This song came off the BEST Def Leppard album "High N Dry". It was their 2nd album and was released in 1981. The band is very young in this vid The drummer was 17 in this. The guitarists were the original duo. Pete Willis (founder of the band) the shorter one who was let go in 1982 because he was missing gigs and practice dealing with alcohol abuse. Steve Clark, of course, died from alcohol poisoning in 1991. This song was a huge breakthrough track for them. I love this whole album.

They came out in the late 70s. I first heard them in 1979 when I was 15. The drummer started when he was 15. This group defined a whole new generation. We just partied to it and the girls just let loose. AC/DC came just at the same time. Then welcome to the 80s. Cool was it.

One of the greatest rock and roll stories of all time, Rick Allen played what is called "traditional sticking" with his left hand, his snare hitting arm. After his accident he obviously was deeply depressed, languishing in a hospital bed for months, his band mates did not, would not, leave him behind; they could have easily found a dozen drummers to take his place, surely their record company tried to steer them in that direction, yet they would not relent, they could not just leave their friend behind, even as Rick was like "F all of this, I'm done!" They did not leave him behind...they then became one of the biggest rock bands of their era once they released Hysteria...that story always chokes me up a bit.

This was their first, debut, 1981 album. Their average age was about 18 (you mentioned the 12-year-old look 😂) but they already sounded like veterans. No wonder Def Leppard is so successful still nowadays. And yes, it was much before Rick Allen lost his arm in 1984

First off all, let me say it does my heart good to see you enjoy music that meant so much to me. I was 17 and in love. Had my first car. '65 Mustang. A senior at Denton High School and just happy to be alive. Definitely the most defining moments of my life. Def Lepard was 2nd only in popularity to Van Halen. And that is based on actual science. The concert T shirts in the halls at school said it all. The drawings on homemade book covers were these, and in this order. Van Halen, Def Lepard, AC/DC and OZZY. There were 2000 students in that school. And these bands, t shirts, drawings, and car audio evidence, showed how big Rock music was in the 1980s. I was there for it all. Great reactions guys.

I think the easiest way to understand them is that they had metal for the guys, but wrote love songs for the girls. And that’s how they became so popular.

This song goes into another killer instrumental track called "Switch 625", must listen to that, the radio stations sometimes would play this, then it fades into "625" on the vinyl, sometimes they'd end it at "Bringin..." but it's such a cool jam

Leppard....when they 1st started. That came out in 81.
I'm pretty sure that was their first hit that put them on the map.
"A track from Def Leppard's second album High 'n' Dry, "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" was written by their guitarists Steve Clark and Pete Willis along with lead singer Joe Elliott. It's a big rock ballad with a heartache theme: Elliott sings about a girl who won't let him into her heart. A mysterious and unconstrained creature she is, driving him wild with her laughin' eyes. He can't stop thinking about her, but she's draining him, and soon he'll have nothing left to give."

  • @DeAnne1233
    @DeAnne1233 Рік тому +7

Yes, that was it. He was screaming about teen angst, young love and heart break.
Not unlike Nirvana for my son’s generation.
Bands like these gave us an emotional release and understanding in commonalities.
They put lyrics and music to the thoughts of our hearts (desire, fear, pain, truth, sorrow, anger, etc).
We felt it, if it was applicable.
I wouldn’t have been able to put that emotion into my own words as a teenager but Joe made it acceptable to sing about at the top of our lungs.

I was 11 when this album dropped. 2 years later Pyromania was on my turntable and Joe Elliot was a poster on my wall.
They were heavily influenced by Led Zepplin yet understood how to mix their sound into a changing pop/rock culture.
There’s a great VH1 Behind The Music docu that perfectly explains the band and their sound.
Anthony Michael Hall plays Mutt Lange who tweaked their vocal style pushing them toward commercial production for the larger mtv audience.
If you can find it, please consider Reacting to it.

Being 57, I first heard this song when I was like 15. I was walking through Ala Moana shopping center in Waikiki and some store had a tv in the window playing this exact video. It was before MTV, so music videos were a rarity. I was mesmerized and knew I wanted to be a guitar player at that moment. It did not trigger anything about a relationship for me… just pure rock and roll.

I was 18 when this was released in 1981. Lucas was right when he said the guitar in the background sounded mystical. I would characterize it as a Gothic feel. I went to see them in concert a few years later, after Rick lost his arm. They were set up "in the round", which means the audience surrounded the stage. There was no backstage. It was an under the stage backstage and it rotated as they played. Not a bad seat in the house.

The guitarist with short curly hair is Pete Willis and he was with them for the albums "On Through the Night", and "High and Dry".
His time with the band came to an end because of alcohol abuse and stage freight.
Shortly after High and Dry was released, they released a second run of the album with a second version of "Bringing On the Heartbreak" which featured a synthesizer on the ifntro, prechoruses, and choruses.
They also releaased a second video for the song which featured their "new" guitarist, Phil Collen.
Not long after, they re-released "On Through the Night" with bonus track "Me and My Wine" which included Phil in the video as well.
Rick Allen in collaboration with D-Drum created his drum set which features special triggers on the pads and a series of pedals that he uses with his left foot in place of his missing left arm.
And can you believe he's actually done drum SOLOS?!
After the accident, they tried multiple times to leave the arm and at one point it got so bad that they had no choice but to remove even the small stub he had left.
The band agreed they wanted nothing to do with replacing him. Instead, they gave him the option of making that decision himself.

that year; Stroke by Billy Squier came out that year; Bringin’ on the Heartbreak by Def Leppard, came out that year; Stop Dragging My Heart Around by Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty came out that year; Working for the Weekend by Loverboy came out that year; Who’s Crying Now by Journey; Tom Sawyer by Rush; Keep on Loving You by REO Speedwagon; Woman by John Lennon.

