In this video we take a look at the Big Radials Nieuport 17 within Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS).
We will recreate Charles Godefroy's historic flight, initially cruising in over the city of Paris, before flying the aircraft through the Arc de Triomphe!

Hey mate thanks for the review. We're going to go over the sounds again as it shouldn't be that quite and the issues with the checklist. You mentioned the compass a couple times but I think you didn't realise you could tilt it as required. Max RPM is 1200.
My pleasure once again! To be clear, I did lower the audio / sounds in the video, so that everyone could hear my dulcet tones ; )
but yes, I think the sounds are the one area that would benefit from further enhancements. A bit more bass perhaps (to my untrained ear) and some enhancements to the environmentals would be just the ticket!
I actually realised the compass was on a swivel when I was watching the video back later haha; but really my point was simply that it would be tricky to fly a heading accurately with just the compass. I perhaps should have been clearer, as it wasn’t meant as a criticism (it’s as it should be), merely just a point of fact.
The RPM gauge is just a mystery to me then haha - I thought I’d got it figured out (I did RTFM). I never was much good with French at school mind you! : P
Congrats once again to you and the team for a really nice product! Seems the little Nieuport 17 has been warmly received. I’ll pin your comment, just so everyone can see that the Big Radials team are already back on it!

Does Big Radials plan on doing a Fokker Dr1 and maybe a Fokker D.VII? if so take my money please!
I can’t speak as to what Big Radials have in the works; but there is actually a freeware version of the DR-1 if that’s of any interest to you Bob (haven’t tried it myself, so I’m not sure whether it’s any good or not):

A very welcome addition to the sim. I am really looking forward to seeing what Big Radials have in store for us in the future. This basic stick and rudder flying is such a joy.
Agreed Terry! A nice addition and a very promising second offering from Big Radials. They seem to enjoy going for more unique aircraft, which is refreshing and I like their style. As you say, the more hands-on the better : )

Lovely review - also - lovely little cinematics towards the end. Tres stirring. (that's all my French done). I really like these old bi-planes (not so much the Waco) - the Steerman is brilliant...I think this is going on my list. When i got MSFS - i did not think i would get into it this much - yet here I am with way too many planes. All the gear,,,no idea. thanks again.

Yes, biplanes are great fun! I’ve actually only really gotten into them since MSFS myself. My dream would be for the Nieuport to have the same quality of sounds that the Stearman has, then it would be more or less perfect at its price point.

Haha, very true. Quite a jump on the channel and quite the leap forward in the intervening 50 odd years! It’s crazy to think that at the time this was cutting edge technology, no different from an F22 or Eurofighter - nowadays your typical GA aircraft could probably outperform it (though the Nieuport might still win on the firepower front haha).

Not really something that was touched on much in older civilian sims (though I suppose we did have the MS Sopwith Camel for many years haha), but such a fascinating part of aviation history, providing some really interesting machines. Hopefully we’ll see some more! I would love to see a nicely done Airco DH.2 actually - would be great for exploring the scenery!

I am so spoiled by "Rise of Flight".. where planes with rotary engines actually have precession, Blip Switch etc modeled, I whish MSFS could do that, too
I keep meaning to make a little bit of Rise of Flight content! There’s something so fascinating about aircraft / combat from that era. Certainly there was no noticeable gyroscopic effects etc modelled on the BR Nieuport, but they did give the aircraft a blip switch (and I managed to kill the engine with it haha).

I don’t think the channel is going to make me rich any time soon hehe, but it’s actually now at the point where it’s more or less cost neutral, which is great. I consider myself very lucky that I get to pursue my hobby, offset the costs and make videos that others enjoy / find useful. I think it’s a win-win overall! : )

dont worry, we had him covered. But i do wish all other devs would play the "media game" by giving out free copy to content creators. We do get a great deal of exposure from these kind of videos, so its only normal to me to help out the person making them! Its pretty obvious to me, dont know why some other devs dont do it (althought i know a few that does to be fair)

It’s funny, often it’s the smaller devs who are reticent to offer up a product for review etc (I would have assumed it would be the other way around). As you say, I’d like to think that it’s a two way street in terms of the benefits to both parties. To be fair, I don’t always accept review copies either; if the product is looking pretty iffy and it’s not something I think I’ll want to endorse, then generally I’ll politely avoid it. Some devs say they want an honest review and then of course aren’t happy when they get it haha. I try and paint everyone’s work in the best light that I can, without being dishonest.

