    In this video i show you how i finish up the framing on the pool deck 2018. I go into detail on how to install all the important metal support hangers and brackets. I use a 2 x 10 outside band with 2 x 8 joists for the framing. Some of the brackets and hangers i use are joist hangers, joist deck ties, adjustable joist hangers, hurricane ties, and beam to post hangers.

    Great Video. Except for setting the posts in dirt even though they are guaranteed against rot! Just please check your local building codes because I have had a bear of dealing with some...FYI in PA I had to dig a 36" deep by 12" wide hole...then get an inspection for the holes and I needed to pour 12" of concrete for the footings....then I could place the posts on that with dirt around.. (I chose to use cement )

    Thank you for the video, in this deck build what is the center on the girder beam .I'm trying to figure out where to put one in the plans I'm drawing up, I have had a 21' pool installed. I have been to your website and like your other deck build, I'm planning on building a 12'x20x8' can you help?

    So you don’t concrete your footings? Do you not have building codes where you live? Like how you have the deck attached with lag bolts instead of full load bearing on a post or beam.

    Great video series! Just out of curiosity, why don't you set the posts in concrete on top of the concrete footing instead of just replacing the original soil around the posts?

    • @Deckbuilding
      @Deckbuilding  6 років тому +3

      On some jobs i do use tubes and fill with concrete so the posts sits on them above grade. The way i show you in this video is much easier and less expensive than tubes. In the last 30 years I have done several hundred decks with the same type of footing. The posts are rated ground contact and are allowed to be in there ground backfilled with dirt. Treated lumber is usually guaranteed a lifetime from rot and insect damage.

    Craig....Great series. I am building in MN i noticed you are just putting your posts on the concrete in the hole. Never seen that, maybe do where i am and frost. Is there only the dirt packed in on top of the concrete and around the post what holds it in place?
    I have to used a strong tie product with anchor bolts

    • @Deckbuilding
      @Deckbuilding  4 роки тому

      The only way to anchor the deck down is to use pier footings with 12" building tubes and the concrete will be above the ground. You can then use the anchor bolt system. This method is way too difficult to get the post footings accurate to build the deck for most do it yourselfers. So i suggest to dig your footings 4ft deep and 12-14" wide and put 8" of concrete in the bottom and let cure overnight. If your posts don't exactly line up to where you need them, you have a few inches to adjust the post. So before you install the posts you need to brush on some tar 40" on the bottom half. Once your deck is all framed in and everything is square, level and plumb you can put another 12" of stiff mixed concrete on top of the footing and around the post. This slurry of concrete will be your anchor for each post hole. You can then fill and tamp the rest of the hole with the soil you removed earlier. I don't wait till the concrete cures, i fill the rest of the hole with the soil all at once. I would only do this anchoring method if i was getting it inspected. If the wind is strong enough to lift the deck out of the holes then the wind will be strong enough to tare the entire deck apart anyhow.

      Late reply but Craigs method is one of the 3/4 approved methods for post footings. Cement footer below frost, post on footer backfilled with soil and compacted. This provides great lateral stability once the soil is consolidated. Other methods are sono tubes and brackets above grade on the cement. Post inset in cement is an option. Helical piers are approved methods also. No digging and no cement. Your local inspector has the final say of what to do if a permit is required in your area. Hope this helps others reading.

    Would you be able to give me some guidance. I pretty much know what I want structurally I just want to know if it works I drew out a plan. I need to know little bit more about Girter spacing I can give you more detail later if you would be willing to help me. I’m no professional but based on what I’ve been learning I drew plan. I would like for you to look at it to give me an idea if you think it will work I used some of your ideas I’m just on certain about girter spacing.My drawling has a rough draft but it gives a pretty good idea of the framing that I came up with joist in the gutter supports my decks going to be a like you built but I’m coming out 9 feet over 24 pack 20 and then back to the pool at 12ft

    How do you put a winter cover on the pool if the deck floor goes flush under the pool edge? Would it be better to go over the pool edge in a northern climate?

    • @Deckbuilding
      @Deckbuilding  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Rachel, Happy Easter and thanks for watching. The next video ua-cam.com/video/wdoWNihqhr0/v-deo.html shows that the deck boards are held to under the pool cap but cut 1/2" way so the winter pool cover and cable slide right past. Ive seen pool decks above and over the pool cap and its not a good look.
