  • Unfortunately, I am once again bringing you a crash video of a Motion rc product! These videos are becoming far too common on my channel! Once again Motion rc has delivered an untrustworthy product! I have NO personal problem with their company, dont know any of their employees personally, and actually wish I had found another company that provided us enthusiasts with solid products and support! HOWEVER, what I found was POOR QUALITY CONTROL and OVERPRICED product along with terrible customer service! If you buy Motion buy the ARF and add your own servos and electronics. Or save yourself the headache and sorrow and just buy Horizon or Arrows or another trusted brand since the lower quality companies all charge as much these days. I own Horizon planes that are still flying after 15 years and hundreds of flights. I have had problems on 3 out of 3 planes form motion ranging in price from $600 to $315 that to me spells POOR QUALITY ACCROSS THEIR ENTIRE line up! I spent my own $ to review these products to give HONEST reviews so you can save yours, please consider liking and subscribing!!

I’ve been getting my RC products from Motion RC for years. I’ve never had a problem with them. I had lots of problems with Banana Hobby with poor quality of Blitz and not being responsive with customer service. All or most of RC products like the foam airplanes are made in China so buyers purchasing anything made in China need to expect that a higher percentage of failure. It’s that way with anything you get from China. Motion RC is no more to blame than any other company selling these products.

Glad you have had good luck! I have friends who have had good luck as well! I wanted NOTHING more than to have found a company whose planes I could push to their limits for my viewers. However, I can only show what happened in my experience. NOT sugar coat anything for a company, especially when they treated me the way they did! They would have overnighted a replacement to a big channel. I have reviewed one and ordered another of Freewing's products to review and will continue to honestly review what I can to bring my viewers valuable information. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I have had similar experiences with several E-flite models. I'd say it is a symptom of every typical ARF company's efforts to reduce production cost and I even wonder how well they thrash them around during the product development phase. A V900 that went into a Galloping Ghost type climb and dive on flight 3 and splatted, a Conscendo that went unresponsive and dove straight in (I swear the stabilizer got confused in a vertical line), a flap servo went dead on my Night Timber last week, already replaced one of the aileron servos.. etc etc etc. Cheap cheap cheap. Yet, some of them last 150 flights pus with steady abuse. A gamble for sure.

Sorry for your loss, it could have been servo related. However, when I first watched your flight, it looked like a model that had climbed inverted almost to the vertical, almost like someone who is about to do a stall turn. At this point it really looked like your airspeed had dropped right off and when the model dropped, your elevator did not have enough effect to recover from a stall situation. I maybe wrong, but that was my first impression. I have flown my own Glow powered P-38 and you know what a high wing loading this model has

Been in the sport 8 years. This is without question my favorite prop driven to fly. Never had an issue with any control surface. (Now I’m scared sh••less) I had the front gear not deploy, made a grass landing. Not a scratch, didn’t even break the props.
This is one of those (I have about 7) that if it goes down in pieces I’ll have it’s replacement on order before I leave the field.

Nice! hope you NEVER have too! If I had the means I would definitely consider reordering one! Maybe just the ARF so I could replace crucial servos though. The P-38 is beautiful in the air and has ALWAYS been one of my favorite warbirds! Curious which 6 others you refer to.......sound like good fliers. Thank you for the kind words.
What can I add to you?
I ran a model club with my friend for a few years. We taught children how to make models. There were no smart controllers doing everything for you now, no computers and no simulators. But the more stubborn kids flew. And they had great fun with it ... Because there was a lot of room for independent thinking and innovation. Own patents and solutions.
I can only confirm the previous.
You see ... I have a thought for 40 years to bury everything to make sure it works. That's why my friends have been calling me for years - the Searchers.
Besides, I've already written a lot in various forums about learning to fly.
Much bad is happening because, for example, you watch national shows of a very expensive model and what do you see?
A model worth more than your car breaks the landing gear on landing. How is it even possible ??? Why is the pilot choking the plane to the ground just to end the show? Is ashamed? Conditions too difficult? Or maybe he can't?
"Because he has finally changed his job for a better one and has the money to make his dreams of toys come true." - for example.
So he thinks he can do it. Then she goes with the model to the shows and makes a stupid mistake.
When you try to talk to him, he reacts nervously as if you are hitting on his wife.
But he'll never buy a landing skill.

What brand of radio are you using? I've had three crashes (almost) in a row caused by uncommanded full-down elevator. The radio was a 2020 Spektrum DX6 using three different Spektrum receivers and relatively easy-to-fly models. (powered sailplane, old-timer, and an Astro-Hog). I've witnessed at least two other, similar crashes at our field with late-model Spektrum txmtrs. I used to love their stuff, but after my last crash, I'm done with them. Anybody want to buy a DX6 transmitter, cheap?

