The way I see it is, Luffy isn't a chosen one with god powers, he's like Kaido and the koi fish story. The koi fish was just a fish, and he became a dragon through his own efforts and determination while all the other fishes failed and gave up. Many people have had the same fruit over 800 years, but Luffy is the only one who reached the top of the proverbial waterfall.
Kaido was never a fish.... Neither was Marco a bird... How does this even relate to Luffy beeing a paramecia Type ?
We don’t know if he’s the only one who’s reached this high. I’m sure someone else has reached this high if the WG knows about this DF

@@Ok-ws4ce I mean we kinda do... if anyone else had awakened the fruit in the 800 years they would essentially be the next joy boy. And probably would have done away with the WG. Because Luffy is the return of Joy Boy we can assume he is the first person since to have unlocked the power.
I like to think that with the gears luffy almost "forced" the awakening with the downside of extremely taxing his stamina.
Every gear shows "glimpses" of Nika. Maybe he was never supposed to have gear 2,3 and 4 but instead either figure out the awakening or not at all 😅
In my version, this nika fruit true ability is turn everyting into rubber base concept thing including his body itself.
I don't know why people are being so deterministic about how strong Luffy's fruit is. We know fruits are only as powerful as their user.
Orochi has a god tier fruit but what does he do with it? Survive getting decapitated, maybe intimidate some people, that's about it.
Foxy also has an extremely useful fruit yet he just uses it to cheat in Davy Back Fights.
Now look at Luffy, who has only used his elasticity up to this point, rising far above anything Orochi or Foxy could ever aspire to. Luffy's not Luffy because he's the chosen one; Luffy's the chosen one because he's Luffy.
Honestly, the Orochi fruit is such a waste on Orochi...

Big facts man. Literally nothing in the story has changed. Everything Luffy's fought for and struggled with. All the times he looked to be down and out and got back up anyway. None of that has changed or been cheapened in anyway. Give anyone else that devil fruit and they probably do nothing with it. At least nothing to the level of Luffy. There's a reason the fruit chose him. Now that we know zoans have a will of their own I think it makes perfect sense that Shanks brought the fruit to bar and even left it unattended. If it's really been evading the world government for over 800 years it's perfectly believable that the fruit can alter the actions and thought process' of those around it. If that weren't the case I'm sure they would've gotten it fairly easily by now. In a way Luffy was the chosen one but not from some ancient prophecy. The fruit just happened to pick him because of who he is and what he stands for. I absolutely Love this plot development and think most of the community will too eventually. Idk how long it'll take for Oda to go deeper in explaining the fruit but i Still %100 confidence in him as a story teller.

I really don't want this fruit to have affected his friendships even though the chapter literally said it did. Are you sure everything Luffy fought for was Luffy's own will?

The zoan fruits having a will of their own makes sense, because otherwise the objects eating devil fruits would be unable to transform without a will.
Which explains how the hell a item can eat a zoan devil fruit, and nothing else, since the other two are adapted by your own will which is why those other powers can be molded so much.

True. I think that mythical zoans have an even stronger will, allowing them to choose their owners, potentially. Thats why I think the Nika fruit evaded the WG and chose Luffy.
@@joshshrum2764 I'm betting an item could "eat" a logia or paramecia, it just wouldn't gain a life of it's own. It would be more like an enchanted weapon. Like a weapon made of fire. Which might work out if you could touch it, or be entirely useless if you couldn't. And that might be why it just isn't done.

Counterpoint to the "this takes away from Luffy having had to train with a weak fruit" argument.
How "strong" a Devil Fruit is can be considered on two different levels. First there's the minimum function of it that anyone's going to be able to use if they eat it. And then there's the maximum potential of it that can only be achieved by the right person, having the kind of imagination that fits the fruit and training with it extensively.
On the first category, Luffy's fruit is _still_ relatively weak. By default, it just makes you stretchy and resistant to blunt force and lightning. Nothing has changed on that front.
On the second category, Luffy's fruit was _already_ relatively strong. Yeah sure it took him a lot of training to get there, but Luffy _has_ managed to do some incredible things with his fruit. If the fruit wasn't strong in terms of maximum potential, Luffy would never have been able to pull off stuff like the Gears in the first place.
This reveal didn't really change anything about the fruit having a low floor and a high ceiling. The ceiling may have gone up a bit, but it was already shown to be decently high, and the floor didn't get raised at all.
My headcanon is that when Luffy ate the fruit he did learn the 'true name' but then Shanks told him it was called the Gomu Gomu no Mi, so he just forgot the other name. Mostly because I can totally see Luffy forgetting something that important and just going with what Shanks said.
As far as them capturing Luffy you have to remember that after his stunt on Marine Ford he disappeared for two years, he popup up in Sabaoti for a day, Saved fishman Island (no marines) stopped off on Punk Hazard with no "official" marine presence. Then he went to Dressrosa where Fugitora let him go, then Zunisha (no marine), then to Big Moms, then to Wano - Except for the few days on Dressrosa there was no good time to even attempt to capture him and doing it on Dressrosa likely would have caused a revolt. They probably thought they had more time. I mean from the Governments perspective he went straight from Sabaoti to a fight with a Mingo, then to frelling Big Mom AND THEN on to Kaido. What kind of LUNATIC would expect that series of events to even be attempted much less successful.

Not to mention, Luffy is just one of many equally dangerous powers active in the world... Yeah, joy boy is dangerous, but literally also just dying old Whitebeards crew alone took the entire might of the navy to quell...
Luffy is a big deal, but hes one among many evils - the government is always opening themselves when they make a move... and wisely, they made a move with the pacifistas on the warlords while 2-3 yonko powers are fucking around in Wano, and Shanks seems to be potentially cooperative at the moment, so Its smart.
The balance of power is such a big deal.

