Is Bespoke Always Best? OE vs. Aftermarket Tyres

OE, or original equipment (OEM) tyres are tyres which are developed with the tyre and vehicle manufacturer working together, to make a tyre that suits the new vehicle as perfectly as possible at time of launch.
But what happens when the tyres that came with your car has been replaced, but the new tyre isn't OE approved? Does fitting the new version of the tyre mean you lose out on performance somewhere, or does new always mean better?
To find out I use a BMW M2 Competition, whos OE tyre was the Michelin Pilot Super Sport which is BMW approved with a * marking, and put it up against the newer aftermarket version of the tyre, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S.
Which tire will come out on top? Watch the video to find out.

Measuring the weight of each tyre should be interesting for future comparison videos.
He usually does that already
Proper interesting, another video with piles of info that's well condensed and easy to take in. Other channels would have taken 45mins to explain all of this.
Thank you! I was worried about how long it was already, so that means a lot
@@tyrereviews Man 15 mins is not even long enough for a couple of cups of tea. Don't worry about the overall length when your rate of presenting info is this well adjusted; your audience is a bit more grown up than the youtube mainstream I'd imagine.
One thing to add is longevity. I got 20k miles out of the PSS and 30k miles on the PS4S over similar driving conditions with a F80 M3. I replaced the PS4S with the same tire not because the tread was gone but the compound had gotten hard after 3 years and grip levels had diminished. (I estimate I was within 6 months of the tread wearing out). Highly recommend the PS4S.
That's great info, thank you :) If you get some time, feel free to leave a review on www.tyrereviews.com !
@@tyrereviews Can you please talk (again, I know) to Michelin, that we beg them to bring the PS4S in the 18 inch sizes to the European markets? Thank you.
wow. go buy a fiesta as your car is wasted on you, if you get 12k from tyres with that car you drive like a granny.
Good to know the comparison, but if you're getting that many miles in an M3 you really aren't making use of the car.
@@paulken1919 he can drive his car however he likes it is his car... be kind.... lifes to short to be unkind...
I own an F10 M5 and have gone from Pzero to MPS4S having read the overwhelming support for the new tyre. It is excellent.
Glad you like it!
I start watching this channel a few years ago, vids are always very informative and nicely packed. But it also became kind of a routine to me. It's hard to explain. As seasons passes, vids switches from summer tyres to winter tyres on tracks with snow every where. And these shifts are following me along the way when i enter the differents seasons. I watch the winter test with a hot tea, a warm hoodie and it's kind of soothing. Then springs and summer comes and my habit changes, fresh drinks, fan running to cool me down. It's like a clock who give you from time to time a reminder of the season you're in.
I hope your tea is ready, all season coming soon :)
I fined it incredible how much detail you go through in these videos!! You truly do love tyres and understand every aspect of how they work. Exceptional 👍
Thank you :)
Just wanted to thank you for your excellent work with these videos! I recently bought a new-to me car and when the time for a new set of tires came, your videos were a game changer. I went with 4 Goodyear eagle F1 asymmetric 5's based on one of your recent ones and the difference from the P7's is night and day! Thanks for the effort mate, keep it up! 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Glad to help!
Fantastically informative review as always 👌🏼I’m looking forward to the upcoming reviews 👍🏼

Best tire reviews on youtube, by far.
Great video as always and very informative. I have put a set of Michelin PS4Ss on my 981 GT4, I've kept the Cup 2's that were previously on the car for track work. I can confirm the PS4Ss are great on the GT4 and I can now drive it in all our glorious UK weather conditions without worrying about anything that wet conditions can throw at you when using Cup 2s.
Clear explanation, interesting subject, image quality: video after video, the quality of this channel increases. impressive. Well done.
Thank you very much!
Thanks for a great review! I'm impressed how you're able to pick these tiny details between them
Glad it was helpful!