I was 13 in 81. ( yes thumbnail is recent ) I can remember being shocked that the drummer was only four years older than me. I was just starting to win local talent contests / get parts in local theater. I identified with Rick going after what he wanted so young. Side Note...I am also a wheelchair user from birth. I was very happy for him. Some years later. When he didn't let life changes. ( in his case an accident ) Stop him. Life is change. It's a reality everyone deals with. BTW There is nothing inherently sad, or bad, about disability. Neither positive, or negative. It simply is. The experience of it. However. Is singular / an individual one. No two people experience anything in life. The same way. Other people's perceptions of someone's reality. Can engender fear, & prejudice. Becoming obstacles we need to push past. ( I am only speaking for me now ) Disability is as much a part of me. As brown hair. Blue eyes, a sarcastic wit, & my innate talent / ability to sing. A defining characteristic / bedrock of identity. All of which shapes my worldview. In part. Making me. ME. My wheelchair & crutches are tools. They grant freedom, independence, access. A rich life. I'm neither trapped. Nor sad. Wishing to be someone else, or trying ( futilely) to overcome an immutable, objective reality. I like who I am, & all of what has shaped her. Finally. ( me speaking again ) In this context to overcome. Suggests our very existence is wrong. Undesirable, & of no value. personal affront aside. The magnitude of fear driven bias it reveals is stunning. it is that bias many of us are banging up against / overcoming. Not disability. As long as there is life. There will be disability. ( anyone planning to age? ) It is a universal experience. Part of the natural order. Universal design is readily achievable. That requires facing human vulnerability / unpredictability. Ultimately ourselves, & the Shit happens nature of life. Erasing us. Via pity, devaluation, or separation. Dehumanization / othering. Is easier.

You should definitely visit more of the second and first album too. They were very young when they started. I think the youngest was 16 maybe 15 when they first got together. I was in high school when this came out. It was considered a "banger" even as a slow song. We played this whole album cruisin, chillin, or with our girls. Great times. No cameras, no social media. Just jams. Thanx for the reaction.

Pete Willis, who co-founded the band, is only 5 feet, 2 inches tall, so that makes him look 12. LOL. He was asked to leave the band due to his alcoholism; one drink, Rick Allen said, would completely change his personality. However, all of these guys were in their teens when this video was filmed. Rick Allen was 16 and joined the band when he was 15. NO band has shown this much talent so early in their careers.

I grew up in the middle of nowhere that could only get reception from one AM radio station and it definitely was not rock. So Def Leppard came into my life more around the days of Pyromania. They were easily my favorite rock band until the late 80s when Guns n Roses appeared and took the top spot. Anymore it’s hard to even fathom having to work so hard to get music. Driving at least 85 miles just to buy a new tape. The days of Night Tracks on TBS because the cable tv our little town just got didn’t have MTV.

Assuming this was filmed in 1981 and approximating their ages by birth year (ignoring months). They were all born between 1957 and 1963.
    Joe - Singer was 22 (1959)
Steve and Pete - Guitarists were 21 (1960)
    Rick - bassist was 21 (1960)
    Rick - drummer was 18 (1963)
Phil (not present) - Guitarist would have been 24 (1957) / he replaced Pete in 1982.
Vivian Campbell (not present) would have been 19 (1962) / he replaced Steve after his death in 1991. At the time of this video Vivian was likely in a band called Dio.

Ok ok, y'all are opening a huge worm hole with this band. Check out VH1 Behind The Music Def Leppard. Its very fun and sad at the same time. This song is from their 2nd album I think. While on a break touring on the 3rd album, the drummer Rick Allen was in a horrific car crash and lost his left arm. Rick Allen possibly invented the first electric drum kit and carried on. Guitarist Steve Clark (the one in white) passed away in 1991. He was somewhat underrated for his time, but he's appreciated now for being a solid rhythm guitarist. RIP Steve Clark

This video shows the band lineup that got the band off the ground. Joe Elliott is the lead vocalist, Rick Savage on bass, Rick Allen on drums, Steve Clark is the blonde on Guitar and Pete Willis is the dark haired guitarist. Pete was fired in 1982 for not showing up to practices because he had a drinking problem. Pete was a major song writing force for the band and was one of the founding members. He was replaced by Phil Collen who is in the band still today. Unfortunately, we lost Steve Clark in 1991 to drugs and alcohol at age 31. He was replaced by Vivian Campbell who is still in the band now. The current lineup of the band has been in place for 31 years!!! They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Fortunately, Pete Willis was included due to his significant contribution to the band.

High N Dry was released in 1981 so there was a transitional period from the late 70’s style to the 80’s. These guys are young, teens to early twenties. The original guitarists - Steve /drugClark (blonde) died in the mid-80’s after dealing with alcohol overdose in 91. So unfortunate because Def Lep had just peaked with Hysteria in 87 and they had so much ahead. Pete Willis (dark hair) left the band. He couldn’t hack the life of being in a band and was replaced by Phil Collen who is still with them today. Vivian Campbell eventually replaced Steve Clark and is still with them as well. Good reaction to a great tune that does emote so many feelings.

Def Leppard was my favorite band in high school - wore out Hysteria. Looking back now Def Leppard's fist couple of albums are my favorite. Def is not my favorite ban anymore that wore out after high school. Still good music though overall
