This isn't over! The co-conspirators have not been caught and Suirei is missing. I'm sure it'll come back around. I'm not too sure on what drug Jinshi is taking to "suppress his manhood" or what exactly he meant by that. I will revisit this in the future.
This is the detail of Jinshi's drug to suppress manhood -taken from the light novel- that somehow didn't make it to the anime: "The mixture contains a powdered variety of potato imported from another land; one with a very particular side effect. The potato flour was just one of several ingredients Jinshi had and Gaoshun had to take on daily basis." So it's safe to say the potato starch Maomao fetched on the other day is one of the ingredients to make Jinshi's drug. Hope this will narrow down your search!
Potato Flour was believed to be able to suppress male hormones. This was done to emulate the effects of being castrated so no one got suspicious that he wasn't a eunuch. Suppression of hormones of course could have the effect of making him look more feminine in a similar way that Ah-duo losing her uterus made her look and behave more masculine over time. This is why Jinshi is so "beautiful". There are of course other components to the medicine, but that's the one we were told about in the series.
@@raeveii Yeah. Knowing how knowledgable Maomao is in medicine, I think Maomao failed to notice its health properties because she has no doubt in her mind that Jinshi is a real eunuch 100%. If she were a little bit skeptical abt Jinshi's identity, she would've catch on a lot quicker 😂
Still surprised that he isn't actually a eunuch as well. But nice to know the guy has some family, makes him more human somehow and less likely to be the bad guy in all this. Not to mention he tends to be more realistic to Maomao's needs, which is why Maomao likes Gaoshun and maybe has gets some fatherly vibes from Gaoshun.
Don't forget she has her familial father's expertise in the field of medicine on top of her biological father's gift for political intrigue. (I think it'd be even more extreme if she'd been raised by both men instead of sheltered from the palace for so long.)
Her biological father's madness and familial fathers medical education make for one scary.... person? It's hard to call Maomao that when she's hysterically laughing like that.
A few episodes back when Lakan mentioned that he couldn't force Jinshi to give him Maomao, it was heavily implied (and Jinshi even thought to himself) that Lakan knew who Jinshi really was. Maomao believed the metalworker died of lead poisoning since he worked with lead all the time, but it was never confirmed in the episode. The poison Suirei used most likely didn't "stop" her heart. There are drug combinations that can reduce the heart rate to the point that it doesn't even feel like it's pumping, but it is moving just enough blood for a person to actually be alive. Back in the 80s, 90s, and even early 2000s, there were stories of people who wake up in a morgue after being "Dead" for hours because their heart seems to have stopped, but their vital functions had dropped to a point that they were practically undetectable. This is called Lazarus Syndrome. "Jinshi the Eunuch" is 24, this seems to imply that Gaoshun was correct that Jinshi is actually as old as Basen (19), but that he claims to be 24 to hide his age so people don't connect him to events that happened 19 years prior. The medicine in part contained the Potato Flour Maomao picked up a few episodes back. The way it is supposed to suppress his "Manhood" is similar to what happened when Ah-Duo lost her uterus. It triggers a change in the hormone balance that would cause Jinshi to have less testosterone so his skin looks smoother, his features more feminine, etc. This is to emulate the removal of the testicles during castration. In Ah-Duo's case she gradually looked and acted more masculine after she lost her uterus. Which is why Maomao thought the two looked so much alike and why Jinshi would look good in a dress. The scene where Jinshi is thinking about the Empress Dowager and Ah-duo does seem to indicate that he suspects the babies might have been swapped, but he doesn't seem to know and doesn't seem to want to think about it. Something that is made more clear in the manga than in the anime: The Emperor spends a lot of time with his daughter, which is unusual as princesses were usually viewed only as tools for potential political marriages. Just a little thing, but it makes the scene even more adorable than it was, because it shows how much the Emperor cares for his daughter.
The attempt probably wasn't against "Jinshi". It was probably against the "Imperial Brother". I don't think the court recognizes them as being the same person.
Yeah imperial brother is after all a heir to the throne until there is male child of Emperor. If the new concubines family is aiming for the throne and going to be ruthless, they might be going after all male heirs of the Emperor to clean their path to the power. Of course concubine Lahan needs to give birth to prince as well.
18:32 What is more significant in this revelation is that Jinshi is only 1 year older than Maomao. 23:29 It was hinted in previous episode that Meimei might have someone who might buy her out.
@@faysmitten not sure if you've already figured it out but I'll reply anyway It's been over a year at least since Maomao got kidnapped and sold to the palace She started the series at 17, so timeline wise she'd be 18 minimum By that account "Jinshi" started the series at 18 and is now 19
7:42 ep16 at 13:00 suggested that the metalworker died of lead poisoning from his solder. He may have been poisoned with something that produces the same symptoms as lead poisoning.
Re: knowing about a certain very important person, in the previous season, during that outdoors tea party, it is noted that it is known the Emperor has a younger brother, but one who is "sickly" and rarely shows himself in public
It was mentioned in that episode that the Emperor's brother had been there until just a few minutes prior, and that Jinshi was missing at the time. When Jinshi showed up his clothes were disheveled and Maomao thought an officer had accosted him. Make of that what you will.
Regarding Jinshi's medicine, it's mentioned in the light novel and manga that it's a weird tasting liquid made out of potato flour which Suiren asked Maomao to procure in fact, just a couple episodes ago. It has the unique effect of suppressing a male's manhood when taken consistently. In Jinshi's case, it's most likely his libido since he is surrounded by women all the time and it would be bothersome to constantly keep himself in check when dealing with all of the affairs in the rear palace, especially since the public thinks he is a eunuch. It would be extreme cause of concern if Jinshi just gave in to the whims of the women desiring him considering his status.
The effect is actually to suppress male hormones so he looks more feminine. It's to emulate the effects of castration among the eunuchs. A similar effect happens in women who lose their uterus, which causes a change in their hormone balance that can cause them to develop more masculine features and behave more masculine. That "medicine" is why he looks so "Beautiful".