Sorry you have had bad luck! I use the NX10 & I was using the 8 channel telemetry receiver. Thats what I got for all 3 motion planes and two went down. Dont think it was the receiver though, the new transmitter will tell you if you loose connection and it didn't in those cases. Is there a newly added business around the field with equipment that might be interfering with signals? We had problems with a Honeywell facility that was doing govt. work that would sometimes hit our transmitters.

Hey man, I feel your pain. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with an Eflite jet on Thursday. The 80mm F-18 Blue Angel. It had an inherent right roll tendency which no amount of left trim or input would completely counteract. Full left would just barely keep it level. After about 30-45 seconds it departed from controlled flight and smashed into a tree, destroying the airplane. At least the electronics are good. Man, it was my dream plane, I waited for it for 2 years until I finally got it, and I didn’t even get one good flight. Just a big disappointment, especially for a Horizon Hobby plane that cost upwards of $500. It shouldn’t fly bad like that. In my humble opinion, you were pushing the plane far beyond what it was designed to do. Full-scale planes have a Vne (velocity never exceed) and I believe the same applies to RC planes although it is never mentioned. High-speed, full-bore flying puts a lot of stress on the control surfaces and servos and can induce failure, obviously, even if the airframe manages to stay together. Control surface flutter is also more likely at high speed and can be catastrophic.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion! I consistently put models through tests like this. I fly ALL my planes this way and some even harder! There are the inevitable things that go wrong, I agree. However, on the second flight to have a failure like that was not acceptable for the amount of money they charge for their product, that was my main problem. Also had just had their $590 F-15 fail in VERY calm, routine flight, on a maiden with NO support from the company at all (see my Freewing F-15 video) I will say I have had better luck with their products since, but they left a bad taste in my mouth after having issues with ALL 3 planes on my first purchase from them!

Had exactly the same thing happen to a Motion RC Shrike. On about the 10th flight it starting acting up in the pitch axis, then rolled over an went straight in. The only servo that was stripped was the elevator. I checked the ailerons and rudder, they were OK. It was less than 3 weeks old. Motion RC claimed it must have experienced a hard landing before the servo failure. It was flying great at the first of that last flight. Landings had all been smooth slides on short grass. I'll not be buying anything else from them.

I don't have a lot of planes in the hanger yet because I've just got back into the hobby this year but over the many years of being in this hobby, I've never had a servo go bad in flight on any control surface. I know, lucky me right. It is very sad to see something like this happen. At first, I thought this was going to be a structural failure of some kind because you seem to fault the plane but this is clearly an electronics equipment failure. Yes the servo's came installed in the kit so that makes it fair game to complain about Motion R/C but really, the plane itself is quite good. Put in trusted servos and electronics as required and you will have an outstanding P-38 that will fly without any problems. That's why many of us like ARF's over PNP so that isn't an issue ever. I'm kind of interested in the actual servo failure itself. If you take that apart and examine it, is there anything obviously wrong with it? What would cause a servo to get pinned to one side? Only thing I could think of is a small particle of debris left from the factory by accident. Surely this isn't a common thing to happen like this. I would open that servo up and inspect it. Did the elevator servo stay in that locked position after the crash or was it then working again? If it was working again, I would look at the linkages carefully to see if there was an issue with that. Was the linkage attached after the crash?

    • @redbeardreviewsrc
      @redbeardreviewsrc  Рік тому +1

The Linkage was not attached, but cant determine if it happened in flight or when it crashed! And yes you are a lucky guy. I had 0 holds on the radio. Probably was a linkage issue as the connectors leave plenty to be desired. Totally agree with the ARF but wanted to buy what MOST people will get to review. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I suspect a signal issue, at least on the P-38. Since you use Spektrum, did you check the Frame losses and Holds after the flight? You should also set alarms for Frame losses over 150 and any Holds. I have 15 large Freewing/Flightline aircraft and 10 HH's and although both use crappy servos, the only issues for me have come from poor signals, especially in twins. That's not saying their electronics are never bad. Although HH's habit of discontinuing products quickly has resulted in my personal ban on their products (except TX and RX which I use exclusively). I use RF chokes and sattelite remotes on almost every aircraft to solve it. HH is good at locating antennas and usually the signals on RX installed models are good, but even the twin SU-30 was almost impossible to cure without a satellite, chokes and constantly readjusting all four antennas. That P-38 crash looked like a classic example of a Hold, when you rolled back level, the elevator stayed in down position, its last location, and ailerons were sporadic at best. Being the signal line from TX was to the rear of the plane, the signal would be masked/affected by 2 ESC's, the power cables, throttle wires, carbon fiber tubes and the batteries, a recipe for sporadic signal issues and RF interference. Range tests help, but only checking signals in flight and seeing what the final frame/holds at the end will give you the true picture. Don't assume it's not the signal just because you are using a good TX and RX, it's all in the surrounding electronics and antenna/RX placement. I use a DX 9 and an IX 20 and all RX's are Spektrum, but if I don't have the above issues placed correctly, I've had signal issues. Could be out in left field, but just a thought.