As a Gt86 owner I can certainly say that aftermarket is better than the oe tyre :))
😂😂
As a BRZ owner, I too can confirm this shocking statement
Prius owners don’t get the joke 😂
In fact, Prius owners don’t get many jokes at all 🧐
same as a BRZ owner, with the primacy hp price buy any tire set is just better lol😂

Clearly you didn’t either 🙈
Thanks for another brilliant review video! I'm really looking forward to the track tire comparison. I'd really appreciate a tire shoot out under these current european winter conditions (wet 5-10°C, no snow and ice). That would be absolute awesome!
Mate, these are brilliant videos. Well done to you. I stumbled across this channel yesterday, looking for new tyres for my Golf (decided on Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 5 thanks to your reviews), but am 15+ vids in now and loving your frank and objective analyses. I now know way more about tyres now that I ever thought I would.
Glad you like them!
Whoop, it’s coming up to winter. That’s where my interest is. Keep up the good work.
Another really great tyre review , lots of details that us petrol heads really want
Excellent video, as usual. Seeing a new upload from this channel is always a treat.
Aw, thank you!
I’ve had PSS on my car, now I tell paved them with PS4. Looked up values on different tests in different countries. The noise level is better, somewhat lower fuel consumption, bit better comfort, noticeable better grip in turns. The PSS, although the older and inferior tyre was available at a slightly higher price than the PS4 so it was an easy decision to make and am very happy with the decision.
The tyres have been driven only on public roads so far, no track yet.
Thanks for the great review, glad it confirmed my opinion too 😋
This is the video I’ve been waiting years for!!
I hope it doesn't disappoint!

I'll go as deep as I legally can ;)
Great review as always, just changed Oe Audi hankook tyres on my tts for Goodyear super sports. Let’s just say it’s a different car now with virtually no understeer. Your reviews really helped me make a decision on what to buy. Keep it up mate
Glad I could help :)
The King 👑 back at it nice work. I’m still looking after those Michelin pilot super sports on a white M2 Competition Due to lockdown it’s home and clean a lot more 😉 😁
Difficult to answer that question. OE tyres are always that compromise between price and best performance for that particular car model.
It's easy to find better tyres than the OE, but even easier to buy other tyres which doesn't add to the overall performance.
Really interested to see the track day review between cup and 888r.
Also, on my hill climb car I use the extreme VR2, would be interested to see a review on them against a 888r. Another great video with loads of info thanks.
You legend! I say that if one has manually adjustable suspension, don’t be afraid to deviate from OE tyres for newer off-the-shelf tyres. You can compensate handling differences by adjusting dampers and geo.
I got the sense the front end floatiness of the gitisport in particular were probably attributable to camber and caster settings at the front. It's a tyre that probably wants / needs a more aggressive front end setup.
And PLEASE, when you finally do do the trackday tyre test, don't forget to include the budget trackday tyres like Zestino Gredge, Federal 595 RS-R, Nankang NS-2R or Ar1, Yokohama AD08 RS etc... That would be massively interesting.
Anyway thanks for this awesome video, keep up the good work!
They're all on the list (apart from the Zestino, I'll look into that)
@@tyrereviews Thanks! Please try to include the Zestino in the test. They are super cheap trackday tyres and I wonder how they stack up against the competition.

Thank you for this interesting review.
On my BMW M3 E92 I just changed from Michelin PSS aftermarket to PSS OE and noticed a big improvement. It's still a great tyre, for the next change I will go for the PS4S.
@Faggot Rotten yes, my m235i has it's own version of PSS as well. All the PS4S' are back ordered here in socal so I just ordered OE PSS' Today. We'll see how this goes because I absolutely loved the PS4S'...
Thank your informative test! I replaced my Pirelli P-Zero tires to Michelin PS4S Wow what a difference! They are fantastic!
Did you find PS4S better in comfort and noise? And which P-Zero you had? Because they have a few of them.
@@shamschandani4380 I Had "normal" P-Zeros from year 2018. PS4S:s are from totally different planet! Grip level is superb! in all weather and surface. Specialy in wet. Noise level is to my ears quite similar, Comfort level is better.
