2024 GWM Tank 300 Hybrid Review | Is the hybrid version of this Wrangler rival worth an extra $10K?

The GWM Tank 300 surprised everyone with its competency both on- and off-road, thanks to its gutsy four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine and rock-solid 4x4 underpinnings - including multiple locking diffs.
So what do we make of the new hybrid version, which adds a 20 per cent premium to the price tag? Well, it sounds good on paper but the proof’s in the pudding and this dessert really needs a cherry on top to justify that price hike.
It’s still significantly more affordable than its closest rival, the Jeep Wrangler, and also beats the Wrangler 4xe hybrid to market. Join senior editor Feann Torr in putting China’s plucky new petrol-electric 4x4 off-road SUV to the test.

I’m looking to get one in the new year.
Im living in Thailand got a Tank 300 Ultra HEV for under 35K $. The cheapest Jeep Wrangler costs about 100K $. Inside the Tank is more luxury and off-road ist great fun. Like a Jeep it needs more offset at the rims and some bigger MT tires to get an aggressive look and a good mud performance. No annoying driver cam in Thailand and the Nanny easy to shut up after starting the car…
Answer to your gratutitously repetitive question of "Would you buy a Chinese car ?" is in the VFACTS numbers published monthly.
I did buy HEV and I am rapt now that I have all that Nanny stuff turned off. Fuel consumption is very dependant on the driver. Was getting around 12 lt / 100km now doing exactly the same trips it is under 10lt /100km. Heaps of power when you need it.
is that true its battery is empty while you are cruising on highway for a couple of hrs?
Do the rear wheels lift off the ground when braking hard like the non hybrid version does?
Nope - its fast AF... so much fun. Even if you dont want one take it for a spin.
In the two different demo's I drove both had a massive problem with them when accelerating away from a stop while turning (for example turning right at an intersection) and they took off under electric power but halfway through the turn they engaged the petrol engine with a huge shunt that violently surged through the vehicle. It's as though the electric engine was spinning the drivetrain at the equivalent petrol engine speed of about 3000 rpm and then suddenly decided it didn't have enough grunt to continue and tried to engage the petrol engine from 0 to 3000 rpm instantly. Certainly not smooth and could reproduce it on both cars, multiple times.
100% Eaiser to get after market parts for this vehicle
None of these reviews takes a look at actual city, start and stop driving with the hybrid - where it should offer an advantage. It seems that it would deliver much lower operating costs. You don't want a hybrid just for highway or off-road driving.
city start-stop road condition is the real situation that hyrbid saves much fuel.
@@mikehuang1730 Thanks.
Reading the forums, seems the main issues are issue with the car braking and lifting rear wheels, electronic gremlins and intrusive safety features, circa 400kg GVM, some have complained of rubbish blue tooth phone reception, also they seem to spray the vehicles with grease or oil for some reason all through the chassis and engine area, Weird. Solid vehicle through
when this car first came up, I thought this was the ugliest car in the market and a wrangler wannabe...but then after a while, it started getting on me and it is a very competitive price and a better option than the Japanese competitors and it start to look nice too...I am thinking of buying this instead of Pajero sport or Mahindra Scorpio.
well, we are all going to drive a Chinese car soon or later.
No, no we won't.
@@maddogmorgan1 yes you will

Toyota and Isuzu are good enough for me.