The hito-hito no mi model Nika is the embodiment of freedom and liberation. It is fitting that Luffy had to work hard and endure to awaken it. Freedom doesn't come cheap.

@@LupineShadowOmega Yes, he knew full well he would face many trials and tribulations along the way but he and his crew have faced them. Now they are facing the most powerful pirates in the world and by the end of Wano they will likely be closer to finding Raftel than any individual since Roger himself. Luffy believes that the title of the King of Pirates will give him pretty much unlimited freedom to do as he wants and it probably will help with that. Now he is a legitimate contender for the title beyond all doubt.
An important point to think about: Kuma was specifically sent to Thriller Bark to take Luffy's head direct orders from the Gorosei. But with Kuma's ties to the revolutionary army and loyalty to Dragon he decided to test Zoro's dedication to his Captain and thereafter let Luffy go. AND right after was scolded by Senegoku (due to the Gorosei being upset of his mission failing) and Garp laughing about it *also probably privy to the information of Luffy's devil fruit*. Not to mention after that Kuma was heavily punished for his failure and turned into Pacifistas. There's a lot to look back on in the story with the knowledge that Luffy actually had this devil fruit.
Could also be why Garp sent Luffy to Dadan, as to not risk Luffys fruit getting discovered by the WG before he is old enough to fend for himself.
@Valfredo Santos Júnior That's a good point. I thought though that he was sent there to also verify Luffy's defeat by the hands of Moria and to take his head incase Moria were to lose. Like how the CP0 was sent in Wano but with Kaido. And in more than likey in both cases Luffy ends up winning
even the gorosi said “this is nothing but a legend even to us” this shows that they weren’t sure maybe only imu knows for sure and when he tells them they changed from robin to luffy
Oda did explicitly state at one point that Vegapunk's role in the story is to clear up the mysteries around Devil Fruits.

Is anyone else thinking that it is getting to be about time for Vegapunk to actually make a formal appearance? Anybody, because he has been mentioned to have great influence in the One Piece world since before the timeskip and since then we have been meeting his old associates who have revealed more and more about him as well as their own work. I don't know about anyone else, but I think a meeting with him should happen soon.
The reason for the double name scheme of DFs is a Japanese language quirk. Repeating the word makes it a unique object. While Gomu Gomu no Mi is literally read as Rubber Rubber Fruit, in context it means THE Rubber fruit. If it was just the Gomu no Mi, that would imply their are other Gomu no Mis. You can see this in the SMILE fruits that do not use the double names, as they are not unique.

To add to the discussion on luffy being a "chosen one", that doesnt apply to luffy because being a chosen assumes that you were given, or born with something. Luffy and Shanks had no expectation that luffy would get this fruit or eat it. It was a haphazard situation that Shanks wasn't ready to see happen, and instead of letting luffy die, he saved him and let him have his adventure. Luffy wasnt chosen, he was lucky. Everything around him was special but he never was and even now, he still isnt special except for the fact that he WORKED to be special. With a fruit that someone like buggy, for example, doesnt have the creativity or drive to make work.
Except that he is the chosen one.. He's joy boy.
@@rubendiaz3452 Not really, joy boy we know now refers to the fruit, not some prophecy. Chosen one commonly means that he fufills a prophecy sort of thing but Luffy just happens to fit a criteria. He wasnt just given all these things

Luffy always had Looney Tunes like abilities if you look back, often ment as a joke but maybe they were also just hints.
For example:
Miso Luffy (including actually springing a leak, is just peak cartoon physics)
Gomu Gomu no Ufo, how can you fly by just spinning your legs, except in cartoons?
Also G3 really doesn't make sense, couse blowing air into your bones would only increase volume not mass, (it's not that if you blow up a balloon it gets as heavy as a bowling ball) BUT if the nature of the fruit is imagination, Luffy thinking: blow up arm = Arm bigger = hit harder! It actually happened, and thus with the malleable state of the rubber like properties of the Hito Hito no Mii model Nika, it would work.
Then there's the weird bouncyness of G4, he couldn't even walk properly and was cartoonlike bouncing through Dressrosa when he first transformed.
Also rubber should not be able to create form like that if you think about it....

Agreed. My viewpoint on the sun god Nika fruit is that it allows for anyone to fight in whatever they imagine themselves being able to do. But it's not just. I can shoot laser beams out my eyes, I can breath fire, my fingers shoot air bullets. It has to be believed by the user and understood how to make it a reality. All of luffys abilities are based in rubber but his idiot thinking, meant as praise as he said it himself so many chapters ago, allows for freedom and containment. Freedom to make a gear 3 with increased volume in reality also create mass through his imagination as you said. Containment in that whatever he does moving forward has to be understood or come about through the flexibility of what he could achieve through his rubber paremecia thinking mind
Oh someone did not pay attention in physics. Air also has mass, and if you have a container with enough pressure, it makes a big difference. And since it's really hard to bend rubber that much, the pressure should be pretty high, making the fist a lot heavier

But the mass of uncompressed air is neglectable compared to solid mass of rubber, regular air has a density of about 1,2 mg/cm3 where rubber has a density of about 1340 mg/cm3, (this is over a factor 1000 more per volume since the way Luffy uses it and moves it around his body where his limbs grow and shrink its defenetely not in a highly compressed state in a solid container AND he uses his own lungs to blow himself up... If you could fill an dive tank with just your lungs and not a compressor, I would be REALLY impressed...

