Vince, I've been figure painting on and off for around 15 years. I've never taken it super seriously which I'm now attempting to change. I cannot express how beneficial your videos have been. This more than any other shows that you're creating tutorials for 'how to be a better painter' rather than technique specific stuff. Higher level concepts like which technique to use when, colour theory and transitions, how to effectively combine techniques etc are all things you learn through experience (and largely trial and error) but you sharing these with everyone is hugely beneficial. I love this style of tutorial where you go through the strengths and weakness of each style, I find it more informative that separate tutorials for each. Oh, I really like watching you use your palette....can you try and keep it in frame in future tutorials? That was one of the things I liked so much about Painting Buddha's tutorials.
I am going to try, I can't do the 2 camera set-up, so this is probably as good as it gets, at least for now. :)
I would like to see a video about using the wet pallet. It may be a short a simple one. I've found that moving from a regullar pallet to wet has some learning curve. Using it is not only somehow different. There are techniqus for thinning and mixing paint that you can do only with wet pallet. I had to figure them out from expriencing and watching the glimps of the wet pallet on painting tutorial videos.
I will add it to the list. Good suggestion.
I can do nice primes , dry brush , stipple and improving my highlights and were to put them ect. I am struggling with learning how to glaze / blend , iv done wet blending but im determined to learn this glazing / blending. Thanks so much for your video's man they have helped me so much.

Vince Venturella Glazing is my favorite, got some Glaze medium and Retarder medium to test with my Vallejo paints. Noticed when I do very thin glazes with just water the paint dries super fast on my brush, think a bit of glaze medium will stop the paint from drying so fast.

A very helpful video, a smooth blend is always tricky for me to pull off but your advice goes a long way. BTW I can remember when GW very briefly had the Ogres with a pale green skin tone, shortly after Shriek came out but never again! A ruddier skin tone works best for Ogres.
I like either ruddy skin or straight blue (I have some ice ogres as chaos ogres for my Tzeentch army and I like that as well. :) )

There was a question from a new painter on reddit some time ago asking about the difference between spit and void blending and the thread got filled with some wild responses. I felt kinda like that guy when digging through UA-cam to learn techniques early on. I love our UA-cam community but sometimes my only criticism is that we all get hung up on the tutorial and not the painter. I don’t mean that to sound flip but I know plenty with fine arts degrees that never thought about the terminology in their approach. Point being, instead of saying “should we glaze, wet blend, void etc..?” The question should be in my opinion... what consistency should our paint be and what’s the most suitable way to apply it? I suggested him watching kommets paint and a lot of people were adamant on loaded brush being too advanced. I don’t buy it. There’s always a mix of opinions on the skill someone should learn next but videos like these, where a new painter can see somebody push paint around in different ways, I feel is far more helpful than a 6 part synopsis of different techniques. I reference the old one you did with the cape quite often and I enjoyed this one just as much. Kudos
I agree, it's easy to get lost in the technique and forget the real purpose and how we can just blend them together.

What is your favorite type of paper to use on your wet palate. So far I've tried WAX and PARCHMENT. Both seem to work pretty well. I was wondering if you had a favorite type/brand?
Reynolds Parchment baking paper - wax doesn't allow the water to properly soak through I have found.
What are you doing when you "void your brush?" Thanks for the video and clear explanation and examples.
Licking it clean or mostly clean. Sometimes I just press it into my tongue and drag a little to water it down. It's something you either don't mind or are soundly against. If you don't want to lick your paint, then a wet sponge near your painting area you lightly drag across can achieve the same thing.
He does what all painters do but never show on camera, the licking of the brush, it's a big no no but everyone does it ha ha

You didn’t mention layering throughout the video. Is that a personal choice or that you don’t consider it as a technique to achieve smooth blends?
Thank you, that is greatly appreciated. It's not a technique I really think achieves smooth blends unless you are making nearly invisible incremental steps. I know there are some great painters that use layering, but then they usually use some of these techniques over the top to smooth them together. In the end, you should use the technique that works for you, and I have just never found layering to be truly smooth.

