    I flew in Chipmunks when I was an air cadet in the late 80's from RAF Finningley back in the day...loved it...remember lining up behind a phantom, followed by a Vulcan! seeing both take off before we slowly trickled down the runway!!! I was so short, I could barely see over the instruments lol

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 роки тому

      Oh wow Craig, that’s about as good of a personal air display as one is likely to get haha! The Phantom is my favourite jet of all time and the Vulcan certainly isn’t far behind - awesome.
      Glad the video bought back some fond memories. If you did pick up the AH Chipmunk, I hope you’re enjoying it!
      Cheers and all the best : )

    Excellent review. I flew in these with both the Air Cadets and when I was in the RAF. Great representation of the battery starter, these were known as Trolly Acks. Ack was probably for accumulator, an older term for a battery.

      Thanks very much Simon! Ah, you got the golden ticket - Air Cadets and then the real deal! : )
      I believe you're correct that "Ack" comes from accumulator. I never realised the Chippie used one until now, but I am familiar with the term / equipment from the Spit.

    I hate to say it but, after some higher quality aircraft have been released, addons like this just wont be getting a place in my hangar. Even if I find the aircraft itself an interesting one, I feel I always end up going back to the more in depth aircraft that both feel alive and have something to monitor throughout the flight. Temperatures, wear and tear, etc. Thanks for the review!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, I'm sure you wont be the only one in that camp INR! I totally get it and feel the same way myself to some degree; personally I can't resist picking up aircraft I am fond of (like the Chippie) haha, but I do then find myself wishing they had more functionality / fidelity etc. That being said, I've still had a lot of fun with the aircraft overall.
      My pleasure on the review! Thanks for watching and all the best : )

      Hi Kent,
      A little bit of shameless self promotion if I may haha:
      ua-cam.com/video/0h5YkJ6P0BQ/v-deo.html
      If you’re looking for A2A-esque offerings; the Wing42 B247 (though it currently has a few significant issues), FSReborn Sting S4 and the MILVIZ C310 (the best GA aircraft in the sim to date) are your best bets. A2A look to be closer to releasing their Comanche in MSFS now also.
      I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )

      Ah well lucky you PR, I’ve always heard that the Chipmunk is a joy to fly! As I mentioned during the video, definitely an aircraft I’d like to get my hands on one day. . .

    Hi, thank you again for a great review. I first flew the Chipmunk in 1974 at the start of my 27 years in the RAF. That flight was from RAF Rufforth, near York, in July (48 years ago 😳) as part of the flying grading course. I was really looking forward to this aircraft as soon as I heard it was coming to the sim. I hope they get on top of the bugs you have mentioned, and that wing texture. I will be getting this for the sim provided I see Aeroplane Heaven tackle the issues you have raised.

      Is the 40kt touch down real? From the video it makes me feel as if the aircraft is still a bit "floaty"

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Peter,
      You're most welcome as ever! Never had the pleasure of flying the Chipmunk myself, but I hear it is a complete joy of an aircraft. I'm sure quite a memorable aeroplane for you, if it started you down the path towards your many years in the RAF!
      I can't say whether or not anything has been done about the wing texturing, but Aeroplane Heaven did just release a patch for the aircraft and it takes care of the fuel issues, pilot model issue etc.
      The AH Chippie is still far from perfect, but I must say I have been very much enjoying it overall : )
      All the best!

      Hi MR,
      I know you probably weren’t asking me and I can’t give you a definite answer (having never flown the Chipmunk), but 40 knots doesn’t seem completely unreasonable. The flaps down / power on stall speed of the Chippy is 35kts (according to the real-world POH)!
      All the best : )

    When I was taking lessons at Edinburgh Turnhouse years ago we used to have to slot ourselves in between the RAF Chipmunks and newer trainers doing circuits. They were always over the east end of Edinburgh. All gone shortly afterwards though, that was early 80's.