People may be exagerating with the "imagination is the limit" part. I don't think it means Luffy' going to start creating black holes, shooting ice, or using Law's fruit. I think the statement was only in regards to rubber. Like before Luffy was still bound by the laws of natural rubber, having a snap-back effect and having to blow air into himself to inflate. So now his body has become much more malleable, and he can do all those things and more, without restrictions. But all still things related to rubber, stretching, enlarging himself, etc, as well as the awakened power to change what he touches into rubber. Which we all already assumed he would be able to do.
Yeah people I think people are blowing things out of proportion with imagination line. Luffys powers are still just rubber at heart.
The sky is the limit in terms of his rubber, he is much more malleable and fluid in gear 5

@@moreover798 that's still in line with rubber from how people explain rubber (I'm not smart enough to refute, it sounds reasonable). Even if it isn't creating fire is something certain people can do even without DF abilities.

I think the key to understand how Luffy's fruit works as a Zoan, is Sengoku. People often forget about him, but in Marineford his fruit also didn't follow the typical Zoan format. He just changed into a glowing, divine version of himself.
I assume when you eat a Zoan fruit of your OWN species (in this case, human) you simply don't get the 3 forms dynamic, for obvious reasons, but since mythical Zoans also give a Paramecia-like ability, you do get that power in your normal/only form. And after the fruit awakens, you get a special "ultimate" form that enhances that special ability.
Maybe when Sengoku first ate his fruit, he didn't have any forms either, and his power was just to shoot those golden shockwaves. And once he awakened, he gained that giant buddha form that enhances that power even more. That would explain how Luffy has been using this Zoan ability like a Paramecia all this time.

I think kidos Awakening is his hybrid form just like the zoen users in impel down, it would make sense because his dragon form is 1 big target but in his hybrid he still has the power of a dragon but the form of a human so he can move better
Pretty sure luffy was supposed to have the power of rubber and that's it. It was Oda's first intention. I do believe he changed his mind at some point after Ennies Lobby.
If you really think about it, nothing before Ennies Lobby can be proven to be a foreshadowing. Most foreshadowing that people point out, could have been engineered after.
I was looking into the nature of the first film used and it is very interesting. The original film that rubber hose cartoons would have used is made of cellulose nitrate. Cellulose nitrate is flexible, resistant to electricity and highly flammable. This fits Luffy's moveset with his flexibility, Lightning immunity and the ability to spontaneously combust (when using Red Hawk/Roc). So with his awakening Luffy has gone from possessing the properties of cellulose nitrate to possessing the power of the cartoons that they contain.
Luffy's gears have always worked on a imagination basis. He needed a speed boost so what did he do? Get "pumped." Trying to coil his body parts to be faster, hence Gear 2 was born. Remember in cartoon where the character blows into their thumb to increase the size of their arm and fist, turning an ineffectual punch into a devastating haymaker? That's Gear 3. Gear 4 is at the gateway to awakening, so the forms serve the needs Luffy thought of. Chasing Speed, Crushing Power, and Impenetrable Defense, things rubber has no business being.
Also like you said, Luffy has no idea about the true nature of his fruit. Even if he did, you have to think about this. Luffy doesn't have the same exposure to cartoons as us. I don't think he's ever seen a cartoon. All the things we know he may be capable of, Luffy may not even have the context to think about it. I don't think he's seen a cartoon or read a silly comic that would give him context on things he could try. He's only been training for fights and survival. He'd come up with some basic stuff like he did with Gear 2-3. But the real cartoony stuff like shapeshifting and morphing to his whim he's out of depth and that's probably gonna be a part of him training with Gear 5.
I can also see him melting into a liquid due to the fire aspect of the fruit which is of course where the fire attacks come from and possibly even the steam for his gears
Totally agree with your second point. He's convinced he's a rubber man and siphons all his creative abilities through that mindset and is so much of an idiot, in a single minded point of view not dumb, that he doesn't understand the true physics of things when just increasing the volume of his abilities. Gear 2 was scientific, gear 3 was little science but major imagination and creation, gear 4 was the previous two while incorporating all kinds of haki

Luffy's fruit has always been something that he adapted through situational requirements, experience and his imagination. As far as the nature of his fruit and reality goes, it seems that like his dreams he doesn't let what seems unrealistic dictate what he can and cannot do. Things that seem silly to his opponents don't seem that way to him since his mind works differently than their own minds do. As far as he is concerned, if it works then it doesn't matter much if it seems silly.
I’m really happy with how Oda handled this. He did it right. It’s interesting how this entire time there have been 2 hito hito no mi users on the straw hats.

4 in the entire one piece world, three are confirmed mythical zoans - Sengoku, Onimaru and Luffy. Though Oda hasn't characterised chopper's devil fruit model yet. Could be another mythical zoan.
I completely hate what he's done here, having Jim Carrey The Mask Luffy couldve been achieved without completely assassinating Luffys characterization up to this point

When talking about Robin I love how the government wanting to take her in ALIVE goes over a lot of people heads. There’s something the government needs to find out as well…
She is the only one that can read the poneglyphs in a whim, after all...
On the subject of Luffy living through something like being ripped to pieces or set on fire: If it does happen, I suspect it will be explained as working similarly to how logia users have to consciously turn their bodies into an element before an attack connects. If Luffy successfully imagines not just what attack is about to hit him, but also how he *could* "bounce back" from it, all *before* the attack connects, then that's how his body will respond.
Side note: If I'm right, then the plot's need for Luffy to develop precognition would make a lot more sense.
Luffy didn’t become the chosen one from eating the fruit he just became a candidate for becoming one, and through his determination he became the first in 800 years to be chosen. I believe this is also why crocus and rayleigh (both probably know the truth of the fruit) say something like "do you think he's gonna be the one" like it's not guranteed. This is also shanks bet, he bet that luffy will awaken it. Luffy trained enough to go from the fruit being seemingly useless for combat to being able to fight one on one with the severely weakend but still "strongest creature". It's not as if he was guaranteed to get to this point after eating the fruit, it was through his own hard work that he got here to finally awaken the fruit. I really like this approach Oda took personally.