Hi, great videos, I too had a red beard many years ago, now its just white! LOL! I have my own complaints about Motion rc That I wont discuss here, But I have a few thoughts. I had a friend with a spektrum DX radio that was having loss of signal issues. Somewhere in the radio is a place to select the usa power output level or the European output level. I can find it and tell you where it is if you are interested. His radio had the European level selected, when he changed it to the USA output his problems resolved. Another issue I know of and freewing does this on almost all their planes. there is too much travel selected by the improper setup of the control surface throws. In other words, if you actuate the servo 100% the hinge or the pivot of the control surface will bind. Nothing is harder on a servo than loading it up against a hard stop. You need to reduce the travel mechanically of your servos so that they dont bind at the limits of their travel. In most cases this means selecting the hole closest to the servo pivot point. I have most of the freewing 70, 80, and 90mm jets and I have never lost a servo in flight, and I fly them all. Maybe I have been lucky, I dont know. But I always reduce my control throws so there is no mechanical bind at full travel. Most times in the freewing directions they have you using the hole furthest out in the servo arm or maybe the 2nd one in. This will Bind! You cant just reduce the end point travel in the radio because sometimes when I power up, the servos go to full deflection one side or the other. I hope some of this helps! Good luck! Keep up the good work!

Maybe the motors and speed controllers could be reused after checking them for damage. Luckily all of the landing gear are also still useable! Thanks for watching!

It appears that you may have plugged the landing light into the wrong port on the blue box meant for the wingtip lights, as for the elevator servo failure it's pretty well documented on the forums that the servo is not reliable and will fail, and it's also known to rip out of the foam surface under high G maneuvers. There is no excuse for that lack of quality but I always browse the model specific forums before I maiden any of these Chinese made airplanes, and I remedied the issue with a new servo and servo reinforcement before this happened to my $600 plus dollar bird.

Both the $590 f-15 and the $490 p-38 crashed almost immediately due to unknown causes. I had quality issues with the f-16 as well (jittery servo & front gear failure in flight). So that is where my head was at..... I am HIGHLY impressed with their B-2 but I also own their Gripen and have had multiple issues with a gear door that has NEVER been quite right. In my experience Eflite, FMS, Xfly, or even Flyfans have NEVER let me down in quality OR customer support the way motion has. The P38 is also my favourite warbird. I have 2 of the Flightline P38s Silver and Green. I am also in the process of building a 3.2 metre twin 85 cc petrol engine super scale. I have lots of Freewing and Flightline products. As others have already advised Motion RC pretends to be in control of the quality and build of these models. Bt they are only a US distributor and have no say in the models themselves. You need to be aware that all the foamies are built to a price and not a quality standard. Freewing split the product line into Freewing for Jets and Flightline for props.
You also need to understand that they have had issues with servos and interconnection boxes. The BECs are low quality. your lucky you didn't buy the Mig 29. That was a disaster with the underpowered elevator servos.
Don't get discouraged most foamies don't have great quality control and all built in China. E-Flite rebadge FMS models.
You just need to test everything and replace anything that you dont like in the electronics. The prop motors and EDFs are all OK.
    Cheers

