- 4 Car Terms That Went Mainstream! Sleeper build car guys, Sleeper build non-car guys, why be one when you CAN BE BOTH! (Me on my way to Twin Turbo a Honda Accord as I pack on sick gains at the gym) It's funny to hear Gym Bros call it a new term, when they used it in 2022, acting like they own it or something. Us Car Guys have been using Sleeper Builds since the 1950s thank you very much Fitness community! The thumbnail is not mocking, it is meant to be a joke. I feel most Fitness bros are usually chill and humble so hopefully they won't mind.

Yeah my car is a sleeper. Because it never wakes up.
Starts aggressively grinding the starter over and over.
Take this pin you poor lost soul 😂
have you told it to wake up?

my car is a sleeper...I only drive it in my dreams
Back when I was a kid people would tune Volkswagen Beatles, the rear engine rear wheel drive layout and the extremely cheap price made it a no brainer, plus parts were everywhere. Probably one of the earliest sleepers.

speaking about "clapped out"
I like using the term "battle damage" :)
😂 this is a good way of looking at it
Honestly, that's actually a good way to describe a damage on like a drift missile, or something like that. Like "yeah bro, my 240SX got that battle damage" I don't know maybe it's too cheesy...
Or something to remember at if its Maters case.
Could use the Counter Strike terminology "Battle scarred", "Field tested" or "Well worn"
Or a more insider term "high float", referring to the decimal value to determine the skin's condition.
I think that "battle damage" refers more to stuff OR cars in this case, that have their "just for visuals" parts probably out of shapey but the stuff "that keeps 'em runnin'" still being untouched or properlly maintaned - aka imho a "clapped out car" is something that has its running parts broken as well as its visuals (body panels and such) meanwhile "battle ready" is a machine which has its visual, no-function-servin parts broken, but it is still fully or more than that capable parts - like if a car has a fully maintained engine that in its current state will never leave you stranded anywherey if its wheels, suspension, brakes etc. leave the car battle ready then it basically means imho a "machine which under ongoing or current stress will not stop" whereas a clapped out is "just a bit more stress / worn out" and the car stops alltogether.
Poverty spec is really funny when you refer to like base model bmws that don’t have all the buttons
you can get a high spec beamer one month and the other month have a poverty spec because you didnt renew the subscripiton for the heated seats lol
Why? I don't get it
@@Pia-ho9dm there are some blank buttons in older base model bmws that would do something in a higher spec but doesn’t in a lower spec
A sleeper PC build is also great theft protection.
OHHHHHHHH. thats actually a good use! ive had streamer friends who get their pc stolen when they transport it in their car..broken windows n all
My favorite are the "Poverty Buttons" on my dash. You know the blank ones that are there just to let you know you didn't spend the extra cash to get those options.
Keep up the great content. Stay Happy and Healthy
Uh.. I always thought clapped out meant heavy modified. I have some people to apologize to...
OH NO LOL
Same here💀
I think you got it mixed up with maxed out
Same here lmao
If we use a really loose definition, we COULD say that heavy modification can be synonymous with clapped out lol
stock was used in the early days of nascar, a stock car was originally what was seen on a showroom floor, the cars weren't souped up in any way, but as nascar developed "stock"cars became different from stock cars, so we started using bone stock, souped up comes from racing horses where there owners would feed them amphetamines in there souped, and the term was carried over because the first nascar and other racing series used horse racing tracks, so when a car was significantly faster it was like a.souped up horse, so the car was souped uo
5:38 Tokyo Mater is what came to my mind when i heard stock, my brothers and I would use it as an insult
I'm also seeing people call bbls, wide body kits 🤣🤣🤣

I’m 31, not considered an “old timer” yet, but the term bone stock goes way back. I learned the term from boomers when I was a kid learning about cars. It actually is surprising that people are unaware of the term, yet at the same time doesn’t surprise me.
Altima are sleepers then
They are grocery cars, but they always pass every car, even ZR1 C8😂
My dad has Altima, and I even did a vid where we gapping some V6 Mustang. I do suspect that the guy didn't race at all, but the vid was really impressive and I was cheered up at work.