Calling it radial is allright. But, the correct term is rotary because the cylinders rotate with the drive shaft around a fixed control shaft. Nice showcase btw
Haha, did I refer to it as a radial specifically? Ooops. Well I agree with you 100% either way. The developer is actually called "Big Radials", so perhaps that's why I had "radial" in my head at the time.

@@just_a_veteran7856 Thank you for your service! I was at my local town's WW2 memorial and we were reading the names of fallen soldiers. There was a young pilot who was shot down in Belgium when they were flying in a bomber aircraft. It must be a joy flying in Belgium. Have a nice one!

A Beaufighter would be lovely! I was going to say it’s perhaps a bit niche, but then so too is the Nieuport I suppose haha. MILVIZ are already working on a DHC-2 actually - I’m sure that will be top notch : )

Very quiet! As far as I know rotary engines lacked a traditional throttle. A blip switch would be used to turn the engine on or off, and some types would use a mechanism to limit RPM by preventing every x firing on the cylinders. Also, this aircraft is modelled as being squeaky clean. Rotary engines had total loss oil systems, meaning they would spray hot oil out everywhere inside the cowling (and into the pilot's face). Excessive use of the blip switch or lower RPM settings would risk fire as unburned fuel gets ejected alongside the oil. Fun!
Life expectancy must have been so low. Much respect for these pilots. Have you seen Adam Savage fly WW1 planes with lasers on them? The planes are owned by Peter Jackson.

Indeed it was, as chief Brody points out. Of course during this period, it wasn’t just the ever present danger of the enemy, but the machines themselves. Flying one of these things would in itself be a risky endeavour by modern standards! No harnesses, standing up in the cockpit to change a magazine, hot oil constantly making its way over to your face. I’m not sure about the other air forces, but the Brits weren’t even allowed parachutes - lest they suddenly lack “moral fibre” and decide to bail out (of course in actuality, losing an aircraft would have been a much lower cost to bare than losing a trained pilot - but preservation of life didn’t seem to feature heavily in WWI generally).
I’m certainly no expert - but the aerial war of WWI does sound like a fascinating and unique period in aviation. I believe there often was quite a lot of gallantry, chivalry and respect shown by both sides, at least in the early days.
Ones things for sure though; these you men were certainly as brave as any other.
No need to feel guilty old chap! It’s nothing you did wrong. I absolutely think it’s important that we appreciate and remember the sacrifices these young men made though - it’s in large part because of them, that we are so incredibly lucky to live as we do today. Remembering them is really the best way that we can thank them.

Gah, sorry to hear that. It’s amazing how variable this sim is for everybody. It’s one thing to have issues from the start; but quite another to have it all working fine one day, only to have it borked by an update the next. I hope you manage to figure it out / Asobo fix things up on their end!

Ahem... I updated my _somewhat_ out of date NVidia drivers and... no more crashes. Tiny bit embarrassing, but at least I'm flying again!
About "blipping". On a test flight of a plane with a recently installed engine (Cessna 182), I experienced loss of throttle control with the engine turning at 75 % (I was doing the initial break in flight on an overhauled engine). I terminated the break in flight upon realizing I had not throttle control, but the issue being, the plane was hauling along at cruise speed. As I turned back to the runway I was trying to figure out how I would get the plane slowed down for approach. Well, I recalled how WWI aircraft had rotary engines that could not be deep throttled, and so do land they would "blip" the engine, and so that's what I did, switched to single operation, and turned the mag off, and on. Got the plane slowed down to where I could lower flaps, and with those barn doors down, I would not exceed Vf, and so I announced to the tower what had happened, and after getting cleared to land, I controlled my decent rate by blipping the engine. Mag off. Mag on *BANG POP* as the engine started back up and ignited the fuel air in the muffler. Did this a couple more times, and then shut the engine off and dead sticked to a landing, used the rest of the momentum to taxi off the runway, and well, got out of the plane and kissed the ground. LOL. I just thought it was interesting using a 100 year or so old method to land a modern aircraft.