Problem is that it still takes away from the whole idea. Because other pirates wanted to be free and find the One Piece. They trained their whole life for it and were also imaginative with their DF abilities to reach that point. But now they could never achieve their goal, because they weren't lucky enough to have a D in their name or have that specific DF. It just makes Luffy much more special than he already was (he had the power to hear the voices already, Kings' haki and a D in his name, so now he got another special treatment).
The prophecy was said joy boy was destined to return in 800 years. All the other nika fruit users were never candidates for becoming the chosen one. Only the nika fruit eater born 800 years after joy boy would become the chosen one. Which so happened to be luffy. Luffy was the chosen one from luck. If he didnt become joy boy the prophecy wouldnt have become true.

Luffy's fruit is the SUN god nika and Blackbeards fruit is the DARKNESS. Luffy has the most ridiculous power, while Blackbeard has most powerful...power. Nika was said to bring smiles to people, while Darkness was said to be the most evil. And they both look similar.

Tekking, i disagree. I think that shanks knew about the fruit when luffy ate it... The thing is that shanks has the fruit with him, away from his ship. If it was a normal treasure, he'd just keep it there, but he had it near him, almost as if to protect it, or to give the fruit to somebody (potentially him looking for ace). with his haki, and the town not really being a danger, he wouldn't have any reason to lock it up, as he'd be aware of most people that would get close to the fruit. The thing was that shanks was distracted during the bandits, and luffy, a kid that he wasn't on guard against, ended up sneaking under his radar. Additionally, he left east blue soon after luffy ate the fruit, as if whatever reason he was in the blue was finished... Which hints at the fruit itself being an important reason as to why he was there for so long
Yeah I think Shanks trusts Makino's bar counter more than he trusts his own pocket. No joke.

@@pobov2458 yes. And with a shorter scope, a planned out power up to match the four yonko makes more sense, since the shichibukai stuff wouldn't be included. So luffy having a powerful fruit makes even more sense, given how short it was going to be
@@pobov2458 oda was planning to end it true.. but he was still planning on having the yonkos (he extended the story after he thought about the shichibukai). so to fight the yonkos, he would need a pretty powerful ability and i dont think oda was gonna make the yonkos any weaker than they are now.. so yeah it kinda makes sense if shanks already knew about the reality of the fruit, and it also makes sense if he didn't... but one thing is for sure.. that oda has been planning something special with luffy's fruit since the beginning.. there have been multiple signs of it and they became much more prevalent after they entered the GL.

What really got me is that the cartoon physics even work on his enemies. Kaido going cartoony and acting like being slammed in the ground would hurt probably surprised him more out of anyone.

I'm not so sure this was his doing. Stuff has always been slightly cartoonish at times, it's tough to tell it's Luffy making kaido seem more animated. I'd like if we got further proof saying this was the case but I don't know, we all want more explanation
With the gear stuff, I think with how much his powers are based on his imagination, we need to also think about what he KNOWS. He probably thinks his bones are all connected, so his imagination and power made it happen. For most of his life he KNEW he was rubber, so he only imagined things he THOUGHT rubber and his body could do

I likened it to the Orks of 40k, they have a sort of unconscious, collaborative, collective psychic ability, meaning that if enough Orks believe something is true, then it will actually become so. And Orks are none too bright, so they think the color yellow makes bigger explosions so they paint it on all their explosives and it does indeed make it bigger.

This actually makes the most sense. During the course of his journey, he learnt about awakenings and watching expert users like katakuri made him think more about using his fruit in different ways, stretching the limits of what he thought rubber was and could do. Now he's realised the true nature of rubber and awakened.

I never understood the too cartoony argument with this chapter. I didn’t even really pick up on the fact that it was exaggerated cartoon style until Luffys eyes popped out of his head. For one it’s so fitting for Luffys character to fit like this. For two it’s a manga already and drawn in a cartoony style. One piece has always been more cartoony than most shonen anime. That’s why it’s a point of pause for people to get into it. But if you’ve gotten this far and haven’t had an issue with it then I don’t see how you can be upset with this. I agree with you that he will probably have more control over it after he gets past the laughing fit. I think that was just how Oda decided to emphasize it for this chapter but we’ll still get the cool scenes here and there. Like it was a well drawn panel and cool art when we finally saw the last page when we see Luffy in full.
@@royaalc7691 I also didn't really pick up on the cartoony aspect until a friend brought it up and I read the chapter again. To me it felt like a way to emphazise the ridiculousness of what's happening in this moment and Kaidos completely unprepared and surprised reaction to it. In his mind, he just killed the Luffy, held his villainous speech explaining how angry he is and how everybody is going to pay and looking for Momo when suddenly CoC bursts from the roof decapacitating his fodder and then him getting grabbed like a was a worm to put up as bait for fishing, getting smacked around like probably never before. If I were Kaido, I think my eyes would also pop out in disbelieve and suprise haha

It feels like a lot of people are pretending that luffy isn’t doing everything we thought an awakened gomu gomu fruit user would do. He’s still rubber the gorosei say that outright. The limit of imagination is what he can do with his own body. He can’t think “die” and have kaido kill over. He’s not invincible.
As many people have been also saying he is just “unbound”. He can move/manipulate his body freely like my fantastic (limited by his imagination represented in the context of rubber) which by no means undermines everything he went through over the years. All that hard work using the fruit the way he did was all him.
Now joyboy definitely had the fruit beforehand (wether that was his real name or a title) but i can see it being a title seeing how joyful luffy is right now. Like we call him strawhat because of his hat, black foot sanji, etc…..