@@marielblanco7013 Correct. There certainly have been times in later volumes of the light novel where he did a bad job in controlling his desires. And I'm pretty sure another reason he is so infatuated with Maomao has to do with all the horrifying experiences he's had with women as a fake eunuch. (Poor guy lol) Females (and even males) are obsessed with him with some cases going so far as to surprise him in his bedroom and guards having to forcefully take them out. That made Jinshi develop a false sense of pride which let him think he knows and understands how women operate and that he can bend all of them with no effort. Then comes Maomao completely shattering every assumption, prejudice and mental image he'd developed of the opposite sex. A girl who is indifferent enough to be able to look at him like an insect and, most importantly, is able to completely see through the mask and view him for who he is...I mean, it becomes quite clear after a while why he adores her so much.
@@key-chan5563 agree all you say. The guy is literally suppressing his libido but Maomao still manages to excite him in the weirdest of ways. That being said, Maomao is also being purposefully stupid at times, even now its still implied she doesn't know Jinshi's true status. But I think it maybe because of her own psychological makeup due to rejection by her own mother that screwed up her own ability to receive and give love. Sigh, really pulls my heart out of my chest. I hope we get some clarification on what really happened between Lakan and her mother, Lakan looks like a pure asshole at this time but at the same time on some level, took care of Maomao and maybe her mother by being a regular at the brothel. But based on the look in the end of last episode: probably more going on than I think and maybe he isn't as bad as he looks. I still think he is an ass for helping create the situation where Maomao got hurt, even if he wasn't malicious.
24:03 Yeah, the people shouldn't know about "Jinshi, the Eunuch". But they do know about the "Jinshi, the Emperor's Younger Brother" who rarely appears in public and whose name is unknown. So, the target wasn't specifically "Jinshi, the Eunuch", but the unnamed "Jinshi, the Emperor's Younger Brother", who as far as the assassin group knew regularly does Mid & Higher Important Ceremonies.
By 'supress his manhood' Jinshi means something along the vein of modern Spironolactone to prevent the masculinization oh his features, hinting that he's not, in fact, a eunuch, because if he didn't take something for that it would become more obvious that his body was still producong testosterone properly
A total miracle that she still is even functioning from the hit of that iron club(?) and honestly wish they would’ve put the punch instead of changing it to the club it would’ve made WAY more sense how she even got up right after that.
Kind of wish she'd stayed injured for at least a few episodes. They got her right back on her feet even before the episode ended as if knowing serious happened to her. Which I find quite disappointing.
I literally just started reading the LNs, and just read the chapter where Maomao describes herself as what would be called in the west a mad scientist. And then I saw Maomao’s evil laugh and couldn’t agree more.
@@TheOnlyTrueDedicated ur gonna love the light novels i think that’s where the world building aspect of it really shines and things start to tie together
You don't have to stop the heart completely, just slow it to a couple of beats per minute. That way anyone taking a pulse, unless it was poorly timed wouldn't feel anything, or if they did, they'd just chalk it up to hope as they wouldn't get confirmation immediately after.
I am thinking that the concussion may not have been that bad? If the guard went full-force, Maomao would probably be dead. I would like to reiterate a comment I read somewhere regarding Jinshi's slow walk while carrying the injured Maomao: a frantic Jinshi/high-status noble panicking for a low-status maid might lead to rumors that nobody probably wants (surely Maomao too, who always tried to avoid being caught up with nobilities' affairs). As for Lakan's reaction, I love how the look on his face can be interpreted in so many ways. Shock--for various reasons as already stated: shock that the danger Maomao faced was bigger than he anticipated; shock in the reveal that Jinshi was inside (although as a Strategist, he might have known); shock at the magnitude of the danger for both the noble and Maomao. Anger: at himself maybe(?) for having exposed his daughter to such a dangerous situation; anger at the guard for delaying Maomao's entry into the temple (and thus avoiding her leg injury or death); anger/jealousy at Jinshi for being so close to his daughter😅 I also read this in another comment section: apparently the walk scene and Lakan-face reaction scene are anime originals. The author of the novels apparently posted a comment somewhere that Lakan punished the guardwho hit Maomao, but eventually since the guard was diligent with his job, he rose back in his ranks.
Not super sure how related it is. But i think about Romeo and Juilet and my teacher telling us that at the time they could not detect the slowing of the heart where now with machines we can so people didn't know that people were alive once they took a drug to slow their heart rate down enough that you could not detect it by pulses
I think it doesn't really matter which child Jinshi is. If he is the Emperor's son or brother, he just seems to want a prince to be born so he can be cut loose and can then make his own life.
It matters though, it'd also explain why someone is trying to kill him. if he was "just" the emperor's brother (which is his official position, it seems) the moment a baby boy is born, he is no longer the next on the succession line and can move on with his life. if he was the emperor's older son , that is totally not the case. he would be the next in line, and even if he ditched that, it'd always be a shadow in a future emperors reign, with a possibility to overthrow the reign os a possible brother. I believe that's why someone is trying to kill him, someone wants to make sure their son is the only heir, and ain't taking any chances...
Nah i remember even when i read this i was like "dang i respect Suirei a lot tho😂 girl really made a whole plan, died, and then dipped" LMAO honestly if it wasn't for the cases Lakan gave Jinshi (and to Maomao indirectly), i doubt Maomao would ever discover the ritual plot
Lakan doesnt want to involve himself on this type of incidents, hence he usually finds a pawn to use and direct. He overheard lihaku solving the fire incident with the help of maomao, thats why he asked for more details on the helper. Sure enough he got the info that the helper was under jinshi and decided to kinda annoy jinshi a bit( add the fact that jinshi bought out maomao from the verdigris house). Lakan also approached Gaoshun about the seaweed case and he himself brought up the metalworker case to jinshi.
I think this is the second reference we’ve gotten to the previous empress dowager - the pedophile emperor’s mother, and the current emperor’s grandmother. Previously, we’d heard she was responsible for making Luomen a eunuch, now we hear that Loulan’s father is not someone to take lightly in large part because he was a favorite of hers. So she had a lot of power - presumably her son took the throne at an early age, and she was in charge for some time. We haven’t heard when she died, or when her son would’ve been of the right age to no longer need a regent. Seems like the more we learn about this family tree, the more questions it raises.
Spoiler: The previous Empress Dowager was referred to using a different term in the WN, LN, and Manga. The term is Empress Regnant. Regnant is used to refer to a person who has power in their own right. A Regent sits on the throne for another, a Regnant is the one on the throne. Like Queen Elizabeth was Queen Regnant, because it was her throne, not one she was managing while an underaged son grew up. This title of hers implies that the Emperor wasn't really the one in charge, and his mother was the one with the real power. The anime seems to be skipping this because the title is confusing, and the character really doesn't matter to the story as a whole.
