I don’t think the Nika DF gives Luffy the qualities Mihawk was talking about but the other way around. Luffy’s qualities is what allowed him to unlock those powers. So the Nika fruit seeks people who behave like Luffy since they seem to have their own wills.

yeah, this. we know the fruit has been eluding the government for 800 years, so obviously there have been other eaters in that time. but no one's awakened it since joyboy, which we know because zunesha hasn't heard the drums of liberation since then.
oda hinted this fruit at empel dawn, he said that zoon fruit can heal themselves faster than a normal devil fruit user, in the same arc luffy got pisoned and fought for 10 hours to survive, then he ate and became better, also we know that zoon fruit can transform and luffy can also transform (gears), god I love one piece

This makes Enel's mockery of Luffy's devil fruit even funnier in retrospect. The way he was bragging about being a Logia while Luffy was "just a paramecia" is even funnier now that we know that the fruit that made Enel look like a fool was part of the group that's widely considered the weakest of the three types, meanwhile Enel's was considered the strongest fruit of the strongest group.

Also Luffy was discribed as "Natural enemy" to Enel (who is claiming to be a god), while Luffy has the Devil Fruit said to be the Natural Enemy of the World Government (who is also claiming to be God)
Logia are considered stronger than Zoan, especially in Paradise, where a Logia makes you untouchable.
Enel was also a false god, belittling a literal god.

I've always interpreted Luffy being able to heal himself via eating meat and grow back teeth via milk as him having mastered Life Return (If you don't remember what that is re read ennies lobby as Kumadori uses it a lot and even Lucci uses it a bit). It would make sense that someone as talented as luffy could figure it out on his own, after all Sanji figured out geppo on his own, another technique that cp9 used.

I think all those ''gears'' were his zoan transformations, something funny about that was some of his transformations had ''man'' like snakeman, boundman, tankman, which goes to the fruit ''hito'', or ''human'' so Luffy had the zoan transformations all this time
I don't like the iea that the gears were his zoan forms. I like to think that they are just something you can do with a rubber body, and that the gears were created by luffy, not that they came with the fruit

Every Devil Fruit has its limits, even Mythic ones. If we're talking about Toon Force, I don't think Luffy will make it to "The Mask" level (That would be too OP), but I imagine he's around "Tom and Jerry" level.
I think Tom and Jerry level is too low for the use of Toon force.
He'll definitely not be as absurd as Bugs or The Mask, but maybe something of the level of other looney toons characters like Wile E. Coyote, or the skunk ( I forgot the full name, it ended with Pew).
I doubt Luffy really has toon force in the traditional sense people r really just hyping this shit up too much

To be fair, brook also regrew his bones with milk. So either Luffy has had the ability to afflict others with his fruit for awhile even tho it seems like he JUST awakened it, or One Piece also has some natural silly in it.

This actually explains why everybody was always weirded out when they saw luffys abilities. With all of the devil fruits in the world and how ridiculous they can get(looking at you jacket jacket fruit) why was luffys the one that caused people to scratch their heads.

Most of the surprise in people, also happened in areas where devil fruits are rare, and devil fruit users rarer still. As Luffy moves forward on his journey, the number of people surprised to see Luffy's power, drops drastically. The latest surprise is from Kaido, claiming Rubber is behaving in a manner not natural to rubber... But there was 0 surprise from everyone on Whole Cake Island concerning Luffy's power, and instead surprise that Luffy not only defeated Cracker, but also Katakuri.
On Wano, most of the surprise was in Luffy's Stamina, even with Sea prism stone hindering his use of devil fruit powers. Luffy surprised everyone on fishman island, not because of devil fruit, but because of his strength and speed, despite being "human." Punk Hazard, only the children were surprised by Luffy's Devil Fruit abilities, but that's due to isolation from the rest of the world. Dressrosa, they were suprised by Luffy's resilience.
Enel was surprised because Luffy was a natural counter to lightning.
Amazon Lilly, isolation, and lies by the Boa sisters.
Mink's home, surprised their static discharge wasn't affecting Luffy, not about the devil fruit ability itself.
It makes sense considering his devil fruit requires him to make physical contact with his limbs. On paper, his devil fruit puts him at a huge disadvantage because he can lose his limbs if he makes a bad move (like when he tried to punch Mihawk, both of his arms would have been cut off)

