    It's taken over a year, but it's finally here. What are the differences between the Michelin Pilot Sport 4, Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2.
    The Pilot Sport 4 (MPS4 / PS4) and 4 S (MPS4S / PS4S) are the road tyres, with the 4 designed slightly more for comfort and the 4 S more suited to track work. The Cup 2 is the Michelin track day tyre and should be considered if you plan on doing a lot of track miles.
    Any questions please ask below :)

    You know someone really knows their stuff when they can thrash a car round a track AND provide nuanced feedback at the same time. These reviews must take a significant amount of planning and preparation and it shows.

      When he's giving his review he's not pushing too hard or doing his timed laps you can see a few mistakes like lift off in the wrong places or gear change mid corner. He's just doing that bit for the camera.

    Because of your previous reviews I went for the PS4 in 18" on our C4 Grand Picasso for the wet and braking performance. The other week during a sudden downpour on the motorway there was no hint of aquaplaning and they felt like I was driving on a dry road. The previous Bridgestones would have had us sliding into another lane like they once did before. Thanks and keep up the great reviews 👍

    I purchased the sport 4S on my 2016 Focus ST back in July and I'm happy with them for a daily driver. Coming off the Eagle F1 which had tighter grip for sure, they were just too loud and stiff for the commute back and forth from work, not to mention $60 more a tire. I've noticed that the Sport 4S makes allot of grinding noise without breaking loose. I've yet to try them on the track. Overall I'm happy with the ride quality and noise reduction they offer, even if it is at the sacrifice of the better steering and response the Eagle F1s had. Given the ride quality, it's no surprise there sports feel a tad slushly in the hard corners.

    I went from p zero’s to PS4S and I’m in love with how comfortable the PS4S feels when spirited driving compared to the pzero. Even on a regular drive of 50mph and below the tires still feel way better, which I was expected based off the many reviews. I’d definitely buy ps4s again

    • @a5oh410
      @a5oh410 Рік тому +1

      @@kleroooo I’ve had Pzero Nero and regular Pzero as far as road noise. I don’t really hear the PS4S as much as the Pzeros. Grip of the PS4S is so much better, and work well enough in the rain even at high speeds gradually. Only downside I would say is they’re expensive and wear out easily if you’re constantly giving them the beans lol. If you’re looking for all around great preforming and semi decent lasting tire I’d say the PS4S is a must. Obviously they’ll last longer depending on how you drive. The size I got 305 in the rear and 285 in the front all around PS4S

    • @kleroooo
      @kleroooo Рік тому

      @@a5oh410 Thank you! Finally, i got an important input for my choice. My rear is 285 wide, and earlier I had a PZero. Felt fine regarding noise and comfort. Now I have a Hankook S1EVO3, but the feeling is much worse(very wobbly and dull) and a lil bit harsher and noisier. (on the other hand it destroys the Pzero in rain. it's like I'm driving on a dry road, that perfect. The PZero was dangerously crap, never buy it again)
      I was hesitating between PS4 and PS4s. I didnt want even bumpier and noisier tires. But also did not want to have dull ones.... So what you wrote regarding PS4S and PZero in the same size...now it is a nobrainer that Ill buy the PS4S! THANK YOU!

      Cup2 still my preferred high performance road / track day tyre. I haven’t yet found anything else that does both so well. Many better track tyres, but they’re horrific on the road, noisy, harsh and poor in the wet. Conversely there are better road tyres but none that don’t melt on the track immediately! Cup2 is justifiably expensive!

    I have PS4s on my E46 330Ci on 18s and I absolutely love them. Fantastic tyres and would definitely buy again. Great in the dry, more than adequate in the wet. Drove from the south of England to Nurburgring in the summer, had a bit of newbie fun over three laps and drove back. Can’t really fault them!
    I actually struggle to rate them against Yoko A008s I have on my classic Mini on 10s, but I wouldn’t really expect to - both fantastic tyres in their own right.