@@roribeedm I ran a Google search on the WN, and there weren’t any hits for 女性天皇 (josei tennou), but there were several for 先の皇太后 (saki no koutaigou), the term I can hear in the dialogue here. I haven’t looked at manga raws, but I doubt I’d find “josei tennou” there either.
@@IZEASGT The characters to look for are 女帝, which is literally Woman Emperor. I've seen pronunciations for the character for woman including Jotei, Jousei, Jyotei. There are 6 different ways to write Emperor and they are all pronounced differently. 帝 is technically pronounced Tei on its own, but 女帝 becomes Josei Tenno even though Tenno is 天皇. There's also 皇后, エンプレス, 后, 中宮, which all mean Empress. 女帝 specifically can be used to refer to a female leader of a nation other than Japan. Some of the other terms only refer to the Japanese Empress. Sessho would be 摂政 for Regent. Kouotaigou 皇太后 is Queen Mother or loosely Empress Dowager, but Dowager can also be written 寡婦 or 後室. This is why you can't use most translation sites to translate Japanese. There are too many different ways to write things and too many different ways to read things resulting in too many different pronunciations.
Incidentally, the security guard who punched Maomao last week, the original author told us what happened afterwards. He gets harassed quite a bit by Lakan for punching Maomao, but he doesn't get fired, and it seems that he eventually gets a promotion by the time Lakan gets tired of him. Certainly, unlike the other guards who failed to stop Maomao from entering without a permit, he was the only one who properly stopped Maomao from entering and explained that if he had a complaint, he should apply for it in writing, which was the perfect way to handle the situation. * The only problem I dare to raise is that it was the wrong emergency response. It is good that he was properly evaluated and promoted because of this originally excellent performance. However, Lakan's relentless harassment caused a pit in his stomach. 5:21 Basen should be thanking Maomao for saving the Lord he serves, but for some reason he yelled at Maomao because the Lord was targeted. He needs to broaden his perspective and grow in spirit a little more. 14:00 As for the drug that Suirei allegedly used, I am just guessing since no specific name of the drug was given, but it is probably a drug that causes a state of suspended animation with ingredients similar to anesthesia. Incidentally, there is an anesthetic said to be made from thornapple, and it is called "Mafeisan". It was created by Hua Tuo, a legendary pharmacologist in the late late Han Dynasty of China. The Maomao’s world is a fictional world, so it is difficult to date it, but it is highly possible that anesthesia existed around the 2nd century because Hua Tuo is said to have died in 208 AD. Incidentally, it would have been more difficult to handle than today's anesthesia because it was highly toxic. 15:32 Tanya Degurechaff(The Saga of Tanya the Evil) This laugh was said to be Tanya's because the voice actor is the same Aoi Yūki. Indeed, this evil laugh is very similar. 18:47 Jinshi is publicly a 24-year-old eunuch, but it was revealed that he is actually a 19-year-old man who works in the rear palace on medication that temporarily suppresses male function. Basen is also the son of Gaoshun and a childhood friend the same age as Jinshi. Like Basen, Gaoshun also goes to great lengths to protect Jinshi by taking drugs to temporarily suppress his male function and working as a eunuch in the imperial palace.
While it's not easy to tell time in this show, I'm pretty sure that around two years has passed since the story started, and Gyoukuo's daughter was 3 months old when MaoMao arrived at the Rear Garden. So that would put her roughly at about two and a half years old give or take a couple months. Maomao was at the Rear Garden for about a year, she was definitely there for 10 months by the time she first went home, and after she got back it was still cold enough for that servant to freeze and drown. It appears to be spring when they're cleaning out the Garnet Pavilion so make it around a year, maybe just after, then Maomao was fired. Not sure how long she was a courtesan but when Jinshi came to buy her it was cold enough for him to be wearing a coat, so maybe the Fall? She studied for awhile and failed the exam, then Laulan arrived when it was winter, so say another 3 months. We then were told this episode that the Emperor has visited Laulan 10 times, and that he visits every 10 days so it's been 90 days (count first time as 0) so 3 more months making this Spring, so just over 2 full years.
Lakan does know who Jinshi is. He indirectly also told Jinshi that after the case of the blacksmith inheritance and Jinshi even made a mental note that Lakan knows.
Interesting thoughts about the anesthesia. I was thinking that being deprived of blood flow and oxygen for so long would cause permanent damage to the brain, but I suppose in a fictional setting, they might use herbs that lower metabolism so that her oxygen consumption would be low enough that damage won't occur. And back then the technology to check vital signs would be to check for a pulse and breathing, which could be undetectable even with a slightly beating heart, especially if they only check the radial pulse and didn't perform an autopsy.
I was waiting for your reaction just from the story aspect for this one after I saw it. A lot more connections being made. A a counterpoint to what you said, I do believe he knew Jinshi would be there. He had hinted at assassinating him in early episodes.
Hi. Thanks for your reaction, yours is the first I’ve seen after watching the episode. Man I am glad Maomao is recovering nicely despite her wounds, even going straight back to detective mode. Heck she is even showing her true enjoyment now in front of Jinshi and co. Maybe she is subconsciously trusting them more and putting less effort into maintaining her mask of indifference. Man, her evil laugh was fantastic, though it’s more like she was ecstatic meeting someone who could be her intellectual equal as a woman. This episode was a bit confusing though, I thought we were 90% sure that Jinshi is Ah Duo’s son and therefore the current emperor’s son, although officially he is the emperor’s brothers. But this episode, from Jinshi’s point of view, he also makes it ambiguous and doesn’t say for certain whether the Empress Dowager son is really Jinshi or swapped with Ah Duo who eventually became Jinshi. Maybe the anime is going in different direction as all the LN/manga readers all affirmed that z Jinshi is Ah Duo’s son. Oh well, as Maomao and Jinshi said, useless speculation. Either way Jinshi is still on the Imperial Family. Regarding the medicine, I don’t know for sure but perhaps it is to make him PHYSICALLY look like a eunuch. In Chinese shows, Eunuchs normally have high pitch voices and no facial hair. Whatever the medicine does, in my head I think it makes him more effeminate looking and sounding to maintain the illusion. Man I love seeing Gyokuyou’s but I just had a horrible thought: if Gyokuyou gives birth to a son, she might end up on the target list of whoever is doing all this, nvm the political implications of a foreign princess giving birth to the imperial heir: MAOMAO, PROTECT HER! Lastly, glad that we have some confirmation that the Emperor is not just a lewd old man and is more savvy than he seems. That part where he played a bit with Gyokuyou’s daughter Xiallong made him look nice. Damn his father’s pedophilic nature though, I think the emperor keeps Lishu around so that Lishu won’t be used as a sex toy by someone else too, which explains why doesn’t touch Lishu. Man things are about to get hot
16:00 I can't help but imagine Maomao and Mayuri Kurotsuchi have the same backstory before they become the mad scientists they are on the later parts of their life. 18:04 Is there a certain drug that can suppress testosterone? That would explain Jinshi not growing facial hair and successfully pulling off the Eunuch disguise. 21:41 Gyokyo: I'm pregnant Maomao: Ah, as expected of my Ace Student
About the weapon that hit Maomao's head: That is a sword-shaped mace called a jian 鐧. IRL, it looks like a sword but instead of a blade it's a ribbed cylinder or a cross-shaped bar (think a giant Phillips screwdriver but the shape goes all the way down). The weight is also about 5-10 times of a regular sword (around 5 and up to 10kg!) and therefore is classified as a sword-breaker. So in short, one hit across smashes skulls. And yes, there are numerous UA-cam videos in English covering the weapon. Some of them quality Canadian-produced.
