You Masochist, Henry, we all appreciate your sacrifice :D. Agree with a lot of your sentiments about picking a sensible level for whatever goals you have in mind, we'll be doing the same in our vid
I loved original space marine and epic. I went all in for this. Yes the miniatures are overpriced, but they look incredible. The increase from 6mm to 8 or 10 or whatever plus the better technology to make minis allow these to be so detailed. Can’t wait
Such a treat to finally see the epic stuff coming out, really looking forwards to seeing the solar auxila next week. Everybody seems to be very focused on the marines. And that night lords scheme came out really well, I think dark blue can be a little tricky.
Didn’t know I would go woah I want to do a 30k Epic scale Iron Hands army. But I do now. Iron Hands look awesome (they all look great) and I plan on replicating this scheme, thank you!
The freaking lightning round. This has to have been the fastest I’ve ever heard Henry talk. It’s incredible though. Banged out 18 very nice looking models incredibly quickly.
The orginal Iron hands scheme always translates well to any scale. The EC scheme is true to the display board. The SoH, BA, and IF are a good Hue for this scale and grimdark without being grimdark. Not sure on the Salamanders and Alpha Legion at this scale but that’s just personal preference. All are painted well and enable people to get a force on the table and gaming.
Ive been coming back to this as i paint up some Emperor's Children to kind of nail down the ideas here. Im the only one collecting Epic in my FLGS, so i cant get games. But im building up my army for next year when i go back to my hometown.
That word bearers one was amazing! Never thought of Berzerker Bloodshade as the color for Word Bearers. Definitely stealing that for Word Bearers ally detachment
Excellent video, thank you. I've painted a few Epic Armageddon models but your techniques will help immensely with Legions Imperialis. The Imperial Fists and Ultramarines turned out especially nice-the shading feels bang on for the scale. I also love the effect on the Iron Hands turned out. But most of all I'm glad to see your take on the Dark Angels, as I'm leaning toward collecting them but wasn't sure if the vehicles would look too boring. Between the highlights, the red stripe and decals, and the metallics, the results are quite stunning.
I love everything about this channel. Its so good to see such awesome painters showing how everyone can get good quality minis. I'm never a golden demon quality painter, but after watching tutorials and painting videos I can see how to have a nicely painted army.
Really like the look of the blood angels and sons of Horus schemes. I think if I paint any epic stuff I'll go for Emperor's Children, but with a bit of a darker purple than this version.
My dad used to have a very old Lord of the Ring's army at epic scale. It gave me a sense of wonder and really set off my imagination as a kid, I think because of that I've always had a fondness for epic scale miniatures. The Legions Imperialis range has triggered that same feeling in me in that they're such fantastically detailed models. I think I will most definitely being be buying an army set even if its just to paint up and admire, it'll bring back good memories of me and my dad painting miniatures together. Your painting techniques are excellent and I've been taking notes to give it my best shot.
I bet that basing "scheme" will work great as weathering as well if you just go on the tracks and bottom on the tanks as well as up the feet a bit on the dreads! Gotta say, i haven't been especially interested in Legions imperialis but this got me at least slightly warmer towards it. Might be fun to do some easy quick painting like this and weathering, bet it looks great on the table as you say.
Great video Henry! Loving the Night Lords and Sons of Horus. Love how instantly recognisable they are from 3ft away. Really pumped for this, Epic was my first intro to the hobby when I was a kid apart from Space Crusade/Hero Quest.
Totally agree. Epic (and Warmaster) are the best games GW ever released! I’d like to see your take on buildings and terrain, seeing as I’ve bought hundreds of £ worth of the stuff!
They all look great. The painting tips are great and me as a viewer I am encouraged to paint some myself lol was hoping to stay away from them. As I have many other projects to be getting on with. But has been seen can’t be unseen. Love the advice about don’t listen to anybody, sure we all agree that you guys at cult as worth listening to. Cheers
The Salamanders, Raven Guard, Blood Angels, Imperial Fists, Word Bearers, Night Lords, Sons of Horus And World Eaters look very good, the rest maybe a little simple but still very nice. Im a big fan of the World Eater one.
I hope some time in the future GW consider bringing out a W40K game to this same scale. Seeing the other races in all their fine detailed glory would be fantastic.
The scheme you used for the visors works nicely for the standard scale, I use either a pure white or light metallic like you say depending on whether I want a glow or a reflective appearance. I'm not a fan of non-metallic metals, and I think this style of visors works well with true metallic metal as there's no forced perspective. You can still edge highlight them or add a gloss varnish to give it additional flair.
It might sound a bit typical of me, I loved seeing them all haha, but for different reasons! Some like the Alpha Legion were a treat to see even if they're already familiar, besides, it's good to get a sense of how those schemes fit a smaller scale. I may answer differently if asked again but the way that blue went down for Night Lords might've stolen the show for me. I'd definitely be keen to see that upscaled in 30k or 40k, same with Iron Hands - bronze accents could liven them up! - and the Salamanders; way simpler than the beautiful finishes using a handful of greens but so effective! I'd easily go on but they all offer so much good stuff, and those sculpts seem to reward the effort too! Cheers!
They all look amazing. They genuinely look like you've just shrank 32mm models you've painted 😂 and all pretty simple schemes, the results have surprised me. Legions Imperialis was just not on my radar but these look so cool I might have to check it out
They look great! Want to start an Iron Warriors or Word Bearers force. Disappointed that they sold out so quickly, hopefully there won’t be stock issues.
GW can't seem to make up their mind on what the modern interpretation of Iron Hands actually look like in Heresy, if you have the Liber Astartes Loyalist book they have alternating schemes and styles on the same page where they display the models. I followed the updated scheme from GW and ended up with something dangerously close to Iron Warriors instead.
I really like the iron hands scheme. They are not a legion or chapter I was ever keen to paint, but that scheme has me tempted. I'd be curious to see if it works on larger scale models
Very excited for the SA - that's prolly what I'm going to start as a new army, new year project ^_^ I am curious tho, do you thnk there are any GW contrasts that work for SoH colours?
I just wanted to check in on this as i dont believe you mention it specifically: In previous videos on oil washing, you mention leaving the model in its gloss varnish state when oil washing. However in this video, they appear to have had their final varnish when you start applying the oil. If thats the case, how differenetly does the oil wash behave? I feel like it would grip more to the flat surfaces and not run into the recesses, however in the video it still seems to keep that capiliary action we're used to. Looking forward to any insight on this, if you ever see the comment
Generally the oil will always run into the recesses. But the more matte the surface is then the more it will also settle on the flat surfaces. All these minis had a matte/satin finish so it did a good job of staining them as well as running into panel lines.
I'd love to see your whole Word Bearer army in that colour scheme. I'd like to use it for mine, but I've never used an airbrush. Do you think you'd get a similar effect just using all brushes? I'm guessing the berserker bloodshade wouldn't go on as evenly.
I think id probably try and mix up a colour similar using contrast paints. Then youd get a nice scheme. So maybe fleshtearers red and one of the browns.
Simply amazing job. Can I ask where the decals came from? In particular the red World Eaters symbols? The sheet that comes in the box is black and white only.
The network effect of seeing a whole army consistently painted is the main thing, I feel bad for anyone having a single tiny 25mm base singled out and viewed way too close. As long as people keep a consistent scheme they seem to look pretty good from a wide range of painting skill/time.
@@cultofpaint Awesome, thank you for answering! The LI Core set sadly only includes transfers for a few of the legions so I´ll see if I can snag a 30k transfer sheet for blood angels.

