No one mentions Bob Weir's incredible, haunting slide playing on this tune. Dude is so underrated as a compliment to Garcia's melodic genius. Such a wonderful pair on guitar, and this is a badass rendition of one of my favorite Jerry sung GD songs. NFA!
that is f****** the best Althea version ever recorded & I 've been to 57 shows. He literally tears the heart out of that guitar & your emotional heart as well.....
I got into the dead about 2-3 years ago and have become a massive super fan. In the last few months, I have done a deep dive on Brent's time in the Dead and man oh man.... changed everything for me... hard to enjoy the experience at a D and C show after seeing some of these performances on youtube...
It's one perfect song, in each note and word, a kind of unity/convergence/communion. Whenever Jerry's on, he's the totally humble servant the music, to the muse; he just disappears down the rabbit whole and takes the band and us with him. First saw the band in 72; regret that I didn't see them more (just 2 more times). I've spend more time in the past 6 months listening to their studio and (mostly) live recordings than I did in the previous 40 years, and it's been bringing those big goofy smiles to my face---yeah...they WERE kind, they still are, and their music is just as precious now as it was then.
Was staying near Alpine Valley at the summer home of my wife's family. Older son was four, younger boy just a few months old. And my sweet wife surprised me for my birthday, handing me a ticket for this concert. She stayed home with the kids, and I caught perhaps the best Dead concert of the 20 or so times I saw them beginning in 1971. My wife and I met at a Dead concert freshman year of college. What a wonderful evening, weather and music perfect.
Love it. What GREAT ENERGY this band had. Always loved the twin drummers and how their styles complemented each other. The late great Jerry Garcia's prowess never ceases to amaze me.
@danross5060 never heard it. I know the old pig pen fans didn't like Brent as I really don't the older stuff, every one hates change I guess. Changes aren't permanent but change is ✌️😎✌️
Put this in your pipe and smoke it!!! F*cking brilliant. I went to the 4th of July in Buffalo ("Truckin' Up to Buffalo"), Alpine (two nights after the "Downhill From Here" show), and Raleigh, amongst other places. It was so special and we knew it. Thank you, thank you for posting this!
There’s not one “jam band” guitarist I can stand for more than a short solo than Jerry. His notes made you happy, made you want to dance! Then you did dance....it’s begun. ✌🏻
At 1 min 3 seconds in you hear that first Haunting rhythm tone from Bobby and it you know this one is gonna be special. It literally set the bench mark, and everyone else on stage showboated right along but it blends so well and the groove remains so smooth. This is another example of 89' dead perfection 👌.
100% right by me; Brent was the best. Always sad when I see the pix of his kids on the keys, don't understand it, but it is what it is. Glad to not judge and accept that life is often difficult.
This is so damn ripping!! The way Jerry launches his whole body into the solo at the end of each verse is about as animated as he got since maybe the early 70’s. He was going into one of his last runs, and indeed one of his best, from about ‘89-‘92. So glad I got to be a small part of it.
Love this song. I was a couple of years into the Dead when Go to Heaven came out, the first studio album since I got on the bus. A local alt weekly gave GTH a tepid review, and singled out Althea as "a lot of pointless noodling". For the longest time I thought I was the only one who loved this song. So glad to see this placed among the canon of great Jerry tunes!
do any of you children like to dance? well, I heard this song a few times and I was dancin' like it was 1969 all over again!! this song brought tears of happiness and sadness all at once. something about this tune brings the 'human' outta me. i'm totally in a dimension all my own and me and the Dead are the only ones with a key...or invitation
I named my cat for this song... I put the lyric "Movin' with a pinch of grace" on her tag before I discovered what a klutz she is. XD Only heard it once in concert (Buckeye Lake '94) but it's always been a favorite, all stately and sinuous and sensual. The absolute, unbridled joy that went up my spine when I heard that opening riff was a genuine life experience I will always treasure.

