the part with Maomao assessing Lihaku is an even bigger misunderstanding situation in the manga as Maomao was on her knees and reaching to pull the loincloth off herself when Jinshi barges in. I for one am glad they subtly changed it so it's friendlier to a wider audience.
@@cherry1311They would rush events a lot if they did. Given there are 3 episodes left for the season, they'd probably end with the resolution of Maomao's parents situation.
Jinchi was testing Lihaku, not because of Maomao in a way but he was seeing if Lihaku could have been "bought/bribed" and having a weakness through financial means.
In case if you are wondering, I did a purchase power conversion of the amount of money mentioned in this episode, and here goes. Lihaku's salary is roughly equivalent to 60k USD a year, and asking price for Pairin is about 600K, and Jinshi just casually offered him like 1.2 million dollars. Pairin's asking price of about 10k, is comparative to about 3000 teal of silver during the 1600s, where we had solid enough record of what the asking price for buyout of top courtesans were. That means the money mentioned in this show divided roughly by 4 is the equivalent price in the 1600s. The last two dynasties in China were notorious for not paying bureaucrats well enough, so there were a lot of embezzlements, but it doesn't seem like it's the case in this show. So Lihaku's salary is converted to about 250 teals of silver, which would've been twice as much as what historical government officials made at that time, at roughly 100, but once again, they were not paid well, whereas in this show it doesn't seem like that's a low pay. 1 teal of silver in terms of purchasing power at that time is roughly 700 dollars in Chinese RMB, as Chinese historic researchers did a lot of these kinds of calculations, and did come up with this. In terms of exchange rate, Chinese dollars are about 1/7 that of USD, but since things are cheaper in China (A bottle of coke at a vending machine is less than a dollar), I'd say you kind of have to half the exchange rate to reflect the purchase power, so it comes to around 1/3, and that means 1 teal of silver in the 1600s is roughly equivalent to $230 USD today. That means Lihaku is making roughly 60k a year, and Pairin 's buyout is at 600K. Keep in mind, we actually ARE richer nowadays than before, it's just that we have way too many things to spend on, that it doesn't feel like that anymore.

next week and the week after are the episodes I've been waiting for all season. Edit: Courtesans cannot simply quit. In exchange for a guarantee for food, shelter, steady money, (sometimes debts), and an easier life, the courtesans promise themselves as property to the brothel. Pairin is getting close to retirement age, which will mean her value will start to decrease as few men will be willing to be with someone her age. And maybe the reason it's the reason why Maomao believe it won't take as much as 10,000 silver to buy her, as the old lady won't fight as much over the price, so long as Pairin wants to go.
In the manga and LN it's being explained better, they just omitted that part here in Maomao's thoughts. A contract of a courtesan is basically "you owe us a sum of money for sheltering you, your body as a collateral". Pairin was in the profession for so long she paid her debts long, long ago, and now it's purely up to the old hag about the "dowry" she wants for the Pairin, since she is literally the face of the Verdigris House right now, and it's like selling a profitable brand. They also omitted the part about the thoughts that Pairin could inherit the Verdigris House from the old hag and become its matron after her retirement/death - yes, that's also on the table. The rest of this story will be much, much later in the LN, I doubt we'll see an anime adaptaion of this...

Pairin is definitely a candidate to inherit the Verdegris House, but I don’t think the Madame is really considering her. Pairin doesn’t seem particularly business savvy and is far too lustful to want a behind-the-scenes role like the Madame has taken. She’d probably try to force herself on any customer who strikes her fancy if she’s the one that chooses who gets to see the flowers, which would not be good for business. It would have been interesting to hear from a pharmacist pov how a woman is able to lactate without Being pregnant or experiencing having a baby and how it’s possible. Like how pairin was able lactate to feed Maomao has a baby when maomaos mother abandoned her as a baby.
It's not really that rare, especially for someone like Pairin who makes ample use of her breasts every day. Repeated and often nipple stimulation leads to the production of prolactin which can cause milk production, which can occur even in males. There are endocrine disorders and pituitary tumors which can cause it, but it's probably nipple stimulation in Pairin's case. It's a little surprising though because high prolactin levels can lead to decreased libido and we've seen she's a thirsty girl. It could be useful in her line of work because it would make it harder for her to conceive as menstruation is negatively affected by prolactin secretion, although it is by no means 100% effective. It makes sense biologically though as a mother would likely not want to conceive while she is still expending resources producing milk for an existing offspring.
witnessing this the second time around from reading the light novel. Not giving away any spoilers, i realise that Jinshi was probably checking Lihaku on if he was going through Maomao to get to him/use him only to realize Lihaku really is not that type of person, proving him trustworthy.