@@backbiter8787 Because of all the themes of "inherited will" throughout One Piece. The Sun God Nika inspired and brought smiles to people through the drums of liberation. Luffy has been doing that the entire series, so it draws a direct connection to the idea of Nika and Joy Boy.
I think another answer is this just simply gives Oda more freedom. It would be a stretch (no pun intended) to continue to give Luffy abilities like Red Hawk but on a higher level and try to explain that with rubber. Culverin (hell, a lot of Gear 4 abilities) made zero sense either following normal rubber logic. Shifting that to "cartoon abilities" makes more sense. I'm sure we'll see some more detailed explanation in the following chapters too.
I think Oda executed this very well, and it doesn’t take anything away from luffy’s character.
I think with the explanation of nika being like a trickster God bringing smiles across faces, and a warrior of liberation (rubber=freedom) being announced joyboy at the same time helps this reveal make sense.

This is a fruit that Blackbeard would not want. It took Luffy a lot of training, plus 800 years, plus a bit of prophecy to reach/unlock.

Something clicked in my head:
The Yami Yami fruit resembling the -Gomu Gomu- Hito Hito Model: Nika fruit makes so much more sense thematically now.
Blackbeard and Luffy resemble each other superficially but inside their exact opposites. Luffy is optimistic, childish (joyboy), full of vigor (or "fire"), and charismatic (rallies slaves), but Blackbeard is a nihilist i.e. full of darkness.
It almost makes me wonder if Blackbeard actually wanted the Nika fruit, but got it mixed up with the Yami Yami. Blackbeard is a fake Joyboy like Kaido; both of them wanted to be Joyboy but they fell to darkness.
I actually don't mind this. Luffy's awakened ability allows him to *bend* reality. Even the Gorosei said it's this world's goofiest power, haha. You could tell Oda had a lot of fun in this chapter

4:50 It’s been established for years that zoan fruits have their own will the moment we saw objects “eat” fruits. Like the dog canon and the elephant sword. As well as the smile fruit users’ animal parts being independent of the user’s will. It’s not a big revelation.

A couple of few hints that you might have known anyways, but hope you enjoy them:
Oda is constantly referring and enhancing the idea that the whole aim for One Piece is to give some inspiration about a long lost concept of "freedom". He's depiction of the world traces every single aspect of our situation as an intertwined social structure, past, present and future. There has been just a very very few people that were more "free" in terms of what One Piece portrays as freedom and most of them are already dead.
I've read that no figure has been the representation of Luffy and I do agree. Luffy being Buddah or Jesus just wouldn't hit as hard as Luffy being something other, a simple peasant just like you or me. Yasue and Zen Goku were perfect representing each of these allegorical figures, because all archetypes are trapped in the cultural mind and had lost most of their meaning so there's no point of making them Luffy, that's why they play a role in the big picture but not as the central goal of the story, there's something.
It has been mentioned that Luffy's brazillian or might fit well its character being from this entity. Even I read some theory that I can't find now that Amazonian's have an archetypical figure that resembles Nikka, which father is an Eagle and its mother is extraterrestial, something like that (can anyone confirm the source?) So there, Ayahuasca is recognized as a beverage that makes people ego's dissipate and through happiness or death you reencounter your truth self, that one person behind all the masks and sees the world as it is, without illusions of power or fake goals.
I do believe we're almost going to reach that point, in which OP fans or at least a few of them realize that the whole point of Oda, is making us realize that beyond the fictional piece, there's us, prisoners in a world that seems to have no common goal, but several and all selfish and condescending. And if we keep following the rope of our own cultural demise we will never meet anyone as Luffy or the Strawhats, people that would do the impossible to reunite the humanity and unfold their eyes so they can see that being the most Hito-Hito is the true key to freedom.
Besides, Oda himself has being doing his part, with his Manga he has being doing nothing but want us to make smile all the way through, make us happy and share all that I've said as hidden as possible since there's always eyes watching.
Forgot to link the idea of what I said about Ayahuasca, yeah, this mixture of plants are original from the Amazons. And it has been in the last couple of years that this part of the world has been in huge danger. Imagine that we all lost the connection to that one single Devil Fruit that makes us more human or more intimate with our own selves. So yeah, that's my two cents.
I loved the set up of Luffys fruit being a Hito-Hito model. I do believe being free has something to do with being reunited with your own humanity, Cool.

Just picture the first group of people hearing about his idea and trusted in him. Don't know why but I feel blessed just thinking about it.
This finally explains Red Hawk to me, because that to me has been a long- LOOOONG running clue that something was up. Everything else could be connected to Rubber, but not the Flames. It makes sense though that he dipped into awakening during that extreme near-death and traumatic experience. An ounce of Sun God Fire.

At the start he had to do the gum-balloon to get enough air into his bones, later he just startet to blew right out his little mouth.... excuse me? where does all the air he is inflating himself coming from? This is just a theory on my part with the only bases being how the goro goro no mi was used in the show and also from tekkings thought of what creature it's based on and how Marco might not have his flames of healing before he was awakened, for example, Enel also declared himself the god of lightning and could become myth and that's how mythical zoans are "created" and every single devil fruit has a "secret" ability that develops the concepts it's based around.
Could it be that in actuality every single devil fruit is a "mythical zoan" in it just depends on how the previous users used the fruit to change the world and if it is actually awakened, every single awakened fruit is a "mythical zoan" category it's just that people with devil fruits have created myths about how people have used them.

Zoan types now apparently have wills of their own, and that one's been evading the WG for centuries, so there shouldn't be anything stopping it from lying about its identity & true powers.

Luffy went straight ahead to fight Enel, believing he was made of rubber, and thinking he was inmune to electricity, so flat out it the power of his imagination... that's crazy.
This kinda makes me hope we see Enel again later on. The whole "Moon God meets Sun God" dynamic would be interesting in my opinion.
Also this makes sense atleast story wise for luffy to be a mythical zoan. This way he yamato momo marco share one devil fruit category and fullfil the Momotaro lore.
Just saw something really cool rewatching episode 69 dubbed, its where Garp is training Coby on a beach with a full moon in the background and Coby is influenced by luffys speech when they first met, then we see Garp laughing hysterically with the sound of drums playing! With all the 'will' inheritance and Joy Boy themes going on it could be relevant or just another great piece of foreshadowing!