The metalic finish models didn't look quite as good to me. Overall that was an awesome video and I'll very likely copy your Ultramarine scheme. Can't wait to see your personal army.
My turquoise over silver looked much more green... not Alpha legion at all. Not sure why it has worked so badly for me. Going to have to experiment more sadly, as I had hoped this was a nice quick option.
Why is the "18 Legions in !8 minutes"-video 32 minutes long? xD Very good video though. A really good showcase of what you can do with pre-shading/zenthals, a contrast paint and oil wash.
Is there a particular reason why you use Tamiya flat white through the airbrush instead of VMC white given it’s your favourite white? I love VMC white aswell and was planning to use this through the airbrush for my epic models so I’m really interested if there is a good reason why you go with Tamiya flat white instead? Thanks a lot
I just so happen to be off 04th Dec... I am PRAYING my stuff arrives so I have a great holiday! I am doing alpha legion. I am going to be using my GSW colourshift paint. I am so excited to get entire squads done in a few hours Oh not sure if you said... Where did you get the decals? I am looking for alphas (unsurprisingly)
Ive been using the smallest decals from the 32mm forge world decal sheet you can buy for the 32mm Horus Heresy (I’m Death Guard rather than Alpha though). I believe the smaller boxes of marine plastics all contain decals for every legion though.
90% of the decals I've used are from the LI kits, it's a really decent little sheet, with plenty for each legion plus extras. And I've added in the odd one from their respective 30k sheets.
You Masochist, Henry, we all appreciate your sacrifice :D.

