- Welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
Woodturning - The Monkey Puzzle
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn an air dried large piece of monkey puzzle into a 16 inch pedestal platter.
when woodturning a piece like i find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl, but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.

That might be the most relaxing video I've ever seen on UA-cam. Awesome piece of art!
Wow, cheers chazz, thanks for watching. 😊👍🏻
Mesmerised just watching this artisan at work.
Thanks John. Glad you enjoyed it 😁👍🏻
The most ingenious ways of turning a massive piece of wood into a teeny-weeny piece of wood! Whoever has the job of sweeping-up at your place doesn't get paid enough!
🤣🤣🤣
A Really Gorgious piece !
AUGURI !
Thanks Stephan. Glad you enjoyed it buddy 😉👍🏻
At first, I thought his wasting so much wood then when it got to the end I saw why beautiful job my friend

😊👍🏻
I tried to move on but I saw that chunk of wood. Aww, it is georgious. Something is going to be really really breathtaking. I have to watch.
🤣 cheers Linda. Hope you enjoyed 😊👍🏻
This is incredible! Weird coincidence... just yesterday, I discovered this wood for the first time and fell in love, now, if only I could find a piece, haha!
It’s very hard to come by. Iv been turning for a long time and this was the first chunk iv been able to get my hands on, as I understand it the tree is generally protected as it’s native lands have been heavily deforested causing it to be somewhat endangered, this means we only get it when I tree has been felled for safety reasons. It’s always nice to get a piece of wood to turn but I’d never want to turn a tree that has been harvested solely for its timber.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning
I completely agree, thanks for letting me know!
There’s a company in Florida, Woodturning blanks 4 U, that sells it.
@@g.leebihm2588 They are great, I have gotten only great blanks from them at good prices. They are my favorite source.
Jack napakatalim ng chisel na ginagamit mo.
This is the most stunningly beautiful piece I have seen in a long time. And the wood is just awesome.
Thanks kobie. Really glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
Satisfying watching the shavings ribbon off like that, must be marvellous to turn. Lovely piece of work
Cheers Paul.. thanks for following along. 👍🏻
Absolutely stunning. What a fabulous piece. I bet I am one of many who would love to own this. Xxx
This turned out absolutely beautiful! You really do wonderful work. Gorgeous.
Thanks FAE. Glad you enjoyed it 😉👍🏻
Lovely classic piece. I Like how you used the typical radiating branches of the monkey puzzle tree to make a flower shaped grain pattern in the bowl.
Cheers Andrew. Glad you
Enjoyed it mate. Thanks for
Watching 😊👍🏻
What a beautiful piece I'd say its one of my favorites you've done. Great work and so talented.
Nice one Mark. I like this one too. Can’t recall where it ended up 😊👍🏻
Wow! Stunning!
Thank you! 😊 This is an old one! How did you come across it?
That is a beautiful piece of art. Hopefully, it will go to someone that will pass it down to future generations.
I do hope so John, this piece sold extremely fast.
Thanks for watching 🙂👍🏻
Soy aprendiz de torneado y este vídeo me es muy útil para mi aprendizaje, mil gracias por subir videos como este!
Beautiful... Very classic Idea..You see in the wood!
Thanks Frank. Glad you enjoyed it matey. 😉👍🏻☺️
Stunning 👍🏴
That is beautiful good work
Thanks David. Glad you enjoyed it man 👍🏻😊
Impressions: 1. Beautiful piece of NIP. 2. Nice work on cutting the French curves on the base. 3. I have large plate jaws with rubber feet so I only have to cut one tenon on what will be the base. 4. I would like to have you stop the lathe more often to see what is happening to the NIP branches as you form the bowl. 5. Many turners soak the NIP branches with thin CA, as they tend to crack or break out. 6. NIP is notorious for tearing out when turned, and you had trouble with that on the base. There’s no solution but more sanding.
That is one beautiful pedestal platter/bowl! I was wondering what monkey puzzle looked like, as a wood: Very interesting grain! Thanks for showing us!
It’s beautiful wood.
Thanks for watching Stephanie 😊👍🏻
I love turning pine woods
Only pine woods?
@@JackMackWoodturning Nope I do both hardwoods and soft woods. Resin I like to to pine is because not only is it very beautiful but some pine types have tons and tons of branch knots
Whoa! The grain is quite special ever. And, you formed the log like a fountain base (laying on pillar) that normally was decorated in old European gardens.
Could you add a fountain in this piece, and take photo of the final outcome? Thanks.
I don’t have the piece now I’m afraid 👍🏻😊
...well, the name of the vid caught my eye and I wondered what it was...then I read the description and found it was a type of wood. Never heard of it so I looked it up (I seem to do that with a lot of your vids...😉)...interesting tree...but it sure makes a beautiful platter!!! At first I thought you were going to turn away all the wood...then realized you were making a pedestal...it looks amazing!...👍👍👍
Thanks. So glad you enjoyed it
Gorgeous!
Awesome job
Thanks Curtis. Glad you enjoyed it buddy 😉👍🏻
Very nice!
Cheers Tim, thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
Beautiful piece, elegant lines in the base really show your skill!
Thanks a lot David. Glad you liked it mate 😁👍🏻
Съвършено изваени класически форми. Много вкус и красота. Поздравления за прекрасния резултат !!! Поздравления за големите Ви умения !!!
I’m sorry I can’t translate this comment
Nice job Jack.
Cheers 👍🏻
Beautiful pedestal bowl.
Cheers jack 👍🏻
Beautiful wood grain combination of amazing project.
😊👍🏻
It’s amazing what makes most of it so beautiful from just being seen as hardwood
I have been a subscriber for awhile, but just now saw this video. I have turned Norfolk Island Pine, but not a big piece. This is just such a great work, another reason you're one of favorites to watch.
Dammm fine pedestal bowl, congratulations, stay safe
Thanks Beverly. 😊

