Just want to say thanks Craig. I'm not a carpenter. Im an old telephone man. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain things so a dummy like me can understand.
Nice work. I'm looking at doing the same thing but I think I want to put the deck above the pool rail as most pool rails aren't really load bearing for people to just step on every time they get in the pool. Keeping enough room for the winter pool cover access though makes scense.
Cool project, looks like good work. You might have said it and I missed it, but I was wondering why you use only dirt around the 4x4s after setting them onto the footers vs using concrete? Is the dirt sufficient to hold it in place since you made the footer? I would assume concrete around the posts would be better, but I could be way wrong about that. Just curious seems like a cheaper and better alternative if concrete cost can be saved.
This is almost exactly what our pool deck needs to look like. Our existing deck is about 6 feet off the ground. My husband doesn’t want to deal with it nor hire someone so I’m turning to you tube, and you, to learn how to do it myself. Did I mention I’m a hairstylist and have ZERO experience in building ANYTHING. Seems easy enough....I’m sure I’ll do fine. 😂 🥴
Craig - in the event I have to install a new liner, is it still possible to remove the pool caps with the decking so close to the pool? My pool appears to be the same as in your video, and the screws that hold the pool support caps are under the rim.
Hello. I am building my deck this weekend and it's going to be alot like this.. however my existing deck is lower than my pool unlike this video. I'm having trouble figuring out how to attack this..any ideas for me????
is there a difference between not putting posts in wet cement? Does it make it a floating deck or a non permanent structure is there some kind of reason for that? I've seen a lot of people not cement deck posts but just don't know what the reasoning for it is? if you could queue in and let me know I am just super curious. Please and Thanks, your video is awesome! Anyway you could list what supplies you used in the description?
On a deck or other pole structure you should always dig below the frost line and pour a concrete footing in the bottom of the hole. the posts set on top and the hole is back filled with the dirt removed earlier. If you backfill the post with concrete from below the frost line to the top it could grab the post above the frost line and move it up and down in a winter freeze. As for the the posts being sturdy, the frame ties all the posts together to keep the structure from moving side to side.
Okay, that is something I didn't consider. I live in Idaho so I do have to worry about hard winters, I am definently going to be using your method. One more question for you here Craig! What did your material cost look like when you built this project? I am using the lowes deck builder and its building it a little different than I want it too. Its estimating about $4000.00 (all redwood) does that sound right or a little high?
Hey CraigI've never installed posts on top of cured concrete footings before.Do you find that the deck is still just as solid as incasing the posts into concrete?
I am building a similar but smaller pool deck only. No tie on to existing. Could I use a 2x8 band and a 2x6 joists? I think using 2x8 all the way around is overkill
I love these videos! In you 1st video, way back when, you say in your plans that it's for a 24' pool. But in a comment to someone, you said it was a 27' pool. If it is a 24' pool, how would I modify for a 27' pool?
Why are you using nails instead of screws? Is there a good reason for this? I personally find it annoying when people use nails, and I have to fix something.
Yes, build it the way you see it in the video. For example, it will be way more annoying when the deck caves in because you used screws where nails should go. Screws are not meant to used for sheer strength when a nail is.
Hey Craig! Love your videos and your work! Looking to take on my pool deck project myself. I have a few questions but my first one is did you use that post hole digger/Bobcat to dig the holes right next to the pool also? That is really close so I didn't know if you dug those with a manual post hole digger.
Hi hows things going on your end well sence you never got back to me about building the deck for me I started on it myself lol one question you did use all 4x4 post right?
So no nails while framing a deck, just all construction lags? I'd love to see that video. And you are wrong about the nails shear strength and rusting. The nails used in this video are exterior ACQ and are approved to use with treated lumber.
He did not put any rock in the bottom. The problem with putting a post, even if it is treated, directly in the concrete is that it will wick moisture from the ground. If you were to put a few inches of drainage rock in the bottom you could put it directly in the concrete and would not have to worry about water. It is also a good idea to wrap the post where it meets the soil unless it is treated lumber that is meant to be in contact with the earth.
I here you say it in the video, but I still don't understand what do if my pool is not level? How can I still build the deck and it look someone correct around the pool?
Another way....If you use a beam, your joists can cantilever over the beam depending on the type of wood and size of joist. My city allows for up to 24 inches so for instance, you could put your posts about 18 inches away from the pool. Place your double 2x10 beams on top of them and then let your 2x8 or 2x10 joists cantilever to match up to the pool edge. You will need to also add blocking inbetween the joists.

That's my question also. Why pour the concrete and let it set with no post in it?
I noticed that, too. Concrete would be better.

Great video, love the aerial views.
Looking great, keep up the great content sir
Quick question. I noticed you don't fill the holes with concrete. Does code allow for this or do I have to fill the hole?
Why not cement the supports in as well as cementing beforehand?
Whats the recommended span between 6×6 posts with 2×12 skirt

How far away from pool legs should post be?
Question why not notch the back and side post
I love the video but I'm finding it tough to get the marks for the outer footings square. Do you have any advice?
any issues with rot on the 4x4 post in the ground?
Great video! keep up the great videos on above ground pool decks!

You can use the same plan for a 24ft or 27ft. the only measurement that may change slightly would be one side band going back to the pool.
Con toda esa maquinaria… Fácil xd 🙄🤪
What was the total cost for this ?
One more question. Did you say you used a 2x8 band against the existing deck, but then 2x10 on the back? Why the difference?
Great as always

Ground contact treated post.

Great video!! Great details! Would attaching the new deck to the existing deck be considered attaching the new deck to a dwelling?

I absolutely abhor using nails. I strictly use construction lags, they don't rust like nails, and have better shear strength and holding power.

Anyone ever see a lag bolt shear off?
Not but I've see the hole expand and them get loose.
I've watched alot of these videos, no every says how from the pool to put the 4x4?
The plans on his website state "minimum 1 inch" from pool"

Can anyone answer why the 4 x 4s are not concreted in
They wont float away. You only need to make sure they dont sink.
I understand they won’t float away but why not just sink them in concrete any way that way I know they won’t move out of plum
