I have a Chinese friend who works at a Toyota 4S store in Guangdong Province. He told me that the business situation this year is very bad. In addition to the economic environment, the main reason is the invasion of off-road vehicles produced in China. He said that because the number of Chinese people on vacation is actually increasing, the demand for off-road vehicles is actually rising in China, especially going to places like Tibet and Xinjiang. It is very difficult without off-road vehicles, but Japanese off-road vehicles are the most popular off-road vehicles in China. The market as a whole declined. He did not say which specific Chinese off-road vehicle hit the Japanese off-road vehicle market, but he said that it was not just vehicles like the Tank 300, but also many Chinese off-road vehicles, such as the Beijing BJ40, and even electric off-road vehicles.
"Lane Keep Assist" is mean to pull the car back into the lane under certain cases, not mean to keep the car in the center of the lane. And driver can use voice command to activate lots of functions, like cooled/heated seat, window/sunroof.
Would like to see Tank 300 and 500 over here in India. One, Indians tend to be very VFM oriented. So if these vehicles are worth and have a business case for ownership, its good for customers. Second, perhaps the Indian auto manufacturers will feel challenged and step up their game furthermore.
India repels China too much. If India has a stable relationship with China, EV cars can work together on fuel cars monopolized by the United States, Germany and Japan. After all, a developing country should not fall into the US trap and wait for the United States to withdraw from India without the demographic dividend. This is an American propaganda trap worthy of vigilance.
1/ very soon, Chinese vehicles will crush the competition. they are simply 'more bang for the buck'. across the board, my only con for Chinese vehicles are the seats: too small for taller drivers, and need better lumbar for driver and passenger. everything else is good to go. 2/ also, soon Chinese caravans will crush the competition.
Hello Liam, My understanding is that Payload is Gross Vehicle Mass minus Kerb Weight. With the Tank 300, GVM 2,552 kg minus KW 2,155 kg equals Payload 397 kg (as per review). Parado Kakadu GVM 2,990 Kg minus KW 2,290 equals Payload 700 kg. Cheers.
@@LiamTerry From Toyota Aust' website regard payload; "...Payload: is the difference between 'GVM' of the vehicle and its 'Kerb Mass'....". "...Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM): is the total permissible combined weight of the vehicle, including occupants, fuel and cargo...". "...Kerb Mass (or Kerb Weight): is the mass of the vehicle in running order unoccupied and unladen with all fluid reservoirs filled to nominal capacity, including fuel and with all standard equipment...". From car sales; "...That maximum permitted weight is called Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM). If you subtract the kerb mass of the vehicle from GVM, you have what is called payload...". Cheers. :)
@@nicholasmatthews5989 So when I said, GWM show their weights differently in my comment, you thought quoted a Toyota website would be the best way to show me I'm wrong or right? If you simply google search "Tank 300 Payload" it will provide you the answer that you seek.
@@LiamTerry However that also assumes you are going to drive everywhere with 10L of fuel (which is what is in the tare weight). So, sure, you can carry 446 kg in a Tank 300, assuming you stop for fuel every 100 km or so. If you have a full tank of fuel in the Tank then you can only carry 397 kg; the difference between the two being the 49 kg that 65 L of fuel weighs to take it to 75L of fuel.

Watching from the USA. The Prado Kakadu looks like the “Love Child” of a Toyota 4Runner Limited and Lexus GX👀!! All of which are made in the same factory in Japan. 397kg is correct, which is ridiculously low. Based on the specifications of the Tank 300 on the GWM Aust' website, the Gross Vehicle Mass is 2,552 kg and the Kerb Weight is 2,155 kg. Thereby, it would not take much to overload the vehicle. :(
@@siraff4461 Wow, it is quite easy to go over the payload with the Tank 300. Imagine if you and your mates were to go on a long trip in a Tank 300, the weight over would even be far greater. The Tank 300 is not made for travelling with a load of adults, which is disappointing for something called a tank. Today I was reading about the light Mazda 2 hatch, and just out of interest I checked it's payload. For the auto the GVM is 1,543kg and Kerb weight is 1,109kg, thereby it's payload is 434kg. I think this is the vehicle that would play a crucial role in altering the common perception of the Chinese automotive prowess. it's interesting reading the comments & seeing all the dislike towards Chinese vehicles. Last month in China (the biggest car market in the world) GWM sold 31,972 vehicles. Toyota sold 4,777 & has slumped from being the number 1 brand in China to number 27th in only 2 years. Times are changing, Honda sold 1,176, Nissan 2,738, Ford only 175! Your Toyota that you think will last 25 years, the company itself may not even be around then as it is the most indebted country in the world & traditionally, 1/2 their income came from China, now it's gone! Mitsubishi & Jeep has gone bankrupt in China, other Japanese, USA & European manufacturers to follow.

For me, you can’t compare that brand, an unknown brand or not tested brand to a tested and reliable Toyota Land Cruiser. Not just because it’s cheaper. That’s why Land Cruisers are not cheap because we all know it, that why it still exist today.

