Woodturning - The Knuckle Burl
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn an air dried large Knuckle of Ash Burl into a bowl.
When woodturning a piece like i find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl, but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.

My phone is apparently smarter than I am at this point. It saw my comment about burl being my favorite and it has shown me several videos with burl in them. Very beautiful bowl!

Nice bowl! A large, open bowl, like this one, is hard to find! I'm part of a large family, with growing children, who eat lots of fruit. This type of bowl would suit us admirably! Well done!

Hi, I'm new to your site. My name is Don Adams, I'm a Retired, Disabled former Senior Master of Art in South Australia (teacher) where I majored in Sculpture (mainly in wood) & Design & I m not a wood- turner. I am an avid follower of wood turning & chainsaw sculpture because it helps me relax a little & helps me forget my constant pain temporarily. I find this bowl quite delightful in shape, the grain of the burl is also delightful & I love the bark inclusions. Great stuff, Don from South Aust.

It seems like half the trick with these big transformations is finding the center of mass for the log.
Have you tried any woodturning ??
@@JackMackWoodturning I haven't! I've just seen how you set things up in your videos and that these asymmetrical pieces sometimes don't spin dead center when you're starting out.

Do you happen to use other exotic woods, such as zebrawood, purpleheart or koa?
I tend to stick with local, responsibly sourced wood. Limits the species I use as I am up North in UK. 😊👍🏻

Jack the power carver you sometimes use seems a good tool. What brand is it? Would you recommend it?
Hey. I definitely would not. But for the time being I’m stuck with it until I find a better version. This one is sold by Axminster tools her in the uk and like most of the gear they sell it’s overpriced and under achieving. Made to look the part rather than do it’s one job, cheap materials used and shoddy manufacturing.
It spits black grease out the nib and all over your work piece. Not every time, but you can be sure it will do it on that lovey bright white piece of figured maple.
When I find a worthy one il be sure to sing and dance about it.

You are an amazing artist, but it would be helpful if you added a few words to explain what finish you are using and the procedure involved.
Thank buddy. I don’t have time to make educational videos unfortunately. These entertainment videos are made in my very limited spare time from running a very busy woodturning business. I wish I didn’t have to make a living and I could make UA-cam videos all day long, but alas, the bills need to be paid.

This bowl was sanded to 600p, then burnished with wire wool at high speed.
I then apply a home made shellac sealer, once dry I cut the sealer back with fine wire wood at low speed then apply 3 coats of high quality danish oil.
I hope this helps.
