Skating is such a great outlet. When my Grandma passed as soon as i got home i skated and thats when I realized what it really meant to me. Stay strong brother and keep pushing
If your sweating and your feeling some sore muscles I would call that semi athletic for sure, when it comes to physical activity, but on the other hand if you think your an athlete then who's to say otherwise. Like you said John, those pre teens kicking but in the Olympics, I am for sure that they feel like they are athletes as they should. Keep inspiring us all, keep the good vibes flowing. This is the best part of every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for me. Thanks for the motivation and positivity, just awesome.

You could say that figure skaters aren't athletic with that strength logic. Heck, even some hockey players. Maybe not these days for hockey due to the demands, but definitely 60 years ago. I agree that it doesn't require to be as strong as some athletic things, but you are definitely stronger in many ways due to skateboarding than you would be without. Your bones, muscles, and connective tissues can withstand a heck of a lot more than if you didn't skateboard. More than a lot of other athletes. Your bone density is higher from jumping and landing, thus making your bones stronger, thus making you a stronger human, thus making you more athletic. You may not be strong in a weightlifting sense, but your body is hella strong from skateboarding. And, just like in other sports, you raise your skill potential, while lowering your injury probability, by getting stronger outside of the sport (strength training helps CNS, thus helps coordination, etc., etc.). So, training in a gym can make you better and prevent injury. But skateboarding definitely makes you more athletic even without the gym. To start you do not need to be athletic, but it does help prevent injury if you are a bit more athletic, so exercising off the board would probably be wise. Not neccessary, but would help in a few ways.
@@edd8915 yes you do. If you took a couch potato and had them jump down a 10 set, no board, they would probably seriously injure themselves. Take a professional skateboarder and have them do the same and they will be fine. Skateboarding has made the skaters body strong through constant athletic training and conditioning on the board.
@@gaigeah4758 I never said you need to lift heavy. However you do need strength in order to hop your whole body off the ground repeatedly in order to skate. I was never arguing with what john said just adding nuance.
Really depends on who you are as a person and how you view it. Myself and a few others I know run ultra marathons, lift, or do something outside of skateboarding. The older you get the more important it is to find new interest and things to keep you healthy.
I love how John explains himself in this video, breaking down and comparing an athlete to a skateboarder, showing that you do not need to train like an athlete to be skater, skaters are active though and they do benefit from the excersize. Though playing sports can be damaging to your body, like too much of anything is. Athletes train so their body holds up over time and can keep up with the things they love doing, and as a skater we can learn from them and do it if we truly want to pursue it. He uses media to help develop and further explain his point, showing that you do not need train your hardest, be strongest in order to have skill, skill comes from practice.
Debatable. To be a “world class skateboarder” you kinda have to be on the same level and train/practice around just as hard. It just seems a bit easier because most skaters that are that good put in as many hours as a Olympic level gymnast or whatever, the difference is with the life style (most of the time) but the amount of time spent learning is similar. Nowadays there are some skateboarders that live clean, eat healthy and don’t do any drugs, but that’s mostly a recent shift of the paradigm.
@@ueltrades9479 The guys at the "world class" level skate everyday, all day pretty much just like Olympians, except some drink and party, smoke weed etc. Nowadays though, there are more pro skaters that are into clean living and don't drink or smoke, and eat healthy, vegetarian/vegan now that skateboarding is way bigger than its ever been.
Love it John. With skateboarding being primarily technical, of course it’s not necessary to be a great athlete. However, if the individual improves/maximizes their overall athleticism (rate of force development, proprioceptive awareness, functional range of motion, muscular endurance, etc.), they surely will be able to spend more time on the board, experience less injuries, and most importantly, have more fun 🤩 Hopefully that message spreads. It’s not about being jacked, rather functional. Let’s skate forever! 👊❤️
I was 155 lbs short fat guy then I started skateboarding, now I'm about 125 in just months. Man if skateboarding aint an athletic sport I dont know what is. Thankful for it cause I became a health conscious person
Good work. My natural weight is 190-200lbs I am at 265 now and skating is much harder when you weight that much. It is very athletic. Being athletic and a athlete are too different sides of the same coin.