Good job
Cheers for watching Gary, glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
Not experienced at all about woodturning, watching this video is like a thriller. A hundred times I thought "stop now, it already has such a nice form" but no.......cut cut cut cut.
I assume you have the form to achieve complete in your mind, or is it also more taking shape during the proces? Very beautiful, inspiring. A museum piece in my opinion.
I see there is a Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia PA. Interesting, have to go once upon a time. Wish you the very best and far more beautiful creations. Greetings from The Netherlands. Land of clogs. Among other things.
😊
Thanks Ernst, much appreciated. I do have an idea of form before I begin removing wood, but what I reveal is what truly dictates the final shape. Thanks for watching 👍🏻😉
Nice!
😊👍🏻
Stunning piece of wood alot of waste though especially when it was such a beautiful piece of wood
Cheers Paul, when people say “a waste of wood” I always like to hear your suggestion for how to utilise the piece of wood.
What are your suggestions?
Cheers
@@JackMackWoodturning you know how expensive wood is more so if it's exotic wood I know sometime when creating something waste is expected sad to say what I have done sometimes to save wood is cut the blank down on Bandsaw or use a waste blank and turn project leaving a small blank attached to waste block lovely work though
Hi Paul, thanks for your reply man.
I appreciate what you are saying, when possible I would trim pieces off on the bandsaw especially if they are able to be reused. In this case I cut the knots off the outer edge of the log when getting it down to size. I use these for lids on small boxes. Unfortunately due to the form I was creating with this piece there is no safe way to remover the wood that was turned way to form the pedestal.
The other way to go would be to turn the bowl and the pedestal from two separate pieces and join them. In this case I wanted the grain and colour to run uninterrupted through the entire piece.
👍🏻👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning yeah sometimes waste is inevitable I agree when turning something that you want as one rather than two stuck together there is going to be a waste you know woods expensive and like this piece beautiful always a shame to end up with a pile of shavings
I find that shavings are only waste if you waste them. I produced about 10 cubic yards per month ( full time turner) that go off to a local community farm with very low funding, the shavings are used for animal bedding and then composted for use on their vegetable garden.
Keeps all that carbon locked up..
fortunately I don’t pay a great deal for wood and I only turn trees that have grown locally to me. 😊👍🏻
So beautiful 💜💜💜
Thank you 😊👍🏻
Bom dia que linda peça os desenhos ficaram maravilhoso parabéns abraços de SP Brasil.
just a piece of nature to share hopefully it wont twist as it dries. excelent work
It was dry before turning mate 😊👍🏻
Wow😳😍, the result is quite amazing 👏👌💞👍‼️
Thanks. I appreciate you watching 👍🏻😊
Very nice! Surprised it dried without splitting with all of that pith.
The pith on monkey puzzle is non existent.. the tree has a hollow down the centre. 😊👍🏻
Love watching you work...and with such beautiful results. ❤️
Thank you Mandy 😊👍🏻
Well done. That was a lot of wood to cut away.
😊👍🏻
The way you hold and control the curves is impressive. 🍺
Thanks Harrzack. Much appreciated buddy 😉👍🏻
Really love n like to watch your videos may god bless you 👍
👍🏻
Jack thanks for making an interesting base it isn't just plain. And I like the wood grain. Nice piece 👌

