USA needs more of these smaller EVs.
If only that political guy built a model 2.
You can blame CAFE regulations for that.
So you’re advocating destroying your own car industry 😂
@@paulb1951 Yes, if the American brands won't build what we need.
@@paulb1951 China invited Tesla into their country without a joint venture requirement and now they are beating Tesla in China and the rest of the world. It's about time the US learned from China on how to improve oneself instead of trying to keep others from improving.
Dolphin owner from France here! I love your video. French UA-camrs reviewed that car at least a year ago and BYD did some much improvements using OTA updates. Now, still hoping for better regen and route planner next ❤. When I got the car, it was right before EU started adding taxes on Chinese cars, so I got it for a bit less than 25k €, which, I believe is just the best car on the market for that price.
BYD owner feedback from Australia! Nice work on the quick review, Kyle. My experience of the car (same high spec model as Kyles).
- Fantastic value for money, given all the features and extras it has. Beats some of the non Tesla EVs even when they are double the price. Only AUD36-44k driveaway, no subsidy here in NSW, and no car tariffs in Australia (we have a free and open car market, so get acces to all the best car choices).
- Software overall is not quite as good as Tesla, but it does have Apple/Android wireless connectivity (since version 1.3 of the OTA). I use it mostly around town, no need to do route planning (but a third party app called ABRP is Apple compatible and does all this anyway if needed).
- I can charge at (most) Tesla Superchargers V3/V4 etc if needed, so no range anxiety. I get around 400-450km range. Non Tesla chargers are still fairly unreliable here.
- This is not a car you are going to race around in, or push hard (sorry Kyle). The day to day driving dynamics are really good (much better than my old ICE car) and can be tweaked. I have the steering in sport mode (more direct), but otherwise drive in normal mode as the sport mode is quite aggressive around town in terms of acceleration etc. I never have a problem with wheel spin, noting that the tires are not great and I will replace them in time (some markets sell the car with better tires). Open road long distance driving is great, especially with all the driver assistance.
- Early versions of the car had issues with ADACs (driving assistance/traffic sign recognition etc). This has now been fixed - no more bings and bongs, and can be turned off if not needed.
- Given the outside dimensions, interior space is amazing, especially for back seat passengers. Styling is a personal thing, but I love the interior (not bland/boring), and I don't mind the relatively standard exterior - less likely to be keyed by EV haters.
I have a Tesla Y and my wife has a BYD Dolphin, I regularly drive my friends BYD Atto 3 - I love my Tesla but the Dolphin is great little run around town car. The things that I love about the Tesla (mainly the minimalism and auto steer an UI for driving - 1 click cruise control etc) are things that my wife doesn't like or would never use. I am waiting for Tesla to build a smaller city car - would buy in a heart beat. The space in the Dolphin is amazing (coming from a Mazda CX-3) and once you turn off all the electronic 'aids' it is much easier to live with. Ideally the Dolphin was rear wheel drive but getting pretty picky...
40k drive away on the cheapest model mate
@@Sal3600 no it’s about 38 in Queensland matters on State obviously but they make the most sense to lease because of all the tax benefits
Put on some sport tires and tighten up the suspension, this car can race around town
Very happy with our Dolphin (Brisbane Aust) 13,000 klms and 9 months in and we are totally impressed. It’s high level of UI including speed and clarity of the camera system and infotainment setup plus the excellent seats, usable interior space & the host of ‘extras’ made it a winner over the really excellent MG4…
It's a great car. I bought mine in China last year for 130,000 RMB about $18,000 USD. Your review was right on. Living in big city of Guangzhou it's a fantastic car and fun to drive. Charges from 0 to 100% in little over an hour. 20-80% in 30 minutes. Just reached 18,000 KM/11,000 Mi. No issues or problems, good on the highway, a little noisy at speed, but a tire change might help that. I still have the original tires which are, again okay. I couldn't come close to the quality and performance for the same money in the USA.
no shit dude lol
我女儿坐我老婆的骑士版晕车,她坐我的C11啥事没有。
I won't complain about anything at that price
18000 dólares? No Brasil custa algo em torno de 34000 usd 😢😢
@@leonardoiankoska1965 In the Chinese market, automakers are engaged in a price war. From Tesla to Toyota, many automakers are selling cars at cost price.
Kyle, for the benefit of your US viewers I suggest you also mention that in Europe the prices for cars include VAT which is normally around 20% in most countries. So when you say it costs €28,000 including VAT, in dollars, MSRP would be $25,000 at an exchange rate of $1.08=1€.