Ive found that being very athletic and around 170 i can do general tricks like shovs and ollies but tricks that require alot of dexterity are tough because i have to be way more explosive
Those falls where you body then just stop without any slide or roll out are always the most painful. Even when it's not a 'big' fall it just rocks everything.
As a 39 year old skater, I skate better when my diet and training routine are dialed in. I will skate better 1-2 days a week with 4-5 days of strength and cardio than I will with 3-4 days of skating and 2 or 3 of training.
I agree. I work out using calisthenics, so developing a strong core helped improve my skateboarding when it comes to control and balancing. Being fit is also beneficial for handling falls. My body can take much more of a beating so to speak, although knowing how to fall while minimizing damage comes with experience.
3:33 The reason why "normal looking" skaters are winning is because as a whole skaters have not invested vast amounts of their time in the pursuit of becoming stronger. I would argue however that physical fitness is very important for skateboarding. Especially during those long sessions or battling a hardcore trick down a gap or a set of stairs for 2 hours. Physical fitness is extremely extremely important, but the physical features you need to have for skateboarding are different to those of other sports. You don't need to have large muscle in terms of size but your body needs to be very efficient. For example skaters who are lightweight and light on their feet are often better prepared to take on hard hits and they also have much better endurance and are more eficient in their movement. It takes less energy to move less weight so it only makes sense that skaters on the lighter side have an advantage over heavier ones. Skaters like Trevor Colden, Kyle Walker and Dakota Servold are definitely ones that I can think off the top of my head who make skateboarding look effortless. In other words you can pack very slim but explosive muscle power to pop tricks high, and you would also need the endurance to be able to finish those 45 second contest runs. Contest runs in particular are about trick mastery but also endurance. You can have a trick on lock every try but if you're getting out of breath in the middle of your run then the efficiency of your body is not up to par. I would argue skateboarding is extremely athletic sport and the skaters who are taking athleticism seriously are pulling ahead. Here and there you would see some overweight skaters who are extremely good, but that is just because of their inherent talent. Optimizing your body for the specific use is key to achieving success and in the case of skateboarding that definitely wouldn't be training for size like bodybuilders and football players do, of course it won't help, but training your body for the specific use of skateboarding can help massively. Especially things like stretching, strength and conditioning, endurance training, etc. In conclusion I definitely do not agree with the argument in this video.
Skateboarders are genuinely good at other sports. From the core strength and hand eye coordination, to the tackling of concrete that happens occasionally. We are pretty resilient creatures. I'd say we are athletic.
The argument that skateboarding is not a sport slips into the idea that skaters are not athletic. So freaking stupid. One question: Is running a sport? To skate, just add ridiculous balance, technique, physical control over your entire body and the intestinal fortitude to potentially get hurt at any moment. It's one of the greatest sports because only the board and you matter, everything else just exists.
Those were the sickest manuals! Your channel has inspired me to buy my first skateboard- I’m really excited 🙂 thanks John for being inspiring and real ✌️
I do feel like skateboarding will be my way of exercising and I will be super into it (mainly bc Iv been watching skateboarding for 2+ years) but the problem is my parents dont want me to bc my other siblings have broken their arms on skateboards. After I did that I was so stroked but I am never trying that shit ever again in my life , sure I almost broke my neck . 20 people saw me do it and thought I was a pro and I was like hell no I just love skateboarding . When I use to skate when I was young I just had to do something if it took beating myself up . But that's half the fun the challenge , doing the impossible and making it happen in my opinion . No way in hell id try such a stunt these days I'm way too old for that shit . Dislocated my right shoulder one day was nasty as fck .
