What's the fastest track day tyre? What's the best track day semi slick tyre to use on the road and track? I take 3 very different track day tyres and put them on a BMW M2 to see which is best in the dry and wet. Video shot at MIRA and Cadwell Park.

Top content! Thumbs up!
I am very interested in Nankang AR1 vs Federal FZ201 vs Toyo R888R
nankang ns-2r (two compounds), toyo r1r, toyo r888r.
Maybe a budget trackday showdown with some different brands like not the internet favourites. Something like nankang ns2r, westlake sport rs, Achilles 123s, fedral rsrr along them lines now that would be interesting. Also maybe price to perfomance comparison to the big brands.
Absolutely more track tyre content please!
Yes lots more track tyre content, please do the full range from budget to full slick and include the trofeo r for comparison too
I find it amazing how big an effect tyres can have on a sports car. If you went into a dealer and bought an M2 on one set of tyres you might not be particularly impressed with it, but be blown away by it on another set. People don't understand this enough. Keep it up, great video
Agree tires make a massive difference, in fact it's the most effective performance mod, if you want to reduce the laptime
Couldn't have put it better myself :)
But then there is people that put an amazing tire on a really slow car which is just overkill
W S or if they can't afford a fast car due to insurance being extortionate then it makes said slow car the best it can be.
100%. I bought a C63s AMG wagon. It came from the dealer with Dunlop Sportmaxx RT2's, and I thought the car was rubbish. The ride was awful, it really struggled for traction, the front end just didn't want to turn, and I ended up putting the car on consignment. I got a call from the dealer saying that the car was sold on the condition that I put new tyres on it. I went for Michelin PS4S and the car was COMPLETELY different. I'd already allocated the money to other things and couldn't keep it, but the tyres made all the difference :(
Stunning. An excellent video for those of us, like me, who want a good track tyre that you can use on the road. Subscribed.
Thanks, appreciated :) Nice channel too btw, subbed
What's up, Tyre Reviews?! Ryan Little here. It's super cool to hear my music in your video. Much love.
Dude you've got all the tallent, love your stuff!
The M2 looks so good with these wheels.
I really liked the bronze wheels on it!
what brand are the wheels? Thanks
zitowheels.net/wheels/zf01/ Zito ZF01
I have tried almost every tire brand including those cheap ones, I couldn't forget how well balance and grippy a michelin tire was, how pointy a yokohama can be, and how durable a bridgestone can last. Recently I have changed a set of Giti S2 and I can assure you it is basically a cheaper version of Michelin PS4.
It saves my wallet and satisfaction by a big margin, I hope Giti is keeping their quality without increasing its' price.
Last but not least, I have to thank tyrereview's professional and honest review throughout the years, it is really helpful when we are looking for the better deals! Keep up the good work guys!
Always in for a suprise with your tire reviews, appreciate it!
Glad you enjoy them :)
You made it like child’s play reviewing and thinking while driving to get a good timing. Imagine you drive with full concentration!! My go to channel before i buy tyres. Thank you
Great video and +1 for full track day tyre test 👌
On it :)
Keep up the great work, used to rely on word of mouth or garage recommendations when sourcing new tyres, these reviews seem to be more honest and "real-world"!!
Glad you're finding the site useful :)
I have no intention of buying any of these tires, yet I'm still watching and finding it very interesting. Great work.
haha, thank you!
I'm here sitting in the basement eating my 5 dollar subway footlong sandwich watching fancy cars and fancy tires that I can't afford, take a sip of my mountain dew btw nice tires
Keep this going, very thorough testing, a unique channel.
Thank you :)
Hi, I've just found your channel, and watched a few of the reviews. They are great, lots of interesting tyre information, Thank you. Subscribed now, and looking forward to checking out the existing vids, and the new ones as they come out.
Thank you :)
First time viewer here, never knew a video about tires would be so interesting to watch. Subscribed!!
Thank you!
Holy shit! Subscribed! Looking forward to the next review.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Respect your hard work!!!
Thank you, appreciated :)
Love these reviews
Thanks :)
Great test! Hope your channel get all the suport
Thanks man, appreciated!
Great review. Subscribed!