But American tariffs change that massively. (Until BYD builds in Mexico, as they plan.)
@@bearcubdaycare Tariffs coming to Europe also.
Very good point.
@@bearcubdaycare BYD is relatively expensive in Europe compared to their pricing in China. That same car sells there starting at $13, 900. It will not pay a 100% duty like in the US and they are building a factory in Turkey with 0 duty.
@@bearcubdaycare BYD building in Mexico won't change anything.
I like that interior. Bright, fresh and not too serious. I think many have grown used to the sombre, dark insides pioneered by the German makers to denote they're 'serious'.
🤣
You can spec german cars to have other interior colours….
This just upsets me, US gov making noise about wanting to go EV, but it is doing everything it can to prevent us from getting small EV's, and the nonsense that everyone in the USA wants a big what ever is nuts.....remember the VW Beetle in the 50's and 60's
wr
Yup, I agree with you 100%
@@MarkTrain-hw2xt The Supreme Court ruling on Cheveron on takes most of power away from agencies imposing mandates. Couple this with Trump and EVs won’t be a thing in USA.🇺🇸. Ford ramping up ice powered trucks again.
probably something to do with not wanting the auto sector to be decimated by what is basically a Chinese gov company....then it would mean being dependent on a communist country for cars while it attacks Taiwan
Most Americans don't drive small vehicles. That market segment is less than 10% and shrinking. The best selling vehicles in the US are large SUVs or work pickup trucks such as the F-150, the RAM, etc
4:07 thank you for using the word " competitive " instead of " cheaply made "
The BYDs aren't cheaply made at all. The refinement that they lack is really just software related.
@@budawang77 software, final ride and handling tuning......
@@budawang77 Especially ADAS related. The infotainment works quite well.
Then he forgets to mention that China doesn't allow Japanese or Korean battery makers to compete in China's EV market (since 2015).
@@tooltalk And you forget to mention that Korean and Japanese battery makers only make NCM battery that are very expensive so Chinese aren't that much interested in them, so they have better battery makers like BYD and CATL to choose from. So Panasonic and LG Chem simply won't survive there, and btw these guys buy their battery materials mostly from China too.
I wanna see Kyle in the seagull
The throttle response is suppose to mimic a ICE vehicle. They say that in the Australian sales material. The throttle not trying to take your head off like our Tesla is a benefit imo.
I changed from a Mazda 3 to the Dolphin (Thailand, now 11 months, 25,000 km). I miss some of the «refinements» of Mazda, but this BYD is so good.
Wondering how this would work in US 😊❤❤.
Here in Europe is quite nicely received
when a country is able to build and operates its own Space Station, then building a decent and safe car is a piece of cake...
If so, where are the good Russian cars? 😊
@@Chenesseau well, russia build ISS together with some europe countries, japan and U S

Indeed. And what many don't know is, one may complains a product with low quality that is made in China, but the most better quality products one could buy also come from China, it is just depend on the prices. You got what you pay, simple as that.
biggest facepalm comment. They are not the same companies/manufacturers.
small, cheap EVs.
Can’t wait for Kyle to do the up coming Cadillac Optiq.
We already have a video on it!
@@KyleConner I saw the Lyriq but not the Optiq, have you put it out yet? Thanks
Great to watch another eye opening review by Kyle.
Bought mine early this year and absolutely love it. 😍 That being said... the eco tires are probably getting switched for something grippier next summer.
Watch the start of this video! 😉
Love hearing Kyle cackle while doing a burnout in a tiny car!
I normally enjoy your EV reviews, but this one seemed like you were making fun of China. You were looking for problems and looking down on BYD. At least that is what it felt like. Sure there are $150,000 EV'S made in China but BYD is the world's biggest car manufacturer and you show no respect for them at all. Most people would be happy to own this car if they could afford it. You have unlimited income so to you these lower price EV'S are not good. But at least in the end you said it is a good car. Hope you are not offended.
He needs to drive the new Stelato sedan. That car is one of the most impressive vehicles ever from any manufacturer in the world.
Simple affordable EV's. It's what the market needs. BYD needs to get their software sorted.
Keep it up! i love your videos! i suggest you to test the MG4, i have it since march 2023 and i love it!
interior quality not on par with BYD
I get the concern about Chinese EV's flooding America roads, but we are missing out of some great cars that are priced right, styling on point, and are pretty close to being on par with tesla software
The goal is to destroy US industry.
Really fun to see Kyle's takes on these cars. Seemly a more balanced review than others I've seen.
