Hi Vince, just so you know, MDF is a wood product (Medium-Density Fiberboard), the sort of thing cheap furniture or work bench tops are made from. The foam you're using is actually XPS (Extruded Polystyrene) foam.

I appreciate how you talk about your thinking, and bringing some science to help achieve realism.
What this really needs is an update with a flyby of the board in action. Learning and watching the board being created without seeing it on display is anticlimactic

Them cobblestones are rediulous... The brown ones mixed into the blue/grey ones look really good. I love the whole board, honestly its amazing!
I would like to see more terrain videos, maybe on individual stuff like how to paint a wall, or how to paint a house. I know theres a lot already online but would be nice to see your take on it.

Great vid as usual,on the protecting foam from rattle cans, a coat of PVA glue does the job and it's cheap😉. You can make a cheap static grass applicator with a metal sieve and a large capacity battery like those ones they sell for torches with the two doing contacts, just connect the sieve to one contact and run a wire with a probe to the other and job done it's not pretty but it's fine for small amounts like you need😀

@@VinceVenturella There are a good number of DIY build videos on youtube, of varying quality; but it's worth knowing that, if you're basing your cost assessment on the Noch model, there are others on the market - the Peco model is about 1/3 the price and there are some Chinese models out there closing on 10% (depending on the deals you're able to get - but a quick Google search on UK prices shows the Noch at £140+ and a Chinese model on eBay at £16...)

yes, it's a video thats not very new, but for the grass, just use a squeezer bottle, this one u use for cleaning the airbrush, just remove the straw. if the bottle is the right material, it will load up the grass static. just put a finger on the straw hole, shake it well (load it up) and then turn it up side down, and press the grass through the hole. Every plastik bottle schould do this, and if not, use a fur, and rub the bottle with it... like a balloon and hair, you know the effect. cheap and easy, and please excuse my english, I'm just a german guy with school englisch.

This was a great video. Really helps me grasp how to my my first display board. But I have questions, what filament did you use the 3d print the buildings and what did you do to get them painted? It feels like you didn't really go into detail on how the buildings were prepped and painted. As for filament, I'd like to know because I know PLA is at risk of melting in a hot car, so I don't want to spend alot of time and money on something thats going to melt to a puddle in the summer heat.

About to jump into something like this and I will be working mostly from your video here. Had a quick question - I'd heard that sometimes enamel spray paints attack foam? Is this not the case with the pink foam, or did you just cover everything really well with spackle, sand, and rocks? Thanks much for all your work!

So I had a hobby question about my display board ive been working on since january. (Started with a few hobby related NY resolutions) I wasn't sure where you preferred to be messaged about such things, but this seems like an appropriate place. I'm to the point where I want to pour resin as water to make a pool of souls into my board. I want to have Skulls suspended in the water with wisps of color trailing from them. I don't want the...acrylic? oil? wash? dye? ink? to spread out too much into the resin and just be a blob of color instead of a trailing wavy line. I'm listening to your Failure video right now and I really want to have "Prior Planning Preventing Poopy Product" (paraphrase) since i've sunk so much time into this one. So the question(s)
Is there a certain time in the resin curing process that is best for suspending objects?"
Do i have to do a layer, let it cure, place skulls, do another layer?
Would a two layer process be visible/does that even matter?
Is there a certain time in the resin curing process that i would be able to dab color onto end of toothpick or something to not have it spread out into color blob?
What type of paint should I use to create the trailing souls/wisps behind the skulls?
hahah sorry if this is too much, but an answer to any of them would very much ease the anxiety of finishing the last of my hobby resolutions. (sculpting and casting couldn't do much damage if i messed up)

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 роки тому +1

No issue and yes, you have the right answer. Occasionally I facebook I will see these multi-pouring videos were people paint "fish" in water or whatever through multiple pours. So what you would do is something like the following.
      1) Pour 1/3rd of your space.
      2) Let it mostly cure
      3) Push a skull gently into the layers
      4) Let it dry completely.
      5) Paint the energy trails with standard acrylic paint
      6) Pour another 1/3rd
      7) Repeat 2-5
      8) make the final pour
      Hope that helps.

I know this is a new comment on a very old video, but I assume that when entering a display board for an AoP-style competition, all the terrain would have to be scratch-built or GW-sourced? VS going to a regular non-gw sponsored tournament where this display board would be more common.

26:56 Draw the rest of the owl. Just kidding, great video I guess I'd just love to see more of the in-between steps, even if they're rehashed techniques from older content. There's something to be said for getting reps in of watching a talented artist at work. For example (and perhaps I'm in the minority here but I know there's an audience for it) I could watch you glaze for over an hour while you're just sort of "BSing". In fact, some of my favorite videos you've done are the ones where you're just pushing paint around on a model and having fun because I'm getting those visual reps in and learning but at the same time it's not boring because you're fun to listen to. Anyways, I'm just being a spoiled brat but if you ever decided you wanted to go over some of the bigger concepts in miniature painting in that sort of a format, consider me signed up.
