      Damn straight! I suspect his whole arc will be reassessed over time. 'Thin Ice' is incredible, Peter has some of the best speeches and a brilliant right hook when needed.
      I also love lots about 'In The Forest of the Night', too. Sure, there's flaws, but I love Clara walking him back to the tardis, ready to die against an insurmountable problem. No enemy, just an incomplete understanding of the situation... She's prepared to stay and die, and surrender the Doctor, to continue saving the rest of the universe...

    Time Heist is one of the most rewatchable episodes in new who. I've said it plenty of times, but one thing you want from a tv show is the ability to rewatch episodes you have already watched, many of the horror episodes of Who, might be great, but they aren't really re-watchable, especially after season 5. Episodes like Time Heist, which aren't nearly as great on first time viewing, do allow you to rewatch it over and over as there is just so much that is working with the time travel story.

    What about "The Husbands of River Song"? You've got some proper snappy dialogue, the introduction of Matt Lucas as Nardole, and one of the most emotional scenes in Who history between the Doctor and River in the finale. I sometimes think they should've ended the show on that 'happily ever after' note.

    I know most people don't think much of it, but my personal favorite underrated Doctor Who episode is "Cold War". I'm kind of a sucker for plots that are set on submarines, so getting one from Doctor Who was a real treat. The Ice Warrior was an interesting choice for a revived classic foe, particularly since Skaldak showed an unusual amount of thoughtfulness and acuity for a Doctor Who foe. The show is generally seen as nominally being intended for children, but given that the doctrine of mutually assured destruction was one of the primary themes, this was definitely an episode that handled some much weightier adult subject matter. And I absolutely loved the guest appearances from Liam Cunningham and David Warner.

      @NovaWolf Gaming tbh I don't really get why Moffat gets bashed on so much. Granted yeah each to there own but he's done some great stories and he also created the weeping angels that have been awesome at times. Yeah his writing can be too convoluted even for doctor who. Like I say he's also done some awesome stories though. Hey like I say each to there own though. And imo a lot of chibnalls writings just been terrible. Season 11 imo was just bloody dire. Season 12 wasn't bad however had its fair share of bad episodes. See what season 13 brings. Unfortunately really don't expect much though.

    • @elliottwatt5297
      @elliottwatt5297 3 роки тому

      @NovaWolf Gaming Moffat himself barely misses, his worst penned episode being the meh Bells of St John. The worst episode of his era, Kill the Moon, is again a rare misfire. He had higher highs as well as keeping the average quality up, in comparison to some real stinkers from RTD and obviously Chibnall’s era which fails in every narrative way from Character to Plot to even the bloody set design.

    • @elliottwatt5297
      @elliottwatt5297 3 роки тому

      @NovaWolf Gaming 42, the Woman Who Fell to Earth, the Power of Three, the Battle of that f*cking stupid planet name, Spyfall (where he made the Doctor a racist), The Timeless Children. You get the point. Chibnall is not only bad he’s incompetent.

    • @elliottwatt5297
      @elliottwatt5297 3 роки тому

      @NovaWolf Gaming the only ones I think I’m confident in disputing here are Spyfall, where the Doctor reveals the Master to the Nazis as a brown man and says the line “now they’ll see you for what you really are.” And the Master is sent to a concentration camp. Maybe not deliberately racist but clumsy and ignorant and deeply problematic anyway.
      The Timeless Child is a 30 minute slideshow exposition, which from an actual writing standpoint is boring and lazy, and from a character standpoint it undermines the fundamental character of the Doctor being someone who CHOSE to be good, is important and good because they choose to be not because of destiny, and undermines the relationship between the Doctor and the Master being people who had the same opportunities but one CHOOSES to right wrongs, and one CHOOSES to be evil. Now it’s revealed that the Doctor is actually super important and isn’t just a regular time Lord is the progenitor of all Time Lord society.
      The Doctor is exceptional to humans but they’re supposed to be a f*ck up of a time Lord because they make the fundamental choice to interfere, to save the universe and fight evil. The Doctor isn’t special, they’re just good, and anyone can be good.
      Timeless Child is many things, poorly written, poorly acted, a hodgepodge of many ideas most of them terrible, but it’s biggest crime is it’s just so lazy. It makes the Doctor far less interesting while pretending it does the opposite. Also, don’t get me started on those ridiculous Time Lord Cybermen, an idea lazily copy and pasted from Magician’s Apprentice which doesn’t work here on any level. The Cybermen are not evil robots (which admittedly has been a problem long before Chibnall). One thing I will say is Haunting of Villa Diodati is actually really good, and the only time I believed Jodie was the Doctor. Then it’s all ruined.
      Also Jo Martin was more the Doctor in 5 minutes than Whittaker has been in nearly 5 years.

    • @elliottwatt5297
      @elliottwatt5297 3 роки тому

      @NovaWolf Gaming she does send the Master to a Nazi concentration camp, that literally happens. If I’m not meant to think about it, then it’s bad writing, and not once has 13 been called out for being just a bad person.
      What does it change? It changes the message of the character, you are not defined by your choices but your lineage, and if it truly doesn’t change anything then why say it? What’re you doing by undermining the 60 year arc of a character to make no fundamental difference? There’s more Doctors now, sure, and she worked for the space police, and she’s Time Lord Jesus, but….that’s supposed to change nothing. The Doctor is an ordinary person defined by their choices.
      The only thing I can hope is, much like the “half human” crap from the TV movie this is either ignored or retconned.
      The difference between Magician’s Apprentice and this is there’s a reason for Davros to want to steal the power of regeneration. Davros and the Daleks have always been about conquest, power, being the only living thing. Cybermen are not, and should not be conquerors. You will become like us.
      As for the Hybrid shit, the Doctor has always been inconsistent about why they left Gallifrey, Moffat provided a few possible reasons but was never definitive. Like the Joker, the Doctor’s past should be a mystery, the only thing that should matter is that they are the Doctor.
      The timeless child says you are special because you were born to be, and that’s what matters. You have made those choices because of destiny, not because of your character, and the Master is not a friend who had the same opportunity as you, but someone who, unlike you, could never achieve greatness and importance.