I've been really looking forward to this plane since they first teased it with a render of the La Rhone engine a few months back! I bought it straight away but I'm currently grounded due to spraining my ankle a few days ago so I can't use my rudder pedals, quite annoying! I can't wait for the ankle to heal up so I can get this bird in the air, even more so now I've watched your excellent vid!
It looks really great! You say the cockpit is pretty spartan but that's actually quite luxurious as initial models only had a tachometer so count your blessings you get a later included speedo and altimeter! I really like the notepad and essential hammer, I love that hammer even more that it's animated. I also really like that animated wing streamer, these small details really add a lot to this plane. I read in the manual that you can rotate the compass up and down to make it a bit more readable which is also quite nice and would aid quite a bit in navigation I imagine. The guns with pullable triggers are also quite a nice touch.
That engine really does sound quite anaemic as you say, in Rise of Flight it sounded quite a bit more impressive so disappointing this version sounds a lot tamer. I hope they improve on that. I also noticed that kinda 2d effect on the spinning rotary in your external shots which isn't great but I guess done for performance reasons or something. Still nice they show the whole block rotating though! Your engine cutting out in the dive was probably due to negative G's causing the engine being starved of fuel so it's quite nice to see that modelled. IRL you had to be very careful in the dive as that lower half wing was quite prone to snapping at high speeds which obviously isn't ideal. Rise of Flight modelled that quite nicely as well but I doubt we'll ever see anything like that in MSFS unfortunately. I've read a fair bit about WW1 aviation in the past and turning the engine off fully during final wasn't uncommon so you did nothing wrong there even if it was by accident ;) I do like how they modelled the engine blip as well, that's pretty vital for an old rotary like this.
One final nitpick: Godfrey didn't fly a 17 under the Arc but a later 27 model but I'll let you off this time ;). Thanks a lot for the great video as always, I really enjoyed it. And some good flying too. I must admit to puckering up a tiny bit when you flew under the Arc hah! I really can't wait for my stupid ankle to heal up so I can take this bird out for a spin myself. Your video has just made that wait a bit more agonising!
Oh forgot to comment on the moustache: very nice!
Oh and also those things on top of the wing aren't handles but are bellcranks. Don't really know much about the mechanics of different crank systems but apparently they're still used in some modern GA planes for the rudder but they're more out of sight these days.
Just piling on with replying to my own comment here lol but I was wondering about some of the flight dynamics of this bird. IRL rotary equipped planes were a bit torquey due to that big spinning engine block up front, also it meant that they would turn a bit faster one way than the other due to the engine basically pulling the nose down in the direction of rotation. I was wondering if any of that is modelled here? Also they had quite a bit of adverse yaw IRL due to them being quite tail heavy, I know MSFS has a bit of a problem with adverse yaw in general but how is it in this bird? Cheers for putting up with my walls of text!
I vaguely recall hearing the term, but I had no idea that’s what those were haha. For a bit of mechanical leverage are they? I still reckon in a pinch, you could fly the aircraft with them whilst changing a magazine though ; )

Hello, great review, as usual. From memory, the AW Siskin inter-war fighter of the RAF was a sesquiplane.If not a sesquiplane, it had differently-sized wings.

Ah well there you go! I’ve gone from never having heard of a sesquiplane, to now having heard of two, all in the space of a day haha. In fact I had never heard of the Siskin, so had to go and look it up. I don’t know the technicalities of what makes something a sesquiplane, but the wings are certainly different sizes on the Siskin. The difference is actually much pronounced on the Siskin, than with the N17 actually. Quite a funny looking machine.

Haha, you aren’t the first one to say that (re having the Stearman). The Nieuport is a lovely little offering from Big Radials, clearly a labour of love and fairly priced I think. I very much enjoy cruising the countryside in it, the only thing I would love to see, is sounds on a par with the Stearman (which has some of the most immersive sounds to date). I see from Discord that you’ve been patrolling the skies in her anyway hehe.