The language of flowers of the blue rose was "impossible" and "non-existent" because it was a color that could not be realized, but this was changed to "dream come true," "miracle," and "God's blessing" after the successful development of the blue rose through biotechnology was announced in 2004.
when watching the episode by myself before coming here, I wondered if you'd maybe talk about how Pairin was able to breastfeed Maomao despite not having a child herself. I thought that lactation without *at least* being pregnant wasn't possible, although looking it up it does happen in very rare cases? I think it would've been an interesting topic to have discussed, even if just briefly.
Remember that Lihaku is going to Verdigris House to have the trainees serve him tea, the only service he can afford on his military salary. He hopes that he can catch a glimpse of his girl Pairin while he's there, and it seems that Pairin is making sure that he catches those glimpses. He learned the rumor about a stranger asking about buying out a contract from one of the young serving girls, who would be on the lowest rung of the rumor mill. The rumor Lihaku heard is probably about the time Jinshi showed up with a big bag of coins to buy out Maomao's contract. Since the Princesses monopolized Maomao's time while she was at Verdigris House, the trainee serving Lihaku wouldn't know that Maomao was the object of negotiations.
8:43 In the English Dub, Maomao states, and I quote: “Pairin is a skilled dancer, both vertically and horizontally.” That sentence just has me laughing every time. 😂
I thought at first Lihaku was gonna be hired to Guard MaoMao but I was wrong. Also I remember learning in biology that Amylase in saliva breaks down starches. Since paper is just cellulose starch it makes sense cow saliva could break it down.
Well Maybe you could talk about Pairin being able to breastfeed without being praegnant herself. That is medical situation right there cause by hormonal imbalance and needs to be treated by medication. Lots of people asking about it in comments. I have been through this myself So I know, but others might not been familiar 😁
Not necessarily. Some women can produce when stimulated. Given her "assets" and her job and her high libido, it is possible she receives enough stimulation from her clients possible herself that mimic "pumping" nowadays.
Minor spoiler for later in the light novel (nothing important to the plot): It is eventually revealed that Maomao knows about certain medicinal foods that can cause a person’s chest to swell, which contains the guts of female frogs. While it is never mentioned in relation to Pairin, I would not be surprised if she used something like that early in her career to make herself more valuable as a courtesan. The way she’s drawn makes me think she isn’t exhibiting pure genetic talent, her proportions feel off to me.
The problem is the excess hormone could cause her to be unable to ovulate, which would be a problem if she wants to start a family with our boy lihaku.
Blue roses symbolize mystery, aspiration, and admiration. They can represent deep romantic feelings full of love, affection, and respect for a woman in an unusual but beautiful way.
Hi bro. Haha, love your reaction, will comment more later but I hope you are not too heartbroken about Pairin getting paired with Lihaku. Haha, i could swear your heart broke a little even as you were rooting for Lihaku. Nice episode with some light hearted ness until damn Lakan came up in the end. For me, I think you are right, Pairin and the other 2 princesses are probably financially independent to leave the profession on her own, without needing Lihaku to come up with the full sum. We can only hope. Yeah, Lihaku is the ideal Chinese scholar official, personally driven with high integrity. It looks like Lakan may have pushed his career a little in the past though. I think that’s what Jinshi suspects and was testing Lihaku if he was Lakan’s personal stooge or pawn as well. Which thankfully Lihaku passed with flying colors. Not only does Maomao trust him enough to help him have a chance to get Pairin, who is practically a mother to her as well due to being her nursing mother, but also all the earlier interactions which Maomao somehow ended up trusting Lihaku implicitly. As Jinshi said, if his cautious cat trusts someone, then maybe that person can be a trustworthy ally. Or in Jinshi case, a trustworthy pawn similar to Maomao. God damn Lakan, what are you going to do? It better not involving Maomao being clubbed again
This Pairin paradise episode, I know you'll love it 😂 5:03 Apothecary Diaries usually looks like giving information for no reason but we never know...just like how previous small cases connect to a big one before. Any small details can be small hint for future stories, who knows... 🧐
Blue roses are thus far, a horticultural impossibility (though may become possible with gene editing and other genetic engineering techniques). They can have many meanings including: the pursuit of an ideal, the fulfillment of dreams, and a sense of wonder.
“My cat is most wary, yet not only was she willing to speak to you, but she also seems to be earnestly considering you as a possible match for a woman she thinks of as an older sister.” “You’re saying that when a mistrustful cat takes to somebody, that’s the reason enough to have faith in them.” Lihaku, you just don’t know it yet, you are now a new Lackey to Jinshi. Yes, you were being tested! Now, Maomao the industrious, with help from someone we know, and then the furious Maomao. DZ: you are on to something, just not sure yet, will have to rewatch and reread LN (for the 5th time) to find out. Note: Pairin’s contract is not fully explained and has been alluded to maybe taking over the Verdigris House from The Madam, not much of this gets explained. But elsewhere someone had a better explanation than what I have.
