Had my pertol ultra for 6 months now. No complaints from me at all - it is an impressive vehicle IMO for the $. Much of what is mentioned here appears to be directed at the hybrid model. One thing I will probably look at doing is some after market suspension work. The Tank300 has this unusual combination of firm yet soft suspension (which sounds contradictory on the face of it) and no doubt a contributor to any braking issues mentioned. However, there is a stack of choices available now for aftermarket suspension - I'm not particularly interested in lift kits etc, just something a bit more tied down. Btw - I also own a subaru (2023 BRZ) and your point about the indicators being similarly frustrating on first use is valid. With the Tank300 I did get myself into some situations where you are indicating left and then right trying to turn off the indicator manually. Not sure if you know this, because it is somewhat unintuiative, but when you have the full indicator operating and want to turn it off manually a short tap in the SAME direction (not opposite) does the trick..
I tried to push the indicators in the same direction as you've described and maybe I'm doing something wrong but it didn't work for me and is SO unintuitive that I'd rather keep dealing with this shit until my lease is over and I can hand the vehicle back.
I'm always amazed with how well the gear shifter is designed! It's intuitive, and quick to operate. I really don't like dials, as you always need to look at it to understand what you selected. The instrument panel: well, you can select another theme with the analog meters. It will show you your speed in an analog and digital way, as well as your revs. Driver monitoring can be disabled, at least in China. The boot space is small but still bigger than a Wrangler. These cars are designed as off-road cars, not camping cars. For that purpose, there is the Tank 500.
Don't get me started about the other themes. Have you tried those, or are you just a dealer trying to crowd-control an honest list of personal opinions? Those themes are cosmetics. They don't move any elements of the dash around, they decorate them. So don't get me started. Driver monitoring is mandatory for most cars manufactured after a certain year. Knowing GWM and their stupid ELK I very much doubt you can disable anything permanently (other than the annoying voice, which I do believe they can turn off).
@@ValueCarsAU No. Just a guy living in China having a Tank 300. I can't speak for the model you have, but in China there are themes that give you a real different look. Mine has two dials, left one for revs, right one for speed. Also, the speed is digitally shown in the center. Voice etc. can be turned off, blinkers are working normally like all other cars. I honestly like the Lane Keeping System, but I know what you mean, it's quite firm! But I do have a Nissan Altima 2023 as well with ELK, but it seriously drifts over the line, and just turns off ELK! The one from GWM might be firm but at least it keeps the car between the lines haha :)
Hybrid ultra has wireless CarPlay, DAB+ radio, seat & mirror memory, built in maps, permanent 4WD rear + front and centre diff locks, all 4 windows auto up & down, child monitor, front cross traffic alert, highway assist, reverse assist (auto reverse last 50 meters) , parking assist, auto parking, 6 parking sensors front & rear, and 30% better power to weight ratio with launch control and at least 1-2L per 100 better depending on driving style. That is a lot of extra kit, and definitely worth the extra for me personally, it just depends whether a person values all of it or not. If you don’t have it, you probably won’t miss it, but when you do have it, you enjoy all those extras. Yea the mother in law is a pain in the ass for sure lol. I just disable it
Good to know, thanks for sharing, but you do sound like a dealer. I don't blame you trying to defend the product, as you know - I'm a fan of Tank 300. But Ultra Hybrid is still quite expensive. But hey, a lot of people buy expensive toys. This is one of them.
@@ValueCarsAU no dealer, proud owner and thought the hybrid was to much money (just for hybrid) but the found out all the extras it had and it made more sense. Only reason I called them out is no one really knows all the additional extras you get and GWM do a poor job of informing the dealers they were useless. Love your work though especially all the early info before they came out here 👍🏻
I've had the Tank 300 petrol ultra for a year now, It's one of the best cars I've ever driven. In fact Pual was instrumental in my descision to purchase the Tank. The downside is the fuel consumption and the ELK keeps turning on everytime I get into the car (which I understand is a feautre in all new cars). The indicator stock can be annoying at first but you get a feel for it after while. With regards to quality my right rear tyre pressure keeps decreasing slightly faster than the other tyres. Not sure if it's a GWM thing or a tyre thing, haven't had time tot get it checked out as I live in remote WA. Early on I had some rocks lodged from trucks crack the top surface of my windshiled. Had it replaced with RAC. As for everything else it's been perfect. I've done over 15K and most of it is long distance on crappy country roads with some city driving and beach dune off roading. It's extremely smooth, extremely comfortable and enjoy getting in everytime. It's my meditation machine. Happy with my purchase so far. Will update this comment in another year.