Great flying - in old parlance 'Tally Ho' :-). Looks a good small aircraft considering the low cost - well worth it really. I personally would most likely not have any use for it as I use IL2 Flying Circus for the WW1 aircraft itch. But I do like this aircraft and I do get it would be a different experience in MSFS. So I guess it's horses for courses :-). Great video again though - love the editing / presentation style as well as the pro's and cons section. The Marseillais was a great touch :-)

Flying Circus is yet another thing that I picked up in the Steam sales and need to give a go! XD I have a tiny bit of time in Rise of Flight and keep meaning to get some WWI content on the channel. All in good time I suppose haha.

What is the "venturii" like tube on the port side just in front of the cockpit?
Hi John,
I'm not 100% sure in the case of the Nieuport 17 specifically, but I would hazard a guess that it's either present in the place of a pitot tube, or is used to provide suction to any gyroscopic instruments (I can't recall if the N17 has any). Venturi tubes were often used early on in both regards, as I understand it.

I’d be the very first to admit that I’m not very good at playing spot the difference haha: I did have a little look online and there does seem to be some variation on wheel types for the Nieuport 17, some larger, some smaller, some even more like bicycle wheels. I’ve no idea what’s original and what’s a more modern retrofit; in short I couldn’t say how accurate Big Radials representation of them is.
Overall though, as you say, I think it’s worthy of consideration; certainly a very nice little offering from the Big Radials team and great to see something a little different!

@@IntotheBlueSimulations In the last few weeks the H135 helicopter has been my favourite aircraft to fly in MSFS. And while photogrammetry is has its pros and cons, man is it fun to fly over some of these cities. London, Munich, New York and Los Angeles are all amazing, especially with some addon sceneries.
You inspired me to give photogrammetry another go Volker and I have to say, I’m glad I did! It’s working much better on my newer machine and whilst it isn’t perfect, it’s great fun to explore as you say. I think the trick is to try and ignore the details. As with most things flight-simulation, it’s easy to get hung up on what’s missing; but once you forget about it and just start exploring, the quality is good enough to suspend disbelief and it’s great fun. I just did my local city on this occasion, but it sounds like I’ve got some exploring to do!

@@IntotheBlueSimulations Very happy to hear that! Isn't this kind of the "uncanny valley" effect? The more realistic the sim looks, the more we notice the little things that are off. In FSX with added landclass and mesh, I was super impressed that I could identify the hill on which I grew up. Nowadays in MSFS I find it super annoying that one iconic old roman building in my home town is rendered as an office block (medium sized city, no photogrammetry). The mesh is great, street layout precise, and the ground textures are all photorealistic. But this little detail is driving me crazy ... ;)

I was blown away by VR the first time I tried it. I had an Oculus CV1 and looking back the resolution was pretty poor, but I barely even noticed it at the time. Now I’m constantly wishing my G2 had a wider FOV, smoother framerate, better lenses etc etc. Given the rapidity with which technology advances, it’s amazing how quickly out expectations catch up with it!
Maybe one day we’ll get the perfect flight sim that we are all happy with. . . but probably not! XD

It something with aircrafts from this era that makes them look cartoonish no matter the effort put in to the modelling. But I think some aspects might be more related to rendering in general in MSFS, maybe ray-tracing would help on the aircraft while sticking to conventional rendering for scenery. There are some static shadowing in the textures in this aircraft that looks quite unnatural around corners (ambient occlusion?).
I can definitely see what you mean Lars. I suppose to some degree, these sorts of aircraft almost end up looking a bit like a cliche of themselves. Even some of the real world pics of the aircraft look a little bit “cartoonish” somehow. More-so on the Nieuport I think, as it’s a compact little package and the white colouring probably doesn’t help (as opposed to drab greys, olives, greens etc on other aircraft).
MSFS can look amazing at times, but it definitely has a slightly more “cartoonish” look to it than say X-Plane for example. They both have their strengths and weaknesses mind you.
I gather we will get ray-tracing in MSFS at some point, as well of course as DX12. Hopefully one or both of those (dependant on one’s system) will help improve the look of the sim further still.

