Really appreciate the detail on the oil wash after a comment I posted on the legions video. That's answered the question and visualised it perfectly. Oil washing is one of those parts of painting I agonise over due to inexperience, and this will go a long way to helping! Genuinely one of the best channels for painting on the internet.
Lovely. I'll be coming back to this for my own army once I get the models. I'd love to see more videos as this peronal project evolves and unfolds. I've only just found your channel because of these Legions Imperialis videos. Great stuff!
Love the laid back approach to this project, very inspiring and feels achievable while being effective. I'll be coming back often and repaetedly to these vids!
Of all the books on the hobby that I'd love to have, that one's right up around the top! Those names are ingrained in my memory from back when I was first into the hobby long ago... It's great to see this approach to metals with and without metallic paints. The tanks look like they've really been through it, but are still tough and dangerous. It's also good to see this faction get such deserved attention before pivoting away from armour on the next video, looking forward to whatever it may be!
Brilliant! I love the simplicity you did and what a great result with all the extra little steps. Would love to see you do different Solar Auxilia schemes similar to what you did for the legions.
I love this paint job! I find your work really inspirational I can't wait to see the rest of the army come together over time. I'm gonna get Solar Auxilia for this game as well when I've finished my current Cities of Sigmar project! All the best to ye!
I love Warhammer but I tend to enjoy the Heresy era way more than 40k. I just bought the Legions Imperialis box and I'll be using your video as inspiration on my tanks. I love how your tanks came out.
An alternative for people who don't want to inhale the plastic fumes for a radio aerial is to go to a department/hardware store and buy a cheap dustpan and brush set with black nylon bristles. One brush will last multiple lifetimes of hobbying.
I often use bristles, as mentioned in the video. The thing I like about this technique is that you can vary the thickness easily. I found the bristlesntoo think for these tanks
absolutely love these! the scheme is great, simple but very striking! Funnily enough my first real 'intro" into WH and such was the Forge World Vol I and II as well - brought back my love for scale models and transformed it for Warhammer
Henry mate this is absolutely brilliant. I'm so pumped to pick up my preorders tomorrow and start on my solar auxillia. This video got me right in the happy feels 😎
Curses! Mine arrives in two days. I'm not sure I've been this excited for a GW release in many moons. They look amazing Henry and you've touched on all the techniques I'm looking forward to employing.
Imagine my ears perking up when you said Hull Red was your favourite paint. It's mine too! I fell in love with it like 5-6 years ago when I first painted a Khador Warjack and never looked back. It's just so versatile and beautiful. Thanks for the video, your style of painting pulled me out of a bad hobby spot and got me into trying out oil paints. Looking forward to having more hobby time (exams are a thing for me right now) and trying out mor of your techniques.
It is an absolutely beautiful tank! I will definitetly take inspiration with the logos and maybe even the main blueish-gray colur for me Legion Imperialis too :D
As a traditional military modeler (and wannabe mini painter) I always love seeing 40K and 30k armor painted in a more traditional military modeling style. Also I need to find a copy of that book… which knowing GW second hand prices will likely cost me about $10,000 😂
I am far more exited for the solar auxilia than i am for the space marines. I have this picture in my head about a tank coloumn driving through a destroyed factory and directly into an enemy titan. I will try my best to replicate it in a diorama with my minis.
It was the same book that got me back into 40K and I dived straight into a Baneblade, which in hindsight was a bit of a mistake, I should gone for one of the Russ models I had unfinished as it was a bit of big project to perfect the techniques on. The revamp of epic is going to make it much easier and this is a great scheme to base mine off.
I have no amount of skill or talent with painting, I bought that book and I learned some of those techniques for my guard army. The chipping methods, graphite trick for barrels and Oil Wash all are things I do to my tanks. Pigments as well.
Awesome work. Subbed. I also paint up 6mm GHQ models - WW2 micro armour to play historicals. Adding cammo foliage and aerials, weathering and chipping, and even divisional/company badge markings is a go for the heresy! Micro set/micro sol is very good for decals too.
Looking very nice! And when you were doing the weapons, I was thinking I should get that paint as well, but hold on, don't I have a metallic drybrush paint from that series? Oh, yeah I do, and iiiiit's...Gun Metal. Awesome.
Love them. Painting tiny tanks is just too much fun and makes it tempting to build an armoured company to support the legion I’m gonna paint up. Even more so if/when they release a Shadowsword 😅
I just bought myself and my son a copy of the game, haven't really played much games workshop stuff for many years, so the 'lore' is somewhat different from when I remember, I am going to paint mine up as Sons of Horus and my son is either going imperial fists or Ultramarines, I cannot find any schemes or what SA armies go with either of them. Love the painting, looks really good.
awesome video! also around 13:38 I think you got some oil wash on your camera lens. In case that's a problem and should be cleaned off :D The tanks look incredible!
Wow, you've just shown me how bloody good an oil wash is on these. Like, I was gonna wash them ,but didn't think to use an oil wash - looks incredible!!! :O I'm going with an urban/city camo on mine, so lots of squares/triangles across them, then will go over with an oil wash :D
I'd recommend using less spirits with your oil paint, it will flow just as well but you won't have to do it 2 or 3 times. You're using a shed load of spirits for the amount of paint you're using. You really don't need oil paint to be as thin as an acrylic wash for it to flow nicely. Lovely work on the tank though
Fantastic video. I’ve really had a hard time deciding on the color scheme for my own traitor Solar Auxilia but you really inspired me and gave me some great ideas. I know Henry said he’s holding off on the infantry until the transports are related but will you be releasing a painting tutorial for the infantry when he starts to work on them?
Wonderful video. Loving the Epic coverage! What’s your guidance on thinning GW paints for airbrushing? Keen to try your method for Dark Angels once my Legions Imperialis arrive…. :)
O.G. AT and epic player - still had one foot firmly in the 'would be good if it wasn't just heresy' camp, until your last vid; after which, I ordered the box. I'm pumped for the titans and super-heavies, but I wasn't around for the AT re-release, so I feel I'm a bit behind. Anxiously FOMO'ing about large waves being announced, selling-out, then the game being sunsetted, while I'm left holding a starter box. Hope not! Seems everyone's doing a Legion, so I might join you and the other guy in chat, to make 3 SA players, in total - being so few of us, I do feel a bit bad that I will have to Scour you 😅
It's one of the old forgeworld books, Imperial Armour - Model Masterclass vol. 1. Kind of pricey now as they're oop, but you can find free pdf copies online usually.
I do like the little tanks, but im less keen on the infantry. I cant tell if thats just the box art colour scheme doing them dirty or the designs of the models themselves
Absolutely brilliant work - The Solar Auxilia is the real gem of Legions Imperialis !
Tank battalions for DAAAYYYYYSSS! :D

