- How To Color Your Hair At Home - Home Hair Dye Tips And Tricks
I’ve been colouring my own hair at home for years now and it’s a lot easier than you think. I touch up my regrowth every couple of weeks and it's the quickest and easiest (not to mention cheapest) way I've found to keep my hair in check all year round. I usually visit the salon once or twice a year to get a few highlights added but apart from that I maintain my hair myself. I was recently sent a box of the new Schwarzkopf Colour Specialist to try so thought I'd film a video using it to share my tips and tricks.
MY TOP TIPS FOR DIY COLOURING
Hair dye always comes out darker than the image on the box so be sure to buy one or two shades lighter than your desired colour. It's easier to amp up a colour's intensity than it is to tone it down.
The best way to remove any hair dye that has stained your face, neck or ears is with the product itself. So if you can see any staining on your skin, before washing the colour off, simply get a little product on your finger tip and gently massage it into the stained area and wipe away with a damp cloth.
Dirty hair always colours better so don't wash your hair on the day you plan to colour it.
Permanent dye is best for covering grey hair.
If you're not using a brush to apply the colour use the long nozzle on the end of the bottle that comes in the box to section your hair.
Be sure to buy enough product. If you have really long hair you may need to buy two boxes. You're better buying two than finding out half way through a colour that you need more product.
Chapstick or a product like vaseline is great for running around your hairline to prevent the colour staining your skin.
Wear a black singlet or t-shirt with a neckline large enough to slip off over your hips so you don't need to pull it over your head to get in the shower.
If you're using a new colour, be sure to read the instructions in the box thoroughly as the application may be a little different.
For the first time colouring your hair it's best not to colour it after 7pm as most companies include an 0800 hotline. However, most of these hotlines close around 7pm on weekdays and are closed on weekends. So dying during business hours is always a good idea at first so help is only a phone call away.
Really damaged hair is better left for the pros so if your hair is already damaged from colouring or heat styling then you're best to visit a salon to avoid further damage.
The colour I used in the video is Schwartzkopf Colour Specialist Supreme-Care Colour Creme with OmegaPlex in Cool Light Brown. hair color beauty

Thank you! Chapstick is something I didn't think about.
great tip with the chapstick trick. I've heard of regular vaseline but this has to make it so much easier to control! Can't wait to try it! Thanks!
So glad I clicked on this video, I've been dying my hair at home for roughly 25 years always using a whole bottle each time when it was mainly just to cover up grey and regrowth. Never thought to mix just enough for regrowth and get a few uses from one bottle. This is gonna save me alot of time and money! One happy Maori Māmā! Have just subscribed so looking forward to watching more of your awesomeness soon 🌻
Yay! And yes it's a game-changer when you get a few colours out of one box. I try and get four so it only costs me about $5 to cover my regrowth - winning! :)
Thank you for the lovely tips and you telling us how and teaches how to do things right in this life thank you very much! Love it!
You are so welcome!
I discovered the chapstick trick by accident. lol. I didn't have any vaseline around, so I just used some very plain, unscented lipchap. Worked a charm for the hair bleach.
Sprite Smith so good right?
What do you do with the rest of the roots at the back of the head? This is where the challenge is, not at the front of the head!
Great video! I’m going to go try it now. Your video gave my the courage!
You can do it!
I (dip) dyed my hair at home last summer (or my mom did) and I thought it looked amazing! I mean a professional hair dresser would probably think it was horrendous but everyone else thought it was super cool😌 only it was supposed to stay in my hair for 10-20 washes but it stayed for like 100 :( Anyways I still loved it haha. This year I’m going to do pastel purple highlights! Idk if it’s going to workout but whatever😂💙
I'm here bc I'm bored of quarantine lol
Lol
Same😂😂
Love the Captick trick. I was using petroleum jelly.
very good information, thank you very much
Gorgeous! That color is so beautiful! Like you!😀
Thank you :)
Thank you so much! I have gray since I was 19! I have ruined my hair so much. Love the chapstick trick.

