'Coldest air in a generation' hits the Midwest. Officials warn of almost instant frostbite

  • About 212 million people -- or 72% of the continental US population -- will see temperatures drop below freezing over the next few days.
Even for the hardiest, cold-tested Americans, the deep freeze sweeping over the Midwest will be brutal.
Officials warned of almost instant frostbite as temperatures in the region plunged below zero. Some state offices are closed and postal workers won't deliver mail in 10 states. Thousands of flights have been canceled along with dozens of train services -- most of them in and out of Chicago.

That's probably true. But Canada has experience with dealing with this cold. They have infrastructure to help remove snow and ice from critical routes, equipment built to work properly in frigid weather, the basic knowledge of how to handle it. The comparison is not reasonable.
If Chicago gets an inch of snow, we shrug it of and snowplows remove it within a few hours. People would experience minor inconvenience.
If Tampa had an inch of snow, the city would be paralyzed and many people would die.
If Tampa had a spell of a few days weather with temperatures above 100 F and high humidity, they'd take it in stride.
When it happened in Chicago, several hundred people died. I can only imagine how awful it would be for Canadians.

These number are fairly insignificant. What is significant is the global average temperature for an entire year. This is caused by the polar vortex slipping. The extreme cold of the Arctic and the heat of the tropics used to keep this jet stream wind whizzing around the Arctic and keeping the cold in place. But the Arctic is heating up astronomically and that is making the Polar Vortex go wobbly (like a spinning top slowing down). This is why the extreme cold has spilled out - it's a direct and catastrophic result of a super heated Arctic.

kinda failed to mention how kinda-not-cold it is directly on the east coastline.
there is (relatively) warm air here heading up north, creating this swirling storm of frostbite.
that is climate change for you.

Meh, it's not that bad here. I still went for my semi-daily morning hike in a large local county park. It's -3 here and "feels like" -24, but I was out for 1/2 an hour and only wore Merrell causal boots (not serious hiking boots), jeans, mid-weight fleece shirt, mid-weight fleece jacket, and light fleece hat. No gloves, scarf, long underwear, coat, etc: I haven't worn those things since I was a teen, even when I winter camp and backpack (pro tip: around any decent fire it's more like 40 to 50 degrees no matter how cold it is, and in a good sleeping bag you have nothing to worry about; you don't even need a tent).
People get too over-worried about the cold...that said, I hate the heat: if it's over 85 I'm miserable. I'll take temps like today over that heat anytime! Fresh, invigorating, fun! I'll probably go out again for a longer hike after work.