Exactly my question, and almost exactly my car! (2017 OG M2) Appreciated!
I look forward to the track day tyre vid! I'm only in a Civic EP3 but I look to be doing some track days at Anglesey and Oulton and even some nurburgring work very soon.
Lovely car!
Very interesting, thanks a lot.
Makes me feel better too as I have just replaced three sets of tyres with PS4 👍
I have the PSS on my M140i, fingers crossed Michelin will make the PS4S in my size and available in the UK. Or I might go Goodyear Supersport!
Hi, that's a great video as usual, but I've got to bring up the tyre pressure issue again. Of course the standard recommended pressures will be right for the OE tyre, but there's absolutely no guarantee that they are going to be best for the PS4S. It's a completely different tyre. I really do think it would be well worth trying a few pressure variations to see if you can bring the very best out of tyres you test. It would be really interesting too.

I am glad you put the caveat that "your car may be different". My last Porsche, a 2007 Boxster S, after many replacement sets of the N spec PSS, I finally tried the P4S non N-spec. It was cheaper, and on paper, better in every way. However, I found the ride to actually be harsher, understeer went up, and steering sharpness decreased. I was shocked, especially as I expected the ride to be better, yet it was not. To be clear, it was the way the car transferred small bumps into the car, like going over a gap in the pavement that I really felt with the P4S, not over-all ride quality. It's replacement the 2015 Boxster S is still on its N-spec Pirelli rubber, and for it's job as a daily it works great, but when it is time, I will have to make the same leap of faith again and there is something to knowing how the N-spec will feel that gives comfort. The GT4 will likely always have its N-spec Cup2s...those tires are just incredible and fit the mission.
Nice pair of cars there :)
My 2016 Audi A3 came with Pirrelli run flats and shopping for tires is hard as i feel there must be better tires but reading reviews and watching videos the data seems all over the place. I like your recommendation for transparency with the changes in the OEM tires as that would make the choice alot easier
If there is someway you can test on the OE tyres.. Something like the Hyundai i30N was developed & came out with the Pirelli P-Zero's
But yet many owners have complained about those & have fitted the Michelin PS4S. Saying it makes a huge difference..
I'm sure there are other cars that also have OE spec tyres, but yet a different brand of tyre might be better...
Great video as always. Appreciate the effort that goes into making these..
The P Zero never performs too well it seems
Thank you sir! This is a question I've been wondering myself!
Glad to help!
This is stuff we need to know, good job!
Honestly, the Pirelli P Zero summer tires should have been in this comparison test. The Pirelli tires are OEM on so many high end sports cars and sedans. I would have loved to see the differences of Michelin vs Pirelli on this test.
Well done, as always. What you should really do is compare the much-hated Conti SportContact 3 that Michelin fitted to some M2's against the MPSS. I wonder how it would do.
Can't wait the for track test between the Cup 2, Trofeo R, r888r and the GTR3. I run a track day tyre all year round so will be interested if I keep the Cup 2 I currently have and love or go something difference especially if there is a significant price difference as they are not cheap to replace. I've learnt more from watching your videos than any other source of information keep it up.
Also maybe the nitto 555r2, love to see some straight line high hp (600whp+) dry grip testing with temperature and psi testing.
PSS: Road dry,wet / Track dry,wet....... all rounder avg. (in this context/comparison)
PS4S: Road dry/wet-comfort/performance, respectively/Track wet performance
GTR3: Track dry performance
Always brilliant reviews!!
One big thing is lots of manufacturers for ages used terrible tires from the factory. In the past 5? Ish years the manufacturers have finally started caring about tires
0:51 into the video and I am excited already!!!
😁
Tyre Reviews thanks for another informative video! Was hoping to see the MPSS against its replacement! I think overall - in UK weather - the PS4S is probably the one to have, but good to know that the MPSS is still a very good tyre.
Great work as usual Jon. I run a 15yr old Boxster and the two OE approved tyres from Pirelli and Bridgestone are now 20yr old technology and seemingly haven’t been updated, which seems ridiculous.