Jian can refer to multiple different Chinese weapons. The most common is a long, thin, straight sword like what was used in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The Jian Sword Breaker, which you were referring to, is long, thin 4 sided metal rod used to break a Jian sword. What was used in the anime was an Iron Rod Club similar to the Japanese Tetsubo. The Tetsubo is about 20 times thicker than a Jian Sword Breaker, and designed to crush armored targets rather than break a blade.
I don't think there is any need to actually stop the heart and then restart it. Wouldn't it be enough to make the heartbeat weak enough so that someone distraught with grief would miss the very weak heartbeat? Typically when the whole "faking death with drugs" cliche is used in any pop culture that is the angle, a drug that doesn't quite stop the heart but makes the heartbeat either very slow or very weak so that on a quick inspection it may appear if there is no pulse, but would be quickly revealed to be false on close examination. That's another reason why the doctor being in love with Suirei was important to the plot like Maomao said
The resurrection drug (sounds like Romeo and Juliet) that is a blend of drugs. Although I am not sure her heart fully stopped or rather would be very weak. Just enough to keep body and brain alive.
I think that the indication is that it's something like a strong anesthetic and that the Doctor doing the autopsy kinda half-assed it because of his grief and didn't *really* check all that hard. So while her heart may have slowed down enough and was weak enough that he couldn't find it.
maybe supress his manhood means some sort of pre historical prevention, maybe he cant get it up or something? would make it hard to have it going, or maybe some sort of hormon influecing drug?
If you had the choice of being beheaded or a risky resurrection drug, I think the drug was a better bet and it looks like she won the bet. That’s how Maomao put it in the LN, and I think the anime (will have to go back to check). The resurrection drug just slows the heart down to the point where the heartbeat could be missed. Still risky. So Suirei is still at large, and the issue is ongoing. And it sounds like Gaoshun has three sons, and one of them is the same age as Jinshi. (Spoiler) Somewhere far into the future (season 5?), we are going to meet Chue. We need more seasons! The VA for this one, I cannot wait. Think classic Chinese like VA, that’s somewhat what I hear every time I read Chue’s lines. Comic relief is part of her what she’s like, but much more on the serious side.
didn't they also say in the LN that the reason it isn't being fatal is because the two separate poisons in the "resurrection drug" neutralise one another after a while?
There are a few extra scenes in the anime so far that weren't originally. In the light novel that are small spoilers. With only four episodes left in the season. They probably aren't going to answer all the questions. As this season is the first two Light novels.
0:40 Idk if it helps at all but in the manga, Jinshi actually ran to get MaoMao to the infirmary. They had him do the slow walk in the last episode strictly for dramatic effect 18:11 Also, the “manhood-suppressing” medicine that Jinshi is taking is the potato flour medicine that MaoMao had picked up for him the other day. For some reason the anime left out that line from the manga/light novel
I wonder if there's a low enough level of heart-beat that can avoid brain-damage, but still go undetected by someone just feeling for a pulse by-hand? I'm not actually sure what limitations there may or may not be on searching for a pulse by-hand.
There is a traditional asian blunt force weapon that looked like that bat and it was made mostly out of wood at times with metal studs. If that thing was made out of metal i doubt any human would be able to swing it properly. Also both china and japan have slightly different looking interpretations of that weapon with different names
It isn’t explained how the metalworker died in the light novel, but Maomao suspected long-term lead exposure and observed that the youngest son was already displaying early symptoms. Given the wider conspiracy, though, it’s unlikely that lead poisoning alone is what took him out since what little we’re told about him mentions nothing that sounds like late-stage lead poisoning to me.
16:30 Since you noticed it, I can only say that your thoughts about Loulan are most probably true, but saying anything beside it would be a MAJOR spoier for the possible second season of the anime. I can only add that since they obviously hinted about Loulan here in this scene this early in the story, the second season, covering 3rd and 4th volumes of the LN (right now we are in the middle of the 2nd volume and the current season will end with it) must be already planned or in production, since this is a direct tie to the future events. This, or we will riot)))
The anime seems to be going off the manga rather than the LN, so there will probably be a short delay before season 2. Just to let the manga get far enough for them to use that content. Manga is at Volume 12 (chapter 63) with 7 additional chapters released beyond that, and this episode ended with the start of chapter 35. Probably going to end around Chapter 40 for this season, roughly, maybe.
Okay, could you hear me out? Back in the early episodes when Maomao asked Jinshi if there would be a time when she will be punishable by death, she would like to die from poisoning. And now back to this episode where the existence of resurrection medicine is known to Jinshi, Maomao, and Gaoshun, there is a chance that it will be used by them in the future. I don't want Maomao to be punishable by death but if so, I think Jinshi and Gaoshun will give everything they have just to acquire the medicine and give it to Maomao, and then let her escape once the medicine wears off. I might've thinking of it too much but it will be so cool if that happens. Ciao
From the painting the plant is in German called "Engelstrompete" (angels trumpet free translated) because of the poisonous caracteristics. For anesthesia in China I remember a scene from the k-drama Empress Ki, there someone should fake his dead to see who is his enemie and who not. For that they used cooked dry skin from poisonous toad with wine (I don't know if that really works but TCM or TKM has many weird things they do work not or not as expected... I'm no expert). Empress Ki plays from century ca. 1350.