Thank you :))
excellent reviews, my man!
Thank you
Excellent video, as always.
What is painfully obvious to me is that little by little over time there is no reason whatsoever not to opt for a 'second' brand.
I mean, who knew of Giti until recently? And now they not only throw the gauntlet, but pick it up as well. Well done.
Dope Vid, As usual 👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Congratz again in making these videos, it's really valuable to see someone test it which actually understands it well. I have test also many tires on my cars although it always comes at a cost :|
Thanks :) Glad you're enjoying them
Tyre Reviews I used to have to R888 in 215/45 R17 and 235/45R17 on my s2000. I just replaced them with 215/45R17 - 245/40R17 Michelin PS4S tires from the US to Belgium as they're only delivered in Europe from 17" onwards. However the rear is how much to planted and I have considerably understeer at turn in. I'm now considering replacing them with PS4 in 225/45R17 for the fronts and 235/45R17 on the rear. What do you think from your experience? I also run a gt86 on Michelin PSS in 215/45R17 and I like the oversteer behavior. So that's also what I'm checking in the S2000.
Tyre Reviews cfr my video on what style I like ua-cam.com/video/IXRIxAJ7iqY/v-deo.html me videos on the channel. Thanks for the advise!
Nice drifting :) Check out my last video regarding tyre widths, it should answer some of your questions :)
Subscribed and watched all your videos this evening.
Really enjoyed the rare proper technical detail, presentation and natural style!
Cheers Jonathan 👍🏻
I’d personally like to see some Porsche N rated versions of Pirelli and Michelin tested back to back. A little niche perhaps, but we’re all stuck on these N versions while under warranty!
Thank you :) That video is on the list, but it's proving tricky to get a tyre company to support!
Tyre Reviews
Yes, I can imagine!
It’s essentially Pirelli vs Goodyear vs Michelin and nobody want’s to come 3rd!
Btw, I’ve looked at Tyre Reviews site / ratings before. I’ve always been cautious of end used unqualified % scores though. (Especially after an FK452 purchase disaster)
It’s great that you’re properly explaining your findings and reasons in these videos.
I’m currently on P-Zero N1, which are a massive step on from N0!
Such progress, but I doubt I’ll ever experience that ‘Eureka’ moment again, as when I first drove a 130i on a set of PS2!
looking forward to the next video!
Me too :)
Tyre reviews, what psi did you run in each set of tires???? Because as you know a track tire like Trofeo R will respond very well in a car weighing similar to an M2 at between 28 and 33psi hot and a street tire will run 33-40psi hot. Heres the tricky part, if you've done any study at all on the r888 you will realise the sidewalls are quite soft, and this becomes worse once warm. Toyo actually recommend varying tire pressures as per the weight of the car and they are unusually high but work extremely well.
This is what I have found, 1400-1600kg car should run 36-42psi hot. Which takes about 2 laps off the life until they overheat and you need a cooldown lap, however the grip for the 5 laps before that are unreal.
Many track days ive heard people complain about their r888's and EVERY single one of them are running close to 30psi hot. I instantly facepalm and offer a suggestion, we pump them up and send them back out. A bmw z4 improved his time by 6 seconds, an r35 gtr by 3 seconds, and a Supra by 5 seconds on a 1min 40 lap circuit.
As soon as my car drops below 36psi you can safely knock 1.5 seconds off my lap time.
Nobody runs an r compound semi slick that high, but with r888 you need to, and its a big improvement.
I have turned people from hating the tire to now saying its the only thing they will run.
Im assuming you ran them too low, because anyone who says the toyo is noisy is obviously running them below 36psi. Its actually quieter than the trofeo R if you run the pressures correctly, tho i am still faster by 0.15 of a second on the trofeo r, having about 60 laps under my belt with the trofeo r and well over 100 with the r888.
Great information, thank you. In the interests of keeping things fair, we ran all three tyres at the same pressure, which I think was 35psi hot.
It would be really fair if you were running them at the manufacturers recommended pressure

Excellent video. Excellent review. Excellent content. Subscribed.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you :)
amazing video mate..,,subscribed
Thank you :)
Thank you for these super informative reviews! Just one question poped up in my mind, why didn't you use the new version of toyo - r888r?