Marines are marines right. But the Solar are for the true connoisseurs ;)
Hands down the best video you’ve ever put out. Cannot wait to play my first game of epic/legions

They turned out super well! Personal favourite is the blood Angel scheme, but they’re all good
Would also love to see how you’d approach painting the infantry with these schemes!

Great video. Also loving the advocacy for getting a painted army out over doing every nitty detail. Always looks better to play with painted
Absolutely brilliant video. Great to see paint jobs that are simple but still elevate the models

How are you running the contrast paints through your airbrush, are you thinning them a lot, or only a little bit? Your transition is so smooth. Mine tend to get speckling in the transition point.
I use normal Airbrush thinner and thin roughly 50/50
That was fantastic! I loved it! A question. What would be a good substitute for the Shadow Brown and Dark Brick Red 50/50 mix you used for the 1st legion? Thank you
Do you mean an alternative that isn't oil paints?
@cultofpaint No sorry, which other oil paints would be good to use?
those all look great but quick question, the washes you use are those acylic or oils? I am presuming oil but thought I would check :)
Oils
how much did you thin the contrast for the alpha legion? Terradon seems quite dark in the pot to me, but i havent tried airbrushing it yet. And also which varnish did you use to keep the metal look? Varnishing metals makes me sad haha

Satin or gloss varnish
Oil wash
Matt varnish
Hi. For a pin wash, yes.
Love this, great video. What do you think of the solar aux?
Thanks. I love them, its what I'm doing for my personal army. Will be showing some of them on next week's video.
awsome video man! What magnets do you use on minis this small?
I haven't decided yet. But if I do I think it'll be magnetic sheet cut to size.
Nice video! Where can I found those nice decals please?
The various 30k legion transfer sheets and the ones that come in the LI vehicle boxes.
Amazing video. Thanks for creating it. Could you advise which circular dry brush you are using for edge highlight brushing please?
Artis Opus Series D medium or large

Thank you for this nice video :D Concerning the base, you say that you use Dark see grey 71048. But 71048 is engine grey ? Is it a mistake ?
The name is definitely Dark Sea Grey
Great guide. Where do the decals come from?
The sheet that comes in the box, plus a few from the 30k legion sheets
Love the night lords scheme!!! What colour did you do the lenses on it?
clear red

Why is the "18 Legions in !8 minutes"-video 32 minutes long? xD
Very good video though. A really good showcase of what you can do with pre-shading/zenthals, a contrast paint and oil wash.
Favourite schemes, Emperors Children (first) , then fists then Blood angels. But they all look banging.
do you wear a mask when airbrushing Tamiya paints? or use a spray booth ?
i use a mask when airbrushing anything
Is there a particular reason why you use Tamiya flat white through the airbrush instead of VMC white given it’s your favourite white?
I love VMC white aswell and was planning to use this through the airbrush for my epic models so I’m really interested if there is a good reason why you go with Tamiya flat white instead?
Thanks a lot
Due to its solvent base and how its made the Tamiya is brilliant through the airbrush. I use it for airbrushing and vmc for normal brush.
When painting the Leviadon Blue on the Night Lords, did you spray it straight from the pot or did you thin it down any? If so, what was your ratio?
Bit of thinner, maybe 1:1
