  • One cube becomes a vase with 6 wings and 3 feet!
Thank you all so much for watching! Yes, another month rolls by and my hopes for a quicker project turnout were dashed... but that's my life right now. On the bright side, I got a new camera after the old one stopped focusing on objects more than 5 feet away. Let me know if you like the new picture!
This is my 29th filmed project. I had been wanting to try another cube theory project, but the amount of wasted wood from the typical cube turning drives me nuts. So, I chose to waste resin instead... literally. It started with a horrible miscalculation, in which I mixed exactly twice as much resin as I needed, and when I realized I had a bucket of resin left over and a ticking clock, it was too late to do anything about it. In fact, I tried mixing in more pigment and before I knew it the mixer pulled out a glob of curing resin. Check out my Instagram (@adamsen_woodcraft) for the pic. Anyway, the project went fairly easily until I decided to use lacquer as the final finish. Well, it's getting too cold in Maine for lacquer to cure properly, and it got somewhat cloudy. I don't think the final finish is horrible, but it isn't ideal. I simply ran out of the time and patience required to fix it.
Again, thank you all for watching. I appreciate your comments, even though I can't respond to all of them. You are the best audience anyone could wish for!

I am completely in awe. To be able to "see" where to cut when the spinning blurs the shape so that it looks you're cutting in nothing... It is simply awesome, how you must see the final shape in your mind... Beautiful... It's more than craftsmanship, it's pure artistry.

With other turners I can usually figure out what they are doing and how it will turn out. Your work is quite different. I can never seem to work out what the finished project will look like. That is not a complaint but a complement. I love your work and I love waiting until the end to see what it is that you've done. You are wonderfully creative. I tip my hat to you sir!

Wow! The resin adds a whole new dimension to the wood and I really like what you did for the base.
Last week I turned a bowl just like this out of cedar. But, I turned the bottom flat. I wish I had seen this video to do the same. And, I did not use resin. Now, I need to look at doing another bowl using resin. My cedar bowl is just a hunk of wood that looks nice, but yours is much more interesting. Thanks for the new idea and inspiration. I’ll send ya pictures once I do another in the next few days. Now, off to Dallas to buy some resin.
BTW...I still standby my past comments that you are definitely turning into one of the premier wood turners. You always turn something interesting. And your video intros are wonderful. God has blessed you with some nice talents. I am happy to see that you are not letting them go to waste.

I love the unexpected. I'm a weaver, and the grid-like structure of threads on a loom does not want to produce curves, so that's what I love to do: make curves on a loom. Here is the polar opposite. A lathe doesn't want to make corners and angular wings. But here you've done just that. And what glorious wings!!

Hah yeah, that threw me for a loop too. I watched through the whole thing and still was "wait how did it go to three corners" before going back and noticing that the offset did that.

That's one of the best, most unique turned pieces I've seen. Amazing work.

Your videos are so wonderfully soothing, and the products you create are lovely. I feel your sound design really deserves commendation, because you've picked the music choices well, and you found a wonderful balance for the sound of the lathe. Most other woodturners, the sound of the tools against the wood is grating to the ear, but you've managed to find a sweet spot with it.
(All that, and you have notably sexy hands, but that's secondary to the quality of your work.)

I was surfing you tube and found your videos. I find them very relaxing and peaceful. Your work is gorgeous and the videography is exceptional. I subscribed and am going to start binge watching your channel. As Joshua said below, your work is spectacular,

This has blown me away. I've been watching more and more of your videos just because they are interesting and soothing. Well that and your work is amazing. This though, this I was not expecting; it is fabulously creative. I love it. It showcases your talent, but also your ability to think way outside the box. I love it.

Your works on here are so very different from what I've seen many other woodturners to. Moreover, when I go back to your other videos, I can clearly see you approach each piece as an artist, rather than just a project. You go back, change things, mess around a bit until it feels right.
    Subbed.

The new camera picture is just fine. As for the wings going in different directions.... I'm still trying to get my head around that. Like the colours in the resin and I have subbed to Instagram, just had to have a look at the issues you had.
All I can say about the finish is that it looks pretty good from this side of youtube.

Hi David, I have watched you turn 2 of these now and on both occasions I have thought, never in a month of Sunday's will I ever be able to do that. It is just astonishing David. When you were pouring the resin I though this is going to look amazing. I wasn't wrong. Brilliant David. Take care. Cheers, Huw

Earth meets Cosmos! Incredible. I just watched you make this and I still can’t understand how you made it! I call that magic! I love how the two disparate materials look like they are simultaneously attracted and repelled by one another. All that tension captured in the wavy line of the living edge of the wood. Choosing to put the blue on the top makes it “heavenly” whereas had it been on the bottom, we might be led to think more of a cork on the ocean, perhaps. Just stunning! Congratulations!