I love your video and style, where did you get the hair dying bowl
I love the lighter ends as well. How do you do that as well!
Love it I already use it
Jade Board yay! It's def my new favourite - the coverage is fab right?
Good job 👍
Thanks for that chapstick trick! I have been coloring my hair for years as well. Some of my friends ask as they like my hair color for some reason and they spend a lot in hair salons. P.S. I live in New Zealand too! xo
It works so well right? And yay - where are you in NZ? I'm in Auckland :)
Oh I'm in Auckland too!! Bad weather this week :D
Great tutorial , How do i color it without the redness:?
Appreciate the info...however I came to comment on your cheekbones! So lovely!
Oh gosh that's so kind - thank you :)
I’m gonna brave it, stop going to the salon and start coloring my grey roots at home like you. I think I can do it! 😀
From your profile pic it looks like you're a brunette and it's MUCH easier if you have darker hair. Just be sure not to go too dark but once you find the perfect colour you'll be away - good luck :)
If u don't mind me pls what is your product (colour) name that covered well grey hair many thnx 😍
i dyed my hair black when i was 19 I am 32 now and I have a lot of premature greying.... I want to go back to my natural color or atleast as close as I can because of the greys. what is the best advise you can give so that I don't damage my hair?
You are really pretty amazing video
Chapstick is great secret ☺️

Do you need to wash your hair first before dying your hair from the box?
Looks more you beautiful in your hair colour
Love your blonde!
Thank you :)
Love it. thanks for sharing. 4life
Thanks for watching!
New friend
I love to watch women who have been dying their hair so easy. It can become a real mess when gloves get colour on them! Hoping you get all roots and hair evenly. It can be a real chore. Later, it's worth it, to look great!
My hairs were totally okay but I want to colour it so it is harmful or not? To colour your hair jus only for get a new colour?
Omy! I really love your accent, especially when you say 'heir' instead of 'hair' 😱❤️
Lol is that how I say hair? 🤦🏻♀️😊😂
yeah, but it sounds really cool tho 🤭😎
Gwen Mjs 🙊 Thx 😊
You look so beautiful mashallah 🌹🌹
Thank you :)
how do you know how much of each bottle (colour and activator I guess) to mix? What is the ratio-does it matter?
Dana S I roughly use a two to one ratio when I mix it. I add the colour first and then add half as much developer. Even tho the quantities aren't exact I've never had a problem. Hope this makes sense.
The Style Insider. Yes, makes perfect sense- thank you so much 😊
Kudos for the Video! Sorry for butting in, I would love your opinion. Have you heard about - Millawdon Goodbye Gray Trick (search on google)? It is an awesome exclusive product for learning how to reverse gray hair fast minus the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my old buddy Taylor after many years got cool success with it.
Yes it does
Of course it’s chemistry
When you are using only part of the product to get 4 out of the box - how much of each? I did not know you could save opened product. Thx!
I just eyeball it to be honest and I've never had a problem. Usually one bottle contains more product than the other so that is the ratio I mix. I kind of do half half and then add a little more of the product that contains more if that makes sense?
Hi loved the way you have shown how to colour your hair at home, a couple of questions though, do you not do an allergy test 48 Hours before you colour your hair as advised??? Also whenever I have purchased a permanent colour it says to use the mix and never keep any over, is it because you only mix a small amount you get away with it???
I don't do the allergy test because I've been using the same few products for years but if you're concerned you should definitely do it. I think they mean that if you have already mixed the colour you can't keep any leftover. If you've only used a part of what came in the tubes then that is fine. Hope that makes sense.
Went for it, did use your trick of only mixing down half the quantity so I now have enough to touch up the front at a later date.
Because theirs equal weight of both I just weighed half 25 grams of both.
Have enough for two more applications.
Brilliant, looks great and not too dyed, thanks again
Alexandra Stevens awesome 👏🏻
Wait, you save the leftover opened containers to remix and use in the future?
I want to know how to do an ombre color on my locs
Very nice
Thanks
Do you use a different color on your ends? If so please share how you do that... It's beautiful!!
Yes please what is that colour?
Hello i have one quest.. My girlfriend i want to color hes hairs for Brown to 12.83 code ... But with color remove dont works in hai and stays Brown..
What i must to do?
Thanks
Very endearing accent 😊😊
Thanks :)
Has this damaged your hair at all or made you prone to more split ends? I'm very interested to try & dye my hair at home but I'm totally prone to split ends & I'm worried I'll damage it!
No it doesn't effect my ends at all :)
How do you do the back
The topic should have been touch up 😒
I have orange color old day wich color shuld I day now to remove the orang and go blond
*_-who else is trying to get a glow up for school?-_*
_me! i am!_
My hair is pretty thick and black or just dark brown and I am planing on dying my hair white if you or anyone could give some advice on what do that would be appreciated than you in advance have a great day
Try to,find a salon and hairdresser from someone who already has, done this to,someone with your color, hair bec it is very tricky and from very dark to white or ash blonde requires more1,than onembleaching session with 30,or 40,volume peroxide...this can FRY your hair I mean it can cause huge damage. YOu can learn to do,touchups yourself. It is,going to be pricey but better that than have to cut, youmhair,to,an inch allover! Please also watch Heidi onmUA-cam...her Olaplex videos you will, want the salon to USE Olaplex 1 when bleaching to,control damage and Olaplex 2 right after the bleach...this helps repair some broken hair bonds then you will want to usat home Olaplex 3 as an at home treatment. ALl,this is pricey even when you do it yourself the product is pricey so it is a commitment of time and money that you want to think, about carefully. IN the USA you can order Olaplex 3 a thing bottle that lasts a month or so for 30.US...the Olaplex 1,2,3 hairdressers, kit you can also find on Amazon sometimes for 250.USD so you see how pricey it is but it makes the difference between highly frizzy damaged hair and much less so.
This is what I pay a fortune for at the hairdressers. What product would you advise for blond curly (dry) hair .. see profile pix.
Thanks for your question Karla. Would you be wanting to touch up your roots or colour your entire head? And are you in New Zealand?
Really just touching up those nasty old greys .. as it grows it obviously grows out along the hair. A couple of times a year I get foils to break the colour up. Yes I am in NZ.
How does one tint roots dark without affecting or colouring highlighted or balayage ends without excess dye sticking to ends?
The dark colour only touches the lighter ends when I'm rinsing it out which isn't long enough to effect the lighter ends if that makes sense :)
but your hair is lightened on the ends. was this done separately at the hairdresser?
Hi Sheridan I go to the hairdresser once a year and get some lighter pieces added and then I just retouch my roots :)
Your pretty
omg you're so pretty
Oh thank you :)
Mne sa to zdá byť divné
I want to know the colour of your hair
I'd like to know how you manage to colour the back of your hair
This is exactly what I also said. Not difficult at the front of the head, this video is quite disappointing.
I want to hear the stories of those 132 dislikes... maybe some pictures too!
What's the color of your hair in the lower part?
Sorry I'm really not sure as I get a balayage about once a year at the salon to create the slightly lighter ends :)
The antibreakage stuff actually distroyed my hair. I had to go to a salon and get a deep conditioner treatment and hair cut
What antibreakage stuff Mimi?
I am 46 yrs. I got the gray hair problem. I do colour within 2 to 3 weeks 😥
You really should patch test 24 hours before !!
Would you ever consider going silver? As you know there is a whole movement going on ie. Gwenth Paltrow etc..
I'm not sure tbh but I'd never say never :)
Hiya where do you get your brushes and bowl from pls.
I get them from a hairdressing supply store in our local mall. You can also usually buy them in your local pharmacy too :)
The Style Insider which mall and shop please?
Ulta Beauty carries them if you have one where you live.
Sallys is a good place also.
When touching up your roots, you say that one box can give you a few applications and to only use what you need. How much of the dye do you measure out for each application?