Thanks Susie. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻☺️
why is this so underrated? i think that's a great hard job! :)
😊👍🏻
You find the most amazing pieces of wood!
The wood always does the majority of the work.. all I have to do is shape it. 😊
Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
Such a massive piece. Cannot wait to work on pieces like this. Fantastic job.
Thanks for watching buddy 😊
Absolutely stunning…very talented!
Thank you. I appreciate you watching
Beautiful platter Jack 😁👍🏼👏
Thanks japie, glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻

Wow! What an interesting piece of wood! Great job in bringing out it’s beauty!
Cheers Doug, I appreciate you watching 👍🏻👍🏻
What amazing wood! Beautiful piece!
Thanks Beatrice. It’s very striking wood.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻
I would like to see how you got rid of the tenon on the bottom? Very nice work, it inspired me to try to think more out of the box while turning. Awesome!
Great stuff Harry. Always good to experiment with new ideas if they are safe. Thanks for watching 😉👍🏻
I like the design concept for the branch whorl. Great result 😎
Thank you. I appreciate you watching 🤙🏻
Beautiful piece of timber. You did it justice, nice work 👍🏽😊
Thinks mark. Appreciate you watching buddy 😊👍🏻
As always, great stuff. Thanks again.
Cheers for stoping by again Randy 👍🏻
That wood is amazing, you really nailed it!
Thanks a lot Alice. Much appreciated 😁👍🏻
That looks amazing!❤️👍
I wonder how that tree looked before cut down!
Later edit:
Ok, I've searched monkey puzzle tree on google! Now I know why that piece of wood looks like that👍
I started with a cross section, bark included but getting it down to a size that would fit on the lathe would have made for a pretty boring start to the video. It’s always difficult to decide which pieces of the process to show and what could be boring. 🤣
Thanks for watching mate. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning Yes I understand. What is boring for some is interesting for others. 😂
It’s a fine line 😆
Interesting wood. I am not familiar with it. Beautiful bowl with a lovely finish!
Thanks Rebecca, to be honest it’s not the nicest wood to work with but it does have some striking features because of the way the tree grows.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Stunning. 👍
Thanks Kevin. Much appreciated 👍🏻😁
Beautiful piece
Thanks Lillie 😊
Just beautiful.
😊👍🏻
What an incredible piece of wood! Well done mate
Thanks for watching Haydn. 😊👍🏻

Thanks Douglas, I appreciate you following along. 👍🏻👍🏻
wow , the wood is a wonder, and the piece is really beautiful
Thanks Joyce. Glad you enjoyed it
A statement piece. Very nice, Jack!
Thanks Clayton, I appreciate you watching. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nice work. We get this wood here in the Northwest often although mine never look this nice.
Thanks for watching gene, it’s very nice looking wood but it’s not very nice to turn, mainly because to achieve this effect you need to turn them in an end grain orientation, and that just never fun 😆
Piękna robota 👋👍🤗
Beautiful piece, I'm not good on a lathe, but I do enjoy making furniture and reproducing antiques. You are very talented, keep them videos coming I'll be waiting my friend . Be safe .
Cheers Ken. Thanks for following along buddy.
Really beautiful piece, thanks for the vid! 👍
Cheers Paully 😊👍🏻
Cool video - but I was wondering all along what a monkey puzzle was and how you turn one. Only at the end did I figure out there is actually a tree called monkey puzzle! Very nice platter though.
Great work
Thanks Robert. I appreciate you watching 😊👍🏻
The fast-forwarded power chisel sounded like Animal Crossing dialogue.
😂 nice observation 👍🏻😉
Nice bro😍😍😍
Thanks man. Appreciate you watching 🤙🏻
Браво мастеру!!!!!
beautiful!
Cheers Matt 😊👍🏻
کارش ریبا بود ممنون
Very nice
😊👍🏻
sehr schön 🤩
👍🏻
Beautiful. I would have turned the base out of something else and made a set of dishes out of what you turned into
wood chips.
Cool… but I don’t think that part of the monkey puzzle makes for very good bowls, extremely light weight and soft wood.. plus it was in the end grain orientation so wouldn’t make the best bowls either. 😊👍🏻.
@@JackMackWoodturning I was just trying to suggest a way to not turn beautiful wood into wood chips.
Carry on young man.
Beautiful ..👏👏👏 Very good your piece Jack!!!🇧🇷
Thanks 👍🏻😊
A real corker that one, Jack. Well turned pall :-)
Cheers Bryan, glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching 😊
@@JackMackWoodturning And it was too early in the morning to spell "pal" correctly! DUH!