The idea of Luffy being able to warp reality instead of just himself fits with your theory that awakening gives you the power to affect the world around you with your df
It's not a theory it's a fact. Doflamingo confirmed it early on that big that awakenings can alter their environment
Luffy was given the base form of rubber because Oda's inspiration for the fruit animation style literally called "RUBBER hose animation". If you look back to every incarnation of Nika that Oda has drawn it's in the same style as rubber hose animation as well, where the defining feature is rubber hose like limbs that generally look like flowing curves instead of actual limbs with elbows and knees.... Oda is a genius and I'm always so blown away from his thought process for this series

I actually took his power in the opposite direction. I believe he's powered by the LACK of smiles. He awoke that form when they "lost". Everyone was sad, and accepted defeat. The ability to spread smiles to the nakama was desperately needed
Or maybe Kaido's smile awakened the fruit, but in a delayed fashion. Kind of funny, if that is the case.

that would explain Luffy not smiling after Usopp leaving and then coming up with Gear 2/3. Something similar may have happened during the timeskip, like Luffy fell to despair after losing Ace and then stumbled upon Gear 4, but couldn't control it properly because he didn't have basic Haki training.

I like that the fruit is limited to the user's battle IQ and imagination. That means if some average Joe had the fruit, it wouldn't be as effective as Luffy.

There are many characters with great df but the user lacked how to use it..so whatever the fruit maybe it all depends upon the user

Bakugoness, he is extremely reactive, tactical and always looking for new ways to improve his quark. Multiple times in the series he has come up with vary effective ways to combat opponents after seeing their skills just once.

I don't know if this would help or not. But their is a colored manga version of One Piece online. It's not fully up to date yet (I believe it's currently on chapter 964) but they do update it.
Conditions like yours is only acceptable reason to watch dubbed, subbed voice actors are far better.

This does feel very much like a toon-style power up for Luffy. I mean, just look at how he does his gear three and four, which is to inflate his limbs by blowing into his thumb or forearm and inflate it that way. It feels like this is how he conceptualized the idea of expanding his body via his own logic, and now that he's awakened his DF and, possibly, understands it, he can just will it to happen.
This makes me wonder do you need to fully awaken all mythical zoans to do a full transformation, or is this just limited to the sun god fruit. Like was it the case that at first Marco only had healing flames before he awakened to the ability to do a full phoenix transformation.
It is actually a really good point. I can’t think of any mythical zoan user we have seen in full form and wasn’t already in a power level enough to have their df awakened. Maybe in mythical zoans the awakening is unlocking the full form, and all the wacky illogical powers of luffy were the unawakened manifestation of nika.
I feel like everyone is reading too much into the idea that Luffy spreading joy is a result of his devil fruit. I think that that simply isn't true. Luffy has a very creative mind, which lets him come up with all sorts of ways to use his rubber body. The reason why he puts smiles on people's faces is simply because of luffy's nature and his unparalleled charisma, it's as simple as that.
Hear me out: The Gorosei have been saying that the devil fruit had a mind of it’s own, one of the reasons why Shanks was able to steal it easy peasy. What if the devil fruit seeks out people with the charisma and heart to put smiles on the faces of others. Essentially, the devil fruit only allows those that can carry it’s desire to make people happy to eat it.

This only goes to show that the Devil Fruit Encyclopedia should return. We have so much new ground to cover both in terms of discussing new fruits as well as incorporating the redefinitions of previous ones, least of which being this titular Zoan.
😂😂I saw Ayaka’s fan and freaked out. Hearing Liam narrate a Genshin Impact sponsor with his dry humor is definitely something I didn’t expect to enjoy so much.
My favorite example of toon powers being active in early One Piece is Luffy lifting Zola's eyelid from inside it's eye. Oda even chose to address it in an SBS asking Luffy how he did it and they both agree that as long as it was fun who cares? Then they laugh.
The absolute mad lad Oda always knew this was coming.