We have quite a few of these driving around in New Zealand now, it's been out for a while now. It's $44k NZD here
Consumers should be able to decide what we purchase ..... Free trade
Right now with the tariffs, sounds like we already lost and can't compete
10:55 That was totally a pun in the Seal but I don't even think Kyle did it on porpoise.
Never understood why tesla couldn't give us that motorized roof screen even as an option
@@dtallornothing they don't do customer satisfaction.
They do a glass roof to allow an overall lower vehicle height while still maintaining decent headroom. Adding a motorized roof defeats that purpose. Why they don't use the electrochromatic roof that Toyota and Lexus offer is a different question. Probably cost, just like why they don't offer a HUD.

Small tipp for tight situations: you can open the 3D camera with a button at the screen.

Funny how times have changed in just 4-5 years. For apprx. 33k I bought a Mercedes a class 4 years ago. And now we are talking about how this 30k car is cheap and just for cities.
Do you still remember (or have you watched) Kyle's review of the Kandi K27 EV in November of 2020 as the cheapest new car in the US? It's the 3rd most viewed video on this channel. He seemed to have enjoyed that car much more than the cars he has been reviewing recently.
For comparison, the entry-level BYD Dolphin starts at 99,800 yuan ($13,865 USD) in China. More than doubling the price - that's how much politics, shipping, and middlemen add to the cost of a car.
In Mexico this model cost now 26k USD.
10 years ago $38k got u a decently equipped C class now Honda Accord and Toyota Camry could cost that much
@@Carfan678 yeah, my dad bough a brand new civic coupe 1.8 in 2008 and cost him 227,000 mexican pesos, I bought a Mazda 3 sedan last year's and cost me 459,000 mxn. Also the fully equipped civic cost here 635,000 mxn in 16 years the civic has raise x3 the price.
Volume rocker is not flimsy, it's also a buttom that can be pressed for mute.
It is kind of weird to use a cylinder side as a button, but not as weird as having a dedicated switch for turning off traction control but not for AC temperature...
28000 EURO?? The price of Dolphin in China starts from about 11000 EURO to about 15000 EURO for top spec. I feel bad for the Europeans.
We have our own products under 25K€ arriving this year.
The deglobalisation + protectionism move going on is real. Every brand pretty much relocating in their country because they get massacred on foreign markets (see VW in China...😬 )
Great review. Are you going to review the MG4? I would love to hear you thoughts around driving dynamic. It's infotainment system isn't fantastic. I have one here in Australia and it is such a great car to drive.
I loved driving the MG4, the Dolphin won us over as a really useful all-rounder.
Did you mean BYD building in Mexico? Mexico is not South America.
Brazil as well I believe
They're both going to be Belt and Road/ BRICS
BYD moved to a plant in Brazil that used to be Ford's in Bahia.
Ford left Brazil altogether.
They are building plant in Mexico AND Brazil. And Hungary, and Thailand . BYD is going all out global. Their final goal is to replace TOYOTA and become the world’s No.1 in Cars.
It's South America to us Americans😂
At least they have a rear window wiper!
Dolphin is a great city car, but personally I would like BYD to get rid of those Linglong tyres first.
65KwH? In THAT thing? Amazing.... I have an e-tron 55. Certain envy occurring here, but, this is the progress of technology here. Amazing how fast things are moving.
BYD Tan AWD 102 KwH
10:25 no. BYD spent on creating an affordable car (Seagull). I couldn't afford a German car with nice throttle response because it is not what matters.
There was a BYD something at the NAIAS in 2011 or 2012 and it looked terrible. Overspray on the glass and weatherstrip, orange peel and dry spots in the clear. It seemed like a joke seeing it there.
Seeing these it’s scary how fast they’ve turned things around.
I loved that you made a point of talking about the Dolphins 4 plug Vehicle to load system. (3:09) I wish more Electric vehicles sold in America had something like this. Vehicle to load capability is a relatively low cost feature, that ICE cars have never offered. But, as you point out, only Hyundai and Fords F-150 offer any vehicle to load capability in the US market.
We have this model in South Africa . It is beautiful in grey colour.
I saw your review on the BYD Seal and both of the occasions you have mentioned the very fine tuning's. I know to a car-person these are important, and given time, I think BYD will sort out all of these issues.
This is important to keep in mind that BYD, although has been producing cars for a while now, the earlier ones were in no way competitive/drivable ones. These new generation of EV's are the real deal and has been on the market (mostly in China) for a couple of years and are just expanding to outside of China. I hope they eventually dial down the very last of the fine tunings (both software and hardware) as these cars goes to even more regions and gets the all important driver feedbacks.