“Car culture” nowadays is so brain dead that anything would be a sleeper to them if it isn’t a supercar, a GTR, or a Supra.
thank you for putting some respect on mater at 5:36, that is exactly where i first heard it
My clapped-out base-trim hooptie was "poverty spec" in the sense that it dang near left me in poverty after all the repairs it needed lol.
Used to joke I was buying "speed parts" for it, because the parts would make it capable of achieving speeds again... Like, multiple miles an hour! And not even on a truck! :p
Poverty spec equivalent in Finland is kinda funny
”Fur cap model” in translation
Might’ve originated from lack of a/c when it was still an optional extra like passenger mirrors
And the car so cold inside that you need winter clothing in the car
I remember when Sleeper Build was getting popular on PCs
I wanted to try it out, and because I didn't had liquid cooling, the thing almost cooked itself. Old PC cases didn't had good airflow lol.
I kid you not, donut just posted a clapped out 350z video while I was watching the clapped out segment here😂
'Clapped out' definitely predates cars. I've seen it used to refer to horses and people too. I can't find a definitive origin for it, though I've seen several plausible ones: hare hunting(an exhausted hare sits upright on it back legs and takes giant breaths that make its front legs appear to clap, apparently), variety theatre (audiences clapping to interrupt a boring act to hurry the show along, and/or the 'slow clap' of an audience bored of waiting for a show), or even prostitution ('clap' being a career-ending STI - no, not Subaru Technica International!).
5:00 in my short experience of dealing with vintage vehicles I find "bone stock" or just "stock" to be more of a compliment. I guess the old something is the more rare it is to be unmodified.
neat thing about sleeper pcs is that a lot of parts nowadays are standardized because of ATX
you can put a brand new motherboard, powersupply and whatever else in a old case as long as theres room
all the mounting holes and such still line up
Dude ATX was standard when I started building pcs in like 99-2000.
I love how Bladed is more open about of his enjoyment of gaming pc's
I hate whenever people see I a high mileage car and immediately call it clapped out because yes some cars that made it that long were used and abused but other were taken complete car of. A good example of this was a while back on a auction site (bring a trailer i think it was) there was a nsx for auction and it had 300k miles but it had been taken complete care of by its owner and look brand new from the factory it even had the original paint if I remember correctly.
people are just ignorant theres no fixing that we can just complain to eachother about it lol
Poverty spec is crazy to me because id much rather have a base model grocery getter than a grocery getter with all the options, all those options are just features that can and will break weeks after ur warranty expires 😂
There are still LAN gaming events that you bring your PC in. Like a car party, that is why you build them. Same reasons why you want to smoke ferraris with sleeper volvo, you can bring "yellowed" office tower that will smoke every RGB fishtank at benchmarking. ( I personally have RGB fishtank PC, I gamed on office boxes for far too long). The ultimate flex is pairing it with "swapped" monitors (you can get pretty decent audio or anything else into that CRT case behind the flat panel).
😂😂 damn i guess i ever thought of these terms out sides of the car community
Talks about sleepers. Shows a GNX in the thumbnail, and a Jensen Interceptor in the vid. Sleeper? Those two?!
Yeah, to the untrained eye its just "another" regal lol.
The GNX, yes, non car people won't know how brutal they are and assume it's just another boring Buick that looks and goes like a brick, but the Jensen Interceptor has always been a unique-looking, hand-built, rare V8 grand tourer. Very odd choice, except if "I don't know WTF that car was" = "sleeper", somehow.
@@j.moneyfilms if you can identify a Buick Regal, you know what the GNX is.
@@ImInLoveWithBullaMy father has a story of getting drugged by GNX in his foxbody mustang when they first came out, he thought it was a regal until it finally caught up and passed him lol

