He can see what each person's role is on a chess board, and he just needs to put them at the right place. This is also the reason he notices Jinshi's actual identity not being so simple, because the chess piece he sees on him is "Advisor" in Chinese Chess it's the second strongest piece other than the King, meaning Jinshi is pretty much second in place after the emperor.
It's also why he didn't do anything himself with the information of the conspiracy. Putting jinshi and maomao in the right position is the only thing he knows.

They also play a defensive role working very closely with the 仕. Whether or not their movements in the game reflects both Jinshi and Gaoshun relative freedom and role when it comes to the emperor is up to the reader's interpretation. It's usually placed right next to the 帥 piece, which is the most important piece since you lose the game if you lose this piece.
What's wild is that his condition is a real thing, but for his position it's almost legitimately helpful because he is not biassed at how people look or who their family is, he simply sees where they would best fit.
@8:00 Yes, it's a dirty book. It was omitted from the anime, Maomao is peddling adult books to both the high courtesans and the emperor. Well, 2 of the high courtesans. 18:20 In the novel, Maomao says something different. "Jinshi, did you know that even if you're missing the tip of your finger, a fingernail will still grow?"
The "Did you know that if the tip of your finger is cut off it can grow back" line isn't until chapter 40 in the manga. That scene isn't likely to make it into the first season of the anime, unfortunately, because they have way too much to cram into the next two episodes. This unfortunately does mean that we aren't likely to see a scene from the first opening theme until next season.
No, it wasn't really omitted, because the subplot with those books is in the manga from ch.41 (LN vol.3) onward, and it will be the literal beginning of the (hopefully) second season. They just teased it here, in the manga it was also just a small 4koma in the extras for the manga volume. And the line about the fingernail will come two episodes later during the certain context. Don't rush things.
Blue orchids do exist naturally in a little species from Australia . Recently there has been some GMO blue orchids put on the market. Then there are the horticulture "blue" ones that are sort of kind of not that really blues. The one blue orchid most people think of is those that have cheap white phals that have been dyed blue. BTW I give Mao mão kudos for no mercury in the rose range! Roses are REALLY sensitive to mercury this causes flower buds to abort! One broken thermometer can ruin a rose growers entire crop!
4:17 Ling li Gyokuyō's daughter, or princess, is actually named Ling Li(nickname: Xiaoling), but a check of the cast shows that her name is not listed, so she is probably played by a voice actor playing another character in a dual role. Also, the nose is movable, so it can be attached to either the right or left side. Therefore, the position of the monocle has changed, but this is not a drawing error. Lakan is an eccentric person, so he will perform such meaningless actions according to his mood at the time. 16:29 Blue Rose In a short animation on the TOHO Animation Channel, Jinshi, who has had a taste of this success, asks Maomao to make cherry blossoms in the middle of winter, pure white sunflowers, roses and lilies bloom from a single stem. Maomao responded, "It would be faster to make a hallucinogenic drug that is harmless to the body".
Lakan has prospagnosia (face blindness), he can distinguish parts of face like eyes or nose, but it doesn't makes sense to him as a whole, so to tell people apart he doesn't rely on faces but attributes people with go and shogi pieces. More about it will be explained in the next episode, so I really look forward to your reaction!

I don't know if it would count as the same diagnosis, but a similar thing happens if you are born needing glasses and only end up getting them later in life. I, for example, can only keep a handful of faces I work with in the daily in my memory. If I go two days without seeing someone I cannot describe their face and will start to have difficulty identifying them even in a familiar environment the longer that lack of interaction continues.