They'll be fun in the wet!
As ever a really interesting video. Well done 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
Cheers, with my PSS about to hit 2mm or less in areas I've been undecided to replace with PSS just on the rears as the fronts are good still. But PS4S seems to have the wet advantage, comfort and sound. Hope it doesn't make my M2 boring though, breaking traction is fun!
Brilliant video and review Jon 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
More clarity from the tire manufacturers would be wonderful. But what did I learn most from this video?! Get Cup 2's 😄
Great video! In my opinion, the oem marked tire is not automatically (even when the car gets freshly released with it) the "best" tire for the car. It is the tire, that makes the car behave like the manufacturer prefers, or intends it to do within the capabilities of that specific tire manufacturer. "Best" is too subjective for that i think, everybody has a different opinion on what is best. Maybe you prefer more comfort, or maybe you prefer pointier steering as the manufacturer... I have never had any issues with non oem marked ones, as long as i used quality tires. I mean i put AO winter tires on a small Mercedes SUV, and they are great. (4 winters now, absolute no complaints) I put non oem marked Michelin summer tires on the same car to replace the Pirelli MO ones, and i prefer how the car ddrives with these Michelins by far. (of course in this case it could just be that the Pirelli's felt bad as they were 4 years old, but the difference was extreme.)
Another fantastic video! Well done 👏 ✔
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for this, as I prefer older cars, with fewer electronic aids, but still want the part connecting the vehicle to the road to be the best it can be.
Great. You answered My question to you some 1,5 year ago 👍. Now you made yourself another video opportunity by comparing a oem ps4s with an aftermarket dito.
I might be slow but I'm thorough :D
That was great info, thanks. Happen to have an M2Comp so was wondering whether the P4S would help.
Glad I could help
Thank you. I have just gone through this with my Porsche. In the end, the OE tyres are not available so I went with Yokohama Advan Sport. Very grippy but not as comfortable. All things considered, a good compromise.
Thank you so much for this review!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for another great video!
I have been asking for this for a few times already, but I would like like to see/hear your view on tire aging. Maybe some tire manufacturer or reseller has a set of 5 old winter or sommer tires which can be comparet to a brand new tire on track and road. I know there are some rules that you should not buy an older tyre (5 years +) and use a tire older than 10 years - but I never saw someone test the effects on grip and daily driving or even track driving.
I love this idea and I've been trying to do it, but finding the tyres is tricky as generally stuff over 5 years old has had compound changes
This explains a lot. I think I read The fiesta ST came with PSS then has been updated to PS4 for the Performance Edition, which rides better........ Good work Sherlock!
Makes sense :)
Another great review.
thanks a lot that is exactly what I would like to know! I own an M2 competition and I am thinking about switching to PS4S, and I think I probably will after watching this video.
Let me know how you find them!
Yeah, I remember when I had the PSSs I had to drop the tire pressure to 2.0BAR instead of the recommended 2.3BAR (front axle). With the PS4 I can keep it at 2.1. I know it's just 0.1bar which is not even 1.5PSI, but the difference is noticeable.
Also on public streets where dust and small debris are not uncommon the PS4 (there is no S option in Europe for my Mazda 3MPS BK and I will not go 19" just for that) seems to be more consistent and less upset by any of these impurities.
Hey awesome video further cements the idea of running 4s over oem pss on my RS. One suggestion for the video is to add to the corner what tire you're talking about as it's harder to watch if you miss when you switch tires.
Thanks for the idea!
Would love to see a comparison video between Cup2 MO and Cup2* on a BMW M2. I am a car guy also a vehicle dynamic guy work in car manufacture. I really like all your videos, there are still many tyre myths that need to be answered, you are doing a great job explaining the black magic to the general public in detail and in style :)
Hi I haven't tried the cup 2 BMW but I have used the og cup 2 and N0 N1 K1 K2 and the M0. The M0 (mercedes) has very similar wet performance to the og cup 2. It might actually be even better than the og. The compound seems harder than the OG and the Ferrari and Porsche compounds. The side wall also seems able to handle heavy weights/loads very slightly better than the tires designed for lighter cars like ferrari and Porsche. My Camaro weighs 3700lbs and wears 285-295 fronts and 305 rears. The M0 needs more time to get to perfect temperature than the other cup2s but also deals with heavy abuse better. This is not scientefic fact it's just my experience after running them in my car on street autocross and track. Hope this helps. We all wish for the day when manufacters should just straight up say what they did to make the oe tire.