I own the Ultra Hybrid and love it. All new cars these days come with more and more electronic safety features and they are required to get 5 star NCAP rating. So the sooner we learn to accept an live with them the better.
I understand that those features are pushed on us by the governments and companies that want to fit into a foreign market, but there's such thing as customer push-back and feedback mate. We need to gather and provide it, rather than just bend over and take it as you seem to be suggesting we do.
That's why I bought a Jimny. It doesn't yet come with any of that rubbish. All these assists only help subpar drivers who have no business being on the road. Driver assists do not have intelligence or sound judgement. Four-wheel drive vehicles in particular suffer from electronic bottle necks as they negatively impact offroad performance. In fact, there are military versions of civilian models which are stripped of these assists in order to maximize reliability in extreme environments. That goes to show they're largely useless nanny state ideas implemented by people who have no understanding of anything that goes on outside their high-rise city apartments.

Fair points, there are after market rear door wheel arch cover for outdoor enthusiasts. I prefer the petrol engine over the diesel as my Cannon X's diesel engine is rather slow to respond to the pedal action. My wife's Tank 300 is much quieter and smoother on the road. The indicator stalk is better in the Cannon X. As to the Tank's back wheels lifting under heavy braking, it may be a concern for some enthusiastic drivers going round the corner, but in normal daily drive, it's fine as the stopping distance is acceptable for a heavy vehicle. People may say why drive the Tank 300 in town? The same can be said why buy SUVs when station wagons are just as good. Guess it's the trend of motoring, fashion over function. One of the reasons that we bought GWM is the long warranty and fixed price services so that we can budget our expenses, unlike our previous Audi and Commodore SSV, after the warranty period each service was always a surprise in the negative way. Not too worry about the brand name as long as the vehicle serves its purpose. Thank you for your channel.
All good points and I share all of them, except I don't own a Tank or a Cannon for that matter. Yes I agree, solid vehicles, not worse than many MANY more established badge brands, but suffer from ignorance of bogans and depreciation. If you buy to keep these for a long time, it's totally worth it.

It's actually a valid question mate. I like tank 500 but I'm not in love with it. Yes it suits my style more so than Subaru but from the value standpoint it won't do that much better for my uses while I'd have to pay about $16 more fit it. Almost a price of a brand new second car I could get for my daughter. So all in all, probably not. Shoutout to you for a good question in the next video where I'll talk about it
I have just put in my deposit on one and will get it end of this month, you video kinda ressured me about getting it to be honest! The fact that you were seriously considering the car made me realize that you will be honest in your criticism. Here in the middle east we get a totally different models setup, I have tested one here and came out really impressed every single time. Sorry for the long comment, I love what you do btw and keep up the good work with your videos 🙏
It definitely isn't made for high speed, I agree with you mate, and the car is nice. It's just getting unexplainably too expensive in HEV Ultra version, in my view. As a base Petrol for ~47k it's a nice off-roader.
The drive away prices for the 2 hybrid models aren't expensive to me TBH. Both none-hybrid Kia sportage and Tucson are more expensive. To me, Tank 300 has nicer interior, and is much more powerful and capable of doing offroad. So it's kind hard to say they are expensive. I think maybe you've made your point based on it's a Chinease brand. And then how much the new Prado is asking then? And how much power the new Prado has? I agree with most of the pionts in this video. But I think the pricing for Tank 300 is a plus than a minus to me.
I guess one could make an argument that the much lower price (for a HEV) makes up for the rest of the stupid things and design shortfalls, but Ultra HEV is still too expensive for what it is.
You missed the dumbest thing about the 300: A payload of less than 400kg across the board. 4 adult Aussies and you're over, without luggage, towing, roof racks, etc.