I used to work at a Florist Shop and they selled blue Orchideen. They basicly put blue Food Colors in the Water and a white Flower turns blue. There are black Roses but they are real, i think....
For Lakan and seeing people as go pieces, its the shows way of showing that he has Prosopagnosia or face blindness. I believe it goes into more information in the next episode from what I know of... I got spoiled.
True blue roses don't actually exist. There have been multiple attempts to genetically modify roses to produce a blue tint, but the closest anyone has come is a light purple. The book was definitely a dirty book. The manga shows more clearly that Maomao is providing dirty books to the Emperor and the Consorts. The reason having the Emperor's favorite book is a big deal to Lihua is that it will give her an insight into his desires, thereby letting her appeal to him more in the hopes of bearing him his first son. The reason they are trying to hide Gyokuyou's pregnancy is because when she was pregnant the last time there were multiple attempts to poison her. The first male heir to be born to a consort who grows to be a certain age (I believe it was either 3 or 5 years old) becomes the crown prince, and his mother becomes the Empress. No consort wants any of the others to take this position and their families will go to any lengths to ensure their family line gets the prestige of having the next Empress be of their line. This is also why Maomao was brought back to work as a poison tester when it was just a theory that Gyokuyou might be pregnant. This was unfortunately another explanation that got skipped in the anime because they are trying to cram so much into the last few episodes of the season. The nail polish was more to distract the court ladies from what Maomao was doing at the greenhouse than it was to distract Lakan. That was more just a lucky coincidence. Since Maomao has pretty much avoided Lakan since she was a child, I don't think she knows enough about him to realize that red nail polish would set him off like that. And once again, Maomao looks at her pinky. It will all be revealed soon as to why and how it ties in to Maomao's dream about her mother. There will be some major flashbacks over the next couple of episodes that are quite strong emotionally, so have a box of tissues handy, just in case.
The anime did clearly hint that Maomao was brought back to Gyokuyou because they suspect she was pregnant and that Maomao will resume her role as a poison taster.
@@zam023 The anime did not mention that there were multiple attempts to poison Gyokuyou during her previous pregnancy, nor has it really explained how one of the consorts becomes Empress.
@@roribeedm It was all clearly explained in the very first two episodes of the anime, when Maomao was made a poison tester for the Gyoukyou for the first time, including the fact that Gyoukyou is from an infuential merchant family so it's all about politics, as well as the fact that she's already lost TWO poison testers to be poisoned before that... people really have short memory... And the detailed explanations about the power struggle in the inner palace over "who will be the Empress" won't really come to light till much later in the story (LN vol.4-5), so please be wary of spoiling the plot in this way.
@@Silverhorse777 In Chapter 34 of the manga, right after Jinshi tells Maomao that she's going back to being a poison tester for Gyokuyou, Maomao has a brief inner monologue where it is again mentioned that there were two poisoning attempts. Instead the anime focused on the Lakan thoughts and then jumped to the Suiren conversation. This was supposed to be at the end of episode 20 and the poisoning attempts mention was skipped in this scene and hasn't been brought up since. As for the later stuff regarding who will become the Empress, I haven't even read that far. What I was speaking of relating to the families is predominantly from real world history of Chinese dynasties as well as hints from what has been said about Loulan's family (Father specifically) in the chapters of the manga that have already been covered in the anime. There was a brief mention earlier in the manga that the first consort to bear a male heir becomes the Empress that, to the best of my recollection, didn't make it into the anime. If it is actually explained in detail later on, then they may be saving it for season 2, but I wouldn't know when or if that happens. My wording may have been a little confusing unfortunately as I am on the spectrum, so sometimes I don't make myself clear. I should have separated the section regarding the first born son and the family stuff into a separate paragraph. Though the historic context does play into why there might be attempts on Gyokuyou's life while she is pregnant and why Maomao would be returning to her previous job. I will try to make sure in the future that I specify when I am referring to historical context rather than things specifically covered in the anime or chapters in the manga that have been or are being covered in the episode.
This would also likely mean that disguises won't fool Lakan, like Suirei dressing as a man, he would still know she's a woman. Likewise if Loulan is disguising herself it wouldn't fool him either. It also means that when Maomao was injured he saw her actual face and not a chess representation, so he was aware of the real damage done to it.
The nail polish seems to be an unintentional attack lol, i dont think she would have know that red would irritate Lakan like that since he does go to Verdigris often where women would also wear nail polish.
Yes! It's next episode you will see his past!!! A lot of your questions will be answered, I can't wait to see your reaction. That's what I ment in the last video about soon, since you saw the little bit at the end I home you don't mind what I said😅
Random fun historical fact: painting nails actually was a fashion statement in ancient China, especially in the Ming Dynasty. They used colored lacquer to paint EVERYTHING. Bowls, chopsticks, hair combs, tables, chairs and... yes. Even nails. :)
When I was a child we had those funny "do it yourself" craft books. One of them showed how to make a flower bloom with two colors at once by splitting the stem and putting it in two glasses with differently dyed water.
I have not seen anyone comment about the line Jinshi says after presenting the rose buds to the Emperor, which is right after Loulan is presented, "...enjoy the beauty of the buds while imagining how they will look in full bloom." I immediately took that as him referring to Loulan being a bud of a woman, yet to fully bloom and for the Emperor to not discard her because she has not fully bloomed into her beauty as a woman.
I doubt that. Jinshi clearly stated that the emperor could not even look her dad in the eye, meaning he does not want anything to do with that family. Basically, Loulan is a political move by her dad, which could be trouble for him.
As a person who can’t remember/recognize a person’s face, I cope with other signs like someone’s scent or their voice. It’s shitty because I do see a face but I can’t really retain/remember any facial features. I’s sure that if there is a crime and someone asks me what the criminal looks like, I’d be confused. Like there is no image in my mind. Just black.
I'm happy we had Xiaolang and Lihua back for a while. And it's good to see Lihua as a chibi too 🙂And Xiaolang being the hero against the monster caterpillar 😆 About the Hongniang situation, I don't know if the ladies in waiting are allowed to get married, but if I was to date or marry Hongniang I would totally let her continue to serve Gyokuyo anyway. [edit] Also, the Scoobidoo sound fx was hilarious, and unexpected in an anime
Historically, all the women who worked in the rear palace belonged to the Emperor so without his direct consent there was no way for them to get married, and if one of them somehow did get pregnant they would be punished severely for it. The 4 consorts are not the only concubines in the rear palace, there were many lesser concubines, noble ladies, and other ranks and the Emperor could choose to visit any of them for nightly duties. The consort's handmaids were included in these ranks. In episode 2, a woman tries to lure Jinshi into her room for "Tea" and Gaoshun says to Jinshi later on that apparently the servants haven't been made aware that he is there in part to test their loyalty and that her actions could not be tolerated.
I'm calling that Maomao INTENTIONALLY timed and nurtured the roses to only be budding at the time of the garden party, except the one she has in the box which is in full bloom (which we know from the opening). She WANTED Lakan to be disappointed so she can catch him completely off guard.
This is now the third media I´ve seen this and I´m as excited as the first time! I love what´s gonna happen next episode and I know you´re gonna enjoy it as well.