Oda did great using the gear forms to foreshadow the zoan reveal . Made alot of sense when I thought about the fact that he essentially developed his hybrid forms one aspect at a time then in this latest chapter all of those powers were combined

Around the time blackbeard showed off his devil fruit I had a theory that luffy had a special logia fruit too since the only one that seemed to have similar properties was Mr. 1's.
Also, this new power seems to have turned him into the mask.
Random thought that popped into my head.... The Samurais of Wano show that you dont know the name of your fruit automatically, they call their abilities magic.....
The namingscheme for devilfruits could be Something characters pick up from Other characters. Luffy could call his fruit Gomu Gomu No Mi because Shanks outright said that name to him and his new abilities seemed to fit to that name
My running theory is that luffy's training isnt what awakened his devil fruit. My personal belief is that its his WILL to want to Liberate people. The biggest part of the story that alot of people skip over is the importance of WILL, in this chapter we know that zoan's have a WILL of their own, The WILL of D is a mystery we've been trying to figure out since Alabasta, Luffy gets the straw hat because Shanks see's Roger's WILL in him, Rayliegh trains Luffy because he sees the strength of his will. My basis is that in just about every arch we see luffy get a sudo powerup every time that he's about to fail to LIBERATE someone. Some prime examples of this is in alabasta when luffy keeps losing to crocodile and he finally is able to beat him at the end of the arch JUST as hes about to fail to liberate the country from Crocidile, in Ennies Lobby Luffy powers up to beat Lucci just as they are about to lose and robin would no longer be liberated, and as Ace was about to be executed we see him activate Conquerers Haki (I know its the second time we see it but even the first time we see him use it it's to save people who are captured and turned to stone). There are countless other situations where similar things happen, skypia for instance, but in WANO it finally awakened because luffy lost, and this time it would have been for good, Luffy would have failed to Liberate Wano from Kaido. This being said The fruit isn't the reason Luffy liberates, I believe its Luffy's will that combines so well with the zoan's own will that allows him to awaken the fruit, which is why other's cant awaken the same fruit. In 800 years no one other than luffy had the fruit AND the will to properly use the fruit. I believe that Roger would have been able to awaken the fruit had he had the gomu gomu no-mi, however he never obtained it so it was just his WILL that allowed him to liberate people, this is why we see that roger Haki is so strong, there were mostlikely other in the same situation as roger over 800 years, whom inherited the will to liberate but never the fruit as well as those who obtained the fruit but not the will. if that's the case this would mean luffy would still not be a "child of destiny" troupe but rather would be a happy accident that did the right thing for the right reasons. Also I've also not seen anyone mention how weird it is that Luffy's fruit is about liberating the world, and his father is literally the leader of the revolutionary army..... I feel like that's gunna be something important in the near future.

I think it's also important to mention that i think shanks knew what the gomu gomu is when he took it, that's why he was so upset when luffy ate it. if you think about it, what purpose would the redhaired pirates have had to know it was called the gomu gomu no-mi ahead of time. my belief is that roger told shanks the secret of the gomu gomu no-mi but said a quote to shanks before his death. I believe that laughtale hold luffy's story.... dont forget time travel exists in this universe so it is certainly possible, and if they wanted to be sure the government couldnt kill luffy ahead of time they would use the psudoname of Joyboy. This quote would be EXACTLY what luffy said to shanks on dawn island. this is also why roger turns himself in at the begining of the story..... we know he had an uncurable illness but he knew rouge was pregnant and ace was to be born, what sick man wouldnt want to spend every waking moment he had left with his family whom he even disbanded his crew for unless he knew theyd be taken care of, this is why he trusted garp with ace, Roger told Garp about the future and how Joyboy (luffy) would liberate the planet, this is why ace was raised with luffy, this is also why luffy and ace werent raised by garp's side on a marine base in HQ, we know Cipher Pol existed and there have been characters in the past who were children and were raised outside cipherpol but in the marines so why not bring them there and avoid possible corruption? because Garp knew the importance of ace and luffy growing up together and lufy becoming a pirate, remember that luffy is only brought to ace AFTER getting the power of the gomu gomu no mi and the straw hat, this also circles back to Dragon, leader of the revolutionary army who just so happened to be there to get Sabo from dawn island and just so happens to be garps son. almost like garp told him about the future and what needed to be done, so to tie it in a nice little bow tie here........ Shanks never made it to laughtale (at least as a child) that has been confirmed > Shanks is told about joyboy by roger and is told about the gomu gomu because Roger knows shanks will find joyboy in the future > roger dies but explains the situation to garp > garp gets ace and leaves him with dadan > luffy meets shanks who just found the fruit roger told him about and wants to complete the mission his captain told him about > luffy eats the fruit and the redhair pirates have a drawing of it ( if they didnt know what fruit it was they would have had the encyclopedia not a hand drawn picture of the fruit) > luffy says the exact quote roger told shanks > luffy gets hat > luffy is brought to live with dadan (because garp now knows that he needs too meet ace to liberate the world one day) > in the future Ace is Executed ( garp knows this and this is why in laughtale roger is crying, also why he insists on the name ace same as his sword. this is also why garp feels so helpless at the execution) > the story continues on.... A theory like this could really help with Sabo as well, because this would mean sabo is a key part to the liberation of the world rather than ACE 2.0. one last thing I just want people to think about how often theyve laughed while reading/watching one piece, it is a TALE that brings alot of emotion isnt it, also remember that rayleigh says they were too soon and roger says he wishes he was born in the same era as joy boy, but they never said anything about being too late or about joy boy even being from the void century. what if the void century doesn't have any information because it hasn't happened yet? the world government could have made it up as a scare tactic to prevent future uprisings.