I've spoken about the load and towing etc at length as I was reviewing T300 over the past few months. It was not the top of my "dumbest things" list... 🤷♀️😉
My family checked out the Tank 300 about a month ago as looked like we needed a new family car. It took 2 minutes. As soon as the boys got in the rear seats it was over - a lack of headroom as were touching the roof (5ft10in thereabouts). Tank 500 a much better choice for the family, but out of our price range. Only found your channel a month ago as was looking for 'real' reviews on the various Chinese brands in Australia when started considering them as a new family car. Enjoying your reviews Dimitri.
Got petrol model for myself here in UAE. Its a good vehicle but only face two issues: 1. The rear door should have a full fender as the tyre is exposed which makes kids and passengers dress dirty while entering and exiting the car. 2. This needs a more powerful engine like V6 to get power to weight ratio and fuel average improved as 4 cylinder is not enough which makes it a gas guzzler.
I thought diesel is branded dirty energy why Australia still prefers diesel? Reason why I might get Tank 300 is because it's the only SUV that offers benzene engine in my country (not Australia). My family is quite conservative and would go with any good Japanese like Nissan (the current SUV we have is benzene and quite old which means it was built to last, no issue, no sweat, very reliable) but unfortunately, Nissan Terra with benzene is not offered. I'm sad. Anyway, I agree with the annoying indicator lever and that could be a deal breaker along with how the back door is opened (need more space to open, etc.) Thanks for the review.
The indicators are my number 1 dumbest thing on it. Followed by way too much going on on the dash followed by very poor AM reception. I still like it. Perfect little beach car and camping for 2.
I have to disagree with some of your points. First, the hybrid... It's not meant to improve fuel economy, it's designed to support and boost the petrol motor. It's very effective at that. Its motor (hybrid or ICE) is also very easy to tune to get alot more power without over stressing the motor. The Euro 7 compliance equivalent is killing ICE engines. The boot space is fine for the size of the vehicle. Sure the back seats could have been located further forward, but it's not terrible. There are significant increases in the Ultra over the Lux which easily justifies the step up in process. Plus I think the price points are fine. I agree with the driver assistance tech tuning. It's crap and annoying, but it is necessary for 5 star ratung, so blame the government and ANCAP not GWM. One thing you missed is the tailgate limits for spare wheel. It cannot handle larger wheels at all. No warranty for issues caused. The sound system isn't as good as it looks on paper.
When people are happy if their vehicle gets to 13K mileage without issues, it is an indication that there is little expectation in respect to reliability. Enjoy your reviews.
@@ValueCarsAU How does that make someone a badge snob? 13k is nothing not impressive at all. Anyone with a quality car should expect at least 100-150k trouble free
@@ValueCarsAU this is the first time I have seen one of your videos, you seem to be very combative with your viewers in the comments. I would have thought you'd want to encourage discussion rather than shut down everyone that has a different opinion to you. Seems odd.
I honestly wanted to review it for over a year now and just didn't find the time and priority to do it. Just need to find me a Suzuki dealership and go have a chat with them... 😉
I understand due to Aust emission regulations, there are certain engines don’t meet Aust emission standard, hence you don’t see them in Aust. I would guess same to V6 engine under Tank.
Yep Aus emission regulations, tax deduction brackets for EV and HEV, so GWM makes a choice to fit into that more popular renewable energy discount scheme that obviously saves them millions on a global scale.
We go a Tank 300 about 1 month ago love it, great car comfortable drives well It has all the mod cons. We have the Utra Turbo Petrol and I agree the HEV isn't worth the increase in price.
Mentioning all design features, good or bad, poor breaking, but hey… two videos into GWM at all and I read a comment that this tank thing is rusting from new underneath all over! So parking it anywhere on the coast in Australia, where misty salty air covers vehicles by the minute, they wont last long. You don’t even have to use them in 4x4. Do not buy GWM! they rust through before you even had some kms on them!!!!
Very random and unsubstantiated comment. Not sure what are you reading and where, as literally a ton of various sources are pointing out quite the opposite, even in Russia where they have winters etc. So go spew disinformation somewhere else. Not deleting your comment or banning you only because your comment isn't offensive, just badly informed.