The greatest clue about the ridiculous aspect of the fruit and the "imagination is necessary to get the best out of it" is in the battle against Katakuri.
Luffy literally imagines his arms as cobras and commands them to chase Katakuri which the arms did.
That is a clear foreshadowing of whatever Luffy imagines can be done with the fruit.
I thought it was more of Geppo, his arms jump*, turn sharp in different directions and he can keep up whit Observation Haki.

@@Cogexkintrue Well take rubber balls, you slam it to the ground, it takes in elastic force and shoots itself upwards. Python slams against air to change directions and angle very sharp. Observation can keep count of the speed and angle and future vision could a planned all it ahead to make it seem alive.

If Luffy gets stronger being in proximity to those laughing/smiling, I imagine the people who ate defective smile fruits will will be very important. I also like how this works narratively, with the misery that Kaidou caused to the people of Wano being his own downfall

The joy of cartoons started with rubber hose animation. Therefore I think that oda used rubber as the base ability for Luffy's devil fruit.
Felt the need to add this somewhere but I love the fact Luffys “Final Form” is not some big guy like Gear 4th but his normal form with slight changes. It looks a lot cooler imo

I love how every narrative aspect of luffy has to be chalked up to his devil fruit instead of just neatly following the theme of rubber, red hawk is caused by friction induced through haki, luffy’s powers aren’t just he can imagine anything and it happens, it only applies to his rubbery body going beyond human limits. His body can bend in all kinds of free ways due to being rubber. Awakening enhances his rubber ability to stretch in any way without limitations. That’s it. It’s not toon power. He’s not bending reality. He can make other things rubber IF he touches them, like how Blackbeard has to touch them.
There actually is real world lore to support luffys powers. It’s just not well known. The short of it is this: there are trees called banyan trees. Banyan trees are known to produce rubber. In some cultures, banyan trees are called wish granting trees. There is an island in India with a banyan wishing tree. It is known as the Nika wishing tree. It was said that magical creatures inhabited the tree. The magical creatures were able to communicate with all things, animals, stars, plants, etc. aside from this, they could also hear the dreams and wishes of humans. If the humans wished for good things and were positive people, their wishes would be granted. There are more connections to luffy in this lore but that’s the short of it.
It isn't exactly the same considering it isn't a devil fruit power, but the "fiction within fiction" thing also applies to Dellinger as a Fighting Fish fishman

I remember way back during the Dressrosa arc, when we first learnt about devil fruit awakening, I used to make theories about Luffy's. One of these theories was that he could give the properties of rubber to objects around him and I dismissed it immediately because I thought Oda wouldn't do sth like that. Boy was I wrong.

@@cheesvr3577 Not necessarily. Foxy's fruit for example could be upgraded in many ways. For example 1) his beams instead of slowing things could stop time, 2)create a field around him that slows things, 3)longer slows or bigger range, etc. There are many ways a paramecia could be upgraded.

The flames in Luffy’s red hawk move must come from the “Sun God” part of his devil fruit, I don’t think he can just use whatever he has a strong connection to. I mean, his hair is literally flames in this form, what else do I need to say

Thinking too small. He created fire because of his connection to Ace and his imagination willed it so. He only becomes "Sun God" after awakening.
Had this video playing in the background but wasn’t actually looking at the screen, I heard an absolutely perfect Gecko Moria laugh and assumed Liam played a clip of him for some reason, but when i went back to look i found out it was just his imitation! That was spot on 👌

Could it be that Luffy's devil fruit powers manifested as rubber because he thought it? When he ate the devil fruit, the first thing Shanks does is pick him up from the ankles and try and shake the fruit out of him. Maybe Luffy imagined his legs bouncing in that moment and that made the nika fruit manifest that way. It seems like a very Luffy move 🤔