It looks like the anime will adapt story up to light novel vol. 2. Currently there are 14 volumes of light novels Apothecary Diaries in Japan (for English up to vol. 10, vol. 11 will be released on May 2024). There are lots of interesting stories to cover for anime. Hope for more seasons... this will end soon, Frieren will end soon, noooooo 🥲
The anime seems to be adapting one of the versions of the manga rather than the LN. The first season has covered about half of the manga thus far, and I expect it will end with either chapter 37 or they may try to cram 38 into the last two episodes as well. They most likely plan on leaving the series on a major cliffhanger right in the middle of all the major events and reveals though to really push for a second season. And of course as popular as the series has become a second season is almost guaranteed.
@@DefinitivelyZach Can I recommend Handyman Saitou in Another World then? No, they are _hiding_ her pregnancy here. There are no mistakes here, but any explanations would be very spoilery for the possible second season. You can read the LN or manga if you want to know.
I think in 16:28 Jinshi feels guilty for making Maomao barely sleeping for days, so he doesn't want her apologizing to him when it should've been him who's apologizing to her
Lakan is one of those interesting, red herring characters! ^^ Despite not wanting to be his ally, a lot of people know that Lakan is *NOT* the kind of person you wouldn't want as an enemy, either (because he can be crafty in his own way - aka making people like Jinshi and/or Maomao solve things for him... when Lakan, himself, ALREADY figured out said issues)!
Minor spoiler for the future Apparently the way his mind works is he jumped into conclusion without knowing how. For example X is the culprit. People would ask how? But he find it difficult to explain it to people and can't just say 'it's based on instinct/hunches' he just knows it. So he used people like Maomao to figure out step by step to reach that conclusion to explain and show proof to others.
Blue roses cannot naturally occur due to missing genetic components. Recent genetic engineering has been able to add necessary genetic elements. Still rare and expensive.
2:33 I kind of felt like maybe Lakan was isolating Maomao from people she could count on by sowing chaos. 🤔 Someone in the rear palace that could help her now has his attention elsewhere. That could just be an unforeseen outcome of his visit though. 😅
13:10 the thing with concubines and pregnancies is pretty cutthroat after all, if the concubines have a son, he might become the next emperor several factions would do whatever they can to have the son be someone they can influence if the pregnancy became common knowledge, more blatant assassination attempts aren't out of the realm of possibility
blue roses don't exist. The genotype blue is incredibly rare in the flora realm. There's no plant bearing that genotype close enough to roses to crossbreed them. For Lakan, it's not about how he thinks but how he perceives the world. It's a medical condition that prevent him to register the faces he sees.
The Freak, the one who shall not be named, is well explained in this episode. Now we will see Maomao the vicious! This question and the answer play into an old Asian language stereotype. Sometimes you may hear a Japanese or Chinese person with a very thick accent say Fried Rice as almost Flied Lice, or Arigato as almost Aligato. This is because the Japanese and Mandarin R sound is different from the English R sound, and sometimes comes across as almost blended with an L because of how it is rolled. Because of this, depending on which source you are looking at Lakan may be translated as Rakan, Lihaku may be translated as Rihaku, Luomen may be translated as Ruomen, and Lingli may be translated as Rinri. Just one of the many quirks of translating, and why translating Japanese and Mandarin has been so hard for translation sites to do for decades.