Jerry is one of those very rare guitar players who I recognize after just a coupla notes. I can recognize his guitar as easily as his voice. Carlos Santana and Keith Richards are guitarists I quickly recognize..but not so much the voice. Althea is a great song; it reminds me of Cold Rain and Snow. I love the line "...and now I'm trying to catch her." Jerry died in 1995 but he truly does live on.
My parents aren't Dead fans but I guess in college he decided he was too cool for a while and left her hanging and then had to Try and catch her which I think is pretty cool
Yeah Farz is right- if you realize your twin flame is you. If you realize a God is you. If you realize you are entirely reaponsible for all beings- then yes of course- it is a conversation of unity. Love.
This is the best Althea I've ever heard or seen!!! Thanks for putting it on here. Althea's always been my favorite song by my favorite band!!! So maybe my favorite song of all time! I was lucky enough to see Jerry & the boys play it 7 times total; between 12/89 to 12/94. (Favorite song has to be: either Althea or Shakedown!)(Or: Time or Learning to Fly ; by Pink Floyd)It's hard to pick a favorite song of all time!!!
Bittersweet, but my fave Jerry tune since 11 Aug '95. My brother (not a head) and I were making the turn through the club house. Rare for me to be hanging with my brother, much less playing golf, but it was my birthday. We saw the news on the ticker. 2 days later I'm rolling down the road listening to a tape and when Anthea came on I shed some tears. Years later when Tom Petty passed my brother emailed me and said, I knew it was a big deal for you, but not as much as I do now.
87 - 89 Alpine. What a party! Alpine placed hundreds of stacks of fork lift crates though out massive parking areas. Leaving the show, at the gates on top of hill, you could see large fires everywhere reflecting light on the clouds. What a night! Of course, they threw us out after 89.
It's actually an amazingly animated jerry for this time period. I was on tour during this time and he had his good. Ights and bad nights. This one was stellar
I remember when the entire 7/19/89 show was available on youtube. And without commersh. That's how old I am. Wow. The first set of 7/19/89 is better than the 2nd set. Top 3 Altheas. Dirty West LA. So fun. So fun first set. All love.
The band was on freakin fire all three nights at the greatest summer venue for shows and camping. this was probably one of the last summer tours with camping on site. Even though it rained buckets and made it a slippery place we survived and were blessed with these three gems . Enjoy as these bring back nothing but great memories.
My personal Favorite Dead Song.Jerry KILLS THIS.The band Were on top of THEE WORLD AT THIS TIME.MUSICALLY TIGHTER THAN EVER.THIS WAS A SMOKIN HOT TOUR 89 ROCKED.
Thanks Barbara ( babs) for bringing me to see the dead in L.A. '94. I just made it and was hooked from the start. I got to see the dead 5 times and the other bands since. I would still be listening to metallica and goo goo dolls feel me?
There is no such thing as a "best" Grateful Dead song. Having said that, Althea is truly one of the all time greats. A wonderful edgy, kinda dark, totally rockin', guitar scorching, a little scary Grateful Dead original. I just plain love Althea!!
I read your comment and thought, 'gee I wonder what that looked like?' Then I scrolled back up at the video and much to my surprise it was at 8:15 and then BOOM! Nice call by you and good timing by me, the Dead, the Universe and the song.
I often have felt that this was my favorite Dead song too, but its so hard to pin it down to just one. It certainly would be in any of my top 5 or top 10 for sure 100% . And I am with you as far as the later stuff, I think right about here they really hit a peak. Strange, now that I am relistening to it while responding to you, it occurs to me that somewhere I do have a juicy Alpine Valley boot on cassette tape, and it just might have this very Althea. I guess I will have to look thru the boxes of tapes later, Cheers!

Attended all three shows in AV rained every night. Helicoptered to the shows and back with the band and my friend Bill W. was on this tour. at these shows. lots of rain, good x. i was hoping the fare thee well shows would have been in alpine. 3 more nights camping there would be really sweet.
Check out 1981-03-28 -Gruga Halle (Rockpalast) definitely my favorite version, and I've listened to about 60 different versions. The solo at the end is epic.