      @@tyrereviews so question: PS4 for an AMG GLA45 driven by a fairly lazy motorcyclist. I love my comfort but the ability to clip a few apexes on the back roads is about my limit.
      And finally the killer question, the GLA45 like the whole of the GLC range scrubs its tyres on cold weather early morning getting it out of the garage and onto the road. It’s on the original (down to 3mm on the front) Continentals. Should I make the change to PS4 for a new pair on the fronts? If so will it stop the scrubbing or exacerbate it?

      I wanted to provide a bit more information to help regarding tire performance. A friend of mine and I do autocross. I have an F-Type (2017 BDE), and he has a 2017 Shelby 350 GT Mustang (a great track car). We both wore out our tires doing track day events and autocross, and he's been chasing my times when we both had Pilot Sport 4S's. He changed it up and got the Cup 2's and I found myself chasing him. Those tires really do make up the difference when it comes to track times. I loved the subjective review. Very well done.

    Thanks again for the putting your time and efforts in making these videos, although it's only 13 minutes long it takes weeks, even months to put this together.
    Two weeks ago I commented on another video of yours. I had my S2000 fitted with PS4S in 215/45 R17 and 245/40 R17 which I imported from the US. I'm used to PSS on my GT86 and thought this would be the best choice. However I ran into huge understeer and the back was to planted, it was no fun. So I sold the tires and ordered myself PS4's in experimental sizes: 225/45 R17 in the front and 235/45 R17 in the rear. These tire sizes lifted the car by +- 0.6mm due to the higher sidewall. But changing to the PS4 in these sizes made the balance so much better. It's much more neutral than before. But I was shocked by the grip the PS4 offered. I'm very picky om my tires and was pleasantly surprised. The tires were also half the price of the PS4S which I imported from the US. I was a bit doubtful on the PS4 as I tried it before on the GT86, and it gave me a faulty view as I combined them with 2 PSS tires. When I putted the PS4 on the front and the PSS on the rear I had massive understeer. If I reversed that and put the PS4 on the back I had huge oversteer. I think the PSS has a sidewall that is just a little bit more stiff and squared in comparison to the PS4. So people, if you try new tires always chose to replace all four tires!

      Sucks right? I was forced to get the 4 too at 225/40/18, had PSS on 4 at 3 different times and they were amazing, fantastic feedback.
      The 4 is super fast amazing lateral grip but much less road feedback compared to the PSS, if you're going through a round about real fast the PSS gives you much more precise control, the 4 you dont feel the tyres near as much.

    11:00 - our man truly loves his job! Cuddling up with the sticky tires for the outro. 🤗 ❤
    Seriously - thank you for all the time and work you put into these. I had a 10-yr amateur racing career, and I've had/built/calibrated a lot of performance cars (engine and chassis calibration are my specialties)...and I don't think I have your sensory perception for all the little behavioral changes by changing between tires that are all within ~1 second of one another.

    How you can tell he's a pro:
    -how calm and collected/controlled he stays even in the most demanding driving conditions & situations
    -how he sits; super stirdy & stuff, so there is no flex in his body messing with the cars movement.
    -how he can just talk while driving fairly quickly ➡️ this is not his first time doing this & he probably knows the track pretty good by now.

    THANKS FOR ANSWERING THIS MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION!
    The 4S is the one that makes the most sense for those that will track their cars occasionally. Its wet performance gives up nothing to the 4 and its dry performance gives up very little to the Cup 2 (most of it seems to be in the braking dept and not the handling itself) while the 4 does give up a lot.
    Me? I don't track anything except for the occasional straight 1/4 mile race ('Murica!). The 4 would be just fine for me, thank you.

      That's the way Continental wants to sell PremiumContact 6, but it seems an inferior sport tire when compared to the SportContact 5 specially in wet handling and wet traction. This might be related to changes in the Premiumcontact 6 compound to improve longevity. Sadly the bigger brother the SportContact 6 is not available in 18" sizes. So although the SportContact 5 is an older tire, it might be a better choice than the premiumcontact 6 for someone wanting a sport tire from continental in 18" size. Correct me if I'm wrong. Cheers.