It sadly wasn't available in the sizes we needed at time of purchasing tyres :( I'll do something with the R888 R in the future :)
Lovely video, keep doing good job :)
Thank you :)
Very interresting . Love Cadwell park .
Thank you
Us too!
this is an awesome video about tyre performance
Good video, but sad to see you only included 3 tyres. Would really have loved seeing a full track day tyre test with atleast the Cup 2 and AD08R in there aswell(and the new R888r). Now it almost comes off as a review of the GITI GTR3. Tough luck on the moody M2 spoiling your test evening, but you saved it pretty good. Liked and subbed, hoping for a full track tyre shootout!
I would have loved that too... which is why I'm going to have to do one next year :)
Wow, this is one of the or the only Giti tyre review in youtube I could find. Can you do more reviews on Giti control 288 Giti comfort and Giti SUV tyres? Really would love to learn how they work on normal everyday cars. Great reviews. Subscribed.
There's data on www.tyrereviews.co.uk
You're Videos Are Very Educational . Can't Wait For Next Videos . . . .
Glad you enjoy them :)
Will you do a 200 tw track day and auto cross tire test? So re71, rival 1.5s, kumho. 19 30 305. Rival just released that size.
Great video, very interested in the Gigi's now! Looking forward to the next video.
Thanks :)
Quality video 😀 subscribed
Thanks :))
I love almost all the wheels what wheels are they ? You recon they will look alright on a blue m235i ?
Interesting and in depth info
Thank you!
Interesting review, thanks for the effort. On the R888 and R888R, these are not liked in Australia for track days, they are sold as a semi slick but don't perform anywhere near the best semi slicks.
Have you compared Trofeo R vs Cup 2 R? We would like see which one is faster around track. You have very nice reviews.
Bronze alloys looked amazing!
Brilliant video mate, that Giti looks interesting, hope they do them in 18's...
I'm sure they will :)
What size do you need in 18”. I heard some more 17” and 18” planned for 2019 spring season
Thank you for the information. I’m very curious how tweaking tire pressures can change the characteristics of tires. For example: Would lowering pressure up front and raising pressure in the rear help fight understeer? Thanks again.
Working on it :)
I was lucky enough I experience the trofeo R at snetterton this week. They’d been freshly installed on a GT3 RS.
Previous experience was on cup 2.
Very impressed, better grip than standard cup2 and stayed on boil for a long time at high speeds and some hard braking. They were even quite good from cold (18 degree ambient).
Wouldn’t want to use them in any kind of wet though!
Sounds like you nailed the review, that sums them up really well
Brilliant video! Last time I drove Toyos they were a bit on the bad side on the wet. Pirelli seem to know what they´re doing. PS! Can´t wait for the next video! The showdown of MPS4S and MPS4. I have a feeling it´s gonna be close! Just ordered a new set of MPS4 last night btw.
Definitely going to be close!
Can´t wait! Fitting my new MPS4 tires in a few days. Should be a decent upgrade from the, in my opinion, the already awesome Pirelli Cinturato P7 tires that´s currently on my touring car. 2011 production tires. Bought them back in 2013. Can´t believe they´ve lasted for so long. And I drive a lot. I especially like their grip during rainy weather. They´re very, very good for wet driving. I´ve actully pushed them quite far on the wet as well as higher speeds on the dry. Now, the MPS4 tires should be good for going fast around bends in both wet and dry. I look forward to trying them out a great deal! Now, bring on the video of the showdown!! :)
Awesome content. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
how would you compare a trofeo R to a Dunlop dzo3g or a Yokohama Ao50 as a 15" for track only use?
Very good video!!!!!Nice guys!!!!
Thank you :)
Smashing watch!!! Always on point with your delivery of pieces and conclusions!
Thank you so much!
Good test!!
Glad you enjoyed it :)
One of my favourite tracks !
Mine too!!
Awesome video dude! Not many youtube channels that review car tyres in an unbiased way, using both subjective and objective data. Keep up the good work!
Thank you :) Really appreciated!