Yeah several people pointed that out. I still think it's a poor substitute and no-alternative to Diesel (for those who choose to rely on that off-road torque or use it in whoop-whoop-nowhere).
Fascinating review, thank you. The damn thing that Russia models have only 4x4 part-time and TOD versions (same petrol engine) and specifications don’t have a versions of the car with a front seats/mirror memory, wireless charging, wireless CarPlay, auto-dimming rear view mirror..that’s sucks)) also, a “high” part-time version doesn’t have auto window glasses except only driver one) so, lucky you guys) but still a good choice for a long asphalt trips as well as off-road dacha journeys 😅
Great insights mate thank you. I'm pretty sure ProDrive was showing 4x4 full-time (not just part-time version) but I could be wrong. The problem is - a lot of people bought part time when the first batch of T300 released in Russia, only to then see a full-time being available but they've already spent their money, which is a massive shame of course.
Would have been OK without all the self promotion and the sensationalism of the video title almost put me off watching it. You're not happy about no diesel, here in NZ that's an advantage as road user charges are penalising for diesel. Hybrid is not just about fuel savings, the hybrid generates about 100hp more (342 vs 217) with hopefully a smoother power delivery (but is an expensive option). $$$ versus competitors, can't be beaten no matter how much you put it down.
Search my channel for Mahindra, you'll get your answer. It's presence in Australia is too tiny to seriously consider it as a city vehicle. Plus, it might be cheaper but it's not cheap enough to throw caution to the wind.
Man, everyone is entitled to an opinion. I respect the one you gave in your review, but I beg to differ on so many points that makes your review lacking professionalism and oozing of bias: - Not being suitable for families isn't a valid argument since not all Tank users buy this car as a family car. The sole purpose of this car is off-road, not driving kids to Disneyland.. - Yeah, obviously it will be a No Diesel car since we're in 2024 and Diesel is starting to become a thing of the past. I do not understand how you should consider this as an argument against GWM. Running a car review UA-cam channel and mentioning Diesel while ignoring emission regulation is amateurism as its finest. - The consumption argument is faulty. While we can agree on the fact that the consumption levels are quite excessive for a SUV with this size, I can confirm you that the HEV version consume slightly less than the petrol counterpart: 8.4 combined vs. 9.5 for the ICE. In reality, verified test drivers found the following numbers: 9.6L for HEV combined vs. 10.4 for ICE. So if you just go full pedal on the gas and expect good numbers... Also, an HEV car is meant to be driven gently in order to get maximum benefits from its EV powertrain. The point you're trying to make is unclear. - The pricing strategy chosen by GWM Australia in regards of pricing of full spec Tank 300 HEV closely to entry Tank 500 is very stupid.. Rest assured, it's locally decided and not a global strategy of the brand. Usually, pricing between these models are very distant from one another. Margin greed maybe in AUS? Who knows. - Finally one point I can agree with you and is worthy of criticizing since it's very bad for the reputation of this car: the brakes issue. This is bad very bad. And dangerous. The boxy shape of the car, along with its weight is a key factor that damages the braking, so that's one critical issue GWM engineers need to work on at this price point. - Another subjective personal opinion thrown in here in regards of the gear shifter: it is related to personal preferences. I personnally love it and I find its style quite refreshing compared to all the e-shift by wire knobs and buttons. Clear +1 for me. - First time I see a UA-camr complain about a lil bit of technology and wide HD clusters and screens in a car. The information system is on point and a huge upgrade compared to Haval models, premiumness is felt inside and screens are user friendly man, stop hating just for the hate. You comparing it to the regular cluster that feels outdated while you recommend getting back to it proves that you don't like technology updates in cars maybe or screens feels complicated to use for you. - Come on dude, you can easily desactivate all beeps and stuff from your cluster. Your review lacks of credibility when you list this as annoying when everybody knows you can mute all beeps and sound indicator in a car.. That was just my 2 cents as well. You hated so much on this car for all the wrong reasons mate, I agree it's not a perfect car with some bad sides, but it didn't deserve the backlash as it's still a great car nonetheless.