Indeed, I was thinking it would be great fun to explore some of the WWI battlefields in etc - I know some of the memorials are modelled and such like. Definitely a trip I plan on doing in the future.

Haha, it probably was quite a dressing down and (if I recall correctly) he never flew again after (although I believe that was a personal choice). Probably worth it though; to go down as a legend and (as Equious sates) never have to pay for a Pernod again! : D

Haha, exactly! The aircraft were trying to kill you, the enemy were trying to kill you. The b*llocking of a lifetime probably seems like quite a non-event thereafter XD
I gather that’s why the stunt was performed; the “top brass” wanted the pilots to march with the infantry during the parade, but the pilots felt that was a slight on what they had done / endured through the war. Far enough I say!

Is that streamer from the starboard wing strut a rudimentary slip indicator?
I believe they were actually more of a form of aircraft identification (so the lead aircraft could be differentiated for example), maybe even a bit of showmanship ha.
I don’t see why it couldn’t also be used to judge your slip angle but then again, in an open cockpit, I guess you could perhaps simply judge things based on which side of your face was being hit by the airflow haha.

i thought the France update added photogrammetry for Paris. :/ if it did, it seems very limited in scope.
It did indeed Bernard! I tend to have photogrammetry turned off in my sim, as my internet connection isn’t the best and it therefore tends to leave the scenery looking a bit like a nuclear blast-zone. I also find it tanks the sims performance. That being said, I should give it another try, now that I have an updated PC. . .

I’m guessing you purchased from the in-sim Marketplace? Unfortunately, any aircraft purchased directly from the Marketplace, will not display any weapons (this is an Asobo stipulation and I believe it’s done to maintain the sim’s ESRB rating). Perhaps if you can get in touch with Big Radials directly and give them proof of your purchase, they may be kind enough to give you a copy of the full download, but otherwise there’s not a lot that can be done I’m afraid. Quite a few people have been caught out by this issue and I think Asobo really needs to make this limitation of the Marketplace clearer.

This reminded me of Adam Savage flying in one of Peter Jackson's WW1 planes BUT with lasers! The planes have sensors and they shoot each other which must be a blast when it's just a game. It would've been totally terrifying in real life. Just like the scene from 1917 😥My respects for these pilots.
I saw there was a video of that, haven't watched it myself though (I should). As you say, obviously a very different beast from the real thing, but I'll bet it's great fun! Probably about as close as you could (and would want) to get! I'd love to try it myself.

I do have to say the sounds are the first thing that came to my mind while watching the review.
Something like the textures of the trousers of the pilot being a lower resolution is not really anything I'd care too much about.
Lets be honest, you don't even see your pilot 90% of the time.
Overall I do have to say, that this probably isn't the right plane for me. I feel like the Waco or Steerman would suit me better, even though this is actually one of the nicer planes.
I agree, couldn’t really give a damn about the pilots trousers haha, but I know some people care as much about the external model as the internal one. It’s a very nice offering, it is just the sounds that could use some work though yeah.
If it’s not for you, it’s not for you. I used to be very conservative on my addon purchasing before I started the channel. We can’t own them all! XD

My memory could be suffering but Im sure I can recollect the FS9 vintage aircraft VC's looking better than this one...Not fussed at all on this developer. They need to lift their game before I part with my money

Fair enough though, horses for courses as always! Personally I very much enjoy the little Nieuport, though I would certainly appreciate a more complex sound package for it. Feels wrong to be in an open cockpit and not hear the wind in your hair!

lighting is very poor
It can be a bit hit and miss in MSFS. Sometimes it looks stunning; usually early morning / late evening, but during the middle of the day it can often looked a bit washed out.

Do you think so James? I wouldn’t say it’s that bad, but I defiantly think it would benefit from some work. My takeaway was that the engine need some more bass and the aircraft could really use some “environmental” sounds; eg wind noise, airframe creak etc. The DC Designs Stearman does that sort of thing very well for example.