Interesting video! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Can't wait for the next vid ! (4 vs 4S etc)
Also interested to see this GTR3 against those too.
Fingers crossed for the Giti in my sizes :D
I'm so excited to finally film the Michelin video! I hope I can do it justice.
Thanks for the test! What was ambient temp at the track that day (approx?)
I think ambient was around 20c
Could you please test the Federal RS-R, Federal RS-Pro, Syron Street Race, Banking NS-2R and compare to the Cup 2, AD08 RS or some other Semi-Slicks/UHP tires in size 225/45/17? Greetings...
Would love to see Cup 2 vs Trofeo and Giti vs 4s. Keep up the amazing videos!
I have Cup 2 vs 4s coming very soon!
Love this @TyreReviews!
I know that this is about tires but I would also be interested to hear your opinions on the M2 in general as a fast-road/daily & trackday car. Cheers
I thought the current M2 was a little disappointing, it didn't feel special, but I image the new CP will be much better as it has the proper engine!
I have only test-driven an M2 (with DCT) on the road, where it felt a little inert and - at road speeds - a little less engaging than my Mk7 Fiesta ST... My next car will be RWD, something good on track. M2 Competition is a candidate. Thanks for your reply, keep up the good work.
Just found out your channel and I loved it. got my sub man
Btw, can you tell me what those wheels are ? They are a beauty :D
Zito somethings :)
Thanks for you vids, that's not easy to find that kind of serious tyre test in the internet !
Could you also review tyres in smaller dimensions ?
I have to fit 17'' trackdays tyre on my GT86, there's not much choices available and I really don't know what to choose...
I want to keep my car fun without too much grip (bye bye PSCup2), but I don't want either a tyre that will overheat after 5 laps (Bye bye PS4, Eagle F1...).
Any thoughts ??? Yokohama AD08R maybe ?
AD08 is a good shout, R888R I need to test, Kumho V70A is great. I plan on doing more tests this year :)
Good video , i will try giti
Not available yet, and I'd suggest waiting for some more tests first.
What’s the manufacture date on those R888s there prob years old....
Less than a year old - www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/Pirelli-P-Zero-Trofeo-R-vs-Toyo-R888-vs-Giti-GitiSport-GTR3.htm
Wonderful, real expert! You need a bigger production crew to have a massive test! Although I have to say the production quality has come a looooooooooong way! Fantastic!
Thank you :)
Late to the party here, but having run R888s and assorted 200tw rubber (Old Dunlop Z1s, Nitto NT05, and currently Falken RT615K+) I always felt like they were close to the same in one-lap absolute pace. The Toyos put up with heat a little better in longer driving sessions, but sacrifice a lot of road comfort to do so (which is whatever because that's not what they're made for).
Better late than never :)
Great video and as per usual so informative👍🏼 keep up the amazing work😁
Thank you :)
I've been selling Giti tires the last year or two. Very good tires for the money price is right. The car tire ride great. I've also had amazing results with Thunderer at half the price of a sumitomo. The thunderer ride is amazing in 235 40 18s.
another excellent video! Now i'm really interested in the GitiSport GTR3, should I put it on my GT3 when it's available?
I'd wait for it to be featured in another test first!
www.yourstore24.de has 4 sizes available for sales.
Good test. I was just missing two tires there in this comparison - Michelin's Cup 2s and Federal's 595RS-RRs as a budget option.
The next one will have them all in :)
What about the Yokohama Advan? I'm quite please about my AD08R's on a 2.5 Focus ST.
I had the Federal 595RSR and it was a great compromise occasional track day tyre on my every day car (tuned Mazda 3MPS which was terrible on my factory tyres on the track) - very good wear and wet performance was great. Front end grip was excellent and I could really push the front wheel drive as much as I dared without just understeering under power. Puncture resistance not so great but I would think its good value for the perfomance.
I'll add them to the list to test :)
Does it work to run a 4 S Pirelli in the front and a Trofeo in the rear.??
Why? :O
Definitely want to see more videos like this. Really interesting, well done!
I'd love to see the Yokohama AD08R in a test. It'd be interesting to compare it against the top UHP tyre, the GTR3 in this video & full track day semi slicks.