Actually the tank has both systems and they are separate. Love the idea of the Tank and looks so bloody capable offroad, but the GVM is way too low and makes it an unrealistic option for families who intend to use the vehicle to go camping/touring. Also, I doubt we will see the 500 anytime soon, because it would make the 300 obsolete.

Thanks for the great review. I'm interested to see how the Hybrid Tank 300 stacks up & also the next generation of the Tank 300 if GWM continues with this production 👍👍
Definitely impressed with the GWM, I would happily buy one over the Prado and spend the extra $50k elsewhere (2nd hand caravan or boat).
I'm sure the next generation of Prado will be great, but I doubt Toyota will sell it as the same price as the outgoing model, meaning that it's going to be even more expensive.
Plus the waiting period.
Tank 500 will be real competitor of Parado
arguably, tank 300 could be the car of the year if people are fair dinkum.
tbh, japan is not the old Japan and China is not the old china.
Never saw a tank before. But was in a GWM dealership looking around last week. Tank looks a lot like the new ford bronco.
Isn't the Fortuner a more relevant comparison?
should compare tank 500 with prado, or even tank 400 with 700 N torque, well they only cost 30,000 dollars in China
GWM Tank 300 is a decent offroad SUV. Toyota Prado is nice but mostly half of the price goes to badge frankly speaking
There’s a reason after all this time, Prado was still in the top 10 last month for sales numbers.
true, but in australia only
Yup. Plenty of mugs in Oz mate.
It’s pretty safe to say that if any 4wd enthusiast or tourer could choose any car they wanted , they’d pick a 300 series or Prado. So really it’s a money thing with all the Toyota haters.
A comparison with the Prado gxl would have made more sense.
GXL won't stand a chance except the internal space......

Really glad you made a point of the poor payload of the Tank (less than 400Kg). Maybe OK for a city 4WD, but hopeless if you wanted to use it for remote travel. And towing anything is effectively out of the question.
It's literally Jimny levels of payload in a car designed for 1 more passenger and 1.4 m longer.
I believe that, it's happening here, Japanese manufacturers better wake up there's invasion coming from China 😂😅😊😮 it's great TOYs are way overpriced

Payload is also incorrect- it’s 446kg as per Redbook. GWM show their weights differently.
Hello Liam, My understanding is that Payload is Gross Vehicle Mass minus Kerb Weight. With the Tank 300, GVM 2,552 kg minus KW 2,155 kg equals Payload 397 kg (as per review). Parado Kakadu GVM 2,990 Kg minus KW 2,290 equals Payload 700 kg. Cheers.
@@nicholasmatthews5989 payload is calculated from Tare Weight, not Kerb weight.
@@LiamTerry
From Toyota Aust' website regard payload; "...Payload: is the difference between 'GVM' of the vehicle and its 'Kerb Mass'....".

Five years? What happened? It sounds like you are very pessimistic about your future.
The only advantage of buying a Prado is its status. But thanks a very objective review of the Prado and the Tank, I think. Though I havent even seen a Tank, it looks a worthy competitor, the only thing may be the lack of boot space.

397kg payload for the tank has surely got to be a mistake. That's absurdly low.
It is built like a tank but Is governed by Chinese Law so the CGM is gross understated even though the Tank has a full ladder frame chassis that is insane.
@@nicholasmatthews5989 Me and three mates from the gym would put it over. By more than 100kg.
@@siraff4461 Wow, it is quite easy to go over the payload with the Tank 300. Imagine if you and your mates were to go on a long trip in a Tank 300, the weight over would even be far greater. Today I was reading about the light Mazda 2 hatch, and just out of interest I checked it's payload. For the auto the GVM is 1,543kg and Kerb weight is 1,109kg, thereby it's payload is 434kg. So, funnily a light hatch has a greater payload, very embarrassing for the Tank 300. :)

Comparing a Chinese car half price of Japanese Car is not fair. Try to compare the same price model , such as Tank 500 vs Prado and see what is the difference.
Something you missed out on is that Chinese-made vehicles will not outlast Toyota in reliability, superior engineering, and resale value. I know my 2022 SR5 will last 20-plus years. Let's see if the tank will last 20 years. Don't get me wrong Chinese-made vehicles have come a long way and over the years they will just keep improving.
I think this is the vehicle that would play a crucial role in altering the common perception of the Chinese automotive prowess. This is a disruptor of a vehicle and if GWM will sort out a few things and bring their A game in the after sales support department, this vehicle would really upset the apple cart in a big way.

You can tell Toyota dealerships and dealers commenting here, are you sure your not a Jap car dealer trolling, jealous Chinese vehicles starting to dominate the sales charts 😮😅😂😊
it's interesting reading the comments & seeing all the dislike towards Chinese vehicles.

The crawl control in the prado is not the same as hill descent control in the tank. Prado has its own HDC
The Tank does both with one button apparently, same button for descent & ascent. Then just set the speed for either, it will make it happen for you.

@ianweal3081 it's similar but different.
I'm not saying it's shit but the crawl control in the prado is different to the HDC style drive modes. The tank is ok, its a bit rough and unrefined in a few ways but for 50k it will do well down the tracks.
Actually the tank has both systems and they are separate.