Honestly, I would argue that there is a very simple in-world explanation for why the Nika fruit generally manifested as rubber powers, and it comes down to how the fruit's true powers work.
In it's most fundamental form, the Nika fruit allows it's user to manifest what they can imagine into reality, such as how Luffy manifested fire into his attacks after Ace's death. Given this, it's entirely reasonable that if you were to give that fruit to someone who doesn't know what it can truly do, and convince them it will turn their body to rubber, then the powers will manifest as if it turned their body to rubber, since that it what they imagine the fruit is capable of. And you don't have to use rubber, either, as it could work with anything; such as convincing someone it will allow them to manifest infinite quantities of cotton candy, and viola, they can produce infinite quantities of cotton candy.
It is simply a combination of how the fruit's true powers work, and the deception the World Government established regarding the fruit's nature; the powers of the fruit manifested as "rubber body" simply because everyone was convinced that's what it would do.
I still have a hard time believing the fruit is that limitless simply because it would be a nightmare to choreograph. If it's just a general Nika buff, greater control over rubber body, and ability to manipulate surroundings, that opens up a lot of possibilities without making Luffy completely broken.

I've spent two full days thinking about this reveal and the more thought I put in, the more it all falls into place. It may be impossible to know how long a game Oda is playing, but I'm willing to believe this was planning this from the start.
I've always consisered Oda a great story author, but not one that breaks the 4th wall and makes me think in a philosophical way. But now with this meta idea that Luffy can make people smile, including the reader, with a power that transcends, my opinion of Oda as an author changed.

I always thought that luffys fire attack where from him making his body vibrate fast enough to ignite or that it had built enough speed in his attack that it ignites(similar to a rocket re-entering the atmosphere)

Think his ultimate power is a play on "rubber hose animation" which era characters like Pop-eye are from, which makes even more sense when his gear 3rd attacks involve inflating his forearms or feet (as well as being a physical powerhouse despite being the cartoonishy skinny). Plus the activation of blowing air into your thumb inflating your muscles is another cliche from old cartoons. I know the reason he will be godly overpowered is his power in comics is called toon force which makes characters like The Mask and Deadpool have 4th wall breaking levels of powers.
The rubber aspect comes from the sun god being inspired by the Olmec civilization, which were one of the first known civilizations to discover and use rubber.
Since I started one piece I speculated that Luffys fruit was more then just rubber. Wasn’t fully sure what it would be. But I just thought it was like the concept of rubber and “bouncing back” or rebounding. To me it seemed like he was bending probability, the will of others, the social constraints in the world etc… to me it didn’t just seem like a physical rubber ability alone… like it stretched (excuse the pun) more into the metaphorical concept of rubber, and stretching what one would consider “normal” he literally bends the world to his whim.

I still really like that Luffy's weakness is cutting damage and he is immune to blunt damange. I hope that persists into his god form. On that note, I always thought it was really smart on Luffy's part (likely unintentionally so) to recruit the greatest swordsman considering his weakness to cut damage. If you can't beat 'em, recruit 'em.
He still has one of the strongest applications of armaments haki at his disposal

Oda-san must've had a good childhood. The correlation between Toony-Monkey and Rubber is the definition of American Cartoons back in the 60's and 70's. Toons back then were refered to as "Rubber Toons" because of there Bendy and Buoyant appearances and gags across their respective series. One infamous Rubber-Toon you might know of Liam is "Popeye the Sailor Man". Whenever the goings were tough, Popeye + One can of spinach defied even Gods!! Might I suggest you look up Saitama vs Popeye by "Death Battle". Might inspire a video or two with the developments recently in One Piece. Keep up the fantastic content.

I honestly like the look of his 5th Gear. It sends me back to the time where One Piece was a cartoonish show in its earlier days. After how serious Wano has been getting for the past many chapters, seeing Luffy smile happy-go-luckily gets me pumped up more than ever when it comes to his fight with Kaido.
Yeah a lot of people say that they don't understand why him being a Looney Toon character, has any part of the concept of Joy boy, and I'm like cartoons been Joy literary, the bring smiles to people and they do things that others just can't do, that was the whole point of their creation.
Im wondering how much luffy can really 'warp' reality tho- it looks like he gave the ground rubber properties, which would be in line with some other awakenings we've seen. I'm not sure whether kaido's cartoon eyes were for comedic effect or a thing that is part of Luffy's fruit. Either way, this reveal and chapter was so good. Im glad I got caught up in time to witness it live!
I believe Kaido’s reactions are part of Luffy’s power, remember at the end of Skypiea when they fall off the end of the sky sea? They all had those eyes back then too! I think Luffy may have had some kind of minor effect to the rest of his crew back then.

