Sherry Single Malt Whiskies 101 & Review

  • Heads up, this is a long video, but I tried to not make it overly complex and gear it more as an introduction to the sherried style of whisky. There's other "sherry bombs" out there (especially in the independent bottling segment), but these are a few official releases that most should have access to. Hopefully, there are some nuggets of information hidden throughout that will make up for the length.
    I reviewed a Glendronich 15 year ($80-$90), 18 year ($120-$130) & Cask Strength~Batch 3 ($60-$70) as well as a 2006 release of Macallan 12 year ($45-$65) & a 2012 release of their 18 year ($185-$240), Aberlour A'bunadh (Batches 45 & 50 - $70-$100), Balvenie 15 Year Single Barrel Sherry Cask #4443 ($100-$125) & finally Bowmore's "The Devil's Cask" 3rd Edition ($100-$250).
    The Nosing segment begins at the 12:15 mark.
    The Tasting segment begins at the 21:12 mark
    As of 03-01-2016, my current bottle count stands at over 2,200 bottles. I am a Certified Specialist of Spirits and have also been certified by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). I've been actively collecting for the last two decades and what started as a small basic home bar has transformed (with the help and understanding of my wonderful wife) into what I think is a pretty nice collection. Thank you for watching and sharing in my passion.
    Cheers!

    Thank you for a very good review! Two of my absolute favorites are Glendronach 18 Allardice and Macallan 12 Sherry Oak. The latter is available in both 40% and 43% in Europe of which I prefer the stronger version. In my opinion the Macallan is more balanced than the Glendronach. We pay everything from 75EUR and up for the Macallan 12 Sherry Oak here in Germany so you are fortunate to only pay around 40USD!

    That Balvenie 15 I will be getting for some birthday in the near future. The second fill sounds even better to me due to not liking stronger sherry influence. Wow that Balvenie 15 sounds so good! As an amateur that can't wait to try better and better scotches, as I've only had the lower quality scotches so far, reviews like this are very useful and appreciated!

    Minor correction. The Glendronach 18 is not discontinued. The 15 is, but only for 3 years. They are not going to "no age statement"; the discontinuation of the 15 was just to give them time for the 2002 stocks to come to maturity, so they aren't having to backfill with the 1996 and earlier stocks.

      If you have a Glendroach 15 Revival which was bottled in 2015, you have an 18 year old whiskey, and it is intense and amazing. Glendronach mothballed its distillery from 1996 through 2002. So any Revival 15 you buy (before the 2018 rerelease) was casked in 1996. There's a reason why the later Revivals taste mature and intense. You have a 17 or 18 year old whiskey which has a 15 year old label. This applies to the 18 Allardice. If you buy a Allardice 18 which was bottled in 2016, you have a 20-21 year old whisky since it was casked in 1996 or before.

    Great video. I just bought the Aberlour A'bunadh and what a wonderful interesting scotch. Definitely needs water. Glendronachs are great and undervalued, they match up to Macallan which are overpriced. I have the Balvenie 15 single barrel sherry cask and I ordered another after watching your video. You are right, they are spicy and need to settle down. Keep up the videos.

    I love Mac 18 but if the price hadn't jumped so high in the last two years I may have never tried the Balvenie Sherry cask or Glendronach revival. both were finalists in my whisky of the year ballots. Macallan 12 has gone a bit soft in my opinion. I opened a recent bottling and feel like some of the spice had been punched out that bottles featured 5 to 10 years ago. Both the Bowmore Devils cask and Darkest really needed time to open up. Darkest 15yr was nearly under ink able on first pour but after some time in the bottle really turned out to be quite special. Aberlour is a cabinet staple here and 47 was the best of recent batches. Thanks for the great work. What's next on the block? Maybe it's time to break into Smooth Amblers catalog! They are on fire right now.

    Hi LiquorHound, Thanks for an excellent review. I'm making my way through the Balvenie at the moment and you are correct. The first fill is stunning. Some other good whisky in that sampling as well, but the Macallan 18 (from the good bottling years) is too expensive and the Bowmore, I think you agree, is just not worth it.

    The Bal 15 SBSC is one of my favorite SM's, a little over priced where I am but delicious.
    Glenfarclas 105 10 years and GF 15 are excellent Sherry bombs with big proofs. They are usually more reasonably priced compared to the MaCallan's and Balvenies.
    Benriach 12 Sherry Wood 46% ABV is a fantastic Sherry bomb as well and inexpensive.

      That's a tough one since many sherried whisky distillers occasionally have the sulfured cask, but that's not something they're trying for. you"ll just have to look for heavily sherried whiskies until one of them hits. As for Brandy de Jerez, I like the Lustau's and the Cardenal Mendoza brandy for the money. Cheers!