You sound like New Zealand people
D.C.C lol 😂 I live in New Zealand 👍🏻
is that colour your signature lipstick??
Oh it probably is my signature lipstick. I also tend to wear a brighter lipstick when I'm filming videos so I don't look too washed out LOL :)
Lovely accent :)
Emma Strömberg 🙊 thx
you sound just like ann reardon
Sprite Smith funny I just had to google who she was and found her channel which is great. We’re both Australian which explains why we sound alike. Thx for introducing me to a cool new YT channel 👍🏻
ur first man or man
.. although your thumbnail was click bait a bit..😉
Hey,Lady you are a double of the actress Diane Lane.
Oh that’s funny 😁
This is a cover grey tutorial not ombre highlights as indicated by the thumbnail
Does it work peopls???😃
Future millie Bobby Brown
I don't get it
I’m still scared!

bsh i have that picture on the thumbnail.
Edit: *NO HARM INTENDED*
Wow, the Pic that Google shows is not AT ALL accurate. Idk if you choose that or not, but not cool. 😒
at 5:19 she says the color is even but it is not. the ends of the hair are clearly lighter than the upper half, with the darkest where the application,(s) are most recent. not realistic. if she had said this was UK intentional, i would.bd okay to trust her judgement. but i have eyes. and that is just untrue.
You are applying hair color wrong....because hair color never should apply from roots..
Pic on the thumbnail is absolute click bait
So, it means that you don't to go to salon for doing 'this'? Ok, thanks.
WHY CANT I SEE REPLYS?? IS ANYONE ELSE HAVING THIS???
Don’t ANWSER that bc you will probably not even be able to reply to my comment lol
I replied
Whos here because of Covid-19?