    Great video. Like many others brought back memories of numerous AEF flights in Chipmunks I had from 5AEF (Cambridge UAS) in the early 1980s. Squadron Leader Ced Hughes was CO there and was one of the pilot's who undertook the record breaking flight in 2 Chipmunks. Since flown in the SA Bulldogs and current Grob Tutors at 6 AEF at RAF Benson (still with RAFAC and in uniform since 1977!). My only observations are the Chipmunks we had were cartridge started, the engine sounds nothing like a Gypsy Major and agree with others about the poor canvas covering over the ribs. Never heard it referred to as a poor man's Spitfire although the BBMF have one or two as tail draggers for conversion onto Spitfires and Hurricanes. Flew in WK562, WP979, WP970, WB652, WP837, WG308, WB627 & WK517. Must check out where they are now! The Kirby Cadet Mk3 glider XN246 I trained in at RAF Manston was hanging up in Southampton Aircraft museum!

      Thanks very much, Jeff! I’m really glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some nice memories.
      That’s an interesting story, thanks for sharing. I wasn’t aware that the flight in question had taken place, I shall have to do some reading (especially since I did all of my AEF at Benson). I gather many Chipmunks have been retrofitted with electric starters, so I guess that’s what Aeroplane Heaven were modelling here (though a cartridge start option would have been cool). I’ve never heard a Gypsy Major myself (at least not from the cockpit), but sounds always seem to leave the audience divided haha. The AH Chippy certainly isn’t perfect and it would have been nice to see Aeroplane Heaven continue to work on the aircraft a little bit more but nevertheless, it’s still an enjoyable option for the sim.
      Thanks very much for your thoughts. All the best ! : )

    I will buy it for no other reason than nostalgia. A chippy was my first fight experience many years ago. At that time they were retiring them from the RAF as basic trainers. Funnily enough, to this day I remember the oily/avgas smell of the cockpit. I think my wife would complain if I try and recreate that in my study in the name of immersion.

    Another great review - a pleasure to watch. I was born at RAF Halton (many eons ago). My father was posted back there in the mid sixties and I went to Primary School there for a couple of years. The hospital is gone but the old married quarter and school remains. I used to see the Chipmunks flying, though that might have been when we were based at Henlow. Great to see this aircraft in the sim.

      Hi Ryan,
      Thanks very much for both the request and your comment regarding the video!
      I would love to be able to cover product updates more regularly, but alas I'm usually short of time as it is. I haven't covered the "new new" versions of either aircraft to date, but I have covered both addons relatively recently (at least to some degree):
      ua-cam.com/video/yLeZMK_7oPw/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/zOMmuHXaeus/v-deo.html
      I'm not too sure when I might have a chance to look at the Turbo Arrow again, but I do plan to cover the C414 once more, once the product comes out of early access.
      I hope that helps a little and thanks again for the suggestion (I'm always happy to hear them).

    Enjoyed the review.
    30 years ago - I built a beautiful Super Chipmunk in balsa. I did a test run on the 10cc powerful motor. It roar up to max power. I could hardly hold it with hands, not able to reach throttle. Hot oil exhaust hit my hand. Scared - I sold it. Lucky, the new owner enjoyed many flights for years.
    Back then - for me, a successful landing was finding all parts. Sounds like a joke, but it was not.

    A nice model for the flight sim. My favourite also and best I've flown for real. Just a few things you've missed. A lot of the gauges are pre chipmunk and seem to come from their spitfire. For example the slip and turn and oil temperature and pressure gauges. Check out the provided manual or any online pictures and videos and you'll see what I mean. The most obvious is that the flap lever works the other way around in the real T10. Flaps down is lever fully back. Still bought it however and hopefully they'll make it more accurate over time.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 роки тому

      Thanks very much for the feedback Anthony!
      I did indeed miss the gauges, but it's obvious now that you mention it haha. The flap lever I initially put down to some British idiosyncratic design (I did wonder), but yourself and others did state thereafter that it's in the wrong sense. I see that it has been mentioned to Aeroplane Heaven, but they seem to believe that according to the manual they have things correct. Having now read the POH myself, I'm not really sure where they got that idea from (an honest mistake though I'm sure).
      As you say, hopefully AH will continue to improve the Chippie - it's nice to see that they have patched it once already. It's not an aircraft I have flown myself, I certainly hope to do so one day, but the virtual version will have to do for now ; )
      Thanks again and all the best! : )