    A little point here Fino is a young sherry in a fresh cask, they get expensive because sherry industry has still a use in them, it's perfectly fine cask for developing many more batches of oloroso and others so they sure aren't perfectly happy to part with fino casks.

    • @visionRBE
      @visionRBE 4 роки тому

      You have no idea of what Fino is and how the sherry industry provides casks to the whisky industry. Fino is a non-oxidative sherry whereas Oloroso is oxidative, the age is not at all important here. And Fino, like other sherries, is never made in a fresh cask. Never, because they don't want any woody influence. Last but not least, the sherry casks that go into the whisky industry are specially made, freshly seasoned casks - these aren't used for the production of actual sherry. You might want to check an article I wrote about it: www.whiskynotes.be/2017/whisky-news/sherry-casks-in-the-whisky-industry/

    I know it's tough but what would your top 3 or 4 out of those would be? Personally own all of those except Mac 18; Bow DC 12; Bal Sherry 15 and those Abe Abundah(I own Batch 49).
    Want to own all of them but money you know. Macallan 18 at $250 USD that's crazy from Canadian standpoint. Had to chuckle when you said, "wouldn't want them to lower there quality any more on the 18 especially at that price point".

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  8 років тому

      +Foliage A - Excluding the pricy Mac 18, the cask 4443 of the Balvenie 15 would be first, the older Mac 12 would be second, Aberlour A'Bunadh a close third, and Glendronich Cask Strength would be fourth. The Bowmore Devil's Cask III would be somewhere in the middle of those, but it's so different so I didn't feel like bumping one off the list for it. Just be sure to gas the Bowmore since it doesn't oxidize as gracefully as I hoped (a wine preserver spray will work). Cheers!

    I have a 2013 bottled year of Glendronach 18 Unopened, Carefully observe the liquid, I saw a few small pieces of light brown stringy (around 2 mm long) sinking at the bottom of the spirit, when shaking up they move around in the spirit. My question: is there any thing wrong about the liquid ?. , is it error of filtration?, or sediment?. i do hope nothing wrong about my Gl.Dronach 18 that costed me $160. What is your thought on this ?.
    Thank you for your knowledge opinion , very informative .

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  5 років тому

      It's really hard for bacteria, mold or fungus to survive in a alcohol rich environment. I've heard of them surviving a bit in liqueurs where there's sugar for food and really low abv's, but in your case it's probably just sediment stringing together. I recommend filtering it out and keeping an eye on it. Cheers!

    The major high quality sherry whiskies left out here is Glengoyne 21/25 and Glenfarclas which I don't like as much. The Glengoyne 21 is right up there among the best value sherried whiskies with current discounted prices -- far less than a Macallan 18 and can easily compete. Aberlour 18 is also a fabulously balanced sherried dram... not a sherry bomb but a complex, creamy, well balanced mature dram. The Aberlour 18 only costs a few dollars more a bottle than A'Bunadh and it is much better balanced. This is one of your best videos.

    I am pretty new to the whiskey world , but my question is : Does it really matter if the color is darker or lighter ? Does it really impact the taste ? I would think not ... Let’s say I get two bottles of McCallan 12 , but one of the bottles is darker in color ..

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  5 років тому +1

      Yes, but there are a lot of variables. For example Scotch whisky allows E150a caramel coloring to be added. Not all of them use it, but many do. As for the brand you mentioned (Macallan), I can attest that the older/darker bottles were much more flavorful, but again there’s a slight catch. For sherried whiskies, the cask plays a big part. If it’s 1st fill (meaning the first fill of whisky in it since sherry), the impact of the sherry coming out of the staves will impart a lot of color and flavor. If it’s 2nd, 3rd or 4th fill, there won’t be as much sherry left in the staves to add those things and that’s usually when a little coloring might be added. Another lesser known thing that Macallan once used, pre-1990 when they made it illegal to add anything other than water and caramel coloring, was Paxarete. Paxarete (aka paxarette or pajarete) was basically the precursor to E150a and was basically a cooked down and condensed sherry. It definitely made them much darker and flavorful and it’s a big reason why those older Macallan tastes so much different than the current offerings. As for current Mac 12’s being different colors, just a few years ago (when Remy was the importer) the Mac 12’s were slightly darker and richer, so I think that helps narrow it down to the quality of the sherry casks. Cheers!