Honestly I think Jinshi's offer wasn't just a test. I think he'd have found a way to benefit regardless of the wholesome puppy's choice to accept the money or not.
Jinshis reaction, jealous and our cat cool explains why she did it. Mao Mao "cooks up" Jinshi on her way (Mao Mao:"Jinshi has a good body and he knows that!") 🤣🤣🤣🤣
In the episode when Maomao was tending to her Mother, and remained there hidden from Lakan, it is mentioned that Lakan came to make THAT offer again. Which is implied later that he was offering to buy Maomao and/or her mother (as he had done multiple times before) . So I'm assuming that is the proposal that the servant heard and got confused about.
So doctors obviously have to keep their rooms clean but have people to clean them. Do pharmacists have to take special care to keep their stocks of drugs clean? I imagine there is also a shelf life to some?
It is possible for women to have lactation without getting pregnant... Like because of hormone, and some can happen when they hear baby's cry.. . Some said men can lactate too? 🤔🤔
NOTICE: Since a lot of people are asking for it I’m going to make a short video later explaining breastfeeding and lactation in regards to Pairin.

Joka is a deep, deep misandrist though, canonically. If you want to know why, LN is waiting for you)
Blue roses are thus far, a horticultural impossibility (though may become possible with gene editing and other genetic engineering techniques). They can have many meanings including: the pursuit of an ideal, the fulfillment of dreams, and a sense of wonder.
“My cat is most wary, yet not only was she willing to speak to you, but she also seems to be earnestly considering you as a possible match for a woman she thinks of as an older sister.”
“You’re saying that when a mistrustful cat takes to somebody, that’s the reason enough to have faith in them.”
Lihaku, you just don’t know it yet, you are now a new Lackey to Jinshi.
Mao Mao "cooks up" Jinshi on her way (Mao Mao:"Jinshi has a good body and he knows that!") 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh my god, this is happening, everybody stay calm! I've prepared paper handkerchiefs already.
I ship it. Looking forward to the special video about lactation.
This show is the best! And this episode made me laugh so much
BET Lakan wants to buy Maomao's mother like he wanted too long ago!
Oh that’s possible I suppose
In the episode when Maomao was tending to her Mother, and remained there hidden from Lakan, it is mentioned that Lakan came to make THAT offer again. Which is implied later that he was offering to buy Maomao and/or her mother (as he had done multiple times before) . So I'm assuming that is the proposal that the servant heard and got confused about.
If a woman who has never given birth lactates... isn't that a serious health problem? And that mil is actually not good for the baby?
It’s not a serious health problem and definitely possible. The milk is perfectly normal and safe to drink
Baby maomao is so cute ❤
So doctors obviously have to keep their rooms clean but have people to clean them. Do pharmacists have to take special care to keep their stocks of drugs clean? I imagine there is also a shelf life to some?
i wonder what is the tittle of the humming song of lihaku and pairin..
my conspiercy is that lakan was looking to buy mao mao
I have a fear that's what he wants
She’s already bought out by Jinshi though correct?
@@DefinitivelyZach yes I think I have trouble keeping up with subtitles because of my vision but I do injoy reaction videos
No wonder why Pairin is so expensive to buy out, she is literally a mommy milker.
😂
You kind of paused at an awkward moment. Maomao wrote to Pairin and it panned to show that Lihaku delivered his message as she was reading Maomaos
I guess you could have discussed galactorrhea, but it is a bit ancillary to the episode
Headcannon she has a brain tumor. It can also be affecting how extreme her libido is as depicted in the episode.
Minute 1:58 the best way to spoiler yourself😢
Thanks
Isn’t Lihaku one of Lakan’s men? If so, I would also try to keep him close.
Maybe talk about why/ women can produce breastmilk but without getting pregnant... I mean that's mind-blowing
Pairin, marry this man!
No marry me!
@@DefinitivelyZach 😮
❤❤❤
She breastfed Maomao so that means she also got pregnant and gave birth?? Bc there's no way she lactated out of nowhere
Pretty sure it is a condition called Galactorrhea, Pairin hormones may have been crazy that is why she also like sex a lot.
Induce lactation without pregnancy is possible, with medication or without medication by pumping. It might not work for every woman but it is possible
They can. It's called galactorrhea I think?
It is possible for women to have lactation without getting pregnant... Like because of hormone, and some can happen when they hear baby's cry..
.
Some said men can lactate too? 🤔🤔
@@Ken_Mochi Men don't have a hormone called estrogen. That's why they don't produce milk