    Glad to see that you managed to maintain your license after your landing in The Mall! Friends in high places? A very fair and comprehensive review, and I'm sure that the guys at AH will act on your recommendations. I think the real strength of this aircraft is the flight model. As opposed to most of the aircraft you review, I do have some Chipmunk time, around 98 hours. In my opinion AH have accurately modelled the Chipmunk's handling. It's light and direct on the controls, and, as you noted, will happily sit in a 60kts glide all day long, or as long as there is sky. I reckon the sounds are pretty much bang-on, especially the "snarl" (if a Gipsy can snarl) on take-off power. I guess I am biased though, as my real love and interest lies in vintage aviation. I'm counting the days until Ant's Tiger Moth arrives!

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Thanks ITBS - when i was in my late teens running around with a rifle seemed more attractive lol. Real reason is my old next door neighbour landed on D-Day with Lord Lovat and he used to tell me stories, show me photos etc so it kind of inspired me as he fought at Dieppe, Lofoten Raids, landed on D-Day and later was an instructor for the Royal Marines at Achnacarrie following a battlefield injury. So my inspiration was to be in the dirt like him I guess lol. So much so he attended my passing out parade in the army - one of my proudest moments to have him attend. 2 years ago (pre-Covid), I went to France and did the whole D-Day tour thing taking in all the UK and US landing beaches, pegasus bridge etc but the main reason I went was that I wanted to stand on the beach he had landed on :-).

I can’t even begin to imagine the feeling as they waited, heading inbound towards the beach. . .

    A very comprehensive review, thank you. I first flew in the Chipmunk in the late 70s at RAF Shawbury with 8 AEF and then went onto complete a flying scholarship. Having flown many hours in the real aircraft, I still find Rick Pipers original Chipmunk a pleasure in FSX. Justflight’s Chipmunk is ok, so with that in mind I was looking forward to the AH release. My overall impression it was worth buying, it feels right. I use it in VR with a HP Reverb and its pleasurable. There are as reported some significant procedural error/bugs, power application, engine starting etc…. But overall passable, however, and it’s a big however the wing modelling and textures are poor. One of the main issue is the reproduction of the fabric covering and shape. The gap between the flap and mainplane with flaps fully down is unrealistic. Thanks again for a great review.

      Rick Piper's Chippie was indeed a joy back in the day and I would love to see more addons from that vintage making their way back into MSFS (as we just saw with Dave Garwood's Hunter). I had Just Flight's Chipmunk in FSX (actually made by Aeroplane Heaven coincidentally) and I never really fell in love with it. I feel that AH have done a much better job with the aircraft this time around. As you say, it's a far from perfect rendition of the aircraft, but it broadly feels the part and importantly, I have been having a lot of fun in the aircraft. Graphically I doubt we'll see a drastic overall from Aeroplane Heaven, but hopefully some 3rd party repaints will take care of the texturing at least.
      Cheers and all the best! : )

    Very good review as usual. Sounds good but Tachometer 5 min limit 2550rpm (5 mins wouldn't reach that though) and overspeed limit 2675rpm (20 secs). I was groundcrew on AEF flight and sneaked quite a few flights after all cadets flew. Many happy times, But will wait a bit for aeroplane heaven to sort out the bugs a bit

      Cheers for the info, much appreciated. I had assumed it was the classic full power takeoff at 3,000rpm etc haha. Someone else had mentioned that some of the gauges in the AH Chippie cockpit are not period accurate and that perhaps they have replaced the engine rpm gauge with a prop rpm gauge. I don't know what your thoughts on that are?

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations The clock type rpm gauge is correct and other gauges as well if i remember correctly as you would know the pitch controls Max rpm and as the chipmunk is a fixed pitch the rpm is lower at start of takeoff than when lifting off (too many years 1986) always a compromise so cannot remember what the indications were (no portable cameras then) seems a very big oversight on Aeroplane Heavens usual high quality Spitfire 1a.

      Ah ok Kenneth, well thank you very much for getting back to me. You’ve really got to watch the rpm in the Chippie then - seems even just going full throttle on the ground can cause an overspeed (if AH have that right)!