Ian Mirmelstein agreed
agreed!
I third that agreement. I was there that night. Fantastic show.
@@jimsmith1277 Same here 3 absolutely amazing nights. Bobby was ripping all 3 nights but this slide on Althea blew me away.

Damn right,,this at 83
For sure. Goosebumps!
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good. Jerry is spot on...

It literally is one of the best songs ever made.
Can't beat the Hunter-Garcia songs.

i smile cry every time I hear this. its as close to magic as iv ever been.
so good; in 2019 as it was in '89. Miss Jerry, but his music lives.
"His music lives" is probably the best tribute any musician can hope to get.
The emotion in Jerry's voice and guitar playing send a shiver down the the spine.
Woohoo My Fav Dead tune I'm 62 from NY I now live in Germany for the last 10 ( zehn) Jahre
great stuff.. Althea is actually one of the few Dead tunes where I like the studio version as much as any live version, its so crisp and clear
That or ripple

You should be "Althea H"
Awe yer just a kitten
You make me feel so old. I was there that night. I even remember this particular excellent performance of Althea. Great show.
A mighty fine day/night we had on your birth. Alpine Valley was freakin magical
“To die, to sleep - to sleep, perchance to dream - ay, there's the rub, for in this sleep of death what dreams may come…” (Hamlet)
Jerry is the man & lives on even in our children & our children's children. He's a LEGEND. I will never talk about him in past tense (~);}
While John Meyer fills your shoes admirably, Jerry, very simply no other like you: still missing you here in 2024!

I was at this show. Still have my ticket stub. Great summer shows at Alpine valley.
80s dead by far my favorite
100% right by me; Brent was the best. Always sad when I see the pix of his kids on the keys, don't understand it, but it is what it is. Glad to not judge and accept that life is often difficult.
Summer of '89 was magical summer at Alpine. I saw the Dead, Who and Stones that year. And it rained at this show like crazy..Great memories.
Great show, who shot this, it's well produced.
I did the mudslide on this evening, and I had pavillion seats, a little mud never hurt nobody.

The fact UA-cam allowed an ad to be placed in the middle of this masterpiece is a disgrace. Straight up weak sauce.
Straight up got an ad like 5 minutes in. UA-cam's getting greedy.

"Tighter than ever"? Apparently you never listened to the Dead in the '60s or '70s.
best band ever, old enough to have been there, as they say nothing like a grateful dead show., have to thank Mr hunter as well
Absolutely...I've seen them perform together..just JG and RH at the Chrysler Hall Center in Norfolk Va...Kudos to one hell of a collaboration !
For me it's a three way tie for greatest American bands. P-Funk, Velvet Underground, and the Dead.
this when was feeling good and he is clean here
they were on fire that spring, summer, fall, winter, into '90, up until Brents untimely passing.

ding!
There is no such thing as a "best" Grateful Dead song. Having said that, Althea is truly one of the all time greats. A wonderful edgy, kinda dark, totally rockin', guitar scorching, a little scary Grateful Dead original. I just plain love Althea!!
Admirable! I could seen 'em at the Stadium 365 in Oakland, short time before they played at the Alpine Valley music theatre.
I recently learned this on acoustic and I play it over and over and never get tired of it.
Haa, kids! I graduated high school in 1984 and saw my first show in 1982. I love sharing this music with kids; 17 and 12.
Incredible. God I miss this band and Jerry.
This one is magic

My favorite version of Althea.
Oh God, beautiful. Just beautiful.
Althea and He’s Gone should be some kind of song played at every Dead show 🙏

Phil was the perfect bassist for that band: cerebral, open-minded, well-versed. Casady was the master of tone.

That was a nasty Althea, Jerry's tone is wicked.
"Nobody messin' with you, but you."
