  • welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
    In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a piece of sycamore firewood into a lidded vessel, the void was filled with epoxy resin.
    when woodturning a piece like this I like to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning.
    This piece of sycamore was lying around in the workshop destined for the fire wood pile, but it had a large void in it so every time I mixed too much epoxy resin for a pour I filled the void on this piece with the left over (hence not having the epoxy resin pour section of this piece recorded)
    the lid for this vessel was made from a very lovely off cut of yew. I like the fact that everything in this video was saved from waste.

    Would have preferred a matching finished top. But your finished work is your art and still absolutely beautiful. You are inspirational. Thanks.

      Thanks Vernon, it’s always nice to hear this kind of feedback/opinion.
      I wanted to create contrast with the lid, as I’m sure you’ll know, yew will darken in time with the effects of sunlight meaning although the contrast isn’t too strong at the moment as this piece ages the lid will become a deep red/brown.
      However, this is what I find so fascinating about woodturning.. any one piece of wood could become an endless number of different objects depending on the craftsman who works the piece, and the decisions made during the turning process.
      Thanks for following along. I appreciate you watching, commenting and likening my work.

    Fantastic work lovely shape pleasing to the eye.can you tell me what is the make of your blue power sander and maybe a link to where to purchase that would be great regards Martin

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 роки тому +1

      Cheers Martin, it’s just a makita angle grinder, fitted with M14 50mm hook and loop backing pads. If your in the US your grinder will likely be M10. I’d not recommend sanding like this without extremely good dust extraction very close to the workpiece. It also takes some practice to be able to use this high speed grinder in a moving workpiece so please be careful. I use the lathe in reverse when sanding like this too.

      Thanks, I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful figure in the wood. Some people don’t rate sycamore, but I find it to be one of the more interesting woods I have available to me.

    Another stunning piece!
    Where do you find such nice wood? Scavenging Craigslist? Online wood sellers? Friends/relatives?
    I’m currently latheless, but am always looking at online wood sellers, like Cook Woods, etc. Their stuff is always cut to predefined sizes and sometimes a hundred dollars, or more for blanks that are smaller than yours and often not as nice.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 роки тому +5

      Hi Ken, thank you.
      I’m a production bowl turner, I make 1000s of bowls per year so I buy my wood as trees, generally selected from mountains of trees waiting to become fire wood.
      I would encourage any woodturner to avoid seasoned blanks and to go and source green wood, you have so many options available to you when you start with a tree trunk rather than a bowl blank.

    Nice work and very interesting !
    And I have a question, what's your gouge at the beginning of the video ? I'm looking for something like that but i don't found it !

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 роки тому +1

      That’s a 5/8th bowl gouge. You’ll find plenty of them available as they are the main tool a wood turner would use. You won’t find them in the shops with that shape cutting edge, that’s something you have to do to the gouge yourself.

    Awesome work as always Jack. Quick question, are you finishing only with friction polish, it are you applying another finish on top of the friction polish?

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks. I’m not exactly sure about the friction polish.. to my knowledge (and there a high chance I’m wrong) friction polish would have oil in too. So I just refer to the first coat ( sqeeze bottle) as shellac sealer.. basically isopropyl and shellac flakes, I don’t make it to a specific recipe I just know the viscosity that works for me.
      But to answer your question, il follow that with a single coat of wax or paste wax depending on the item being finished. For smaller stuff with a consistent body il use hard carnauba wax but in this case I used a past like Hampshire sheen high gloss.
      Il add that if I’m making an item for our home I prefer Matt, oil or no finish at all. But for customers and videos like this shiny wood always seems to be most popular. ✨😎✨

    • @MrMartell2012
      @MrMartell2012 3 роки тому +1

      @@JackMackWoodturning Thanks for clarifying that. I assumed that it was a friction polish judging from the darker color and now that I think about it, it's different shades of shellac flakes available. Thanks for your help!!!

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 роки тому +1

      cheers for watching Paul, it was just left over resin from other pours.. I do wish now that I’d actually filled this void with resin mixed for this particular piece. Plenty more wood and resin to play with.
      Let me know what you think of the ones iv got coming up. 👍🏻