I understand the AD08R & the GTR3 to sit in the middle of UHP & track tyres so it'd be good to see if they're worth the extra money.
I currently drive an FN2 Type R on PS4's & they're a great tyre, but do overheat on track. It'd be good to see how tyres compare in that aspect too.
You might find this test interesting - www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2017-Track-Day-Tyre-Test.htm
Tyre Reviews Thanks. Yes I've seen this before. It was a surprise the AD08R was rated better than the R888R overall.
As I say I'd like to see you do a test similar to what I mentioned above. I really enjoy your reviews & prefer videos than reading something on the internet.
I also believe you to be impartial where as some of these tests I'm not sure they are.
I'll keep my eyes peeled.
Keep up the good work & thanks for the reply 👍
Definitely working on that for next year :) And I'll do the test blind so there's no bias at all.
Tyre Reviews lol Stevie Wonder style! 😎
That was a really good video, I'm super surprised about the Toyo. I thought that tire would do much better
ME too :(
WOW, very informative video!
All you guys need to sub. More recourses too this channel/type of content please.
Thanks man, appreciated :)
Help me out Jonathan, i'm trying to select track day tyres for my mk2 Focus RS (420bhp FWD). While i would love something like a Trofeo R, my better half would kill me if i go out and put a grand on tyres i only use for track driving lol. I used to run Conti SportContact 6's, but found out they don't hold up to proper track driving for long. Nankang NS2R? Federal RSRR? Yokohama AD08R? Toyo R888R? Size is also one thing i am wondering about. The RS runs a 235/35/19 as standard, but i thought about dropping down to a 18 on the track tyres, but would you go with a 235 or 225? Quite hard to find 235 18's apparently.
225/40 R18 is the matching swap from 19". I'd give the Nankang AR1 ago if you want ultimate pace on a budget, otherwise any of the others you mention would work.
Don't use the Contis on track, they like to melt.
I'm actually running the Gitis on my M3 daily at the moment and am still impressed considering how well they did on track.
Tyre Reviews Thanks for the reply mate. Have you heard any issues with putting really agressive tyres on a road car? Was looking at AR1's too, but several forums talked about possible oil starvation of the engine and broken cv joints when running something that grippy.
Thankyou, more please and can you include target hot pressures for optimal performance?
We ran everything at 30/32 to be fair. I want to make a tyre pressure tuning video in the future.
Thanks for reply. Was 30/32 starting pressure or hot adjusted to..?
would be nice to see mpsc2, mps4s, ad08r and trofeo r in the next test. Perhaps even a road based tyre like mpss or mps4 . thanks for this video please keep up the great work. subscribed
MPS4 vs MPS4S vs Cup 2 live tomorrow :)
Tyre Reviews aweesome. Keep up the amazing work.
have you any experience of Dunlop dzo3g? T race a humble MGB (220hp/980 kg)band have used these for several years but want to know if there is something newer to try (tiny 205/50 15) some competitors use yoko a050 & a052 but is there a hidden jem anywhere?
I've not sadly, sorry
How do the Michelin 4s compare to Toyo and giti
Not sure yet. I imagine better all round tyre but a little softer steering
I thought Michelin 4s was the best so surprised it's not in the test
The 4S is a UHP tyre, this was a track day tyre test. The Michelin tyre is the Cup 2, but that's not as fast as the Pirelli in the dry, hence using the Pirelli.
@@tyrereviews Cup 2 R's coming soon? :P
The R888R on my 285hp Mini were great. But the noise was awfull for daily driving. Can you do a 17" trackday tyre test? Because its a limited tyre size
I love the noise!
If the noise is loud with r888 your tire pressures are too low. This is also costing you lap times. Increase your tire pressure. R888 are silent
can you do tyres for cars that has over 500hp/500torque, I have a FBO tuned M4 the super sport just wont grip no more the first two gear...
Any tyre will struggle, cup 2 is probably the best bet for dry road.
What’s your take on the extreme contact 6 by continental? I’ll look at all your vids to see if you have a review on them.