What's wild is that his condition is a real thing, but for his position it's almost legitimately helpful because he is not biassed at how people look or who their family is, he simply sees where they would best fit.
I think that Lakon genuinely can't see faces, but viewing them as game pieces allows him to distinguish people in his head as best he can.
Blue roses don't exist, same with orchids. In order to make them, you dye white roses, maomao explains how.

@silongbalay820 they're rare and hard to keep alive, the ones in stores are dyed.
@@amystreasuresdesign we have plenty of that in our backyard

Blue orchids do exist naturally in a little species from Australia . Recently there has been some GMO blue orchids put on the market. 4:17 Ling li
Gyokuyō's daughter, or princess, is actually named Ling Li(nickname: Xiaoling), but a check of the cast shows that her name is not listed, so she is probably played by a voice actor playing another character in a dual role.
The most likely candidate is Atsumi Tanezaki, who plays Gyokuyō.

As the original author properly stated, Lakan's monocle is non-prescription glasses, and there is no particular significance in wearing them on either side.
Also, the nose is movable, so it can be attached to either the right or left side.
Therefore, the position of the monocle has changed, but this is not a drawing error.
Lakan is an eccentric person, so he will perform such meaningless actions according to his mood at the time.
16:29 Blue Rose
In a short animation on the TOHO Animation Channel, Jinshi, who has had a taste of this success, asks Maomao to make cherry blossoms in the middle of winter, pure white sunflowers, roses and lilies bloom from a single stem.
Maomao responded, "It would be faster to make a hallucinogenic drug that is harmless to the body".
Lakan is most definitely eccentric!

