In the seventies, my older sister was the head of the concessions at the arena in Binghamton. In those days, the top bands used to play there regularly. She arranged for me to be a “runner” working for the road crew throughout the day. They needed a local boy, like me, who knew his way around town, and could perform such mundane tasks as picking up duct tape. One of the perks was that they would pay me a couple of hundred bucks, and I could be backstage for the concerts. I recall being on the back of the stage, mid-afternoon, while the band was practicing this song. Jerry Garcia didn’t arrive until much later, but Bob Weir kept stopping and repeating the opening. They struck me as being very normal guys and serious musicians.

before Long, there wiLL have been diamonds and prisms glowing from light, that push colors forth unseen by naked eyes Yet felt by those who reach out to grab its mystical fire, burning hot like sunshine or embers from an eternal Flame...

I was there! Capitol Theatre and Roosevelt Stadium in NJ were the "armpit[s| of the universe" as my friend used to say. The Capitol Theare used to have a sign outside "Healthfully Air Conditioned" Yeah, your own sweat trying to cool you down! Still, The Dead could put on a great show anywhere!! Kudos to Bob Weir providing the reggae rhythm on this song!!

Roosevelt Stadium was by far much worse than the Capitol Theater, which was simply the Beacon but on the other side of the Hudson River.

Unreal solo. Love the Mutron. Then Jerry puts in about 24 notes the last 2 seconds of it..

This song has more depth than 9000 seasons of American idol, the voice, and America's got talent....

      Estimated and Loser
Easily my favorites.. Bob in Estimated at his peak, 70 odd thousand people going nutso and Jerry's solos on later versions of Loser. Top shelf stuff indeed..

My time coming, any day, don't worry about me, no
Been so long, I felt this way
    I'm in no hurry, no
Rainbows and down that highway where ocean breezes blow
My time coming, voices saying they tell me where to go
Don't worry about me, nah, nah, nah
    Don't worry about me, no
And I'm in no hurry, nah, nah, nah
    I know where to go
California, preaching on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know, I'm gonna shine
My time coming, any day, don't worry about me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin' slow
Still I know I lead the way, they tell me where I go
Don't worry about me, nah, nah, nah
    Don't worry about me, no
And I'm in no hurry, nah, nah, nah
    I know where to go
California, a prophet on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine
You've all been asleep, you would not believe me
Them voices tellin' me, you will soon receive me
Standin' on the beach, the sea will part before me
Fire wheel burning in the air
You will follow me and we will ride to glory
Way up, the middle of the air
And I'll call down thunder and speak the same
And my work fills the sky with flame
And might and glory gonna be my name
And men gonna light my way
My time coming, any day, don't worry about me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin' slow
My time coming, any day, don't worry about me, no
Don't worry about me, nah, nah, nah
    Don't worry about me, no
And I'm in no hurry, nah, nah, nah
    I know where to go

The late 70s were THE BEST the Grateful Dead had.