I get Sleeper build Comps. A lot or people just don't want there computer looking like a Star Trek Warp Core.
0:29 I swear I've seen that car at my local cars and coffee before
There's a dude in my town with a Geo Metro . . . that's LS swapped. Idk how he did it but that wasn't enough. So he boosted the fucking thing. If there is a car that absolutely defines "sleeper"? It's that monstrosity. He named it "I'll be by yesterday".
I once saw a guy with a Suzuki Swift that made over 300 hp from the original 1.3, but with twin turbos and nitrous.
In Australia, we have had the perms 'povo/pov pack', 'taxi pack' and 'fleet spec' for years, any low spec car with no or limited options. back in the day when we made cars locally, any Holden or Aussie Ford with no or limited options that ran on LPG/autogas/propane was usually called one of the names I mentioned earlier.
even now when one of my mates gets a low spec commodore or falcon I ask 'why'd you get the povo pack'
So glad to see a sleeper showcased as a beige box. My sleeper is made from a case that used to have a Pentium II machine. I'm talkin' it had a processor that went into a slot like RAM. it's not a LGA or PGA, it's a CPU slot that was in this thing. It's still got the floppy drive and the CD rom drive installed (neither are connected) to keep that old PC look. I could put stuff in the 5.25 bays if I wanted but everything is made with black plastic. I want a USB front panel that matches the 90s beige box build. The only RGB visible is on the IO shield and I keep it there bc I refuse to install manufacturer's bloatware just to turn off the colors.
Nice to see how much Car Culture has grown.
Hahahaha povo pack and pleb spec, i love those terms 😂
Bone stock has been around for a long time! I remember using it in the 90s!
I like how on the forums that a base model M3 is called a “civic M3” 😂
Clapped out for cars: Missing 3rd gear, rust hole in the footwell, wheels wobbling due to a worn bearing, creates a smokescreen wherever it goes
Clapped out for tech: Last year's iPhone getting an update.
Had no clue that PCs had sleeper builds. Looking to build a PC probably next year, and I finally found the aesthetic that I want to go for. I love the idea that I am going to my old family PC to go run some game on ultra settings. Thanks, Bladed, for sharing that!
About the term "Clapped-out"
I believe it originates as a railroading term for an old, worn out locomotive that hasn't seen the maintenance it needs and is long overdue for a rebuild or even a full overhaul, and probably has more issues than a '93 civic owned by a 17 year old who thinks he's hot shit.
I have realised that I knew all of these terms but clapped out is really weird ngl. Why tf we calling shitty broken stuff clapped out?? It uses to mean straight up modded to high hell iirc.
I have never heard it used for any meaning other than worn out.
nope, never meant anything other than 'worn out'. I commented elsewhere on the etymology, but it's older than cars.
@@Josh_Quillan I've never heard it in this context?? Like literally never. I've heard it used in a "clapped out engine" kinda way cuz it had some decent speed. I've never heard it any other way til now.
@@badatsomerhing You heard people misusing it, basically. Not really your fault. Slang is hard.
When someone breaks into a house an see a gaming pc, they would probably steal that, but if they see an old office computer, nobody's gonna touch that

You can say for the sleeper computer it's more to protect it from thieves who want to break in your house and steal it. The thieves can see a Monster build and be like that's our target but having a sleeper look they don't want to steal it because they will say it doesn't look all that impressive
you made me feel nice with the sleeper pc compliment

Nowadays I use "clapped out" to describe trucks with 8"+ exhaust tips where that's almost exactly what they sound like
“Marquise Brownlee”😂
I thought "bone Stock " went hand in hand with "Souped up" especially back in the 40s and 50s where folks would take a Bone stock Model A and "soup" it up by tossing a bunch of "Beefy " components under the hood
“my car is a sleeper because it runs on hopes and dreams”

I kinda associate "Poverty Spec" as an aesthetic of necessity over indulgence so when I see plastic black fender, steelies or wheel cover, I see that as poverty spec aesthetics but I do unconsciously use it as a joke for being the lowest entry of things both in and outside the car community. For the origin of the term, it never had crossed my mind that it originated from people joking about lowest base model from luxury brands.

3:57 As someone who owns a bone stock 2009 Buick Lucerne full-size luxury land yacht, I can safely say that I plan to keep her that way forever. She's a great daily, and I don't feel like messing with her, these cars have enough common issues (mainly electrical, in fact, the blower motor just failed yesterday) as-is, and I have a feeling modding her won't make that any better
@Sambrown6426 a Buick Lucerne is no where near a land yacht its just a full size luxury car at 207 in long not like a 74 Electra for example which was 232 in or 19.33 ft long hell even compact American cars back in the day were over 200 in long like a Buick Skylark for ex was around 17 Ft long where as the later generations shrunk back to 181 in or 15 Ft long while the E80 gen of the Toyota Corolla was 168 in or 14 Ft long
@@courtneypuzzo2502 It's a land yacht compared to everything else I've driven, it's noticeably longer and wider than both of my parents' cars, which is a bit awkward for a first car, but a garage kept, well-maintained, 90,000-mile car from a family we know and trust for $3,500? I'd have been stupid to turn that down. The only unfortunate part is that it was an estate sale, the previous owner, who bought her new, passed away of old age in his 80's, and this sale was part of selling off his estate. I just wish I could've met the old man; we would've gotten along great