Next episode is gonna be hilarious and I'm confident you'll like it. If the last few episodes are gonna be what i think it is, It'll be a very emotional
As I saw this episode and the previous couple of episodes, I believe Lakan is trying to, somehow, get to have a relationship with his daughter, but, as things have progressed, Lakan has an idea of what the plot is. Maybe Lakan has no complete knowledge of who Jinshi is, but he knows it’s someone of high rank. Somehow, Lakan can’t show his hand and is trying to get things done through MaoMao? Not sure MaoMao knows who that the “sister” in the Annex is her mother. As to who Jinshi is, from way early I have suspected he is royalty; given the troubled birth that her adopted father was involved in, Jinshi could be the emperor’s younger brother or his son. (Not going to say who I think he is for now, but I’m mostly convinced who he is.) As for Lakan, I believe he is trying to help his daughter, just needs to do it in a way that benefits all…?
Im also just realizing now that the random guy we see a lot in the scenes if the past cases looks a lot like the court lady- is it just me?? I only watch the anime so idk if it was just design choice or not(welp I answered my own question-)
I think the one being bought out might be the other one, meimei??(forgot her name) since she said that she was almost at age of retirement but it could also be pairin but only manga readers know so-
Funny coincidence i knew exactly what suirei did the moment maomao mentioned resurrection medicine. And its all because of romeo and Juliette as Juliette did the same thing😂
I have never believed Jinshi is a eunuch. It made no sense, especially that short scene where Jinshi is with the emperor talking about his mission. As to Loulan, given what little we know I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s part of the plot.
Wow a lot to digest. Ok a lot of links have been exposed and I think more to come. Lakan probably sent Lihaku to Maomao up to speed. Suirei has been exposed as maybe the leader and genius of the conspiracy, but it would make sense that she is working for someone else. Given the targets seem to be the Royal Family including Consorts. We finally learn even more about Jinshi deception. 1. The baby prince died and Jinshi knows this as well as the preferential treatment the previous Emperor and his mother gave to current Emperor’s consort contributed to her survival giving birth at such a young age and Ah-Duo’s suffering and injury. In these scenes we see the Prince, now current Emperor, sympathy for his dear friend and advisor Ah-Duo. 2. Jinshi observes how the current Emperor was repulsed by his father’s taking very young girls as consorts and his refusal to visit Lishu. Jinshi wonders what fate awaits Lishu - given the Emperor and Jinshi’s evident cherish of Lishu I suspect her fate may be to escape the Rear Palace to a more hospitable location and associates. 3. Jinshi and Gaoshun have been taking drugs to inhibit their male desires for many years, 5?, and two Jinshi ages are revealed that is his fake 24 as Rear Palace Eunuch and real age 19 now? Also Gaoshun is married has at least two sons with Basen being the younger. The older is married with one child. A new and powerful character is introduced as a favorite of the past dowager Empress and now while not embraced by current Emperor is someone everyone needs to be careful around including the Emperor and Jinshi. Things continue to get complicated with Gyokuyou being pregnant, but allows Maomao to return to the Jade Palace. I wonder if Maomao can get her adopted Dad to return as Rear Palace doctor - be a lot safer for the Consorts during pregnancy and birth. Finally, the new consort, Loulan is mysterious and a bit of a chameleon that neither the Emperor or Jinshi understand or even can describe. Even with visits every 10 days she shifts herself. What did her Lady in Waiting whisper to her?
about Loulan, her lady in waiting was either relaying the newest updates regarding the Suirei's issue or the anime wants us to think that, and it was simply an announcement of Jinshi's visit. Either way, Loulan's very suspicious, I can't help but think she dresses up to be able to pull a "Padmé Amidala" and switch with some lady in waiting when it pleases her, to do god knows what...
I will wonder if Suirei used disguises as a man to do the salt, seaweed, and metal mysteries. Also she seems to have had help that permeated the Outer Palace. So someone who is powerful was behind her and could help her escape and get the ceremony bureaucrat fired. She seems to be a valuable tool but not the power behind her.
It seems like it's more to emulate the physical effects of castration. Not just suppressing libido, but the production of testosterone as a whole. Make the skin smoother, features more feminine, etc. The reverse is what happened to Ah-duo, when she lost her uterus. Her hormones would have been off the normal balance resulting in her features becoming slightly more masculine, and her behavior changed. This is why Maomao thinks Jinshi would look good in a dress and Ah-duo looks good in more masculine clothes.
I was thinking this drug jad a ramp up ramp down effect. That after taking the poison let's say early effects are classic anesthesia like you described, but then the drug properties peak with a SLOWI G of the heart? I know there's substances that can depress heart rates riggt. And someone who is in a grief stricken. State may not be able to tell the difference in a severely slowed heart rate and a stopped heart? I'd guess this state can't last long and the heart rate and breathing g slowly increase as the poison wears off.... If the poison works like this it'd require a high level of knowledge about metabolic rates, poison absorption rate, and predictions as to when the ME would be checking the heart rate. Seems pretty far fetched to just wing it or guess as to the timing, but it's possible if the poison has a delayed ramp up and ramp down effect. If always if lol
There have been many cases of something called Lazarus Syndrome, where a person appears to be dead, with no vital signs, but then they wake up in the morgue. It's rare, but a known medical condition. There are mentions in history of drugs/poisons that can trigger a similar effect where the heart is basically slowed to the point that you can't even feel a pulse, but just enough blood flows to prevent brain damage. This is most likely what Suirei used. The "Resurrection Drug" would be something administered to counter the effect and bring the heart rate back to normal.
This is just my theory at least 1 of the members of conspiracy has to know who Jinshi is and that list of people has to be quite limited. My thinking is IF even the flare signaling incident is part of that, then someone from outside is connected and my sus is the father of the newest concubine and his motive is likely get every other potential throne candidate out of the picture which makes me think even the new concubine is part of it. On the other hand her behavior is quite strange since it looks like she wants the emperor not to touch her, constantly confusing him and looking like she dont care. But in my theory is a big IF.... and that he could have started only IF he was sure OR made sure that his daughter would become the new concubine.
