Mustang II. It was a pile but did hilarious neutral drop burnouts so it was a winner in my book.
Total winner
Man I've owned like 4-5 Pintos and 1 Mustang. Great little cars. I'd love to do a Honda K swap on one. That would be a hoot.
That would be cool
@@thedirtheadshed hey now, next you'll be putting a 2JZ in a charger... wait. turbo 2jz mazda on 40's sounds like on hell of a project.
For a second I thought the Mustang II was a thumbnail gag, because it looked like you stopped when you pulled up on the ‘69 Chevelle. I was thinking a Ricky Bobby clone for a second. Oh well, different is cool too.
Yeah. Pretty sure that one is not for sale
I'm very happy you are continuing content beyond motor trend the app and shows have definitely lost its way not very entertaining anymore when dirt everyday went away they lost huge assets. Anyways put an ls or a coyote in that ol mustang
Much appreciated! I want to drive it down the road and see if I like it first…
@@thedirtheadshed will be tuning in.
Looking forward to see what you do with this thing. It is ugly but I know you can work miracles!
It’s totally ugly
I owned a 1978 Mustang. I can’t wait to see what you do with it
Nice. Gonna hopefully start this weekend
Dig your channel, just subscribed my Wa. Bro ! Like the Mustang/Pinto .👍
The body is so rad excluding the B pillars.
It’s funky and cool
Replacing that old 2.3 with a modern 2.3 ecoboost with a couple upgrades would be pretty cool.
That would be cool.
Think of them as heavy Pintos. I've avoided V8 swaps in mine, because the engine is in front of the front spindles, but a Lima 2.3 turbo would be right at home (I've built 3 of those).
That would be rad
DIRTHEAD LIFESTYLE!!! So stoked!!
It takes a lot of dedication and some bad decisions
Everybody hates on the Mustang II's but I've always liked them, especially the hatchbacks. Glad to see more people are starting to give them some attention!
It’ll be fun for a minute
I like these. There was essentially the exact same car but the darker blue, sitting in a driveway for years. I asked about a few times. Not for sale of course, until it dissapeared one day....the king cobra was the best one though.
They are cool. I hope to go pick mine up today
@@thedirtheadshed a third super coupe/SVO or xr4ti turbo 2.3 and 5 speed would be cool. Maybe just turbo the stock one. Not sure how beefed the internals are for the svo treatment.
My wife had one in the early 80s. I still wake up screaming because of the nightmare it was to work on.
Couldn’t have been that bad
@The Dirthead Shed believe me, it was. Almost bad enough to turn me into a Chevy man.
At what point of our relationship were you going to tell me you liked Mustang IIs Dave!? I’m questioning all the good times we’ve had together so far! Lol… Rock on, build away!
I don’t really like them. I just want to see if I can make it cool
I’m definately going to preview “cool mustang IIs” on a bleep bloop search!
Ok, I saw 2…
I had a ‘78 Mustang 2 in High School that I bought for $500. The thing was a blast in the snow.
Good all around cruiser
I want those squarebodys. Trucks and S15s lol
We all do
Dude that is sweet !! Yea it is basically a pinto Except for THAT front end !!! yea I heard they are rare just because of THAT front end lol. MY buddy had a courier with that engine and tranny !!! It had headers and rims and that little sucker scooted hehehe I loved that little scooter except I am 6'4" hahaha did not quite fit hehe. I can't wait 2 c what u do with it.
I dig it’s ugliness
Hey man, the musty-stang kinda looks like a 70s Toyota Cressida, think itd look cool on some period small Japanese wheels maybe a suitable engine swap. Cheers dude 🤘
I’ve been looking at wheels
@@thedirtheadshed found anything you like?
My second car was a 1974 mustang notch back. Brings back so many memories.
Hopefully mostly good memories
You say its not much of a mustang, but you pop in a performance 302 and a built c4 and a few performance upgrades, uou have a fun little car that will scoot. I had got one just like this in 1988 except it was emerald green with a white interior. I drove it stock for a few years before i hopped it up. In addition to the engine and trans, i did a five bolt coversion on the hubs and axles, put a narrowed ford 9 inch in (factory axle WILL break, i kniw from experience) rear lift kit and ladder bars (kept breaking leaf springs from the torque)
Nice! I’m working out my 5 lug swap now
Haven’t seen one of those in a bit. My dad used to have a pro street style 74.
They used to be popular hornet style race cars out at state line. Might be time for you to build a race car. :)
I was hoping to find some hopper up 2.3 on someone’s shop floor
Those 2.3L Pinto engines are valuable !! The Europeans love them , you could easily make enough money from that motor to do a V8 swap.
Hopefully it’s just a good runner
@@thedirtheadshed Right on, have fun w/ the car ! But when you want more power.....😁
I owned 7 Mustang IIs in the 80s and early 90s, they were throw away cars I got free at the junk yards I worked at
Still are!
I love it! Let me know if you ever want to get rid of it. It would be a fun little car.
We will see if it’s a keeper
I love it. I had a blue one too, and it was also a Ghia
Nice.
I had a 76 Mach 1 , I put a built 289 in it and Cobra trim , it ripped! I called it my pinto LX ! lol.
I’m sure it was fast
Maybe it is because I am younger than the Mustang II, but I never understood the dismissal/hate they get. They look cool; everyone loves a 2.3; affordable fun as rolling potential.
I agree.. they were on the forefront of the gas crunch. That was a bad time for car enthusiasts. It was change that most people did not want
Calling it a Pinto is like calling the '65 Mustang a Falcon. I had a '76 and loved it, wish I still had it.
You’re right about that
I'm not gunna lie, I was kinda hoping your new project would be putting 37's on that blue VW beetle truck thing.
That would be sweet. But I need a quick gratification cruiser
Why Dave.... Can't wait to see what you do with it
Hopefully it comes together
Am I the only one that saw the black Chevelle two cars over lol
2.3L Ford SOHC for the win got basically the same engine in my 1988 Ford Ranger even has the same carb. Most reliable vehicle I probably own. Built mine for car shows and for a weekend cruiser
Nice. I look forward to getting this one running right