    I enjoyed this, and I can see why most of these are here. But I have to be one of those guys -- I'm not sure most of these are more underrated than many from the original 26 year run. Nothing from the first seven Doctors? Granted I've only watched a couple of videos from this channel, so I'm not sure from what angle you're coming from exactly, but there are stories here from every doctor from 9 to 13. Perhaps a new take on this could include five stories from the first seven Doctors' eras, as well, to make for a more even-handed approach. And after all, it is likely that stuff from the 1960s for isntance coudl be considered more underrated than material released in the past fifteen or so years, which has a little more traction among mainstream audiences.

      With all these programmes spoofing others, the remaining living complete cast of Doctor Who (going back to the 60s if any are still alive, to present) and actually doing an Edwardian Era Mystery spoof. It would be good if not a bit "Downton Abbey Goes Wrong"

    Capaldi's episode Listen is my favorite episode of Doctor Who. The absolute existential horror behind the idea of creatures that exist everywhere throughout the universe, even to the very end of time itself, that we simply don't know about because they're perfect at hiding, and we never get a clear answer on whether or not they actually exist is just. so good. But I've never seen anybody talk about it before.

  • @TomCoates
    @TomCoates 2 роки тому +1

    Completely agree with you on “Tooth and Claw”. Don’t understand why people don’t like it more. And “Boom Town” - the Slitheen are a bit rubbish, but this is a surprisingly involving little episode with a bunch of good conversations. Also “A Town Called Mercy” - well made, beautiful and morally involving. A few stumbling points, but generally under-rated.
    Not sure about “Journey to the Center of the TARDIS”, which was fun but not that great. Or Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror - I enjoyed it at the time but have felt zero desire to rewatch it since. “Into the Dalek” is a bit banal too. Still didn’t feel like Capaldi was the doctor at this point which made it hard to love. “Victory of the Daleks” was fine, but the ending was embarrassingly bad - saved by love? Come on. Time Heist was just a bit of a cliche mess. The Sontaran Two-parter was just a bit dull.
    Not keen at all on “Last Christmas” which is fairly incoherent and way too scary for a Christmas episode.

      It was technically 4 Doctors. Tom Baker #4 showed up near the end, gave the Doctor a bit more hope about his actions with The Moment, that Gallifrey did survive, but was lost. Frankly because of that ending part, I think it would be pretty cool if they managed to bring Tom back as the 14th Doctor.

    For me it’s gotta be the TV movie. Minus the Doctor being “half human,” during a period for so many reboot opportunities and remakes, the TV movie stayed true to its base material of the classic series. There were no changes to anything and I’m glad it paved a way for the modern series. Paul Mcgann is soooo underrated and I’m glad he’s the 8th Doctor canon officially being declared canon when 9 came into the show!

    I loved Last Christmas because in Death In Heaven the Doctor and Clara were beginning to part ways after Missy's supposed death thanks to the Cyberman that was originally Kate Lethbridge Stewart's father. Not to mention in addition to the team-up with Santa Claus, there was the moment within the dream that the dreamcrab latched onto Clara putting her in a dream where Danny Pink was still alive. Of course this allowed for the question if Clara truly knew Danny well, or if this was a Ghost of Christmas Past, when Danny showed to be more than just a dream by saying "I didn't die saving the Earth, I died saving Clara. The rest of you just got lucky." In addition to his parting speech before Clara "woke up" you could easily imagine that was the genuine Danny Pink being there for Clara one last time. I'd go on a similar speech about Into the Dalek, but yeah despite trying to help there be a good Dalek, it showed how much burning hatred the Doctor has for the Daleks, and gave a callback to the 9th Doctor Episode Dalek where he attempted to exterminate the "last" Dalek in the universe truly ending the Time War, and before the Dalek self-detonated, he told the Doctor "You would make a good Dalek." Which was cemented three regenerations later by Rusty. Victory of the Daleks and A Town Called Mercy both go along with it as well especially if you add in Amy's Choice. Dalek, The Runaway Bride, Human Nature and The Family of Blood, possibly Journey's End, The Waters of Mars, Victory of the Daleks, Amy's Choice, A Good Man Goes to War, A Town Called Mercy, and Into the Dalek can be used as psychological metaphors. Dalek, Victory of the Daleks, and Into the Dalek being strong at showing the Doctor's burning hatred for the Daleks. The Runaway Bride with the genocide of the Rachnos, the punishments to the Family of Blood and A Good Man Goes to War are better indicators of the Doctor's rage than the Christmas Invasion. Journey's End can be used along with Amy's Choice to show the Doctor's own rage and hatred towards himself. There is a Dream Lord, a Valeyard, within all of us whispering. After all while Psychic Pollen gave the Dream Lord a voice, it was still the Doctor's own thoughts. One does not have to have lived over 900 years to develop a strong sense of self hatred. A Town Called Mercy brought in the Doctor's rage toward himself by making him see himself within Jex, as well as the guilt created by the lives lost by his own mercy toward the Daleks, The Cybermen, even The Master along with every other enemy he's dealt with. Whether it's a celebrated tale or an underrated story, much of Doctor Who can provide a bit of insight within our own minds.