My one issue with your logic is that Luffy isn't the only one who has pulled off gags that defied even One Piece logic. Brook can also drink milk to heal his teeth and bones, although maybe that can be attributed to his devil fruit i suppose?
And brook can create fire and zoro can cut fire and we could go on for years smh. People just go out of their way to excuse this new power up, oda is not a god he could very well have started this plot months before wano started ..

@@shadow19 yet, is pretty much hard to make a guess, i would go as far as to say oda thinking about this was about a year or two before wano, he remembered he got so many lore components and he linked them up (is not that hard considering most thing people say are connected and "foreshadowed" are really vague things and really psichologic ones)
I remember reading a quote attributed to Oda a number of years ago which went; (paraphrase) the reason he had decided to give Luffy rubber powers was so that no matter how serious the situation or the fight, he would still be funny. With that in mind, i read the line "bringing smiles to the faces of the people" as Oda breaking the 4th wall and referring to his readers with a statement containing a double meaning.

After the recent revelation I have a theory regarding what Rocks D. Xebec’s devil fruit was. Basically I was thinking it would be the antithesis of luffy’s hito hito no mi model: nika, so basically instead of a god of joy & liberation it is a god of despair, destruction and anarchy. I also believe that black beard will obtain that fruit or it will turn out the Yami yami no mi is actually that fruit doing a similar revelation to luffy’s fruit
I also feel that since the yami yami no mi and the gomu gomu no mi/hito hito nika look nearly identical this may very much add up

After this chapter I am heavily behind the theory that Blackbeard’s fruit is actually a Mythical Zoan too. A god of darkness and chaos.
I especially like this theory because of 1- the fact that Blackbeard's Devil Fruit doesn't behave like a proper Logia (he is still tangible, it exacerbates his pain and suffering), and 2- the fact that Teach was set up fron the first time we met him (which was coincidentally-or-maybe-not just before Skypeia) as Luffy's polar opposite. The whole pie/juice scene, the fact that Luffy is really young and Blackbeard is relatively old, Luffy eats enough food to feed a small country, but is still super fit, while Teach isn't seen eating that often and is basically spherical and has half of his teeth missing, etc.

I only said that the yami yami may turn out to be a mythical zoan hito hito (similar to how luffy's gomu gomu turned out to be a mythical zoan type) was because it was described as the most evil devil fruit and doom god seemed more evil then just darkness so I thought maybe something similar would be revealed. but the main idea is that xebex had the antithesis of the sun god fruit
I thought Luffy's flames were already explained before? That it was a result of the friction with the air caused by just how fast his attack was? Considering he's fast enough to dodge lasers, I'd find that to be believable.
Rubber gives you the freedom to do with it what you want. So it’s the perfect Fundament for a devil fruit that is only limited by your imagination. I feel like this reveal would have been even more fun 15 years ago, being a small boy

Did Shanks seek out the fruit to become joy boy? Did shanks really give luffy the hat because he was passing on the joy boy legacy? Could the fruit seek out the hat and that’s the reason the world government couldn’t get ahold of it for 800 years? Could there be more to chopper fruit usually, zoan devil fruits let the user fully transform in to the species it’s linked to but choppers doesn’t, could it be that his doesn’t turn him into a regular human, plus his fruit does share the same name (Hito Hito no Mi) as luffy’s but luffy implies that there are more than a few. Could chopper be another type like Hito Hito no Mi model beastman for example? Could his multiple transformations have something to do with it and if not could luffy take the medicine and unlock new transformations?