I'd love to, the problem is no tyre company would support a "wrong" fitment like that, as it's too political for them.
I had something like that on a 320Cd M sport with 18" wheels.
Had Potenza RE050A with star * and put Conti Sport Contact 5P MO in the rear as a replacement.
The handling changed completely!! The car felt looser in the rear. Fun at low speeds but scary at high speeds.
I do not recommend
Love these videos, would love to see a PS4S star marked VS off the shelf for a car that comes with it standard
Coming soon!
The original delivered summer tires (forgot brand and model) had heavy saw tooth problems on my Golf VI with 118 kW. So I switched to Conti Sport Contacts and later to Premium Contacts.
Great in depth info.
Top job
Thank you
Love the ps4s but got the second set with nails, screws in it and after a half of life are noisey and split on inside. Handling for road tyre is amazing
I've not seen any unusual reports of punctures with the PS4S, that must be some bad luck :(
Video for suv still waiting!! Good job like always anyway!
Sorry, might be waiting a bit longer :(
I am actually surprised that the PSS* was a little bit faster than the 4S on the dry. Good video as always, it is a shame that no one does this kind of tests for motorcycle tyres, as OEM tyres are even more common on motorcycles I would say.
I would love to but I'd fall off and die
@@tyrereviews jaja, it would be interesting to have someone just for the motorcycle side like Ari Henning or Zach
Interestingly the M2 standard stock tyres is now coming with Michelin Pilot sport 4s in Australia. Great video btw
The new M3/4 has 4S too :)
I have a M135i rear drive. I still get the OEM Michelin Pilot Super Sports here in Australia and after 200,000kms have never used anything else. In fact we can’t get the PS4S in that size and that’s why I assume they keep brining in the PSS.
Been following this channel for a while now and love all the testing. Not sure if you've done this before but could you do a road legal dedicated track tyre comparison such as with the Toyo R888, Yokohoma Advan, and Dunlop DZ03

My Peugeot 208 came with Michelin Energy Savers (I think the non-Plus variant). I upgraded to Michelin CrossClimate+ all round two years back, partly because I wanted something better suited to a wide range of conditions, but also because I believed that tyre technology had come on in six years. They certainly didn't feel any worse in any particular aspect, and having that extra confidence in winter meant money well spent. The fact they're also rated much better in terms of rolling resistance (peculiar given the 208's focus on efficiency) is a bonus.
The Energy Saver VS CC in very cold or snow will be night and day, good choice!
I love the AD08R's on my R53 and get away with them year round. I've heard the new AD08RS isn't as good but would like to see you throw that into the track/all year round review you mentioned at the end
Great review as always
It's in the planning stage :)
This is a great one. I would have bought some RS if it wasn't for the negative press.
Great video contents!
Amazing review as always. I fitted the ps4s on my 340i which came with run flat potenza stock which were awful. The difference was night and day far more comfort launch control now works even after a remap and cheaper to buy!
Nice swap :)
Now on 4s on my seat leon cupra. Great tire for all year long.
In my Skoda VRS 245 Michelin PS4S They are superb!
One must be aware that sometimes manufacturers put the cheapest, i.e. least expensive tyres on the factory car. So, the OEM is not always the best. However, on some cars, the OE tyre is the best. So, it depends.
Interesting video with the results unsurprising. A newer version of a tyre would be expected to have measurable improvements over the predecessor. To my knowledge there are only minor differences between an oem marked tyre and a non marked version - these are usually in relation to dimensional tolerances and other minor parameters and not fundamental differences. I would be interested if you compared oem vs non oem versions of the same tyre. I expect that they would not show much difference under road driving conditions with the non oem tyre being 10% cheaper!