Vince you are an amazing tutor! Having worked my way through the hobby cheating series over the past few weeks I have learned so much from them (and I believe previously shared this with you lol!) however there were a few blank spots where I wasn't 100% on actually attempting the techniques myself. This has now filled in those areas and I now feel a lot more confident in going back to my test mini.
Oh after watching your review over on your Product Reviews on the Daler and Rowney FW inks I've sent off for a few of them to get me started. I was wondering though are they glossy like the Scale 75 inks or a matt finish like the Vallejo inks?

They are mostly matte, I have found a few colors with a shine, but most are quite matte. Glad to help as always.

Thanks for this video, Sir! This really helped me get the concept of wet blending more clearly in mind. Question: Are you using masking tape on your brush to get a better grip, for comfort, or to help protect it?
Actually, the masking tape is bcause I am an idiot. I was using Winsor and Newtown Brush cleaner and left the brush slightly to low in that, which meant that the plastic melted and it wouldn't dry, so I had to put tape over it to be able to still use it. :)

tried wet blending today on a test model. failed overall but i had some small sucesses. will be following the techniques here very closely tomorrow

Great video as normal. I am having trouble with my drybrushing after shade an area with Agrax Earthshade or Nuln Oil. The effect turns out chaulky. Will highlighting via drybrushing and then using a shade smooth out the transition?
So drybrushing will produce a chalky result if the bristles are hard or too much paint is deposited or you push to hard. My best advice is a very soft bristled brush and a very light touch. That being said, you are exactly correct, a light shade (or any glaze for that matter) can really go a long way to remove that chalky result.

Sure, you need much less smooth blending the smaller the area. If you want to see my techniques in action on an orc face, go toward the end of this video and you can see how I do it with an orc face as that is what i am painting here - ua-cam.com/video/QcnAyDGUA1E/v-deo.html
For void blending, can you use a second brush that's loaded with simply water, or something like a glaze medium?
Absolutely you can, you can also just wipe your brush on a wet towel if you don't want to void the paint.

I think they are fine, they are far from my favorite, but there is nothing inherently wrong with them.

Super behind the times but just wondering how you get the flesh tone applied after the zenithal? Is it a thinned down airbrush of flesh or brushed on? Just starting with airbrushing and struggling a little! Love your videos mate.
Thank you sir and happy to help. The answer is generally a simple base coat with the airbrush, but it depends on the size of the surface. I prefer a nice thin two glazes of a mid-tone skin tone over the zenithal to start, and then go with the various methods outlined here. The smoother the surface of the skin the better, hence the preference for the airbrush, but it;s not essential.

@@davidbates7279 Your mid-tone skin tone + a few drops of vallejo airbrush thinner. That's all you need (assuming you are using an air paint) if a full paint, a little more thinner and a few drops of water.
do you recommend dry brush > layer > galze? or just go straight to glaze after dry brush?
Whatever works for that surface, I don't drybrush every surface and I don't layer or glaze every surface, If you have a large flat surface, you likely go from layering straight to glazes, if you have a heavily textured surface, you likely go drybrush into maybe some glazes to set some hue changes etc.
I wanted to invest in an airbrush until someone told my wife it would give a dust allover the house! I hate dusting lol.
QUESTION... Is it better to blend from light to dark or dark to light tones to get an ultra smooth transition?

Either can work just fine, though I will say, as I mention here, it's much easier to glaze and feather darker more transparent colors. So having more light and then working down can mek your life easier.
Hey Vince, you mentioned at 1:50 that the basic requirements for having an airbrush is a bit of space and $100. I really want one, but I also don't understand the difference between cheaper and expensive airbrushes and whether a cheap airbrush is even worth the money. Which budget models or brands would you recommend?
JUst your standard generic Master G22 that comes in the starter kit is your best bet for an absolute beginner. The reality is, you're going to screw up your first airbrush (not a judgement, I certainly wasn't great to mine and broke it pretty bad) and then you're only out like $20 to replace it. Learn with that, get your basics down and then look at a bigger investment like an Iwata HP-CS.