It's not just temperature, but also factors like amount of light per day. That's why in some agriculture, a bright light is flashed at the plants in the middle of the night: to make them act as if it's closer to summer.

@@djchappell1726 I know that feeling. I know who people are, but I often forget their faces and can't distinguish them. I grew up super socially anxieich, (actually, my social anxiety is still huge at 37) and not looking at people for so long has really hurt my ability to always recognize people.

There are black Roses but they are real, i think....
Black roses are just VERY dark red ones
Bowls, chopsticks, hair combs, tables, chairs and... yes. Even nails. :)
When I was a child, my mom planted a pink rose bush for me and a blue rose bush for my brother. Though the blue rose bush had light blue flowers.
And it's good to see Lihua as a chibi too 🙂And Xiaolang being the hero against the monster caterpillar 😆
About the Hongniang situation, I don't know if the ladies in waiting are allowed to get married, but if I was to date or marry Hongniang I would totally let her continue to serve Gyokuyo anyway.
Good to see Maomao's friend from the rear palace again. Next episode is gonna be good for sure! Definitely looking forward to your next reaction

We will have to find something to replace them 😢
The anime seems to be adapting one of the versions of the manga rather than the LN.
Frog, basically.
@@DefinitivelyZach Can I recommend Handyman Saitou in Another World then? Lady Gyokoyou getting pregnant seems like MaoMao's lessons DEFINITELY paid off
I think in 16:28 Jinshi feels guilty for making Maomao barely sleeping for days, so he doesn't want her apologizing to him when it should've been him who's apologizing to her
I am going to die waiting for the next episode, the ending was intense as hell! Maomao is a bad ass!
Lakan is one of those interesting, red herring characters! ^^
Despite not wanting to be his ally, a lot of people know that Lakan is *NOT* the kind of person you wouldn't want as an enemy, either (because he can be crafty in his own way - aka making people like Jinshi and/or Maomao solve things for him... when Lakan, himself, ALREADY figured out said issues)!
Minor spoiler for the future
Apparently the way his mind works is he jumped into conclusion without knowing how.
For example X is the culprit.
People would ask how?
But he find it difficult to explain it to people and can't just say 'it's based on instinct/hunches' he just knows it.
So he used people like Maomao to figure out step by step to reach that conclusion to explain and show proof to others.
The next episode is the one I've been waiting for, ever since I read it in the manga. It's going to be so good, I can't wait.
Blue roses cannot naturally occur due to missing genetic components. Recent genetic engineering has been able to add necessary genetic elements. Still rare and expensive.

13:10 the thing with concubines and pregnancies is pretty cutthroat
after all, if the concubines have a son, he might become the next emperor
several factions would do whatever they can to have the son be someone they can influence
if the pregnancy became common knowledge, more blatant assassination attempts aren't out of the realm of possibility
blue roses don't exist. The genotype blue is incredibly rare in the flora realm. There's no plant bearing that genotype close enough to roses to crossbreed them.
For Lakan, it's not about how he thinks but how he perceives the world. It's a medical condition that prevent him to register the faces he sees.

What's right Lakan or with the German translation Rakan!? 🤔
From the novel she calls him "Old fart" and she ignores him so good as she can. For our "cat" her foster father (and grand uncle) is her dad and to raise her up he did everything for her. Her dad is her ⚓ in her live. Her biological father thinks always she's a little girl and he goes after her what annoyes our cat the most and she hates him for that what he did to her mother and her self.
So far I have read the novel I think that Lakan lives in his own reality and knows not really what's going on if not his ability for stategic things is needed (I think from his psychologic status he is different from "normal" people, he is face blind and more).
Hope that was not to much spoiler, but I think not 😉
This question and the answer play into an old Asian language stereotype.
Pick your poison, it's neither.
Japanese actually doesn't have either the L or R sound, they just have one that is similar to both.
Similar to how Chinese doesn't have the V sound, and usually replace it with W.