@@redbeardreviewsrc Yes, but they are foamies. My Aviation Jets SU35S twin turbine was $20,000 for the airframe, electric retracts and servos, My P38 was $15,000 for airframe, electric retract and servos. I have a lot of composite models from CY, TopRC, Blackhorse, and Topflight. These are $2000 for airframes with retracts, no electronics or engines. The price of a Plug and Play models from Freewing, FMS, E-Flite etc are all good value wherever you buy them. With Electronics, Motors, EDFs and servos. They come in at a very good price for foamies. But because of the popularity and the low cost for this hobby the market is very competitive, so pricing is very sensitive hence the compromise on the parts that come standard, like servos and control boxes. Spending $100 for a servo of good quality is not unusual. I appreciate your videos of your exploits you are a good aggressive pilot. you should try flying RC Helicopters they do assist in your skills, or at least they did for me. @@redbeardreviewsrc Yes I have the Freewing Mig 29, got out from Motion RC as nearly all of my Freewing and Flightline models. 32 different model types some of them in pairs for formation flying and pilot training. I hate instructing on other peoples aircraft. The majority of this collection is in my rented storage garages. I leant to fly fixed wing nitro about 45 years ago and lost my first plane on my second session due to a low quality Sanwa radio. My instructor did the best he could to recover it but it was pointless. He apologised but it was not his fault. He was and is a very good pilot instructor, and modeller. You may have heard of him, his name is Peter Goldsmith. My club where I leaned to fly had some amazing pilots and instructors. I watched one of the instructors land a model safely, that had completely lost the elevators. He landing it using throttle control only. He was a Chief Check Pilot for Qantas and shuttled brand new 747s from Boing Field to Sydney Australia. Me, I'm am just an average grunt pilot that loves the hobby. I am just retired now and collected lots of models over the years ready for my retirement when I know money would be short, and accidents would be prevalent. 😂
With the Freewing Mig29, they recognised after many maiden and early crashes that it had a problem with the elevator servos. Motion sent out replacement (Higher Torque) Elevator Servos for those early adopters with instructions on how to update. Freewing then updated the newer models with the better servos.
But MigGate did show a lot of quality issues from many UA-cam channels. Most of us with the Migs also replaced the control rods with stiffer ones. Some went with Carbon fibre tubes, I went with Titanium. There are also videos of pilots doing stress tests on the Freewing Servos using servo testers where the Elevator servos would fail after about 15 minutes.
The issue casued the Mig 29 elevator servos to fail when in a steep dive, particularly if flaps were also in use. The elevator would fail and you could not pull out of the dive.
How did your friend lose his? The same problem, no elevator control after a dive?
If you want to upgrade servos, make sure that they have sufficient torque and the Potentiometers in them are Taiwanese. For expensive composite models make sure that they are at least Coreless for non critical surfaces and Brushless for the ones that a critical. And stress test all of them for at least 20 minutes. For Taiwanese pots this test duration is not an issue, due to the quality of the resistive surface and the wipers.
For expensive models I always add a Advanced Radio Smoothflite Gyro servo controller. Its not about helping you fly as your skills are not up to scratch but to assist you in bringing down a damaged plane safely. There is a great UA-cam example of this from them; showing a composite turbine sports jet hitting a pole with the right wing in a high speed flypast, It ripped the tip off the wing and damaged the wing root but was completely flyable and landed safely. Amazing to watch.
Keep up reviewing what you get in the box, love the aggressive flight style as well. I have folder bookmarks for all my model Purchases and keep video bookmarks in them so I can review before I start building the model for any potential issues that need attention. You now have some bookmarks in my folders. 👍

So go right ahead and fly like you own stolen it . Wait . I do know that when I got into flying model airplanes I was like most kids . I started with rubber band models the started to build my own . Over the years as a kid I was learning things about structure , strengths . wood weights . and even the covering . Then for a long time I was out of it until I was disabled . Then I got back into it again back about 30 years ago . Back then I took everything I know and applied into model aircraft . I had invented a vary light but strong structure that no one had ever used back then and still dont to this day . I glass both sides of every sheet of the lightest Balsa I could buy . I apply one light coat of epoxy lay fiberglass cloth to the sheet . Then put those sheets into a vacuum chamber that I built . Then let that dry . I use those sheets instead of light ply or other multi ply woods . I also used carbon fiber back in the 80's as well . One place I did used this was no spars . Instead of using 5 ply I used light ply with fiberglass layup . This also made the plane even lighter . Most people build their 1/5 scale Mustangs at 35 or more lbs . I can built it in at 20 lbs and be stronger and faster . It also can come down land slower . More of a scale speed . There was one person I knew and the was Dave Platt . a British guy that I had met a long time ago . He built some of the lightest planes and the best planes I ever seen and flown . He told me if you could build them light then they fly right . He was right and he and I got along and always on the same page of thinking . As an old modeller, I feel sorry for what you must have felt when you saw the model crash to the ground and you couldn't do anything.
But this is what is sick in modern modeling.
We buy models, not build them. Then we fly them, believing somewhere in the subconscious that those people also have our mentality of modellers. No, they are not, and often do not understand very much what they are doing.
And then surprise, because one small screw, worth 0.2 cents, failed.
Because her daughter called the lady installing the screw in your model that the dog had just pooped on the couch ... And she - instead of screwing it in - waved the screwdriver explaining to her how to remove what the dog had shattered. And this is the screw that locked your servo pusher and smashed the model.
Can you make a complaint? Oh no. Because you can't prove that this lady's dog got shit.
Okay - I'm just kidding because they're actually not allowed to talk while they work. But they have big deficiencies in CORRECT AND COMPLETE quality control. These are different standards. There, several parameters are measured and it is assumed that if it is on, it is OK. This is not what it is.
But also this is all our modeling is worth, if you trust too much serial production, which has a certain accuracy and COST SAVINGS, you do not look carefully through the entire model and do not change what looks suspiciously easy or cheap. Or you just won't build yours from scratch.
So that there would be no unnecessary thoughts - I also have such models and I also fly with them. Because I didn't have anywhere to make them, for example.
But I check every rivet, every screw and soldering. Never believe Chinese quality.
I have been flying models for 40 years and have never had such a failure. Guess why?