I don't know if anyone else a problem with this or not, but can you do something abou the pot lights and window behind you. It tends you make you camera fade in a out a bit during your videos. It's a bit distracting.
Purely speculation on my side, never read the manga. But I think the courtesan to be bought out might be Mei Mei. From the previous episode it looks she is the one that entertains Lakan, whenever he comes over to sniff out Maomao and it looked like, she has developed feelings for him. Lakan might be buying her out to help him get close to Maomao. Just a guess 😁 Also Lihuakan overhearing this might make him assume its Pairin and do something stupid 😳
About her creepy smile and laugh, I can only say one think : Carefull Mao Moa, your Lakan is showing ^^' to find an example of the drug suirei used, you can look up voodoo zombies. I think this is what the show drew inspiration from. And the heart doesn't really stop, it just slows so much that it's not perceptible anymore but it beats jjjjuust enough to maintain the brain and vitals organs....... But yeah that's not without consequences. Even a few hours of this can have heavy repercusion on brains superior functions and other organs. And you missed an important info here, Jinshi isn't 24 yo. He's 19 but have to pretend to be older for..... stuff.... spoiler material stuff so don't count on me to tell you
I'm not a manga reader but there's a chance what Maomao say Gyokuyou getting pregnant are true...remember the episode where Maomoa, Jinshi & Gyokuyou talk about Aphrodisiac....I think Gyokuyou took some of it for herself and the emperor...her expression that day are interesting...Never thought It got this fast for her to be pregnant.
Gyokuyou has always been one of the Emperor's favourite concubines, alongside Lihua. He spends zero time with the underage Lishu (since he isn't a creep), and spends the bare minimum with any of his other concubines, so it honestly isn't too surprising. Not to mention that Lihua's lead poisoning might mean it will be hard for her to have another baby
No, Doc. It's not stopping the heart, it's to reduce the heart rate and pulse to such a level that most doctors wouldn't notice, it's not completely stopped. Thought I do think you'd need something to cut the effect as staying like that for time enough would surely kill you unless you are really cold to reduce cellular activity, though if your heart rate is so low, you'd probably be unable to keep your temperature stable and hypothermia would follow, so that could help reduce the cellular activity to certain extent.
@@DefinitivelyZach Again, risky move. This thing could easily kill her if not countered on time, as considering the reduced cellular activity, the liver would be in serious trouble to get rid of it on its own. I don't know if it exists, but the theory is plausible.
@@DefinitivelyZach hey. Shakespeare already used this type of poison in Romeo and Juliet and that was 1597. So this kind of medicine has been around for quite a long time. If not in actual existence , than in rumoured one for sure 🤣🤣🤣😜
Honestly, my _instinct_ for whatever Jinshi's taking is that it's more about preventing muscle relaxation of the penis, thus preventing erections, including ones that happen despite a lack of arousal. But that is purely speculation and I have no idea whether or not that sort of drug exists.
on a separate matter, it surprises me that Gaoshun is also most likely not a eunuch either and is taking the same medicine Jinshi takes to make himself more like a eunich physically, which I would take to mean more effeminate. It says here the other servant called Basen, is actually his youngest son, and that he has some grand children already. The way he talks, it sounds like it really is his kids, and not just adopted like some eunuchs do when they want to start a family. We know Gaoshun has been taking care of Jinshi since he was a child, but I thought only eunuchs could be servants to the family even if they are men. Looks like they;ve been pretending to be eunuchs for 5 years, ever since the current emperor was enthroned, and Jinshi suddenly appeared to become the chief manager of the concubine palace, effectively being the guard dog for his father's future kids and concubines. Looks a very long evil plot in the making though, possibly linked to the imperial succession. Somebody must have realised that Jinshi as the emperor's real son, would also be in line for the throne (normally the emperor's brothers/siblilngs wouldn't be in line unless they seize power). And therefore be targetted in all this. Crap, really worried for Gyokuyou now.
The Eunuch thing is only for the rear palace. It was said that for a male to enter the rear palace where all the consorts and ladies were, a man had to be either a member of the Imperial family or a Eunuch, so they wouldn't be tempted to touch the Emperor's women. Gaoshun also most likely isn't just taking the medicine to make himself appear to be a Eunuch, it's his job to act as a poison tester for Jinshi. As for the Emperor's brother not being in line to the throne, the current Emperor has no male heir. Until he has a son, his closest male relation would be the heir apparent/crown prince. This could be a brother, uncle, or grandfather.
@@roribeedm true, in addition to pretending to be a eunuch, Gaoshun is also the body guard/taster/personal attendant for Jinshi. in regards to the throne, assuming the villain knows about Jinshi's true parentage it gives the villain motive to kill Jinshi if he/she really wanted to remove EVERYONE currently in line for the throne, in order to set up his/her own candidate. No spoiler, but this is what I can come up with 1) Maybe another branch of the imperial family, like the grandfather of current emperor has another brother and in European terms, would be called a cadet branch. No indication of that in anime so far though. This happens quite a few times in history when the main imperial line dies out and they have to find another descendant of a common emperor. 2) Another family wants to marry into the imperial line and wants THEIR candidate to be give birth to the next emperor This unfortunately points to Loulan, but it looks like she hasn't made plans to seduce the emperor yet, even confusing him with different outfits and effectively cockblockign him. I'm not a reader of the LN, please don't spoil if I guess right, I like the speculation and discussion that comes with it.
Hang on .... so the current emporer's younger brother was born 10 years after him at the same time as his own first child by Consort Aduo ... which means he was 9 or 10 when that baby was conceived?! 😳
Loulan is daughter of important person. She may be compelled to be concubine to get a child and elevate her family. Also she seems to be a chameleon so each time seen she is different???
Loulan wears different styles of clothing and has a different hairstyle every day basically. In the episode we can see she is wearing a European style high waisted dress with her hair doubled up so it doesn't hang down too far. It also shows an Indian dress with a head covering, what appears to be a Mongolian dress with double braids, and some sort of double breasted kimono with her hair loose with a small top bun in cloth (a definite Japanese style). The Emperor can't get a grasp on who she is because of the fashion whiplash every time he sees her.
As good as the series is, I'd be surprised if we didn't get another season at least. Probably get a filler OVA or two as well. The manga sells incredibly well in Japan, the anime has been in the top 6 in Japan this season, there's plenty of potential for Chibi Nekomao merchandise. If the blueray sales are good that'd be everything Japanese studios are looking for when considering a second season. I would almost expect an announcement of season 2 at the end of the season 1 finale.