If Luffy’s devil fruit is tied with cartoons, then maybe he isn’t rubber, but instead mimics the animation style of “Rubber-hosing”, a type of animation used in 1930’s cartoons, which makes the bodies and limbs of characters bend, stretch, and twist, as if they were made out of a rubber garden hose.
Gorosei did confirm that his body has the natural properties of rubber.

@@silvergirlXO although it’s just a theory, if it is based off of old cartoons, then the ink used for drawing old cartoons is not conductive, so his fight with Enel could still check out (there are different types of ink out there that are conductive, though they aren’t typically used for art). If that is the case, I think that it is also quite interesting that anime art style on Wano is composed of dark black streaks, like a brush with ink. Infact, an inked portrait of Luffy is how the crew on Wano find out Luffy arrived in the country.

I been thinking that the 800 years of not being able to keep the fruit revealed some insight on why they didn't chase luffy down the second they found out about it. They haven't been able to keep the fruit for 800 years and absolutely nothing happened from it. Heck, they had bigger pirates to fry that were actually active threats. So the government probably thought this was another round of losing the fruit and getting it back with no repercussions.
Edit: forgot I made this post and got a random notification from a like. Two months later and it makes less and less sense that the government didn't chase after luffy since the beginning unless they didn't count it as a threat. With the government spy network they should know the fruit is completely lost and you can't tell me that after a world newborn baby genocide in an effort to kill ace just because of the threat of Gol D Roger's bloodline being a possibility of a threat, well, 100% as soon as luffys fruit was lost the world government would make marines at least start pinching everyone's checks and pass it off as a quirky greeting for citizens to see if they stretch to find a devil fruit if they suspect it to be a more legitimate threat to the government.
If the government really lost the fruit, knew that it could be their downfall and waited until it came to them. That would be the first time reading one piece I would be massively disappointed in the series narrative. But after well over 1000 chapters hitting it out of the park, I guess one thing being a let down is massively impressive.
If you go back and look, basically at every step of the way that Luffy has been a known pirate in possession of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, he has been actively pursued by some of the heaviest hitters under the authority of the World Government.
He just beat them or evaded them every single time.
He defeated 2 warlords, who are employed almost specifically to combat Emperors. He "evaded" Aokiji. He defeated CP9, declared war, and evaded the Buster Call. He "evaded" Garp. He "evaded" Kuma. Evaded Kizaru and the Pacafista, and "evaded" Kuma yet again. Broke into Impel Down and evaded Magellan. He managed to make it through the entirety of Marineford with several Warlords, Vice Admirals, Admirals, and even Sengoku pursuing him, then rolled up to Marine HQ to declare a new era alongside a former Warlord and the Dark King himself.
The Government HAS been trying to get Luffy basically since they learned who he was. They've just failed at every step of the way either because Luffy proved to be much stronger than they anticipated, or because Luffy had help from outside forces that he convinced to assist or ignore him.

I think it's important to linger on it being the "most ridiculous" devil fruit out there. It isn't stated "strongest" but rather "most ridiculous" and I bet you that's very deliberate.
I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet cus there's a lot of comments to go through, but the rubber manifests due to the practical effects of the "Rubber Hose" animation style used in Looney Tunes style cartoons.
Cartoons are the reason for the connection to rubber. I think Luffy has access to the 12 Principles of Animation and one of those is "Squash and Stretch". In fact, looking at the principles it explains other aspects of Luffy as well like Appeal, Exaggeration, and Anticipation.
Could it be that for the finale of Wano, Luffy ends the fight by doing something so epically hilarious that everyone sees it happening and is taken over by the most uncontrollable, side-splitting, genuine laughter, thereby liberating all those enslaved by the cursed smile fruit and truly freeing all of Wano?

Since The Hito Hito no Mi: Nika grants its user a sort of Roger Rabbit effect, an idea for a limitation (drawn straight from Who Framed Roger Rabbit) is what someone can do with this fruit is only limited by what the user or the people around them consider funny, a bit like how Toons in the movie can do anything, but only when it's funny.
It makes Shanks’ horror at Luffy eating that fruit more understandable. Does that also mean that Shanks was hoping to be this era’s Joy Boy?
I love this awakening power far more than the Resin Resin fruit everyone expected.