    Very interesting indeed, having driven all of the tyres at some point but on a variety of cars it was hard to make absolute assessments. On the Boxster S, I found the standard 4 a little soft at the front and didn't give that incredible front end precision Porsche are known for. In fact I found the 4 slightly behind the N rated PS2 that had been on previously, they are quite a stiff tyre though!
    The PSS and PS4S are almost indistinguishable to me on an F80 M3 on track. They seem to do much of the same work. Its possible the PSS stays on form a tiny bit longer but hard to be precise about that one.
    The Cup2 are always good fun, but my experience is that they don't actually hold up that well on heavier cars, or cars with a lot of aero grip, as repeated track work has the cup2 almost eating its tyre walls to the point where you can't even read the text any more. The M3 in particular just liked chewing up cup2's.
    I'd be interested in knowing your thoughts of the cup2 vs the newer Dunlop Sport Maxx Race 2, as on track the dunlops seem to hold up significantly better, with better shoulder wear, high levels of grip throughout the session, and decent wet performance. I'd go as far as to say I believe them to now be the superior tyre (was always a cup2 fanboy before). I think Michelin are probably due an update of the cup2 as it's getting on a bit!

    • @tyrereviews
      @tyrereviews  6 років тому +5

      Amazing comment!
      Interestingly, if the 4 on the Boxster was N rated, it was probably more like the aftermarket 4 S than 4 due to the Porsche changes.
      I've done a PSS vs PS4S video and you're right it's very close, I would expect the PSS to hold on a little longer so your assumption should be correct.
      The good news is the Cup 2 has just been updated, it's called the Cup 2 R and should address some of the issues the Cup 2 has on heavier cars.
      I've not tested the Race 2 back to back but in isolation it's an amazing tyre! I'm planning a big test with them in early next year.

    • @1061shrink1061
      @1061shrink1061 6 років тому +1

      Another one i'll look forward to watching.
      The PS2's on the Porsche where N0 rated but at time of release there were no N rated PS4, so it was a standard retail tyre. It was a tad softer than the N0 rated PS2, but that's likely because that generation of PS2 wasn't hugely far off a PSS in road performance.
      I'm imminently purchasing a Clio Cup for dedicated track use, and the same questions come up about tyre choice. Cup2 looking like the best in that size at the moment.
      I may have missed it, but have you done any videos on the smaller end of the dedicated track tyre market? e.g. those being fitted to Caterhams, Radicals, Westfields and so on. The old R888R, ZZS, ZZR and AD048 debate? That's a topic I'd have lots to talk about ;)
      Keep up the great work, and if you're ever coming to knockhill again, say hi!

      Shrink1061 how are you finding the sport maxx race 2 in terms of comfort and noise relative to the Cup 2?

      Kurt Phillips having never had them in the same car back to back it’s very hard to be all that comparative. What I would say is that in 20 and 21” sizes on a 991.2 gt3 RS, they were perfectly comfortable
      On road and didn’t feel crashy. Given what they are capable of I’d say they are comfortable enough!

      Shrink1061 fair enough, thanks for the feedback! Do they take much warming up to get to their optimum grip level? One thing I've loved about Cup 2s is they don't take much at all for them to go from already impressive grip to their optimum level, even in cold (dry) weather.

    Incredible video and testing. I recently bought a set of PS4's for my Audi A3 8P and they are amazing. Perfect roadcar tyre as they provide a lot of stability and confidence, yet they are comfortable and subtle.

    What about trofeo r vs cup 2? Trofeos should be better

      It will happen next year, but probably against the new Cup 2 R which should match / beat the Trofeo R!

      Trofeo still sketchy as hell in anything but perfect dry, and they can be snatchy at the limit, where cup2 is a bit more progressive. I'd like to try more cars on the new Dunlop Race 2's as they impressed me highly when mounted to a GT3 RS. Almost no sidewall flex, much better shoulder wear, excellent grip and they aren't terrifying in the wet.
      Pirelli still lagging a big behind the game IMHO.

      And it would be great to see some asian tyres like ad08r or a052 and rs-3/4 in this comparison

    Must be fun, to trash tyres. What I'd do is buy cheap tyres and destroy them on track.