Great review once again and pointing out the stuffs that needs to be fixed/improved. Try to do a full review of the BYD Seagull.
Great video. In South Africa the BYD Dolphin just became available. So far its the "cheapest" EV available in SA. Great little EV.
This is what we need in the states!
The 1st EV that actually burns rubber. Nice.
@11:38 Gjeebs level comedy 😂😂
Pretty sure they can improve all those factors with an OTA update!
Kyle should try the smallest BYD called Seagull. even more fun than the dolphin. should try it.
The Chinese are embracing the future, unlike the luddites in the west. I"ll keep my Bolt euv until something really great comes along.
"body porpoising" in a car called "Dolphin"...was that on purpose? Love it!
Totally on porpoise! 🐬
We need the BYD Seagull in USA bad its super cheap and actually find it attractive more so than the dolphin shown here. Ik its never coming but a man can wish
Go to China and have much more experiences of slights Xpeng, Aito, AVTR, Geely, ZEEKR, EXEED, LUXEED, Jiyue, IM by yourself. Have leisure travel to China to enjoy how beautiful China too

The grill reminds me of the 1g Bolt as well.
Just bought a 2013 Nissan leaf with chademo for $1780 out the door.
The U.S. needs these cars. The American car companies need to get more automated, the UAW pushed wages and benefits too high for the low skill or no skill employee's. Either automate more or move factory to Mexico or maybe do both.
Good review, thanks 😉👍
It has the coolest interior
Kyle was like if u hit someone and u want to see their facial expressions just pull up the bottom camera.😂🤣
It’s also sold in Mexico.
The fact that you compare this cheap car with German luxury cars already says volumes. This car is just 12k usd in China!
10:03 :: BYD have ECO and SPORT modes, most likely that was on ECO mode that’s why it felt laggy
It's also sold en Mexico. Cheap but seems like good quality.
Pain point: No repair shops prepared to work with it, so if you hit or get hit, no one will be able to repair it 🙃 This is in Mexico, Im sure in other countries is different haha
Looks fun and fresh, but a cheap runabout it ain't: most people that want a cheap runabout buy used, or are looking at under 20,000 if they want new, which usually means new EVs are out of reach, but recently there have been a torrent of announcements from the likes of Citroen, Fiat, Dacia etc. that will be priced in the 15,000 to 20,000 range (I'm most excited about the new Fiat Panda).
Technically, the 100% tariff on Chinese made EVs does not come into effect until August 1st of this year. However, the only car that will initially be impacted by this is the new Mini Cooper EV which is made in China. Mini had hoped to release the new version of the electric Mini in the US later this year but now will have to wait until production is switched to Europe (maybe 2025, but more likely 2026).
New Mini use GWM platform(variation used in ORA 03 car)
Hope BYD is coming to Canada
With 101% tariff unfortunately.
@@bobsmith3983 Well now there’s recent report that Tesla’s forcing Canada to lower its China EV tariffs
This model, along with the Atto 3 crossover, will likely be the first BYD EV sold in the US market if BYD decides to finally sell their EV's in the USA. BYD will not try to compete agianst the larger Tesla Model 3 and Model Y just yet, especially since there are way too many competitors also in that category.

i hope no body says " CCP shill"
We have resisted but I sense somebody might have been thinking it.
Bring the Chinese to North America!! We need these companies to give our lazy car companies a kick in the ass. Competition is healthy and China is leading the way.
These Chinese cars will devastate the German car manufacturers. Why buy an ID4 that cost 10k euros more when a BYD available.
Any plans to check the Peugeot e208?
God forbid that that we have affordable EV options in the U.S. market...
Starts at $13,900 USD. Seems pretty important to say that.
In China, which doesn't matter.
would be 27k-28k after tariffs so compare to anything in that range. They are going to try to make them in Mexico to get around that I believe.

I hope they come build cars in the US, Trump seems to be okay with the idea. But tbh i don't know which would be more expensive, build in the US or build in China then pay 100% tariffs
When are you going to drive the MG4?
Does it have the ability to aim the vents _independent_ of throttling the flow? The Bolt does not, if you aim a vent at your face it cuts off the airflow.
Yes, within limits. Point a vent straight up and it'll bounce off its surround a bit and go forwards. Half closing a vent is tricky as there's not much feedback, only a firm click at full open and full close.