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations What they've done is incorrect. it would be something like say 1900-2000 rpm at start of roll and max at say 2300rpm when at V2 with throttle fully open so down to the fixed pitch setup so a finer pitch would be a shorter takeoff but lower cruise speed but also risk of overspeed or a coarser pitch will be lower rpm and longer takeoff run but better cruise. In terms of my "favourite" type though, it would probably have to be this sort of thing. I love vintage / warbird style aircraft and one day (perhaps a bit closer to retirement haha) I would love to own a share in a Chipmunk or Tiger Moth etc. Gliding was probably the nicest flying experience I've ever had, but I wouldn't say it was my "favourite".

    A shame the developers haven't done their due diligence, the RPM at take-off is about 900 rpm too high. Static RPM is 2100 with the red line at 2550, and that's only achievable in the air. Cruise RPM is 2100 which will give around 90 kts indicated. If I treated the Chipmunk I fly (G-BWUN) to these RPM settings I would need to send the engine for inspection after each flight!

    Hi I enjoyed your review as usual, you picked up the same, of the more negitive features as I did. I like most people, have fond memories of the "Chippy" it was the first aircraft that I ever had a flight in and the first I got to fly. That was with 8 AEF Queens University, Sydenham Belfast around 1962. The AH Chipmunk was a must buy for me, I also bought their P-51 when first released. I love the cartridge starter as that's what happened in all my flights, I have switch box that allows me to switch the power on and the magneto switch start gives it the bang on start up. Overall I really like the aircraft model, the wing upper surfaces are NQR nor is the pilot/student helmets but I love flying it and must try to not bounce it so much on touch down and the same for yaw control on the runway. Keep up the great reviews, it is what makes me decide on what I would buy if the aircraft is something that interests me. Off to work on real aircraft tomorrow and might get the chance to call in with Orbx ?

    Another superb and frank review. I used to have the FSX version but wasn't a fan of it and I hope that they can rectify the problems that you found with this new build. I never joined the ATC as my Dad said that he didnt want to be a glorified taxi driver two nights a week. So as a result, I had to resort to flying in Harvards instead. But now have quite a few Chipmunk hours under my belt in 7 different airframes and have always enjoyed the hours spent in the cockpit. Not quite sure why the cartridge starter is included as that is not fitted in any UK based machines and hasnt for years (same as for Auster 9s) as the owner would need a firearms certificate, so would either be hand swung or have a starter fitted as was the norm with Army Chippies. And not much play with the oleos, thought would be better if more articulated especially when on the ground, sits a little too high.

      Ha! Well I have to sing my Mum's praises there, for being a more than accommodating taxi driver! 2, sometimes 3 times a week and the unit I went to wasn't close either. Then again, there were times when I didn't want to go and she still took me XD
      Still, as I think I've mentioned before, I admire the fact that you have been able to fly all of these wonderful and interesting aircraft and it sounds like that was all through a lot of time and effort on your part - so perhaps things worked out well in a roundabout way.
      I must admit, I do rather like the "bang" of the cartridge starter haha. It might be nice if AH had perhaps given the civilian variants an electric starter then though. One thing I was wondering; what is the purpose of the acc trolley, if one is using a cartridge starter (if you happen to know)?

    Clearly you tried to like this hoarder, yet quite a long backlog to work through before i throw money on it, thanks to your evaluation. Let's hope the devs watch your review and are able and willing to step up their standards. One comment to a possible substitute to the handbook, due to the reduced complexity in GA aircrafts... Wouldn't a (few) tutorial videos on the devs website/UA-cam instead of a written leaflet do the introduction as well as a handbook? Often this written stuff isn't that helpful at all... and if you really want to learn a plane you're willing to read the original POH, too. Did this back in the days of XP on the C172, couldn't come up with exactly the same model, yet really enjoyable. I would prefer to get a quick tutorial video and a PDF of the original POH delivered within the software package. In the end this would even pressure the devs to a decent system depth. Cheers! 💙

Fortunately Aeroplane Heaven do seem to have been fairly quick to patch the product on this occasion and have at least fixed the most glaring bugs.
      A video tutorial series could certainly offer a decent (and arguably more "accessible") substitute to a written manual. I suppose both formats have their respective advantages and most tutorial series I've seen from developers do tend to be a little bit lacklustre in nature (the PMDG ones were excellent, but they seem to have dried up. . .). As you say, might "encourage" the devs to find a few of their own bugs as well haha.