You make a good point that a tyre may be * marked, but 1. Which BMW was it star marked for and 2. Several years down the line whether the *ryness been updated (Like N1, N2...)
PS Ha! PS, how appropriate! I went with the Michelin PS4 S for my e61 M5 and I am very happy with them, but due to lockdown only a few hundred miles so far.
Thank you for the reviews. Keep em comin. Eg Michelin CrossClimate 2 vs Eurowinters in citycar size (to persuade non-believers that a one tyre solution will help save them from embarrassment when it snows this winter)
What an engine, and the touring is so cool! All season test coming next, sadly just the CC+
Thank you for all the time and effort you put into making this video and all the others in the channel.
In the upcoming all seasons test, IF it is available in the size for the car you will be using, can you include the new Nokian Seasonproof which was announced 5 days ago? (Nokian say only some sizes are being launched in autumn 2020 and the rest in 2021).
That would be really interesting, it looks much less capable in the snow than the weatherproof (which worked perfectly in the snow like Real Winter tyres), due to less aggressive grooves in it, but nokian says its gotten better by a small margin. But perhaps its too late, in germany the retailers are getting the first seasonproofs end of September, the test is surely already recorded and just not uploaded already..
Sadly I started the test back in Feb, so no season proof :( But I will be testing it for next spring :)
@@tyrereviews Super! Thank you.
What would be really interesting to learn is what performs better, the tire made for BMW, or the one made for Porsche, or that third version made for AMG?
Maybe one day, you can do that test comparison.
Please include the nankang ar-1 and Dunlop direzza in your track tyre test
i´d love to see crossclimate+ vs cc2 - - - any allseasons test in general.

Amazing video Jon, as always. Have you ever considered to do a video comparing a NORMAL car w/ oe tyres vs same car w/ uhp tyres? I mean... 150-200hp normal cars... I installed mps4 on my bmw 120d, wich comes standard with bridgestone potenza S001 runflatd. It has REALLY changed the way the car drives and it FEELS a lot faster. But.. is it only a feeling? Or is it really a lot faster on a track? I think that it will be VERY INTERESTING to know. Thanks and keep up with the amazing work!!
I'd really like to do a runflat vs non runflat test sometime!
Great video Jon, very good review.
Could you tell the Giti was a sticky 220 treadwear? Probably 100 treadwear less than the other 2?
I certainly would expect it to wear more like the Cup 2 than the 4S!
Excellent video as always. Now lets hear about all season tyres. No meat and no fish we say in German:-)
Few weeks away :D
Interesting to go over a single generational tire, I would be curious to see one for a 10 year old car, if you can find an oe tire for that car compared to premium offerings of today like the ps4s or the goodyear offerings and compare that just to see how much tires have improved.
Nice video - it would be nice if you could show the full information from the sidewall of the tyre - in particular the construction details of the carcass and tread plies
Noted!
12:17 Yes, please! Without knowing what has changed between the after-market tyre and the OE rated tyre, the OE specification smells like marketing rubbish. Surely it isn’t just marketing, but we don’t know until we know. Anxiously waiting to hear about what you can find out :-)
I went for the aftermarket 4S after the PSS on my '18 F82 wore out. Could not be happier with its all-around performance. I understand from my BMW dealer that the star marked 4S that is now OEM on the G8x wouldn't work on my F82 due to it being a bespoke tire for the new gen car and that I was better off getting the generic aftermarkets.
Glad you like them :)
M3 CS driver here. The car came with the PSS (configuration was locked, so even if the car was new I could not change anything). After a few "episodes" where the car just lost grip/control, I took the decision to change to Cup 2, because they are the only other tires that are "approved" and with "*" for the CS. More grip, but in wet&cold it's a handful to keep it on the road.
I might go with PS4S when the next change comes up.
I really loved the CS on Cup 2s. Dreamy car