    I know what u mean about that unpleasant aroma/taste from Scotch. (Not necessarily sherry cask) I am a pure Bourbon drinker (neat), but I wanted to give the other side of the pond a try. I bought Glennfiddich 14 year Bourbon Barrel Aged Single Malt. I know, I kinda cheated with the Bourbon Barrel Aged, but I wanted to ensure a great scotch. I was so wrong. It had a very unpleasant aroma of bile/dare I say retch. Why is this so? It will be hard to for me to give another try. I loved bourbon instantaneously

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  8 років тому

      +Matt S - Well everyone's palate is different and I thought (like you) that that Glenfiddich 14 would be a good crossover malt. The bile note you mentioned has me wondering if it's a bad batch/bottle though. I've had that note a couple of times on bottles and I seem particularly sensitive to it. So when I've tasted the 14 year, that's not something I've noticed in it. You might want to try and return it to the retailer (and let them taste it if necessary). If they agree, they'll need to pull it and handle it with their distributor. Regardless, as a Bourbon lover as well, I can say that Single Malts cover a wide range of flavors and I'm positive there's some you'll love. I recommend going to a bar with a big malt section and have the most knowledgable bartender walk you through a few different Speyside or Highland ones (preferably at cask strength - so you can add your own water if necessary). Stay away from the smoky Islay whiskies for now. Cheers!

I mean Glennfiddich is the most award winning single malt scotch and it had even more of a bourbon expression to it (even though many scotches are already aged in former bourbon barrels). If anything I thought it would be that much better. Oh well live and learn. I will be tasting scotch before I buy a bottle from now on.

      +Calvin White - I haven't added one yet myself, since I still see them around quite frequently. Is it worthy of being in a collection... well it's the oldest they've released in the US (and it's not over-oaked), so if you can get it for around $125, I'd say it's probably worth adding. Cheers!

  • @Matiop9813
    @Matiop9813 8 років тому

    Hey, what can you recommend for people that are new to Whiskies?

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  8 років тому

      +Mathias B. - Are you new to all types of whiskies, or are you familiar with one and are wanting to try another (like coming from Bourbons into trying Scotch or Canadian whiskies into Bourbons)? If you're completely new to all types of whiskies, I'd probably recommend you sample some from each category at a bar to see which style peaks your interest. I'd suggest starting with a half pour of a Canadian whisky like Forty Creek, Lot 40, Whistle Pig 10 year or Masterson's Rye (previous two are US bottled, but sourced from Canada). Then a half pour of an Irish whisky like Redbreast 12, Teeling or Jameson's. Next try another half pour of a Bourbon like Eagle Rare, Four Roses Small Batch or jump into the deeper end with a Smooth Ambler or Blanton's (just be prepared to add water to the Smooth Ambler if it's cask strength). Finally, try a couple of half pours of a Single Malt Scotch like Macallan 12 year, Balvenie 12 year (15 year sherry oak if you can swing it), Glendronich 12 year (or 15 year if you can swing it) or Glenmorangie 10 year (or 18 year if you can swing it). And if you're still good and really adventurous, maybe you can try a peaty/smoky Islay Single Malt at the end like Ardbeg 10 year or Ardbeg Uigeadail (pronounced 'Oog-a-dal'). You should have a better idea of what you like and don't like from there. Just remember, if it's too hot for you, add some cool water (a drop or two at a time). I wish I could guide you better, but it all depends on what they have available. Good luck and cheers!

      +peter white - If you can, get a bottle of a wine preservation spray (like Private Preserve) from Amazon or a local wine shop. The DC III doesn't really oxidize very well, so I recommend gassing it from day one. Cheers!

      From what I understand, they do not use E150a coloring. And from the variance of colors on the Sherry 15's that I've personally seen, I'd say that's also an indicator of the non-use of coloring. Cheers!

      Thank you. There's so much info in this video I've watched it 3 times. I picked-up on your comment at the end about "so many great whiskies at $250." You should do a video on that; "high value scotches in the $200-$300 range and $400-$600 range" showing that you don't always need to spend 4 figures plus to obtain great scotches. That would be great videos. Most people have very little to go by when looking at scotches at the $200+ level thinking the more you spend the better the scotch? When in fact it can be a real hit and miss as you are enticed to spend more when you want to get more from your scotch purchases. And testing of such bottles are very limiting, so most times it's a blind purchase.
      Thanks again.

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  8 років тому +1

      Well, I'd tell you that you really never need to pay over $1000 for a great Scotch. Those that do are usually buying them for collectability and not drinkability. For many years the independent bottlers have been sellecting some great ones in the $200-$500 range (in the 90's they could be found for $100). I'd recommend finding the distilleries you enjoy and then buying single cask bottlings (preferably at cask strength) from independent bottlers like Signatory, A.D. Rattray, Berry's or Duncan Taylor. A few of my old standbys are Longmorn, Glenburgie, Bunnahabhain, Clynelish, and Linkwood. As for a video, I'd have difficulty shooting one since "single cask" releases are usually pretty limited (and regional specific) and I prefer to review bottlings that others have an opportunity to find. Cheers!

    • @VaryingViewpoint
      @VaryingViewpoint 8 років тому

      Thank you. Your explanation would still make for a great video to show everyone what great scotches are out there for reasonable prices compared to the "luxury" scotch market.