We don't have that tyre in europe sadly, sorry
I run the continental extreme on my Subaru wrx . I live in the north of Boston area(NH). They are fantastic in the rain and snow and very good for dry handling. My wrx came brand new with summer performance Dunlop’s. In the dry there isn’t enough difference to tell in performance between the two.
Intersting comparison, I would not rely on a Giti tire to fit my car before but after looking to the video, I could envisage it. Need to look to other performances like "wear" to make the good choice. Impressive to see how budget tire can sometimes get close to premium brands...
I'd like to test it more to be sure, but it looks like an interesting choice.
Thanks for the reviews... have you previously rated tires for AWD cars? I’m a subaru fan and always wondered what tires could conquer the track and be good on my daily driver.
I've not done an AWD tyre test, but the trend you see in other tests should apply for AWD cars too!
Do you think the same would go for tire width or do you think the AWD would change that up at all?
There will be differences with every car setup, but overall trends when it comes to things like grip should be in the same direction :)
Hello
Please make a review for a normal car tires that all can buy like Corsa, Astra , civic, c4 with r15 or r16 summer tires ... Thank you
Try this :) ua-cam.com/video/QseDx-aBaK4/v-deo.html
Are these rims standard on M2 or are they aftermarket? I love the design
Zito ZF01
What ya think about proxes sport for m3 2015
See the M2 video, the Toyo is included
Would of been great if you could of done a comparison of the m2’s standard super sports.
Agreed, they're still one of my fav tyres.
how do the Giti's compare to for example the pilot sport 4 tires? More grip but noisier and less comfortable and worse wear?
No one has done that test yet sadly, I'll be trying to do it next year.
I'd love to see this awesome test done again in 2020 or 2021. Sport Cup 2(R?) vs R888R vs Nankang AR-1?
Something is coming )
@@tyrereviews fantastic!
Thank you for a great video, as always. It would be good to mention what alignment the tyres were tested with. Assuming it was stock on the BMW, with zero camber in the front, no surprise you couldn’t get confidence with R888s. Due to tyre construction R888 likes significant negative camber, at least -2.5 or more. And that’s what most serious track guys would run anyways. Trofeo Rs are frequently fitted on super cars, which tend to have have zero camber due to their intended regular road use. With a serious track set-up of a more common track car, most people (think old Bimmer owners) would probably be able to get much closer results between R888 and the Pirellis, at half the cost. Would be really interesting if you make a test on a track-ready car with front camber alignment.
It's a good point, but sadly in the scope of this sort of test customising the cars setup for each tyre is impossible, so we usually run stock for fairness, as that's how a lot of people will run.
I plan to make another video where we go into setup adjustment etc, it will be complicated to make though so won't be for a while
Tyre Reviews Fair enough! Looking forward to that video. Sadly there are not many decent and affordable alternatives to R888/R out there 🤷🏻♂️
Not a fan of the Nankang AR1 or Kumho V70A
What are the wheels you were using? I've been looking for a good y-spoke wheel and really like the one you are using.

versus Yokohama AD08R please

I really need to do the full track day tyre test :)
Tyre Reviews would love to see the Giti Vs Cup 2's
Federal 595RS-R would also be nice to see
vs nankang ns2r
So an M2 throws a code on half tank on a track? My 135i throws a code at 1/4 tank and I find that super annoying already
Very informative video this & although I have an R53 track car that has NS2-R trackday tyres on it the GTR3’s look interesting as a tyre that could go on my A45 AMG as I daily it & wouldn’t mind trying it on track. The ‘go to’ tyre on that is the PS4 so would be very interested in a direct comparison to that. Maybe do a comparison using a hyper-hatch next time like an A45, RS3 or RS
Thanks. The GTR3 should feel sharper than the PS4, but the wet performance is yet to be proven
Tyre Reviews if it holds its own that might just sell it for me
Would like to see the Giti Sport GTR3 vs PS4s, Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport, Continental sportcontact 6!
Make sure you subscribe then ;)
Great comparison! Really surprised by the Giti
You and me both!
Tyre Reviews Ever heard of CEAT tyres before? Used to be Italian, now Indian, and we’re about to do some durability testing for them in Australia. Their benchmark tyre is the PS4!! This will be interesting
I have heard of them, never used them. Let me know how they get on!