What are you doing at 9.20 to 9.26? Adding water to the brush while having flesh color on the brush and then wiping excess water of on a "wipiee" or ?
Yes, I just touched the tip VERY lightly to the water and then touched a wet part of a paper towel to thin it down.
@@VinceVenturella Ok, brilliant. Thank you. Do you keep clean water for each such thining as not to pollute the color loaded in the bristles? I'm asking because I'm used to using hard pallets with wells and I'm trying to get used to how to thin paints on a wet palette. If I do so with a drop of water onto the drop of paint and then mix them on the palette I get it over a large area of the palette.

In general, you shouldn't eat paint, I do it, but I don't recommend it to others. A wet sponge will get you to the same place.

Honestly, as one brand no, though there are certainly some individual paints in the lines are better than others.
When I apply my Golden heavy body Titanium White to my wet pallet it curdles. Have you experienced this?

@@VinceVenturella Something I realized is that at one point I tried putting white vinegar in my pallet to fight the mold. That was a bad idea. I need to try this again to see if those two things happened at the same time.
Let me rule that out first.
How to void brush without licking the paint Vince ?, rinse it into the water or wipe it off on a paper ?
A wet sponge in your area in a plastic small tupperware you can wipe across the top of or touch your paint to. That will simulate the same thing as your tongue is doing.

Yep, same thing. Two brush blending also is the same thing but with a second moist brush.
Would i literally need to buy "glaze medium" or could i use my "liquatex matte medium" for vallejo paint glazes? Like, one part vallejo pait to one part matte medium to however much water?
Could i make a small bottle of "glaze medium" out of my matte medium, water and i also have flow improver. I guess i f i have to i will buy glaze medium but i have a HUGE bottle of matte medium.
No, you could certainly do exactly as you describe and that would be just fine.
Interesting technique, but dont you have as much paint on your tongue as on your model?
I'm wiping a fair amount on a wet paper towel before I put it in my mouth, but yeah, I end up eating paint. You can rely completely on a wet paper towel if you don't want to eat paint.
What paper are you using on your wet palette? I have the Masterson wet palette,also. I have used their brand of paper,and the Reynolds folded version. The Masterson version is too thick,and the Reynolds curls too much. How is yours staying flat?
I use Reynolds Kitchens Genuine Parchment paper and I have never had an issue with it curling. Make sure that your sponge is nice and wet (pretty much saturated), then run water over the parchment before you lay it onto the sponge. Use a flat edge to smooth out the paper so that all of the bubbles are gone and the edges are flush with the sponge. As long as you keep your wet palette sufficiently loaded with water, the edges shouldn't curl. If they do, just add some more water and smooth them back down.

Hi. Your paint layer needs to be a little bit shorter than your sponge. that will prevent drying up at the edge so it wont warp/curl.
Can't vouch for Citadel but Vallejo definitely has enough pigment to thin down to a glaze.
Oh certainly, most any paint can glaze, and medium really helps. It's a question of how pigment rich the paints are where you can break them down to very thin and control your glazes without tide marks. Ironically, this is one of the places where model color actually outperforms game color.
@@VinceVenturella The more saturated the color, the more translucent the paint... and VGC has more saturation generally than VMC. :)
Could someone define for me, in one sentence, what 'void blending' is?
I talk about it in some other videos, but basically, it's much like feathering. It's when you are adding a large amount of paint, then using a mostly dry brush to remove and smooth the paint on the mini, constantly pulling paint away. Think of it as a smoothing and subtractive process like you would do with oil paints.
Are you voiding out the brush in your mouth?
I am, I eat paint quite often, don't recommend it, but if you want a similar effect, just keep a wet sponge next to your working space and draw it along.

And couldn't you wipe the brush on your parchment paper rather than eating the paint.

So if you don't want to eat the paint (which is understandable), then what you should do is keep a folded paper towel in your work area and make sure it's moist to quite wet. When you need to soften or water a little, you can lightly touch or wipe your brush across the wet area of the paper towel. Has the same effect but no need to eat paint.

It's just a fantastic warm shadow color and has been used on several of my projects recently, so it's at the top of mind.

Well, I made him very red to show up on screen, but the start just didn't have enough contrast. You could certainly shift the colors and keep to more normative shadows. :)