I had always found it interesting that everyone seemed to understand what was up with their fruit after eating it but Luffy had to have his devil fruit explained to him by shanks
I genuinely don't think anything really changes about Luffy's abilities. His powers have ALWAYS been based on his imagination, that's the point of the fruit. He's only been limited by the idea that he was a paramecia fruit and was bound to those rules. Once he learns that he doesn't need to abide by the rules of paramecia fruit, I can see him just having more variability with HOW he uses his powers.
Literally the majority of what Luffy did against Kaido, is stuff people thought he'd be able to do for years now.
I agree, as well. There may be some "new" abilities that are basically just slight deviations on what we've seen Luffy do already. It would just be bigger and stronger now with his awakening.

Luffy gonna turn his head into an anvil. What I get from this is that Luffy is no longer limited to just stretching and slightly expanding. He can literally manipulate his body in ANY way he wants at will.
But heres the crazy part. Luffys ZOAN awakening has paramecia awakening traits. Lets assume Kaido is an awakened Zoan, like Marco. Neither Kaido nor Marco can apply their zoan abilities to an object. Luffy put rubber on the ground like a paramecia would. I think the 'freedom' aspect of luffys fruit will allow him the abilities of paramecia awakenings, and maybe even logias
Actually Kaido applies hiw devil fruit to the island to lift it.
He can also use fire, Lightning and wind elements.

Mythical Zoans play by their own rules in how their powers are expressed. No Mythical Zoan we know of behaves the same as another one.

What if, just if, Shanks didn't know shit about the fruit other than what the encyclopedia says? It could be as simple as devil fruits being highly valuable, if one is transported by cipher pol all the more reason that it would be highly valuable. It doesn't have to have some greater meaning

Hey, have you notice that the type of animation from which the Luffy's powers are inspired is called "Rubberhose animation". Is makes perferct sense and fits extreamly well with the story
I was thinking earlier about Luffy and his new powers, and it kinda reminded me of that artist lady on dresrossa who did that horrible thing to Nami. It made me think if Kanjuro had that lady's fruit, which seems like the downgraded version of Luffy's fruit, if he would have been more powerful.
This development with Luffy's fruit probably does have hard limitations or drawbacks, especially when it concerns awakening the fruit. Law and Kid both had major exhaustion when they used their awakenings. Chopper couldn't even control Monster Point (probably because he came to it through Rumble Balls).
I feel like this new ability will be able to just provide Luffy with simply more power, like the other gears. He's still limited by his imagination and by the fact that he, right now, thinks that his fruit only a paramecia that turns him into rubber. He can't explore what this development is yet, he just knows something is happening and called it Gear 5. I feel like this new and overwhelming power provided by the fruit is still based on his training. He had to train to get to this point, with abilities that he came up with and he's been rewarded for it.
I also feel like the abilities aren't limiteless and all powerful. All we kinda know/speculate about this fruit and the void century is that the previous Joyboy lost to the World Government or some other force. The fruit may be powerful, but the World Government and probably Blackbeard would probably still be able to contend with it.
Also, when he brings up the point as to why they didn't go after Luffy right away, it may be true that they didn't know Luffy had it, but I also feel like if they did have to go and do something about Luffy early on, they would have to contend with Garp, and they probably can't tell Garp about the fruit.
Lastly, I just remembered that, during Marineford, I believe it was Mihawk or Sengoku who said something like "He has the natural ability to draw people to him... this could be a problem". That can possibly be the fruit doing its thing!

I’ve immediately thought of Jim Carrey’s “The Mask” when you mentioned the cartoonish powers and Luffy laughing like a lunatic. It would definitely fit.
With this power, I think Luffy could TOTALLY do the hammer thing. He's been shown to effect the environment (even other pirates powers to an extent as we saw with Kaido's Boro Breath.) Get a small hammer, give it the properties of rubber, and make it huge. It doesn't sound like Luffy's style of fighting, but he could totally do it.

At first the concept of him being a zoan fruit user confused me, because his power. Is rubber. HOWEVER it makes sense because he is just channeling the power of Nika, which is Rubber and to an extent Fire
And its quite possible, Sengoku, who's fruit is of the same nature as Luffys fruit. Most likely displays the abilities of the Buddha, and the Daibutsu form we seen at Marineford was him flexing his Awakening, Luffy is channeling the power of Nika, which Nika was a deity who governed the power of rubber and to an extent fire

@@stempest7218 Yea!! I just look at it as Nika was a God who had power over rubber/elasticity. Itd be like someone eating a hito hito no mi Mythical model Fujin. They would probably get confused as a Logia user when in fact they can control wind because Fujin governed over the element of wind.

As far as luffy having a fruit that makes him automatically the strongest I also disagree because the fruit is limited by its holder’s imagination. So say if someone like zoro or law people that are much more serious ate the fruit it would probably be borderline useless

You're absolutely right. I mean just look at how Long John Magnum used the gomu gomu no mi (if you know, you know).
Maybe the reason they're called devil fruits is because their power was created by an actual devil. It's power (the same as the Yami Yami no mi) is able to draw things in, and it drew in the powers of all these beings to create devil fruits. The reason zoans have a will of their own is because they were taken from living things unlike non living things like string or fire. So the Yami Yami no mi was the original devil fruit power which is why it is so special and able to take in and negate other devil fruits. It has a sort of hierarchy over them, the only draw back is that it takes in damage too.

