Bushmills 10, 16 & 21 Year Irish Single Malt Whiskies Reviewed

  • Here we find out what gives these 3 Single Malt expressions of Bushmills their unique flavor profiles. All are made with 100% malted barley that is triple distilled in copper pot stills and none of these contain any grain whiskey. The 10 Year retails around $40-$45 and is created using a majority of 10-year-old ex-bourbon barrel matured Bushmills but also has some 10-year-old oloroso sherry cask matured Bushmills in the mix. The 16 Year retails for $100 and is made using roughly 16-year-old Ex-bourbon and Oloroso matured Bushmills that then goes into Port casks for 6-14 months. I say “roughly” since it’s all up to master blender, Helen Mulholland’s palate to decide when they’re ready to move into and from the finishing cask. The 21 Year retails for $250 and begins similarly as they use 19 to 21-year-old ex-bourbon and oloroso matured Bushmills that is then transferred into Madeira drums for a 2 to 2.5-year finish. Every year 9,000-34,000 bottles are released globally depending on how those Madeira casks hit their standards. All in all, each expression has a place and time and if you’re looking for a solid Irish whiskey, it’s hard to find a line that has consistency like Bushmills. I’m immediately following this video up with a review of the 400th Anniversary “Crystal Malt” Bushmills along with some whispered info of what’s on the horizon, on my Patreon channel www.patreon.com/liquorhound. Chris, Great to see your Bushmills review. We have a plant over in Coleraine, NI about 10 miles away from the distillery. We use the under $20 Red Bush for Hot Toddies in the winter. The Black Bush is a great drink for under $25. More flavor and depth than Jameson. But we do enjoy the Caskmates Stout at under $25. Have only tried a couple of these over $30 bottles.

    A tipp: If you want to truly measure the Oak. Drink some of your supply in the evening then put the empty glass aside without washing it. Then smell it with nose close over the glass the next morning. The Oak will be there, not in its glory but it will be free of the other aspects of the Whisky.

    Fantastic. The 10 year is so great for it's price. I always tasted some peach in the 10 year as well as everything you mentioned. Clontarf 10 or 12 year single malt is very similar to Bushmill's 10 in my opinion. Would be cool to do a side by side comparison of those.The 16 year is an absolute treasure. I almost tasted plum. The depth of fruity flavor is so remarkable and endlessly drinkable. Everything you said about the 21 year is spot on, and i can't add anything there. Cheers.

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  3 роки тому +2

      Well unlike Single Malt Scotch that is normally double distilled and is always made entirely of malted barley, most Irish whiskies triple distill and use malted and unmalted barley. But in the case of Bushmills, they do use 100% malted barley, so other than the 1 extra distillation, it's about as close to a typical Speyside single malt as you will probably get. For a beginner, you might as well start at the 10 year and taste your way up. Thanks for watching and cheers!

    Thanks for your excellent and informative video.
    Recently received a bottle of Bushmills 16 and just love the stuff, think it is outstanding, so complex and flavoursome.
    The Bush 10 is great at that price point also.
    Your video would not necessarily make me think the 21 is worth the outlay? Can you recommend any other whiskies at that price point that you would prefer? Many thanks.

      If you still didnt try 21yo after year time i recommend you tru sample first. As im Bushmils lover, 16yo is my favourite. Wife bought 21yo for my birthday and...its bit dissapoited me. Looks like not my taste/palette. 16yo Port cask is better for me than 21yo Madeira finish. As a wine i preffer Madeira but as a whisky finish its not works for me. 🤷‍♂️. What about your opinion? just one thing I wanna touch on, maybe you'll have a thought about it. But, you said that "all single malt means is that every drop was distilled from one single distillery".. yes .. but I've heard people say that to define single malt, but so often that explanation is never concluded with "and it is 100% from malted barley.. or at least "100% malted". Because wouldn't single malt have to mean 100% malted?

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  3 роки тому

      Yes true. I guess I was just going for the simple and quick explanation versus the full definition. Sorry about that and cheers!

    May I ask, im very concerned about why the 16 looks darker than the 21. Might you know? oh and which one do you find more delicious .. the 16 or 21. Thanks LH!

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  3 роки тому +2

      My guess is that most likely the 21 uses more ex-bourbon barrel matured whiskey than the 16. Those older ex-bourbon barrel matured Irish whiskeys can reap a lot of tropical fruit character, and I suspect they were leaning on those more than the sherry casks. The 16' blend probably let's the port and sherry matured whiskies dominate the ex-bourbon ones, since they haven't matured enough to lend a lot. As for my favorite... I like them both but for different reasons. The 16's bolder dried/stone fruits and pipe tobacco is fantastic and the 21's richness and elegance is only acquired through many years of maturation. Cheers!

    What a shame the abv is what it is. I simply can not respect Bushmills for doing it. It's 2019 not 1989. The price is simply out of the park for whiskey produced at 40%. It's disrespectful and rude to its customer base and I'll take my wallet elsewhere. 43% is the minimum for the 10 but for those prices the 16 and 21 need to be 46%. Nevertheless, that was a really excellent review. I would buy it but Bushmills, along with a whole lot of Irish whiskey, needs to improve its price and abv. Cheers Hound. WT