I will endeavour to do updates on my Solar, but not sure how popular they will be....
I'll watch them all...😂
Please bring a Update ... love this scheme @@cultofpaint
Great job mate, you've really nailed scaling down that forgeworld/military style. A whole army will look stunning.
Brilliant video. Youve convinced me this is a far better way to fulfil my bucket list of guard tank army than 32mm
I’m so glad someone finally did a painting video for Solar Auxilia! I have a Solar auxilia force I’m slowly building in Horus heresy! And I’m hyped!
Amazing and inspiring work. I really want to see more of that army, namely the infantry models and newer releases.
@@MarneusAndMilkyBlood I'll be doing an update on it when I paint something other than more tanks!

Synthetic brush hairs are my go to choice for super-miniature whippy aerials as well! I really enjoyed the colour choices here, great inspiration!
Love your philosophy and that you took the time to discuss your inspiration. Great first video for me to stumble on and discover your channel with.

This is just a video I needed! Right on time! Thanks a lot!
Really enjoy your work! Thanks for doing these.
Fantastic work, I've been waiting for this video to drop since you mentioned last week you'd be doing one on the SA.
One more day to go! Can’t wait!
100% dope work! I am in serious Tank love now! 🧡
They look great!
These are superb, cant wait to get my hands on my Imperialis set.
Absolutely fab, can’t wait to try it myself
Outstanding, please make sure we get some shots of these on the tabletop 🙏
What a lovely colour scheme. Great vid.

Nice one Nick!
I really like using a pencil to edge highlight tracks. Here and there.
I did this on the tester model. And I liked it, but felt it was one step that could be missed out.

Will be awesome if we get them big scale
Looks killer mate, makes me want to paint some up

Probably see if MiG has a winter camo set!
Cheers, will do.
I use very fine guitar wire
What colors would you use for the main body using GW colors??
No idea. But they've loads of greens so you're bound to find a couple that are close enough. Pop into a store and compare some together in your hand.

@@cultofpaint so... got 2 starters and 2 battle groups, now - thinking about how to adapt the process to a white base...
When using Tamiya paints with a brush, what are you cleaning /rinsing the brush with?
Isopropyl alcohol
would you recommend a similar approach on the aircraft?
Yes
Where is this book available?
Did you thin down your gloss varnish?
Yes I thin my polyurethane one. Approx 2 drops thinner per 1 drop varnish. But you may need to adjust to your own settings etc
Solar Auxilia Best Army
Great looking Solar. What decals did you use on these? Are the chaos symbols free hand?
Mainly from the Chaos Knight sheet

I need to learn to compromise to a higher level.

Same as I did the lads in the turrets here.

Wouldn't a wire be better for the antenna? Those will break off if you breath on them.
They've held up very well. Plastic glue bonded together. But yes wire is fine too, as long as your contact point is good then no bother.
Weird question: how many tanks do u need for a game.
Not sure. There's a fair amount available. Plus it depends on the points level for the game. I think there's about 1000 points on show in this video
