    Oh boy! This is so exciting to watch! I love the old Honda XL/XR big bore bikes. My first dirt bike was a 1984 XR500R, it was just beautiful. Rode it hard for 12 years with very few issues. These are not hard to start once running right -- the dual carbs can be fiddly, and watch the fuel crossover pipe for leaks. Also be sure to use a fuel filter between tank and carbs. It's a good idea to replace the carb bowl screws with hex head screws.
    Only downside to these bikes is being very heavy, but you get used to it with some seat time. Keep the great videos coming 👍

    I rode one of these for years - one of the easiest bikes to start I ever owned that didn't have a pushbutton - IF you used the SYSTEM. When cold, kick it through 5 or 6 times with the choke on and the decompression lever pulled. Then, slowly push the kick lever until you feel the compression. Now, pull the decompressor and ease it over the top just past compression. Now kick with a will. Oh, and trash the sutomatic decompressor.

      Dave, how would you recommend for when it's hot?
      I'm about to rebuild my carb again as the front plate is cracked, the bike starts easy when cold and if I immediately start it after it shuts down warm. But if I wait 3 minutes,or more I can't get it to start unless I bump it.
      I have the decompress from the kickstand also attached and working, but would that make a difference?
      The decompress from the handlebar opens 1 exhaust right? And the one from the kickstand is opening 1 intake? Or how does that work?
      It rides very well, I think it feels so hot all the time, but do you also have recommendations for the jets? What size would you recommend?
      I have a gpr exhaust end so I'm sure it's pretty open exhaust.
      Thank you, if you are inside the xl600 group I am admin for look for me. Torbjorn.

    Those battery tenders show bad battery if the voltage is under 8v on a 12v battery, and they won't try to charge it. You need a 2amp or higher non smart battery charger to kinda jump start the battery. Once it gets past 8v or so a battery tender will do the rest of the charge. Batteries go bad so fast here in az that I deal with this a lot.

    I bought a kmx 125, about 2 years ago at 35 000 km. I fixed it up but haven't really been riding it since I don't have my license yet. It starts great, and runs really great as well. When should I be thinking of rebuilding the top end? I have no history of the bike whatsoever.

    I recently sold a '91 XR250R I got for $200. Might have been too much since it was just a roller with engine in a box. Got it running 4 months later. Got a '93 XR650L now and previous owner put a kickstarter on it. Pretty helpful cuz it kills crappy batteries fairly quickly with it's big bore kit and hotcam.

    I bought one of these brand new in 1986 while on leave from Germany. I always regretted getting rid of it. I traded it for a Suzuki LT500R after keeping it for 1 1/2 years and enjoyed QuadZilla, but the Honda never let me down and was a super comfortable bike even on long rides. I wish that I could get my hands on one in nice shape like the one that you have, but I retired and moved to the Philippines. Nothing lasts here. If it is wood, termites eat it. If it is metal it rusts away in a few years. Great job Joe! Nice find!

    I don't think 14000 miles is "high" mileage, I have an 83 VT500C Shadow with over 33000 km (20505 miles) and it still runs strong and doesn't use or burn a drop of oil. Regular maintenance is the key, use the owners manual for service intervals and maintenance recommendations and your bike should last for a long time.

  • @frederickjeremy
    @frederickjeremy Місяць тому

    Man what a gem. I would love to find a bike in that shape even as it was when you found it for 700$. That is a deal. You can tell by looking at it that it has not had a rough life, just needs to be used. I dont even need another bike, but if i came across a deal like that i wouldnt be able to pass that up. Glad it worked out for you. That machine should have plenty of life left in it. I’ve never dealt with that particular bike, but those old honda’s from that era… all of them, were built to a standard i miss so much these days. As far as the mileage, what i have learned in 40 years of motorcycling/mechanicing, just because most bikes get sold with under 10,000 miles on them doesnt mean there is anything mechanically wrong with one that has “higher” mileage. They work off the same principles as a car, and nobody considers the engine in a car with 20,000 miles to be wore out. It baffles me sometimes. I have a harley davidson fatboy i bought new in 2006 with almost 60,000 miles. Still good as new. I have a 2010 dr650 i bought new with almost 23,000 miles, still good as new. My dad has a 2010 ultraclassic with almost200,000 miles…. The leather is checked, the paint has some chips, but mechanically…. It fires up and goes every time, no smoke, no weird noises or anomalies, no oil leaks or consumption. A little bit of elbow grease and it cleans up nice and could be ridden across the country again i do believe for another 100,000 miles atleast. The most basic of maintenance and enough use to keep everything fresh goes a long ways.

      I had an XR600 of about the same year right through the 90s. Should never have sold that girl. Crashed it and stalled it plenty, but once I knew the right technique I could start it with my hand! Such a mighty machine. I used to ride it up and down looong flights of concrete steps in the city, start off in 3rd gear in deep sand on the beach ... amazing for doing wheelies. A lot of things I'd never attempt on the CRF250 Rally I ride now (and still have a lot of fun). I don''t think I could manhandle the big XR off road any more even if I had it :-(

      @BruceHoult stalled my old yz490 a few times on a hill. Beast to start at the best of times. Need to get your butt high off the seat and give it everything you got to get it fired up. Imagine having to do that up a hill. I just held the clutch in jumped as high as I could and slammed down hard with everything i had. Took a good 5 mins to get it re started. Not easy up a hill. Thankfully I'm 6ft 5.
