Moon's drumming made the drums a real instrument that expanded the band's ability to fill up a concert hall with a huge sound. Not just keeping rhythm but helping to define it.
There is no one who played drums like Keith. His approach and style was completely unorthodox. Super unique. There is a reason no one can replicate Keith's playing. I mean I have yet to really hear ONE cover that can replicate Keith's style and rhythm. Even Starky(Ringo's son) who was taught by Keith struggled to replicate Keith's presence and sound.
I read a comment somewhere that i noticed applies to all their earlier shows: Pete looks like he came from a paint job, Roger from a hippie festival, John from the halloween store and Keith like he had just escaped the insane asylum 😂
@@John-gi8eq ????? It's just a comment about a thing i noticed in multiple performances that i obviously watch for the music? You start these videos up and close your eyes or what?

I wish they had shown more of John Entwistle in this video. He actually played his bass like a lead guitar on this song. I'd like to have seen him featured more.

Keith moon did such a good job he gave the song a triple bossy deluxe, on a raft, four by four animal style, extra shingles with a shimmy and a squeeze, light axle grease, made it cry, burned it, and let it swim.
The first ever staging of Tommy was by the Seattle Opera in Seattle, 1971, starring Bette Midler as the acid queen and Tommy's mother. My brother's band, Canonball, was the pit band. He played lead guitar. Pete Townshend came over to see it and pronounced approval of the band and performances.

Just by listening to the gorgeous intro, you can tell that Pete Townshend is a genius. Behind the totally crazy guitarist/composer there is am musician with an impeccable sense of beauty. As for Roger Daltrey's voice: I think his looks overshadowed his performances. IMHO he was a more handsome version of Robert Plant. Just my personal opinion: I never thought he was an awesome singer, definitely no Freddie Mercury, but I like his voice a lot. Powerful, with the right amount of "romanticism" definitely motivated by Pete's awesome compositions. At Berklee, we learned that John Entwistle was the "drummer" while Keith Moon rarely kept a steady groove and basically always played a drum solo (or call it one huge drum fill).
Just love the art in this song - thank you for spending 2 years in your room playing guitar and being available to the muses Pete. There's a lot of honesty all the way though, no pretension in this band, not one bit. From here anyway ~ I know it ~! Love it. Best unwinding and freeing music for me!
This song never gets old, what a timeless classic by one of the classic bands of the 70s. I had the rare priveledge of seeing the boys play Hot August Nights in Lewiston Idaho in 2012, when they started playing pinball wizard the whole park just erupted. It was classic man could not have seen a better concert. Thank you boys for this timeless gem and for all the memories God bless you all🌹♥️♥️
Funny story about this, my mom loved the Who probably more than me and was having a party back in the late 60s. Well she wanted it to end so she put on the rock opera Tommy, can’t dance to that so everyone left. My mom was a legend.
What makes this song so delightful is its poetic quality. It is onomatopoetic, or sounds like what it is about. Think of “Flight of the Bumblebee.” Pete’s rapid guitar riffs, especially the solo, beautifully imitate the action sounds of a pinball machine as the ball bounces between rails, bumpers and off of obstacles. Even the single booming note recalls flippers hitting a ball back up into play, and the dropping beat of “sure plays a mean pin ball” mimics the ball dropping down out of play. The music is genius. Not many rock songs achieve such poetic quality.
Funny as this joke might be, Moon actually hated drum solos & never wanted to play them. Wiki mentions an example where the other guys decided to make him play a recorded solo in a show by pausing at that point, and Moon just shouted "drum solos are boring!" and played nothing...