Actually your review makes me decide to buy Tank 300 2025, thx 🤣

Thank you for sharing your experience and welcome to our little club
Two of my kids are over 6ft and I am 6ft5 and can fit in the back with headrooms. Did you sit in the right car?
@@lozlinna I'm 6'1" and had loads of headroom in the back and front. Did you sit in a Jimny??
Got petrol model for myself here in UAE. Its a good vehicle but only face two issues:
Good points mate, thank you for adding to the list
There’s a Tank 330 model with a 3.0 V6 engine in China, don’t know about other markets
Enjoy your reasonably well concealed badge snob opposition, carry on
@@ValueCarsAU How does that make someone a badge snob? 13k is nothing not impressive at all. Anyone with a quality car should expect at least 100-150k trouble free
@@ValueCarsAU this is the first time I have seen one of your videos, you seem to be very combative with your viewers in the comments. I would have thought you'd want to encourage discussion rather than shut down everyone that has a different opinion to you. Seems odd.
what is you think about or review Suzuki jimmy?
I honestly wanted to review it for over a year now and just didn't find the time and priority to do it. Just need to find me a Suzuki dealership and go have a chat with them... 😉
The only issues they have in comparison to the Tank 300 is boot space and a small engine. In every other way they are a far superior vehicle.
I'm sure you'll love it if it fits your purpose and you're ok with any other things that I've mentioned here 🤷♀️
Mentioning all design features, good or bad, poor breaking, but hey… two videos into GWM at all and I read a comment that this tank thing is rusting from new underneath all over!
I think the HEV is about off-road torque from low RPM
Yeah several people pointed that out. I still think it's a poor substitute and no-alternative to Diesel (for those who choose to rely on that off-road torque or use it in whoop-whoop-nowhere).
i cant agree more on the No.1 reason. but there are a lot of talk about make it & i hope that's true
There's more good than bad about T300. I just wouldn't buy HEV.
The lack of a diesel engine is the deal breaker.
For some petrol is enough - e.g. my Wrangler was petrol - but if you want to tow and drive in the red centre of AU, I agree
@@dune7824 Diesel option will be available early 2025
@@garylab7934 Thanks mate, yeah it's exciting news. I'll be giving this one a good look over once it arrives.
I do agree with Tank 300 without diesel capability and the limited of boot space.
It's a fun toy. That's what it is.
Hey IwI'm looking to buy a car what would be your top 5 cars to buy
I might do a different list once I have a chance to look at what's on the market right now.
"Self-promotion and sensationalism"? Really? Bye mate, no interest in taking your comment seriously.
Lack of cargo room ruled the Tank 300 out for me.
Agree mate, it's very limiting
Have you tested the Mahindra Scorpio N? Diesel, cheaper
Search my channel for Mahindra, you'll get your answer. It's presence in Australia is too tiny to seriously consider it as a city vehicle. Plus, it might be cheaper but it's not cheap enough to throw caution to the wind.
Tank 300 Verry good ❤👍👍👍
No doubt
Are they really drink fuel alot?
Apparently (comparatively to other HEV and PHEV)
Man, everyone is entitled to an opinion. I respect the one you gave in your review, but I beg to differ on so many points that makes your review lacking professionalism and oozing of bias:
- Not being suitable for families isn't a valid argument since not all Tank users buy this car as a family car.
I'm glad we agree on everyone being allowed an opinion, as long as it's friendly and educated. Appreciate you sharing yours.
Does anyone know if 2024 Chery Tiggo 4 is worth a buy compared to the Nissan Magnite or Suzuki Fronx?
I'd comment but we don't have those Nissan and Suzuki models here in AU
@@ValueCarsAU no problem, thank you for this reply🤙🏼
The front looks like a Lada Niva
Yes it does and I don't mind it, actually.
For breaking system, its worth to say that it's stupid thing " if that's is true " , but your other reasons....meh .
Well, here's the best news mate - you don't have to agree with me! 🤷♀️🤣
This is just a toy! But good toy
Fair enough mate, it is a toy for sure.
really poor engine choices.
I don't disagree