Put the flight/ground power switch in ground, set up to start and pull the starter ring, she'll pop right off, no battery, then flip the switch back to flight and off you go. I'm not sure, but I'm not convinced the RAF chippy actually had a battery, think they always started off ground power, if you look at the RCAF versions there is a retrofitted battery switch ontop of the glare shield as though the battery was a later addition

      I'm wondering about the start procedure in general; specifically what is the point of the accumulator trolley, if the aircraft uses a cartridge start. . . You may well be right about the lack of battery though. I haven't had a chance to read the real-world POH in full yet, but shall try and do so over the weekend.

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Hmmm, that's strange, as I messed around with it and got it to fire up with just the accumulator trolley, no batteries, maybe a random fluke.
      Yeah, it does seem weird you'd need the accumulator trolley for the start with a cartridge start. I mean, I can see it being handy say for maintenance, to allow the techs to power up the electrical systems without running the engine to do any checks/tests etc they need to, but yeah, not sure why it'd be needed for the start

    • @Streaky100001
      @Streaky100001 2 роки тому

      Ok, so after reading that I was curious, had a google for the real world pilots manual. So, the aircraft does have internal accumulators on a 24V system, so with the Ground/Flight switch in flight you should have 24V power supplied to the aircraft. Some Chippies apparently had an electric starting system rather than the Coffman cartridge starter that this variant uses, and for them there is a procedure stated for starting off ground supplies using the accumulator trolley. Where no electric starter is fitted it's stated that the only purposes of the ground power is for testing the electrical circuits. It does state that while parked, the Ground/Flight switch must be left in ground, presumably this acts as a battery master then. So, from reading that it sounds like this is some form of bug with the addon.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, that all agrees with what I came to understand Streaky. Seems like the accumulator trolley is “doubling up” a little bit, given the cartridge start, but I guess it’s not inaccurate per se (if it was used for ground tests etc). I figured the Ground / Flight switch was as described so I would agree, I think the aircraft is a bit bugged on the electrical front.
      Cheers for getting back to me! Much appreciated : )

      Still, credit where it is due; overall AH did a nice job with the Chipmunk. It doesn't raise the bar, but it flies nicely, looks the part and has one of their better soundsets to date (it's relatively bug free now also).

      I don't 100% understand the question I'm afraid. When you say "voice activation", do you mean for commentary, or for controlling the aircraft? For the former, there is no such mod as far as I am aware, for the later there is Voice Attack. As you say, the sim does offer a "headphone" audio option by default, but that's about it.

      I'm sure you have it figured out by now but as you correctly guessed, it is only on the civilian versions of the Chippie, that you can use the Asobo pilot models. It is a pain that this then only affords you the use of a couple of liveries, though I expects some 3rd part repainters will take care of that (and swapping the liveries around probably isn't too tricky either).

      I agree that the aircraft doesn't feel as full of "life" as it could / should. Aeroplane Heaven did actually just update their Spitfire sound package and it now includes some associated sound effects when maneuvering - unfortunately it simply sounds like someone left a spanner loose down the back though haha (still, commendable that they took the user feedback onboard and tried). It's not a perfect solution, but currently I find FSRealistic is a good tool for addressing these sorts of shortcomings.

It is a great little piece of kit and although it can take a bit of getting used to (it's not 1:1 head movement), it becomes second nature very quickly. TrackIR isn't a cheap device obviously, but I've only had one breakage in 15 years of use, so I think that's a pretty good return on my investment overall.

      Thanks very much for the info Marshie! That’s kind of what I figured, although it sounds worse than I thought haha. TrackIR definitely has the edge in that regard, as the camera only moves when you move you’re head (and you can adjust sensitivity / movement curves etc). On the flip side, you can end up straining your eyes a little with TrackIR, if you’re trying to turn your head through a large angle whilst still looking at the screen (again you can mitigate this effect with response curves though).