Luffy already was pounded flat in his fight against Moria, when Luffy got trapped in Moria's "shadow box", which Moria then trampled on. But Luffy said that such actions wouldn't be effective against him as he was made of rubber.

it's funny how people think that Luffy having this fruit makes him the chosen one while they all ignore the fact that:
-Luffy is from a remote village and got his initial drive from one of his only friends, a member of Roger's crew, who sacrificed his arm to save him
-Luffy is a member of the D. clan, making him a sworn enemy of the gods just by existing
-Luffy is the sworn brother of the son of the pirate king
-Luffy is the grandson of the legendary marine, Garp and the son of the most wanted man in the world
-Luffy has the ability to befriend every neutral person he meets and he could even befriend some of his enemies
-Luffy was trained by the pirate king's right hand man
-Luffy has always been able to shrug off any kind of injury, no matter how severe it was

There is one thing I have always found interesting with luffy's character design. He always remains lanky. EVEN when he trained like crazy and you could see he was Ripped in wano, he still had pretty much just a lanky body. What if that is not his normal body type? What if that is actually a side effect of the Fruit? Because he's lived almost his entire life with it, he probably doesn't even register it, but maybe he is using his hybrid form all the time? IDK just some food for thought.
This would also explain his INSANE regenerative powers and stamina, and how he can pretty much bounce back from anything. He's a Zoan. It comes with the territory by default.

I doubt he has the 3 normal zoan forms. I think the hito hito no mi does in fact not have forms normally, but let's the user bend their body in weird ways. We see this with chopper not having a straight up human form and messing with his body in many ways through training and the rumble balls. We also kinda saw this with Sengoku, who is the only other mythical hito hito no mi we've seen, go straight from human to Buddha. So luffy goes from human to Nika. It's very much likely that Sengoku could only turn into a Buddha after awakening, and had the Shockwaves or other powers but not the ability to change to the Buddha. Luffy had the rubber body as his ability and then with the awakening he turned into the actual Nika.
@@spyrosfronimos9742 i kinda agree with you. My point is that the hito hito no mi affects the user outside of just the baseline powers. For example, it molds the user's body to more fit in line with the fruit's concept as well as give them the powers they grant.
I said hybrid as we literally do not have any other term for this. But what I'm saying is, what if the hito hito fruits do mold their users bodies and they can choose to take that form or not if they consciously desire it, But because Luffy always thought the fruit was a paramecia and he still was growing up, he was a child, his body took a more "Nika"-like appearance and that's the body shape Luffy has that is so characteristic of his.
@Bruno Caruso you missed my point. Luffy's body type being shaped by the fruit and making him look the way he does as a side effect was my point. We just never noticed, not even he himself did, because he literally grew up with the fruit and therefore the changes were attributed to his natural growth.
the big irony with chopper is since humans are a type of ape his 'human form' looking like a gorilla might make some sense if you look at it from that perspective

One thing I like about this awakening is it explains how gear 3rd works. Cause normally blowing up your bones would not make you hit harder. It would typically make you hit way weaker. So I kinda like this.
Answers to some of you complaints, maybe:
I would also add that luffy’s Devil fruit is very much like Laws where the fruit is powerful but becomes more powerful in the right hands. Ope ope fruit is best used by someone with medical knowledge while Luffy’s fruit is best used with someone who seeks freedom and has a great imagination.
Also, let’s not forget how Kuna was sent after Luffy to kill him and everyone on the island under the order of the world government.
And to explain why the characters call Devi fruits by that name is probably just the excepted norm. We have never seen a character eat a fruit without bing told or having connections to what the name could be. It’s probably the same reason why everyone calls them devil fruits instead of by a different name. And we learned that frits can be given different names so it is possible some named a fruit not in the devil fruit encyclopedia. And if they want to name it, they probably would call it the devil fruit by the same naming conviction because that’s how other devil fruits are named.
We straight up see people not calling a Devil Fruit by it's "name" in Wano. Kinemon doesn't call his fruit the Fuku Fuku no Mi. He calls it magic and gave it the name Cloth Cloth Technique. Raizo and Shinobu call their abilities Jutsus and don't attribute them to Devil Fruits even though they are. I do think that people call the fruits as they are because that naming way have become the normal way as that's how the encyclopedias lists them.

And the abilities can have a similar naming convention by hapen stance like ho animals can evolve similar traits that are not related to one another. but the people of Wano don’t give names to the fruits but the abilities they have. Also, they are isolated from the world so the would have no idea how to name the fruits.
Also, because they are isolated, they can develop a similar naming scene by chance.
@@mangamandrew that's semantics. Because Wano people wouldn't know what Devil Fruits are, it proves that the name didn't pop into their heads when they ate it. They don't even attribute their abilities to a fruit. It's a Jutsu or Magic. Most people of the world get the name or have that naming convention because it's the norm and that's how the government names those fruits. Has nothing to do with something mystical going on in their heads at the time the fruit is ate.

And that’s what my explanation is trying to convey. The the reason why they all have a similar naming scheme is based on the fact that it’s how they are named already. And those who have devil fruits would know the naming scene and most likely use it instead of a different one. This can apply to Wano as well because the idea of these powers could crop up a similar naming scheme by chance.
It is also possible that the form we see Luffy in now is the Nika part of his devil fruit and not because of the awakening. So, if Luffy realized that his power was a zoan from the start, we might have seen this form since east blue. It is just that now, his rubber power is way way more malleable.
That's EXACTLY why Oda added that panel about "his only restriction is his imagination" and since he was told day 1 he wasn't a zoan, he had no reason to even imagine what his full zoan transformation would be
I don't know, I like the idea he couldn't have. It takes the road traveled to unlock the potential.
First) luffys new powers feel very much like the Mask from The Mask which is neat and cool.
Second) bringing up toons and stuff makes me thing a Toons RPG set on the one piece would might be hilarious. (Using the Toons RPG ruleset that is)
Was reading some of the Japanese comments as well and it seems that the new form is generally pretty well accepted as a very fun power