@@roribeedm I really hope so, and although the manga does not have enough material for a secoand season yet, we have the LIN to fall back on for at least 2-3 seasons, so yeah... it has everything it needs to have a second season. I hope htey don't do me bad this time
@@dayan5454 I would expect them to wait for the manga to reach a point they can make a full season from it. Considering this episode ended with the start of chapter 35, I expect the season will reach at least chapter 40. Volume 12 includes up to chapter 63, and there are multiple chapters past that that have been released individually. I expect within 2 years there will be enough chapters of the manga completed for a second season. They aren't likely to switch to using the LN or WN as source material, because there are some major differences with certain events in those that wouldn't fit with what they've released in the anime thus far.
Isn't the emperor around 37-38? How is that consider middled age? Unless back then people tend to die younger. For him to be only 37, he looks as old as a modern day 50 year old. 37 year olds now still look very young and still a prime age.
Keep in mind that modern medicine, moisturizers, vitamin supplements everywhere including in processed foods, better supply of food in general, have all lead to people looking younger. In the series, Suiren (Jinshi's handmaid) is 50 years old.
20:18 Mate, you still can't pronounce "dau-uh-jr" (dowager) worth a crap. Here's a whole page that tells you how to pronounce it right haha. Not doh-wah-jer, "dau-uh-jr".
Additional for the medicine that Jinshi took, it is mostly to shrink it down there for him to be a "eunuch" as based on the novel they just feel it down there to check if a guy is a eunuch or not.
The source readers are starting to get really obnoxious. Every comment section has someone outright spoiling, every clip has someone complaining about how the anime didn't faithfully reproduce manga panels.
This isn't over! The co-conspirators have not been caught and Suirei is missing. I'm sure it'll come back around.
I'm not too sure on what drug Jinshi is taking to "suppress his manhood" or what exactly he meant by that. I will revisit this in the future.
This is the detail of Jinshi's drug to suppress manhood -taken from the light novel- that somehow didn't make it to the anime:
"The mixture contains a powdered variety of potato imported from another land; one with a very particular side effect. The potato flour was just one of several ingredients Jinshi had and Gaoshun had to take on daily basis."
So it's safe to say the potato starch Maomao fetched on the other day is one of the ingredients to make Jinshi's drug.
Hope this will narrow down your search!
its a testosterone blocker so that jinshi won't have a hard on...he isn't a eunuch he has his dick along with his balls intact
@@forotherpurpose3671Oh so that's where the potato flour comes in play! I see...
From what I remember, Gaoshun got married at 15 and had his first kid at 16. This is why he doesn't look at super old despite having a grandkid.
That just normal in old time.
@@JediLordWong fyi there are no new eunuchs made. I don't remember if its by the Empress dowedger or the current emporer but one of them forbit it.

Like father, like daughter, even if she dislikes him they really look alike, both of them are crazy and are really smart
Don't forget she has her familial father's expertise in the field of medicine on top of her biological father's gift for political intrigue. (I think it'd be even more extreme if she'd been raised by both men instead of sheltered from the palace for so long.)
@@djchappell1726her mother actually is very smart too btw.
Truely maomao is a juggernaut of nature AND nurture. She’s built to thrive
Maomao villain arc unlocked... that laugh lol
Her biological father's madness and familial fathers medical education make for one scary.... person? It's hard to call Maomao that when she's hysterically laughing like that.
Also don't forget how cold and calculating her actual mother is...
Give her a hat, a broom and cauldron to make potions in and we can call her the Wicked Witch of the East with that Laugh. 😁
The attempt probably wasn't against "Jinshi". It was probably against the "Imperial Brother". I don't think the court recognizes them as being the same person.
Oh, that is a good point!
23:29 It was hinted in previous episode that Meimei might have someone who might buy her out.
maomao is 17 isnt she?
@@faysmitten she's 18 in the recent episodes
@@faysmitten not sure if you've already figured it out but I'll reply anyway
It's been over a year at least since Maomao got kidnapped and sold to the palace
She started the series at 17, so timeline wise she'd be 18 minimum
By that account "Jinshi" started the series at 18 and is now 19
7:42 ep16 at 13:00 suggested that the metalworker died of lead poisoning from his solder.
He also had the fancy hairpin, which Gaoshun pointed out that he forgot to remove.
And more if he's all the time near Maomao when he likes her this much, he must have a lot of desire for her. A bottled up desire
@@roribeedm Ahh, that makes a lot of sense.

Anger: at himself maybe(?) for having exposed his daughter to such a dangerous situation; anger at the guard for delaying Maomao's entry into the temple (and thus avoiding her leg injury or death); anger/jealousy at Jinshi for being so close to his daughter😅
I also read this in another comment section: apparently the walk scene and Lakan-face reaction scene are anime originals. The author of the novels apparently posted a comment somewhere that Lakan punished the guardwho hit Maomao, but eventually since the guard was diligent with his job, he rose back in his ranks.
yeah anime has a few original scenes. The kidnapping at the start is also anime original. LN starts with maomao already in the inner palace.
Suirei really said, peace out y'all, I'm so done with this place, ciao!
Lakan be like : Ah there's murder plan I'm too lazy to investigate here's let's gift it to my dearest daughter
Spoiler:
The previous Empress Dowager was referred to using a different term in the WN, LN, and Manga.
@@roribeedm I’ve seen that too. Is it a different term being used in Japanese, or just the same term translated differently?

Basen should be thanking Maomao for saving the Lord he serves, but for some reason he yelled at Maomao because the Lord was targeted.
He needs to broaden his perspective and grow in spirit a little more.

As for the drug that Suirei allegedly used, I am just guessing since no specific name of the drug was given, but it is probably a drug that causes a state of suspended animation with ingredients similar to anesthesia.
15:32 Tanya Degurechaff(The Saga of Tanya the Evil)
This laugh was said to be Tanya's because the voice actor is the same Aoi Yūki.
Indeed, this evil laugh is very similar.

Jinshi is publicly a 24-year-old eunuch, but it was revealed that he is actually a 19-year-old man who works in the rear palace on medication that temporarily suppresses male function.
OMG I've been waiting all day for this! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us! BTW, you killed me with that Yu-Gi-Oh clip xD
16:30 Mao mao in evil Lakan mode 😂
That cackling Maomao... maybe she's more her father's daughter than we know lol
21:41 Gyokyo: I'm pregnant
Maomao: Ah, as expected of my Ace Student
That's another reason why the doctor being in love with Suirei was important to the plot like Maomao said
Don’t forget, a few episodes ago. Jinshi murmured under his breath, that Lakan does know who he really is. As Lakan was leaving his office. 🇺🇦🇭🇹🇵🇸
The resurrection drug (sounds like Romeo and Juliet) that is a blend of drugs. Although I am not sure her heart fully stopped or rather would be very weak. Just enough to keep body and brain alive.
Waiting for this! Also take note and remember that after Suirei scene it was then cut to Lady Loulan 😏
Always enjoy your reactions!
If I remember correctly lakan had a good idea as to who jinshi is which was hinted at during previous conversations.
That moment where Maomao did the evil laugh was Tanya trying to crawl out of her body
Resurrection medicine sounds like the same drug that the Haitians used to make zombies in The Serpent and the Rainbow.
I think this where they drew their inspiration from. Zombie powder even has pufflefish in it
If you had the choice of being beheaded or a risky resurrection drug, I think the drug was a better bet and it looks like she won the bet.
(Spoiler)
Somewhere far into the future (season 5?), we are going to meet Chue. We need more seasons! The VA for this one, I cannot wait. Think classic Chinese like VA, that’s somewhat what I hear every time I read Chue’s lines. Comic relief is part of her what she’s like, but much more on the serious side.
The silly sparrow girl is my third favorite. Bug girl first and the kitty second.
And we don't even get to see the bug girl in action in this season.
didn't they also say in the LN that the reason it isn't being fatal is because the two separate poisons in the "resurrection drug" neutralise one another after a while?
There are a few extra scenes in the anime so far that weren't originally. In the light novel that are small spoilers. With only four episodes left in the season. They probably aren't going to answer all the questions. As this season is the first two Light novels.
0:40 Idk if it helps at all but in the manga, Jinshi actually ran to get MaoMao to the infirmary. They had him do the slow walk in the last episode strictly for dramatic effect
18:11 Also, the “manhood-suppressing” medicine that Jinshi is taking is the potato flour medicine that MaoMao had picked up for him the other day. For some reason the anime left out that line from the manga/light novel
Nothing bad wake up in the Jinshi bed. What do you think girls? 😅
The (fan translation) manga mentioned it as 'devil trumpet' aka korean morning glory
@@fanskucing597 it's the same plant only in vernacular different
Next episode is gonna be hilarious and I'm confident you'll like it.
If the last few episodes are gonna be what i think it is,
It'll be a very emotional
Maomao's lessons worked well.. 😂😂😂
Lakan definitely did know who Jinshi is. He’s concerned about MaoMao
I honestly was thinking it was just like a silhouette character but not actually the character that perpetrated this entire conspiracy.
It’s probably not so much stopping the heart from beating as it is slowing it down to undetectable levels for ancient Chinese medical technology
18:26
Could be juniper berries mixed with something else. 🤷
Might be co-conspirators instead.
Tnx for uploading
YAY! More apothecary anime! Could potato starch be used as a libido suppressant? Like, if you combine it with other stuff in a drink?
Now we get the explanation on why Basen looks like Gaoshun.
If Maomao is Sherlock, then she just meant her Moriarty.
Jinshi is only 19 as he's the same age as Bosun. Only 2 years older than Maomao! Thought he was alot older...
because he's pretending to be 5 years older
This is just my theory
at least 1 of the members of conspiracy has to know who Jinshi is and that list of people has to be quite limited.
I bet they went after jinshi because they think he's the emperor's brother and if the emperor has no heir then jinshi is the next in line.
She literally turned Tanya for like 10 seconds.
He's 19 but have to pretend to be older for..... stuff.... spoiler material stuff so don't count on me to tell you
Can't wait for the next episode it's going to be so funny 😭
I'm not a manga reader but there's a chance what Maomao say Gyokuyou getting pregnant are true...remember the episode where Maomoa, Jinshi & Gyokuyou talk about Aphrodisiac....I think Gyokuyou took some of it for herself and the emperor...her expression that day are interesting...Never thought It got this fast for her to be pregnant.
This is mostly the result of maomao sex education hehehe
@@juliejaropillo7079 true
Gyokuyou has always been one of the Emperor's favourite concubines, alongside Lihua. He spends zero time with the underage Lishu (since he isn't a creep), and spends the bare minimum with any of his other concubines, so it honestly isn't too surprising. Not to mention that Lihua's lead poisoning might mean it will be hard for her to have another baby
Heart doesn't stop but drops to 8 to 10 BPM body temperature would fall.
Also no, "Jinshi" is 24. The real person behind the "Jinshi mask" is *19* So he's only a year/year and a half older than Maomao.
Sounds really hard to do during this time period. Your dose better be perfect to get all of those effects
Break out the voice changing bowtie and tracker glasses cuz Detective MaoMao is on the case!
No spoiler, but this is what I can come up with
1) Maybe another branch of the imperial family, like the grandfather of current emperor has another brother and in European terms, would be called a cadet branch.
Darth Maomao has appeared.
Hang on .... so the current emporer's younger brother was born 10 years after him at the same time as his own first child by Consort Aduo ... which means he was 9 or 10 when that baby was conceived?! 😳
yeah that math doesn't add up...
Best laugh in anime.
Jinshi is 19 and Maomao is 17 somewhat close to 18
Loulan is daughter of important person.
If this is an AU she is just cosplayer LOL
Suirei mystery will take at least another 24 episodes season. Maybe even more. I hope we get season 2.
Because I already knew LN, every time I see Loulan I feel really sad 🥲
Girl is an awesome cosplayer.
Frieren is back! And pregnant! lol. (same actress)
Medicine from faraway land that can make people seeems dead? Is it like.. The one from Romeo and Juliet?
Waiting for 🐸 day 😅
Gyokuyou ftw
Ooooh early!
That manhood suppressant was a failure since Jinshi is still gaining muscle
Maomao’s theory was confirmed. But why switch why fake brother fake eunuch ….
The source readers are starting to get really obnoxious. Every comment section has someone outright spoiling, every clip has someone complaining about how the anime didn't faithfully reproduce manga panels.
